West *********** footy is gearing up for its night of nights as the state’s best WAFL players vie for the prestigious Sandover Medal.

One of WA’s top events on the sporting and social calendar, the annual ceremony looks set to be a hotly contested award in 2024 after a number of stand-out seasons from stars around the league.

East Fremantle ball magnet Milan Murdock enters the night as a favourite for his first Sandover gong, with last year’s winner Hamish Brayshaw having missed large chunks of the season due to injury.

However, Murdock faces a fierce field with Claremont ruckman Oliver Eastland, having starred for the Tigers, who turned around their dire start to reach the semifinals.

Eastland was the competition’s dominant big man and got the job done all over the ground, but he is likely to lose a few votes to star teammates and former medal winners Jye Bolton and Bailey Rogers.

Fremantle Dockers-listed Peel Thunder player Will Brodie could also pole plenty of votes with his side finishing second on the table.

He will also likely see a few votes stolen in the first half of the voting by fellow Docker Neil Erasmus, who starred for the Thunder.

A former Docker is also likely to give the competition a scare with Mitch Crowden a integral part of East Perth’s minor premiership and getting the Royals to the decider in a fortnight’s time.

The votes are awarded by the field umpires in a 3,2,1 system at the end of each game with the player judged best-on-ground handed the maximum votes.

The player with the most votes at the end of 21 rounds is crowned as the Sandover medalist.
