Panthers beat Boulder to set-up GFLW grand final showdown

Railways’ hopes of a flag in their third season are alive and well after they held off Boulder by 18 points, 4.8 (32) to 2.2 (14), on Saturday in the Goldfields Football League’s women’s preliminary final.

The Panthers locked in a third consecutive grand final berth since joining the GFLW in 2022 with a hard-running final term that yielded 3.2.

They were made to work hard when Boulder kept them scoreless to quarter-time while building a seven-point lead.

But the red-and-******* gradually clawed back and conceded 1.1 the rest of the way to set-up a clash this Saturday against Mines Rovers in the grand final.

Both teams are chasing a maiden GFLW flag.

“It’ a nice reward for effort to get there (to the grand final),” Railways coach Cory Jones said.

“The ******’ fitness is good — we obviously had to work hard to get the win after Boulder came out *******.

“They really challenged us as both teams clearly understood that there was no tomorrow if you lose.

“The ****** had to dig deep and lift to get the job done and they did that.”

Railways have enjoyed another solid GFLW campaign under Jones, finishing second with 12 wins behind Mines Rovers.

Among the Panthers’ best in the preliminary final was Jacinta Yarran, who was the game’s leading forward with two goals.

Teammates Tully Jackson and Drew Epis kicked a goal apiece for the winners, as did Tequilia LeBois and Tiana Jones for Boulder.

Boulder showed major improvement this year with nine wins, but lowered their colours in each of five clashes against Railways.

The Tigers bowed out in third place, ahead of Kalgoorlie and Kambalda.
