Marvel Rivals Has Promised New Game Modes as Dev Plans to Dethrone Overwatch

NetEase’s Marvel Rivals is quickly becoming more and more popular since its beta. The game is set to release on 6th December 2024 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. As a competitive multiplayer hero shooter, it will compete with the likes of Overwatch 2.

And the developers know this. But what will NetEase do to beat the reigning king? It won’t be an easy task but one main focus that the devs need to have is adding more game modes for players to enjoy. What usually happens to competitive online games is that they get too competitive and become un-fun for casual play.

Marvel Rivals Has The Potential To Be Huge, But Will It?

What sets Marvel Rivals apart is its team-up mechanic. While Overwatch focuses on individual hero abilities and team coordination, NetEase takes this further by allowing characters to combine their powers

To achieve its goal of being the best hero shooter, it will need to maintain long-term player interest, which is no small feat. Overwatch 2 has struggled with this, as evidenced by complaints about the game’s repetitive modes and lack of fresh content.

NetEase has also acknowledged the importance of game modes in this interview with

. This is especially true since Overwatch 2 has struggled with balancing competitive and casual play. NetEase plans to introduce a variety of modes to keep gameplay fresh and exciting.

From team-based player-versus-player (PvP) modes to larger-scale battles, fans have speculated about what’s in store. PvE modes, in particular, could give the game an edge over the competition. This is especially true since Blizzard never released the PvE campaign for its game, to the disappointment of fans.

Another game mode that could potentially be interesting is a Marvel Zombies-inspired survival mode. Much like what we see in the ****** Ops games of the Call of Duty franchise, we could get a Zombies mode where heroes must fend off waves of enemies together.

One theory that could be a lot of fun is a large-scale team battle on a giant map that could be named Battleworld. This could be similar to what a game like BattleBit Remastered did last year but with Marvel heroes instead of soldiers with guns. It’s the perfect middle ground between a regular hero shooter and a battle royale.

You Need More Than Just Game Modes To Reach The Top Though

Some fans have voiced concerns about Marvel Rivals focusing too much on casual play. These players argue that the devs should prioritize the game’s core PvP gameplay rather than dividing focus. NetEase has already set an example in some aspects of a game, and there’s room for more here.

Competitive modes aren’t the only way the game plans to stand out. NetEase is also committed to fostering a strong community. According to the devs, the community and its feedback will be a big part of the game’s future.

While the hill to the top of the hero shooter genre is steep, the game has shown promising signs. Many players are hopeful that NetEase will cater to both casual gamers and more competitive ones.

Do you think NetEase can succeed in this trial? Will you play the Marvel-themed hero shooter when it comes out? Let us know in the comments!
