AFLW 2024: Fremantle Dockers held goalless in golden day for Adelaide Crows

Fremantle have endured an agonising ****** by a thousand cuts, slumping to their first defeat of the season after being held goalless by a powerful Adelaide.

The Dockers were simply overwhelmed by the gold press in the 33-point defeat at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

To make matters worse, second-gamer Tanisha Kikoak went down cradling a heavily strapped shoulder in the third term and did not return to the fray.

Ebony Marinof proved a handful, registering an incredible 13 first-half tackles and finishing with 18, to go with 30 disposals, as she did her best to pinch back the tackle record from Docker Kira Bower.

She also kicked an important goal in the opening term.

Anne Hatchard (29 disposals and two goals) and Madison Newman (27 disposals) also ran rampant, buzzing around the contest and feasting on ground ******.

For Fremantle, it was left to the defenders to do most of the work, but despite Ashleigh Brazill, Gabby O’Sullivan and Madeleine Scanlon having plenty of the Sherrin, they couldn’t find a way past Adelaide’s golden curtain.

The Dockers’ short-kick game looked the ticket in the first minutes, but a series of clangers from directionless forward entries and Adelaide gaining ground with long ****** down the line saw the plan cast aside.

For the second week in a row, Fremantle ******* to register a major in the opening 20 minutes, a clever kick from Adelaide’s Marinoff on the flank the only one to find the big sticks.

Chelsea Randall added a goal to her hot start after an off-the-ball free kick, handing the Crows the perfect start to the second term.

Fremantle’s backline was put under siege by a swarm of red and gold, forced to defend 20 inside 50s in two quarters.

But they held firm, interfering and hassling every kick to keep the Crows to just two majors at the main break.

Scanlon worked her heart out, but poor decision-making and kicking left her with little reward, while Newman racked up touches for the visitors.

Mim Strom was brought back to earth after a big first round early by Adelaide’s Jessica Allan, but as the game wore on, the ruck made her presence known.

But it couldn’t help her side as they continued to turn the ball over, often trying to beat the Crows outnumber.

Danielle Ponter extended Adelaide’s lead to 22 points midway through the third.

Fremantle continued to find keeping the ball a task, their turnover count breaching the 60 mark.

The game was done as a contest very early into the last as the Crows continued to own territory, the visitors boosting their percentage with another two majors.

Fremantle ******* to ***** a significant shot and were left without a major for their efforts, the third time it has happened in club history.
