I’ve just received a Pixel 9 Pro to review, and — because I can — I decide to ask new Gemini Live assistant, what the new phone can do and why I should buy one.

“Hey Goggle, tell me why I should buy the new Pixel 9 Pro?” I ask the Gemini assistant.

“The Pixel 9 Pro offers a compelling combination of features and performance to make it a strong contender in the premium smartphone market.” The assistant replies in an instant.

It goes on to highlight the phone’s versatile camera system and computational photography techniques as well as the Pixel 9 Pro’s many other technical features, before asking if I would like to compare it to other smartphones.

“Yes please,” I think and ask. “How does it compare to an iPhone 15 Pro?”

Again, the Gemini assistant answers instantly. It points out that both are premium smartphones with exceptional features, but the choice often comes down to personal preference.

It says, quite fairly, that both phones have excellent cameras and offer unique features. But ultimately, the choice between the Pixel 9 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro, depends on your individual needs and preferences.

I go on to have quite an interesting two-way conversation with the assistant. It has suggestions and answers for all kinds of things ranging from what recipes I can create from the ingredients in my fridge to suggestions about how to plan a road trip the US Southwest in November and what to see while I’m there.

“We could become quite good friends,” I think before getting stuck into a more hands-on experience with the new Pixel 9 Pro.

The Pixel 9 Pro comes in two different sizes. The Pixel Pro has a 6.3-inch display, and the Pixel Pro XL has a 6.8-inch display. Both share the same specs and features including a sharp and vibrant display and a new 42MP front facing selfie camera that can take even better and sharper photos in low light.

On the back, the Pixel’s iconic camera bar has a more beefed-up look that hints that the rear facing cameras have been improved too.

Its triple rear camera system has a 50MP wide, a 48MP ultrawide with macro focus, a 48MP 5x optical telephoto zoom and software supported digital zoom up to 30x.

There’s an extensive range of camera features including Pro Controls, Night Sight, Long Exposure, Action Pan, Portrait Mode and Panorama.

The Magic Editor has new and improved capabilities so you can get the shot you want. Auto Frame lets you reframe a photo for better composition and Reimagine allows you to get creative. Simply type in what you want to see — like a different sky or wildflowers in an open field — to bring your ideas to life.

The phone can capture 4K video at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second and

says that later this year users will be able to enhance videos to up to 8K video at 30 frames per second with its Video Boost app.

I like the look and feel. It’s a premium quality phone. I have a Pixel 8 Pro and it is a significant step up from that.

I love the cameras in the phone. There’s nothing you can’t do with them. The images are crisp and sharp even in difficult lighting conditions, and the editing features are simply amazing. I give the cameras a good workout during West Travel Club’s Nice Day Out tours testing the camera’s macro capabilities on tiny wildflowers as well as the Long Exposure feature at Noble Falls in Gidgegannup.

The Night Sight feature is also outstanding. It captures amazing pictures in near total darkness with detail in both highlight and deep shadow.

The clever AI and AR features are frighteningly good in a variety of scenarios. I particularly like the clever photo editing features but also that I can have a two-way conversation with the Gemini assistant and that the phone can create a summary and transcript of my interview recordings — but how many of the extensive features will be used regularly is up to the individual.
