After a very long time in the oven, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is almost here, and from the looks of it, it’s more than clear that players across Xbox and PC are in for a banger time.

Overcoming the challenging development ******* due to the war, there is nothing but respect towards GSC Game World for what they’ve accomplished here. But just wait till you see what how hard these developers went in creating the game’s open world – it may just be unlike anything else you’ve seen all year long.

In spite of all the hurdles in its development cycle, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is finally ready to take us all back into the Chornobyl Wasteland in all its glory, but done even better than before.

Powered by UE5, the developers have now revealed that the game’s map will be 64 square kilometers wide and divided into 20 regions, each handcrafted with a laser-sharp focus on maximizing the level of detail and immersion. As technical producer Evegeniy Kulik elaborates in an

We have 20 different regions, and in these regions, you may find big locations with big hubs where some different people and different factions are living, but still, you may notice smaller locations and mini locations. The main feature here is that we almost didn’t use any procedural generations to create this world, and this huge map is made all by hand of our guys from [the] level design department, so each location you will experience in the game is quite unique.

Unlike the older trilogy, which relied on loading screens to piece its for-its-time vast map together, Heart of Chornobyl will not feature any such interruptions that may stop you from soaking in this game’s oppressive atmosphere.

Along with all this, Kulik claims that learning how to navigate the world, with all its anomalies and hostile factions, will feel different from before. This will allow even veteran fans to find themselves completely lost once more, rediscovering the game’s magic in the process.

At the end of the day, all these signs point to the fact that if GSC gets it right, we might have a real gem in the making.

GSC Game World has poured its blood, sweat, heart, and soul into making this game a worthy successor to the original trilogy. This has left little doubt in anyone’s mind that this game will be released as a mess.

Not only that, but one cannot help but hope that people reciprocate the kind of passion and appreciate the game for all that it is—a product of passion, a developer’s journey of iterating on the same idea for nearly two decades while overcoming insurmountable odds, and just a genuinely good game that is worthy of your time.

Suppose these developers manage to cross the finish line without any hiccups in this final stage of development. In that case, all of us could potentially be looking at one of 2024’s strongest Game of the Year contenders.
