This May Be the 1 Reason You’re ‘Immortal’ in Elden Ring

Elden Ring is the ultimate Soulslike game developed by FromSoftware, but unlike its previous games, this entry possesses a richer and deeper lore.

The brutal difficulty of the game is guaranteed to give players a hard time, and the number of times the ‘You *****‘ appears on screen can be annoying, yet the game will always bring the tarnished back to life.

The Immortality Of The Tarnished In Elden Ring

Elden Ring was released two years ago and has won countless awards from various shows.

There is a technical explanation for a player’s ‘immortality‘ in a video game: there is no life to begin with. Players can respawn at certain points in a game, but a Soulslike game is in a league of its own, and they spawn players by a bonfire. FromSoftware CEO and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki stated that the Tarnished stems from the power of the Guidance of Grace.

The explanation can be somewhat convoluted for those who are unaware of the lore, but it has a much deeper meaning than one might expect. Miyazaki reached out to George R. R. Martin, the legendary author of the Song of Ice and *****, to create the world of Elden Ring, and his work was more than enough to build a full-sized game and an expansion that is equally as big in the form of Shadow of the Erdtree.

The combined efforts of Miyazaki and Martin were able to come up with a story behind the immortality of the Tarnished, and it all comes down to the purpose of the player. ****** is not an option until the player has achieved the title of Elden Lord. It can be an awful ordeal if one looks at it from the point of view of the game’s universe, but it is also a clever explanation for the players.

Immortality can be viewed as a gift, but there are also some major drawbacks, especially in the life of the Tarnished. Players will come back to life again and again until they have fulfilled the purpose that was bestowed upon them by Grace.

Immortality of the Tarnished: A Gift or a Curse in Elden Ring

The world of Elden Ring has barely scratched the surface, and Miyazaki has plans to expand it even more.

The immortality of the tarnished can be an awful hand to be dealt with; despite all the hard battles fought and enemies defeated, it is all meaningless until they can be what they were meant to be. Miyazaki was also a bit remorseful for the difficult nature of the games he made, but justified it because it helps build character and the reward of accomplishment is more than enough.

If the Tarnished wishes to break free from this cycle of immortality, the players might have to do the impossible. The canon ending seems to favor players as they ascend through the ranks and eventually become the Elden Lord.

Perhaps the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion will offer some new and deeper insight regarding the curse and properly utilize the material that Martin has worked on.
