In every mainline Fallout game, aside from New Vegas, players begin their post-apocalyptic journey as a Vault Dweller, someone who managed to survive the nuclear devastation of the world by being born into the confines of an underground bunker. The Sole Survivor is different though in that, as the name implies, they're the only person who makes it out of the Vault alive.
