Bill Shorten resigns to end 17-year career in politics

Former Labor leader Bill Shorten has announced he will step down at the next election after 17 years in federal parliament.

* 1998 – Elected Victorian state secretary of the *********** Workers’ Union, turning down pre-selection to a safe seat in state parliament

* 2001 – Named as AWU’s national secretary

* 2006 – Pre-selected to run for the Victorian federal seat of Maribyrnong. Comes into the national spotlight as union leader during the Beaconsfield mine collapse, playing a key role as a negotiator and spokesman during the rescue mission

* 2007 – Elected MP for Maribyrnong as part of Kevin Rudd’s landslide election win for Labor

* 2010 – Named finance minister in Julia Gillard’s government following the leadership change. He would later serve as workplace minister

* 2013 – Elected Labor leader after the party’s loss at the federal election

* 2016 – Leads Labor to win back 14 seats at the 2016 election but not enough to form government despite significant swings against Malcolm Turnbull and the coalition. Stays on as opposition leader for a second term
