GSSA 2024: Phoenix men beat ladder-leaders Caledonians while women come from behind to claim victory

Phoenix notched perhaps their best win of the season in the penultimate round of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division one with a stellar victory over ladder-leaders Caledonians on Saturday night.

Caledonains were in command early when Joseph Love scored in the 30th minute before Phoenix flexed their muscles with three goals in the space of half an hour.

Reagan Korthuis, Damian Dekker and Leroy Van Den Dool all netted a goal for a 3-1 lead with 15 minutes to play.

However, when Edward Tikoft scored in the 79th minute, Caledonians looked to have wrested back momentum but were beaten by the final whistle as Phoenix held on for a superb 3-2 victory.

In the other games of the league competition, Polonia notched a 3-1 victory over a spirited Stirling Rangers side and Rovers eased past Bayswater 3-1.

In the women’s division one competition, Phoenix leapfrogged Mt Baker into the top three with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory on Friday night.

Phoenix were trailing 2-1 at the half before second-half braces from Ebonee Van Burgel and Tasmyn Amoraal helped them to a sensational comeback win.

Libby Morris and Ellie Puls were the only goal-scorers for Mt Barker.

In the other matches, Caledonians beat Rovers in a defensive slog 1-0 victory, while ladder-leaders Denmark won against Polonia on forfeit.
