(WLNS) — Vice President Kamala Harris was in Detroit today, only four days after her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, spoke in Grand Rapids. Michigan has been a popular stop for the presidential candidates, and there are still over two months until the election. Harris’ appearance in Detroit had one resounding Labor Day message. “Unions helped build America and unions helped build America’s middle class,” Harris said. Her message continued to ******* how Donald Trump treated labor groups while he was president. “Donald Trump blocked overtime benefits for millions of workers and opposed efforts to raise the minimum wage. He appointed union busters to the National Labor Relations Board,” she said. However, Michigan Republicans claim Harris would be worse for the working class. Congresswoman Lisa McClain says Harris’ focus on electric vehicle production is to blame for lost jobs. “2000 layoffs in Warren. 199 layoffs in the Sterling Heights plant. GM ***** off 1300 people, i mean Ford is scrapping the electric SUV,” McClain said. Harris’ visit is her second in a month. Donald Trump and JD Vance visited the state 6 times in August. The candidates are coming to Michigan a lot — and early this cycle. the timing has a lot to do with expanded absentee voting in Michigan, which starts Sept. 26th. Kyle Melinn, the editor of MIRS, says the absentee turnout is unprecedented. “In the primary election, we had more than 60% of all voters voted before election day,” Melinn said. According to Ad Impact, Democrats have spent 77 million dollars on commercials in Michigan, while Republicans have spent 23 million. “Donald Trump realizes this, he has to make up for that through earned media. He has to get in front of TV cameras. He has to have these rallies or these press conferences in Howell or Byron Center or Potterville,” Melinn said. With 64 days until the general election and President Joe Biden visiting on Friday—experts say campaign stops are far from over in Michigan. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
