It was a big statement by the Roos, who set the tone early but were their own worst ****** as an ill-timed case of the goal-kicking yips threatened to derail their good work. Jordan Angus turned in a dominant ruck display as the ******-and-******* surged inside the 50m arc time and again, but they misfired for 2.10 to half-time that gave Boulder a one-point lead. Credit: Carwyn Monck/Kalgoorlie Miner The efficiency and poise needed by Kalgoorlie to go on with the job was ultimately provided by teenager Isaac Billing, who set them alight early in the third term with two goals just moments apart. Tyrell Metcalf followed with a clever snap through heavy traffic that extended the Roos’ lead to 19 points and Billing worked back hard into defence to haul in two timely marks as Boulder pressed. Jake Nuich pulled back a goal for Boulder midway through the term, but it was the beginning of the end for the reigning premiers who were held to 1.3 in the second half by stout opposition defence led by Max Taylor and Dan Ashwin. After heading for home with a lead of 18 points, Kalgoorlie turned up the heat with 6.3. Metcalf was the Roos’ leading forward with three goals, complemented by two each by Billing and Jack Martin. “I was pretty nervous before the game which is unlike me — because I can’t do anything about it and it’s all up to the boys,” Kalgoorlie coach Rick Butterfield said. “But we turned it around (after the inaccurate start) and got through unscathed, which has been quite rare for us. “I reckon if we can play like that (this Saturday), we’re heading in the right direction.” Boulder was battling an injury toll and limped into the finals after losing three of their previous four games. Kalgoorlie now meet Mines Rovers this Saturday in the preliminary final after the clubs split the results of their past four encounters this year. The biggest margin between them was in round 18 when the Diorites prevailed by 16 points after Kalgoorlie won the previous two match-ups by one point (round 13) and three points (round eight). In round three, Mines Rovers were winners by 10 points.
