Bunbury whizz **** takes on speed-cubing competition

A Bunbury whizz-**** who can solve a cube puzzle in under four seconds is gearing up for the second speed-cubing competition to hit the South West.

Speed-Cubing is the competitive sport of rapidly solving combination puzzles, the most famous of which being the Rubik’s Cube.

Declan Sander, 13, has been speed-cubing for two and a half years.

“It started when I got kicked off the computer for a month and I was looking for another hobby to do at the same time,” he said.

“I ended up taking a week or two to learn it, and realised I was pretty good at it.”

For the second year in a row, Declan’s school — Bunbury Cathedral Grammar — will host the Bunbury South West Speed-Solving competition in September.

It will serve as a key regional competition before the Rubik’s WCA Oceanic Championship in Perth in December.

Declan was one of the people responsible for bringing the competition to the South West.

“I found out about the World Cube Association, and I noticed this competition that had been in Perth, then last year I decided that we should have one at the school at BCGS, and went from there.”

The competition involves competitors attempting to solve different puzzles in the fastest time, including the standard four-by-four puzzle.

Competitors get 15 seconds to look at the cube before a timer starts and they attempt to make all sides match their ********* tiles.

Other puzzles include cubes of thee-by-three dimensions, triangular puzzles — and in some cases trying to solve the puzzle ******-folded.

“On average I can solve a two-by-two in about four seconds” Declan said.

Declan can also do the impressive feat of solving a cube blindfolded in an average time of two to three minutes.

Declan said the key was learning to quickly memorise which ********* tiles were where.

He does this by assigning letters to the tiles in a method similar to the mind palace mnemonic technique, known in psychological circles to be one of the most efficient methods of memorisation.

“So you’d see one piece, and find that … side of the piece needs to go to that spot,” Declan said.

“I assign a letter to each individual piece of the cube … so I turn those letters into words, which I can turn into a story, which makes it a lot easier to memorise.”

Bunbury South West Speed-Solving competition delegate and co-organiser Tyler Williams said the excitement behind the event had been fantastic.

“We were thrilled with the enthusiasm and talent displayed at last year’s event,” he said.

“This year we’re expecting an even larger turnout as Bunbury continues to establish itself as a key player in the WA speed-cubing community.”

Registrations for the event will close on September 7.

Given the popularity of last year’s event, spots are expected to fill quickly.
