“I don’t think the game would have done what it did” If We Took It Away

Since its release, the unending debate surrounding Elden Ring has only furthered its reach to different corners of the internet, now further exacerbated thanks to Shadow of the Erdtree pushing the players’ technical and mechanical knowledge to its limits.

However, one thing people continue to wonder is whether FromSoftware’s game design philosophy has changed since the release of its first Soulsborne title, ******’s Souls. Well, Hidetaka Miyazaki has an answer that may please long-time fans of these games and further fuel all the discussions surrounding them.

After Shadow of the Erdtree, Is Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Game Design Philosophy Still Unchanged?

As players continue to pick apart every new addition brought by Elden Ring’s supposed one and only expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, many wonder whether FromSoftware has finally lost the plot, now making titles that are either difficult for difficulty’s sake or making them easier to grab a more significant portion of gaming’s proverbial pie.

For those fretting over the same, though, here’s

how cranking down the difficulty of his current magnum opus to have it played by the entire world just wasn’t the right approach:

Had we taken that approach, I don’t think the game would have done what it did, because the sense of achievement that players gain from overcoming these hurdles is such a fundamental part of the experience. Turning down difficulty would strip the game of that joy – which, in my eyes, would break the game itself.

So, yes, FromSoftware still understands what it is doing. It’s also important to remember the distinction between making a game easier and giving players enough creative freedom to take on a challenge whichever way they please, something Elden Ring gives in plenty.

At the same time, however, it’s rather difficult to imagine what awaits this team in the future, considering just how much this game, with Shadow of the Erdtree, now feels like the iterative peak of their base ideologies and game design.

Now That They Are Finally Done With Elden Ring, What Awaits FromSoftware in the Future?

It should be clear to anyone that Shadow of the Erdtree will go down as one of the most significant releases of 2024. If an expansion could win a Game of the Year award, it would certainly contend for it.

But there’s something people are now beginning to wonder—what’s next for FromSoftware? Since ******’s Souls, every major release, with the exception of Déraciné and Armored Core VI, has focused on evolving the Soulsborne game design in some capacity.

After their most recent outing, however, there’s only a little wiggle room left for direct evolution, especially with boss design and combat. There is potential in them going for another horizontal gene transfer similar to Sekiro, but it’s difficult for the imagination to give it shape and form.

Considering that, there’s no doubt that some incredible brainwork will take place at FromSoftware from here on out. With Miyazaki still at the helm and wanting to develop games for the rest of his life, though, the sky may still be the limit for his team.

With that said, what are your thoughts on the game’s difficulty? Did they push it too far with Shadow of the Erdtree? Let us know in the comments below.
