On August 30, the 22-year-old brewer was transferred from Coca-Cola to a consortium of investors led by locally owned Nail Brewing Co. while award-winning South West brewer Beerfarm took ownership of the company’s Bassendean brewing facilities. The deal, announced in May, means that all three craft ***** brands will co-exist at the same production facility, resulting in more volume to reduce costs and create growth. No jobs have been lost under the three-pronged arrangement. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Australia bought Feral in 2018. The beverage giant put the business up for ***** in 2021, when it announced it was withdrawing from the *********** ***** market despite the WA brewer achieving double-digit growth in the years since it was acquired. Nail head brewer and founder John Stallwood heralded the fact the brand behind popular WA beers such as Hop Hog and Biggie Juice is back in WA hands. He added that the two brands would continue to compete to get their ***** on tap at WA pubs. “We have been competitive alongside each other for a long time,” Mr Stallwood said. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==Camera IconFeral co-founder Brendan Varis and Nail Brewing legend John Stallwood back in the day. Mr Stallwood also said Varis is currently training for a ****** at Rajadamnern Muay Thai Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand later this year. The brewer said that Feral will be run “different with small business minds” and that he looked forward to working at the Bassendean facility with Beerfarm owner and director Ian Atkins and “his friendly and smart, ******* team”. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==Camera IconIan Atkins and John Stallwood at BrewCorp in Bassendean. Credit: Jackson Flindell/The West *********** Beerfarm, which has made ***** at its Metricup dairy farm turned brewery since 2015, plans to use the Bassendean site to triple production of their popular beers, including Royal Haze, Milk Stout and India Pale Lager (or IPL). Beerfarm had already contract brewed at Bassendean to meet demand and now has a five-year plan to make 10 million litres of ***** each year at the facility. It’s rare that a small business takes over from an international giant. In May, Mr Atkins said the three-way deal was a “watershed moment” designed to “secure Beerfarm and resurrect Feral”. Mr Stallwood launched Nail, respected for popular core range beers such as Very Pale Ale, Red Ale and mid-strength MVP, out of city pub Bobby Dazzlers Ale House in 2000 before shifting to the BrewCorp facility in Bassendean with Feral. He plans to “rebuild Feral to how great it was”.
