This infamously tangled Pierce County freeway interchange will be rebuilt in 2025

The Puyallup intersection where state Route 167 unceremoniously dumps southbound drivers onto North Meridian Avenue will be rebuilt beginning in 2025, the state Department of Transportation said Thursday. And drivers traveling in either direction on SR 167 will get one new travel lane between Meridian and the state Route 410 interchange.

It’s all part of the next phase of the

That multi-phase project is currently building a toll road between Interstate 5 and state Route 509 through the Port of Tacoma.

On Thursday, the state Department of Transportation announced that

was awarded the $177 million construction contract that will widen a 1.8-mile section of SR 167. It’s the third of four contracts for the project and all of them have been awarded to Atkinson.

Phase three

In the third phase breaking ground in 2025, Atkinson crews will widen approximately 1.8 miles of SR 167 from state Route 161/North Meridian Avenue in Puyallup to state Route 410 near Sumner. Lanes will be added in what is now the median.

What is now one travel lane and one on-ramp/off-ramp lane in each direction will become two travel lanes and a third lane for entering and exiting SR 167. Construction should finish in 2027, according to WSDOT.

This rendering shows a east-facing view of the conceptual design for the new diverging diamond interchange between SR 167 and SR 161/North Meridian Avenue. The interchange will be completed in 2027 but the extension of SR 167 (bottom of rendering) won’t be finished until 2029.

The project includes:

A diverging diamond interchange at SR 161/North Meridian Avenue that will replace the current intersection.

A bridge built over SR 161/North Meridian Avenue that will eventually connect with a later phase of the project.

A new bridge for SR 167 over Milwaukee Avenue East.

Fourth and final stage

The fourth stage will build the remaining 2.6 miles of the expressway from I-5 in Fife to SR 161/North Meridian Avenue. Drivers will see the beginning of that during the upcoming phase three construction. Approximately 1/2-mile of embankments for the expressway will be built between North Meridian Avenue and the

WSDOT said it plans to award that last construction contract for the SR 167 Completion Project in summer 2025. That stage should be completed in 2029.

Current construction

Travelers on Interstate 5 have been watching the building of the current phase under construction near the Fife curve and Hylebos Creek. That toll road will connect I-5 with SR 509 in 2026.

The first stage of construction built the Wapato Way East bridge over I-5 at the Fife curve in 2021. Current work involves the rebuilding of bridges that carry I-5 traffic over Hylebos Creek and the building of the toll road itself.

The 167 Completion project is part of WSDOT’s $2.38 billion
