Australia wins gold in women’s doubles table tennis

HOW AUSTRALIA FARED ON DAY THREE OF THE 2024 PARIS PARALYMPICS:

*********** MEDALLISTS

GOLD

Lina Lei and Qian Yang (table tennis, women’s doubles class 20 final) – The naturalised *********** duo sealed the final in four games, 11-7, 11-6, 2-11, 12-10. The gold was Qian’s seventh Paralympic medal while Lina claimed a remarkable 10th medal.

Amanda Reid (cycling, women’s C1-3 500m time trial) – Reid went back to back, defending her gold medal after being pushed close by China’s Wangwei Qian. But Reid finished with a factored time of 36.676secs to extend her reign as Paralympic champion.

SILVER

Michael Roeger (athletics, men’s 1,500m T46) – Roeger led from the off and looked set to win gold until the field came round the final bend and onto the home straight. Aleksandr Iaremchuk had some gas left in the tank and burned past the *********** to take first place.

BRONZE

Madison de Rozario (athletics, women’s 5,000m T54) – A seventh Paralympic medal for de Rozario, who will now turn her attention to her other disciplines in the 1500m and marathon over the next seven days.

Jack Ireland (swimming, men’s 200m freestyle S14) – Ireland won his first Paralympic medal and set an Oceania record of 1:53.77. The 25-year-old was just pipped to a silver medal by Canada’s Nicholas Bennett who finished in 1:53.61.

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED

* Athletics – Rhiannon Clarke set a new *********** record in the women’s 100m T38 but was unable to make it to the podium. Clarke finished fourth after running 12.72.

* Archery – Ameera Lee and Melissa-Anne Tanner crashed out of the last 16 of the women’s individual compound. Clinical French archer Julie Rigault-Chupin saw off Lee 140-132, while Britain’s Phoebe Paterson Pine edged out 140-136.

* Rowing – Erik Horrie qualified for the PR1 men’s singles sculls final, while Australia’s PR3 mixed coxed four came through the repechage to reach the medal race.

* Boccia – Daniel Michel’s hopes of sealing a gold medal are increasing by the day after the 29-year-old wrapped up a third straight win in the preliminary round of matches.

* Wheelchair rugby – The Steelers beat 53-49 Denmark earlier on Saturday but they were relying on Great Britain to do them a favour. Britain needed to defeat France to ensure Australia’s passage to the knockout phase and they duly delivered in a 50-49 win over the hosts.

WHO SAID WHAT?

“Even packing a tracksuit (for the medal ceremony) seemed a bit presumptuous”. – Madison de Rozario didn’t rate her chances in the 5000m but the experienced Paralympian was left celebrating her third-place finish.

“Electricity shortages, rockets, drones – every minute you could ****. It was rough, but … we are Ukrainians, we are strong in spirit”. – Ukrainian swimmer Iaroslav Denysenko on his challenging journey to win bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke S12 final.
