Mum suffers heart ******* on son’s wedding day in the Philippines

An *********** couple are urgently trying to save money for their mother’s surgery after she suffered a heart ******* on her son’s wedding day.

Gian Biduare and his bride Danline Faye Canuta had travelled from Australia to celebrate their wedding with family in the Philippines in 2022 but their happiness was soon overshadowed when Gian’s mother, Joy, became ill towards the end of the reception.

“She was just clenching her fists, she was continuously coughing,” Danline said.

Despite her protests that “I’m OK, you guys just go on … it’s your wedding day”, Gian and Danline finally convinced Joy to go to the hospital where doctors said she was having a heart *******.

Joy was told three of her heart valves were damaged and not working properly and she needed angioplasty to open her blocked arteries — at a cost of $A25,000.

While the ********* national has health insurance, it would only cover 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the cost so, coupled with her ***** of surgery, Joy opted — despite doctors’ insistence that it was urgent — to put off the surgery and instead go home with a prescription for medication.

She also downplayed just how ***** she was to the newlyweds, telling them not to worry as they had just married and were building a life in Australia together.

Two years on, now 59-year-old Joy’s condition has deteriorated to the point she needs life-saving surgery, her daughter-in-law said — even though she still tries to hide it from her children.

Danline said Joy ’s body is “shutting down”, she’s having difficulty breathing and struggling to pass ******.

But she has continued to put off the surgery, with the family going into bankruptcy in the Philippines and under immense stress.

“You can see in her eyes, she is really worried even though she doesn’t tell us,” Danline said, adding Joy still tried to avoid telling her children the extent of her health conditions to save them from worrying.

But if she doesn’t have surgery soon, she is at high risk of another heart ******* that could be fatal — and Danline and Gian are desperately trying to come up with the money needed.

“My husband is really not in a good headspace at the moment — it’s really hard for him because he’s the firstborn, and he couldn’t get any help from his brother,” Danline said.

“He’s the only one helping his mum and his dad.”

Doctors have said as well as the angiogram, Joy may also need three stents in her heart — at a cost of about $A13,000 each.

“We’re praying that we will (get enough money),” Danline said.
