Crytek Shuts Down Its Battle Royale Game and Pivots To Focus On Crysis 4

Details have recently leaked online about a Crysis battle royale that’s allegedly been canceled. Instead of fans mourning what could have been, however, the move is being met with applause.

Titled Crysis Next, Crytek was allegedly working on the project for quite some time. The supposed decision to cancel it might’ve been a good one, as it looks like battle royale fatigue has hit the gaming community hard.

It’s Probably Over for the Crysis Battle Royale

While fans were eagerly waiting for a Crysis 4, Crytek was quietly toiling away on a battle royale that never saw the light of day. At least, until now.

Details about the ill-fated project were only made known to the public after company documents mentioning it leaked back in 2020. The game is making its way into the conversations again, however, after gameplay footage started making the rounds online.

The leaked footage is surprising, to say the least. It shows a player dropping onto a map from a plane, battling other players in typical battle royale fashion, navigating the main menu, and using a variety of weapons.

For a game that was never officially announced, it’s amusing to see just how far along in development it got.

Despite the company’s efforts to remove the videos, the internet is proving once again that it’s like a Hydra. Gameplay clips get reuploaded as fast as the originals can be taken down.

Fans Are Happier Than Ever to See the Project Go Down

It’s not a subtle reaction that fans are having to know of the project’s alleged cancellation. They’re happy, and they’re showing it.

It’s clear what fans want—for them, the studio needs to stick to what it does best, which is making memorable single-player experiences. Chasing trends won’t do it any favors.

Several people mention their disdain or general fatigue for battle royales.

The studio taking a fan-favorite franchise and turning it into one would just get lost in an ever-growing pile of titles in the genre.

Fans have been hoping for a while now to see a new entry into the mainline franchise. With Crysis 3 having shut its multiplayer servers down, no doubt having a sequel with an active multiplayer scene would do wonders for the franchise.

If the battle royale indeed has been canceled, it seems logical that the studio is going back to focusing development efforts on the previously announced sequel.

Are you part of the group of fans happy to see the battle royale allegedly canceled? Or, would you have liked to give it a shot? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
