, CDPR’s Nowakowski explained that gamers shouldn’t expect Witcher 4 to be a Witcher 3 in a new avatar as the game is nothing like its predecessors. He said,

You should not be expecting ‘The Witcher 3 in new clothing’ of sorts; of course, we’re building on the shoulders of what came before, and on what we’ve learned, but we will be adding new gameplay elements and new mechanics that you have not seen in our previous games.

The studio has made some errors in the past so it seems like they are spending a lot of time working on the game before it is ready for a final release. The third Witcher game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, also took three and a half years to develop.
