Helen Matthews obituary: First lady of jazz never looked back

In pubs and concert halls, at festivals, vineyards and yacht clubs, and on beaches, the Jazz Divas mixed songs with strong spirit. Any lack of a formal venue was no great barrier. If necessary, as in WA’s Goldfields, the six women performed on the backs of trucks.

The group’s member, teacher and manager was the totally organised and inspirational Helen Matthews, whose music career of over 50 years made her known as “Western Australia’s first lady of jazz”. Sharing her love of this genre brought her satisfaction in spades.
