Fremantle’s finals fate is firmly in the hands of their old coach and his St Kilda outfit, with a win over Carlton needed to keep the Dockers in the hunt for September.

That’s because the Western Bulldogs punched their ticket to the finals with a gritty 37-point win over GWS in Ballarat, with the result failing to aid Freo’s push to jump into the eight on Round 24’s Super Sunday.

If the Saints salute against Carlton at Marvel Stadium, Fremantle will finish eighth if they can get past Port Adelaide – and set up an elimination final date with Brisbane at the Gabba in a fortnight’s time.

Former Docker and soon-to-be Coleman medallist Jesse Hogan played his part for GWS with a couple of goals, including one late in the third term that kept the Giants within touching distance with an 11-point deficit at three-quarter time.

But the Dogs came home strong with the aid of a significant breeze in the final quarter, with WA duo Aaron Naughton and Artie Jones both kicking late goals to help seal the result.

The result locks in a Bulldogs-Hawthorn elimination final at the MCG.
