Diorites and Panthers in final tune-up before GFLW finals next weekend

A keen rivalry between Mines Rovers and Railways in the Goldfields Football League’s women’s division continues on Saturday in a dress rehearsal for next weekend’s second semifinal match-up between the same clubs.

After finishing third last year with 11 wins, Mines Rovers are ideally poised for a tilt at a maiden GFLW flag with 13 wins, against one loss and a draw, and are on an 11-game winning run.

The squad’s lead over second-placed Panthers is just one game, but the Diorites — should they lose this weekend — go into the clash at Digger Daws Oval with a percentage advantage of a whopping 228.5.

Since the teams battled out a tense draw in round five, Mines Rovers have had the red-and-*******’ measure in two subsequent clashes, by eight points and 22 points.

Railways’ 1.3 (9) in round 15 was their lowest score of the season, but they boast two of the competition’s most consistent forwards, Marley Kelman and Drew Epis.

Mines Rovers’ Chanelle Halligan leads the GFLW goal kicking standings with 38 from Kelman (35), Epis (34) and Kalgoorlie’s Wiebke Piringer (31).

Also in Saturday’s last qualifying round, Kambalda host Boulder at West Kambalda Oval.

Boulder are entrenched in third place with eight wins — four more than two-time reigning premiers Kalgoorlie.

Kalgoorlie, who have a bye this weekend, cannot finish higher than fourth and play the Tigers in next weekend’s first semifinal.

In last weekend’s round 19 matches, Piringer kicked eight goals in the Roos’ 77-point win against Kambalda, 12.11 (83) to 1.0 (6).

The ******-and-*******’ fourth win was built on a seven-goals-to-none first half.

Pippa Schultz was the goal kicker for Kambalda.

Kelman kicked three goals and Zaleema Bourne contributed two in Railways’ 22-point win against Boulder, 5.7 (37) to 2.3 (15).

Boulder won the remaining three terms, but they ultimately paid a heavy price after being outscored to quarter-time, 4.3 to zero.

GFLW draw:

Mines Rovers v Railways at Digger Daws Oval.

At 11am:

Kambalda v Boulder at Kambalda West Oval.

Ladder:

Mines Rovers 54; Railways 50; Boulder 32; Kalgoorlie 16; Kambalda 0.
