Sharpshooter Martin says Kalgoorlie ready to have red-hot ****** at GFL flag

Kalgoorlie forward Jack Martin, fresh off his 14 goals last weekend against Kambalda, says he looks forward to what the rejuvenated Roos can bring to the Goldfields Football League’s finals series.

It was the 30-year-old’s best haul since joining the ******-and-******* this year from Boulder, but he is most excited about the squad’s prospects against Boulder in next weekend’s first semifinal and hopefully, beyond.

After sitting in fourth place for most of the qualifiers, Kalgoorlie last weekend moved into third place at the expense of the Tigers.

If it stays that way after this Saturday’s last round, the Roos — who have a bye this weekend — will host next Sunday’s first semifinal with what ideally would be their strongest team all season.

In a rare occasion last weekend when the forward trio of Martin, Glen Gascoyne and Ricky Whitehead lined up in the same team, they combined for 25 goals.

“It was a pretty tough decision (to leave Boulder), but I was just wanting to play alongside some of my childhood mates that I’d grown up with, like Dylan Clarke,” he said.

“Hopefully I’ve got a few years still left in me and as far as that (his 14 goals) the boys looked after me.

“But at the same time, it’s always nice to kick a big bag and the mood is currently very good around the club.

“If everyone can pull their weight come finals, I reckon we can have a real ****** at it.”

Gascoyne started the season in the reserves but could be a wildcard for the squad in the finals.

“He’s a very good goal kicker — regardless of what grade he’s playing or where he’s playing,” Martin said.

“He’ll always bob-up and kick goals for the side and being around six-foot-seven is a pretty good advantage, too.

“Everyone’s hitting great form at just the right time of the year and there’s definitely a fair bit of belief around the club that with the boys we’ve got, we can achieve something special.

“Hopefully we can make that happen.”

Martin said the allure of finishing third was a big incentive against Kambalda in a match they won by 231 points.

“We were always striving for that percentage,” he said.

“That was the drive, but we got pulled in during the third quarter because of lightning — we had to come to an agreement to play the last quarter as 20 minutes with no time-on.

“Otherwise the score would have reverted back to half-time.

“We were pushing that pretty hard, just so we could hopefully get some percentage up on Boulder.”
