Margaret River dominates South West surf-off at Smiths Beach as State juniors looms

South West schools have come together for their annual surf-off as the young contenders prepare for next week’s State titles.

Margaret River Senior High School emerged victorious overall despite the awful conditions for the competition on Friday August 16 at Smiths Beach.

MRSHS surf academy teacher Mark Meyer said the students did as well as they were able to given the challenging surf.

“In horrible windy conditions the surfers made the conditions look fun,” he told the Times.

“That is really a testament to their talent.”

Mr Meyer said MRSHS’ greatest strength this year was in the female divisions.

Teams featuring Olive Hardy and Leila Fraser claimed first position in the junior ******’ competition, while Kaleisha Launders and Ruby Berry took the win for the seniors.

Hardy and Fraser also claimed the ******’ senior bodyboarding contest, while Stella Annesley and Sienna Bowdell won in the juniors.

Mr Meyer said the most hotly contested division of the day was the junior boys’ final in a showdown between eventual winners Ethan Anderson and Jahli Clark, and Mackillop ********* College’s in-form Cruz Uros and Flynn Eastaugh.

Okie Fraser put on some big moves and grabbed some air in the final of the senior boys’ surfing that saw him and Macklin Flynn come out on top.

The junior boys’ bodyboarding was won by Ry Vincent and Ethan Ahola, while the senior boys’ competition was won by Jetaya Hammond and Flynn Howarth.

The contest had surfers competing in pairs, with the best two performances from each participant going towards the total.

Mr Meyer said the strong competition was good preparation for next week.

MRSHS is chasing its record 19th annual win in a row next week at the WA School Surf Titles, expected to be held at Trigg.

“The goal is to get some of the teams to nationals and have a strong performance there like last year,” Mr Meyer said.
