Girl power was celebrated in Bunbury at a science, technology, engineering and maths expo on Sunday.

Bunbury ********* College hosted the STEMXX Sisters event with long-term science teacher Annabel Kanakis at the helm.

About 40 leading women in the field and an additional 40 ****** benefited from the event, which was opened by Forrest MHR Nola Marino.

Following the event’s inaugural success last year, the Science Teachers’ Association of WA supported Ms Kanakis to host the event again.

“The purpose of STEMXX Sisters is to promote STEM careers to encourage young women to consider pursuing and succeeding in STEM subjects at both secondary and tertiary levels,” she said.

“Young women in South West WA have limited exposure to STEM workshops and career showcasing events, including opportunities to belong to STEM clubs and to compete in competitions that are primarily presented in Perth, and not in rural areas.”

“The event provided inspirational speakers, mostly younger women, who are already working in a STEM career.”

Cassie Budd was the keynote speaker and shared her journey to become a physiotherapist.

A number of workshops from areas including quantum physics and engineering, neuroscience, chemistry, soil testing and taxonomy of native plants were also held.

Ms Kanakis said the ****** experienced three workshops each on rotation.
