Scitech launches competition to name space debris that washed up on Green Head in 2023

Scitech is calling on West Aussies to help name a bizarre piece of space debris that washed ashore in the Mid West in 2023.

The huge object left authorities baffled when it was first discovered by a member of the public on a Green Head beach in July.

It took police three days to conclude the item was most likely space debris. The debris was later confirmed to have been a 500kg fuel tank from the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.

The object now sits in Scitech awaiting an official name and the West Perth science museum wants your help.

Scitech launched a naming competition in the hopes a creative West Aussie can come up with the perfect title.

“When a new species is discovered, scientists use a special way of naming it that involves two ****** words,” Scitech said.

“And when a new planet or moon is discovered, there is an official naming process conducted by the International Astronomical Union.

“But space debris doesn’t get an official name, which is why Scitech has launched a naming competition asking people of all ages to get creative and come up with a unique name for this fascinating space object.”

The debris sits in an exhibit that resembles the beach scenery where it was discovered.

“It tells the story of the journey it took from detaching from the rocket after burning through its fuel to falling several hundred kilometres into the Indian Ocean and drifting there for many years until ending up at Green Head.”

West Aussies have until Sunday to submit a name of up to 250 characters.
