City of Greater Geraldton extends appointments of HMAS Sydney II Memorial wardens for two years

Two key positions helping maintain Geraldton’s number one tourist attraction have been extended for two years.

The City of Greater Geraldton has reaffirmed the appointments of Peter (Spike) Jones and Warren Nathan as warden and deputy warden of the HMAS Sydney II Memorial for another two years.

They were appointed to the roles in 2022 after the departure of long-standing warden Don Rolston.

The warden is responsible for helping the council with the daily care and administration of the memorial, as well as attending to all matters of customs, traditions and protocols for commemorative ceremonies.

“Spike and Warren are dedicated wardens who have gone above and beyond for the HMAS Sydney II Memorial,” mayor Jerry Clune said.

“Because of this, as well as outstanding feedback from our stakeholders, we have reappointed their positions and look forward to continuing our work with them.

“HMAS Sydney II Memorial is Geraldton’s number one tourist destination, a large part of which is because of their ongoing service and commitment.”

Mr Jones welcomed the opportunity to continue to be of “service to the country as well as the city”.

“I have been involved with the HMAS Sydney II Memorial from the very first service back when the site was just a sand dune,” he said.

“I am proud to continue in this role and carry on the good work of those who came before us.”
