Andrew Gaff: West Coast Eagles great leaves legacy befitting of No.3 jumper, says Liam Duggan

West Coast co-captain Liam Duggan has declared that Andrew Gaff has put himself in the company of the greats who wore the club’s famous No.3 before him as the wingman made an emotional farewell on Sunday.

Gaff donned the No.3 jumper for the 280 and final time on Sunday, as Carlton defeated the Eagles by 65 points at Optus Stadium.

The left-footer had worn it since being drafted with pick No.4 in 2010, following in the footsteps of the late great Chris Mainwaring and dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd.

“The number has been on the back of some legends of our footy club and I think Gaffy puts himself into that category,” Duggan told The West ***********.

“Especially Gaffy in his prime with what he was able to do, for not only his own career but with the footy club at the time was huge in our successful *******.

“He’s been a great warrior for the footy club and a great teammate. So consistent. I think if you look back on your career and you’re known as Mr Consistent, that’s a pretty good note.”

Duggan said it would have been nice to send him off with “a fairytale story”, rather than a disappointing performance.

“To see him retire and sail off into the sunset, it would have been nice to give him one last win. We couldn’t get it for him (on Sunday),” Duggan said.

Despite knowing his career was coming to an end, Duggan said Gaff remained the same throughout the past fortnight.

“The professional he always has been… he was no different this week,” he said.

“You wouldn’t have known if someone didn’t tell you.”

Duggan said Gaff would leave a lasting legacy both at the club and with him personally.

“He’s become a great mate of mine. I love his humour, his wit. Really dry sense of humour and I appreciate that,” Duggan said.

“He’s been a great teammate and a great role model, especially for me.

“Playing a similar position as him when I was younger, he really helped shape me early as a footballer. I got to work with him really closely for a long ******* of time. I would say he’s just the perfect role model.”
