Worsley Alumina Community Grants Program open again for 2024

South32 has announced another round of funding for The Worsley Alumina Community Grants Program for 2024.

The program provides funding for organisations, projects and programs that provide a benefit to people in South West communities, making positive impacts.

Previous recipient Collie ***** Brigade received a grant in the February round earlier this year.

Chief bush ***** control officer Julian Martin said the Collie brigade now had access to battery powered chainsaws and chargers to use for ***** management activities thanks to the grant.

“Now that we are demonstrating the value of a much safer alternative to petrol powered chainsaws, I hope that one day in the future, battery powered chainsaws are opened up as a funded option for brigades to purchase with Emergency Services Levy funding,” he said.

“I know it will be on needs basis, but we need to start in the South West of WA where these types of saws will provide the most impact.

“If that happens, all firefighters will have South32 to thank for helping us to plant the seed and grow it from there with their invaluable community grants program.”

Mr Martin said if used effectively, one charged chainsaw could have the equivalent water-saving of hundreds, or thousands, of litres normally used to fully extinguish the same burning branches or logs.

“This means that water is saved and available in the ***** truck for when homes are needing to be saved or protected,” he said.

“It also saves firefighters time, being quicker to dock a burning branch off, then extinguish and cool it. (It) means fires are contained and controlled faster, and our firefighters are available for other fires or home to their families sooner.”

Grants of up to $5000 are available to eligible applicants that support community projects within the shires of Boddington, Collie, Murray, Wandering and Williams, or in Greater Bunbury and surrounds.

Applications are open until August 31 and can be made at the South32 website.
