Martin leads Kalgoorlie goal feast with 14 against Kambalda

A three-pronged forward line spearheaded by Jack Martin powered Kalgoorlie’s final hit-out before the finals that produced a 231-point win, 38.15 (243) to 2.0 (12), against Kambalda on Saturday to complete round 19 in the Goldfields Football League.

Martin kicked 14 goals — his best return across 14 games since joining the Roos this year from Boulder.

It eclipsed his haul of eight goals in round 14 against the Eagles and, alongside co-forwards Glen Gascoyne and Ricky Whitehead, sent an ominous warning to Boulder ahead of the first semifinal on Saturday week.

Gascoyne bagged six goals and Whitehead five among a squad that has a bye this weekend to finish the qualifiers.

Having all three fit-and-******* for the business end of the season is pivotal for Kalgoorlie, with Whitehead missing a fair chunk of the season.

However, his value is underpinned by 23 goals across seven games, including four in round 16 against flag favourites Railways.

Gascoyne has booted 29 goals in 11 senior games after opening the season in the reserves, and Martin trails only Railways’ Chris Yarran (71 goals) with 44 goals for the season.

Two other prime movers for the ******-and-*******, Bailey Norris and Bryce Fiorentino, each bagged three goals when Kalgoorlie piled on 17.9 (111) to half-time.

Kambalda had hoped for a big performance in Corey Hibberd’s 150th game, but only Brayden Sprigg Dos Santos and Noah Moore hit the score board.

Hibberd, who debuted with the Eagles in 2010, became just the seventh player in club history to reach the coveted 150-game milestone.

The Eagles play their last game of 2024 against Boulder at Kambalda West Oval, with the result determining third position and whether Kalgoorlie or Boulder host the first semifinal.

Kalgoorlie leapfrogged Boulder into third spot on the back of last weekend’s percentage-boosting win.
