Andrew Gaff excited to see West Coast Eagles future as he hangs up boots after 280 matches

Andrew Gaff believes he is leaving the Eagles in a promising position for the future as he hangs up the boots after 280 AFL bouts.

The veteran didn’t get the result he was after in his farewell clash at Optus Stadium on Sunday; the Eagles outclassed by a wounded Carlton to the tune of 65 points.

But the two-time All-*********** said the club had an amazing group, led by teenage sensation Harley Reid, that he was looking forward to watching from the stands.

“It wasn’t the ideal result today, and the boys were a bit off after an amazing couple of weeks,” he told ABC radio in the rooms after the match.

“It would have been lovely to have a win, but it’s okay.

“It’s been just amazing playing with a great bunch of guys. It’s not coming across on the scoreboard in the wins and losses, but I can really see some growth build, and looking forward to watching that in the next couple of years.”

It came as Gaff praised the “best supporter base in the league” after being chaired off in front of 48,455 fans in Perth.

“Sometimes you feel like it’s weird; people giving you love. I see myself as a pretty normal person, but it is nice, and the fans have been so supportive over the past 14, 15 years for me and all the boys,” he said.

“That’s why they’re the best supporter base in the league.”

The 32-year-old revealed minor surgery was on the cards in coming weeks to clean up a finger complaint but he was then looking forward to pursuing other sports such as golf, tennis and marathon running before choosing a post-footy career.

“It’s a little bit sad, but I’m also excited to just do something different and begin the next chapter in my life,” he said.

“It’s probably something that’s going to take a couple of days, a week, a month to probably sink in that footy is done for me, and I’ve got to find my second-ever job.

“I’m excited to take a little bit of time off and then assess sort of where to go from here.”

“I’ve missed playing a bit of tennis over the years, and I love my tennis, and I might have to get a little finger clean up once the season’s done.”
