Plays by famed *********** writers, some Shakespeare dropped from updated prescribed texts for ATAR literature

A play by Australia’s only winner of the Nobel prize for literature and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are among works to be cut from a list of drama texts recommended for Year 11 and 12 literature classes.

An updated list of prescribed texts for the ATAR literature course released last week — to come into use from next year — reveals some older works have been replaced by recent plays with contemporary themes in a bid to make the course more relevant.
