Aquarium of the Pacific Shows Animal Reactions to Recent Earthquake and It’s Fascinating

Located in Long Beach, California, the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to many ocean animals, including Giant Pacific octopuses, an array of fish, sharks, turtles, otters, penguins, and more. If it swims in the ocean, the aquarium probably has one! In mid-August, Southern California experienced a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked Los Angeles and surrounding areas. A fan asked the aquarium if their animals feel earthquakes, and so they posted a video showing how the animals reacted. It’s really cool to see!

The aquarium said that thanks to their explore.org cameras, they were able to look back at video at the time of the first jolt to see how the animals reacted. The sea bass and other fish definitely noticed it. The penguins, who are currently in migration mode, didn’t even bat an eye or flipper. Watch what happens in the shark lagoon – you can see waves forming!

It was so fascinating to see the animals’ reactions! It left me wondering how the turtles and jellyfish reacted, and of course, the even ******* animals like the walruses. Commenters appreciated that

posted the video as much as I did. Many comments, like @Theater of the Sea, said, “Glad everyone is safe! This is really cool to see!”

Do All Animals Feel Earthquakes?

@YankeeDave6 shared, “I’ve learned to check the USGS page when my dogs react a certain way, numerous times they’ve felt quakes that I did not.” I was born and raised in Southern California and lived there until about 5 years ago. We had

, and they always seemed to know an earthquake was coming, or just like YankeeDave’s dog, would react to ones we couldn’t feel. That made me wonder, do all animals feel earthquakes?

and other land animals not only feel them, but may be able to sense that they are coming. The shared these points:

When the 2005 tsunami struck the coast of Sri Lanka, over 100,000 people were *******, but only a handful of animals, despite the wave devastating the wildlife reserve.

During the Haicheng earthquake in the 1970s, animals were noted to behave strangely. Snakes woke from hibernation and evacuated their burrows, only to freeze as they tried to escape.

Before major hurricanes, land animals move inland, and insects hide in trees and under rocks.

The article went on to say, “If your cat becomes antsy or even hisses at you, it could indicate an earthquake.”

says that animals ‘feel’ earthquakes coming before humans do, but they cannot ‘predict’ when they are coming.

Whatever the reason, it’s so cool that animals know before we do! If you live somewhere that has frequent earthquakes, the next time your **** is acting strangely, pay attention! They just might be trying to tell you something.
