Matt Jones is hot on the leaders’ heels after the opening round of LIV Golf Greenbrier.

The *********** birdied the par-three 18th to card a six-under 64 to finish one behind leaders Talor Gooch, Sebastian Munoz and Jason Kokrak on Friday.

Jones put together six birdies in a flawless round to join Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Englishman Richard Bland.

One ******* behind them is Marc Leishman, who also avoided bogeys, while Queenslander Cam Smith is at four under.

Gooch holed out from the fairway for eagle on the par-4 fifth ***** and played bogey-free for his 63.

US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau was 10 shots worse than the last time he played at Greenbrier. That was his record 58 in the final round a year ago. This time he could only manage a 68 on a day of low scoring.

The 37 players from the 54-man field who broke par included Anthony Kim at 69.

Gooch, a one-time winner on the PGA Tour before going to the Saudi-funded league, won three times last year to lead the points list. He is without a victory this year and is 11th on the points list.

Ripper GC, comprising Jones, Lucas Herbert, Leishman and captain Smith, are second in the teams competition at 16 under.

The Australians are four behind the pace set by Smash GC, consisting Kokrak, Gooch, captain Koepka and John Catlin.
