Bar & Bites: Two decades of decadence and retro fun at Devilles Pad and Hula Bula Bar served up in new book

Cate Blanchett partied till late, Geoffrey Rush danced on stage, and Justin Timberlake ate three burgers at Devilles Pad.

Described as a “fun supper club in a Las Vegas/Liberace goes to ***** theme”, the Perth night spot featured go-go dancers, garish cocktails, retro decor and a smoking volcano on the dance floor.

Devilles Pad was once voted the fifth-best bar in the world in Lonely Planet.

Unfortunately, the bar closed in 2014, morphing into the now defunct Badlands, but left people from Perth (and further afield) with fond, if hazy, memories.

Like a good Mai **** *********, Devilles’ owners Skipper Josh and Barbara “Babz” Collins shook up the local bar scene, starting in 2005 with their other gloriously trashy tiki bar, Hula Bula Bar, which is still going stronger than a Gruesome Grog under new ownership.

Hula Bula once sold a $160 punch bowl called ******** Queen, which came with a fez hat and was delivered by a bartender in a gorilla suit.

The Collinses (no relation, although I wish) have since opened The LuWOW in Melbourne, and a Queensland tiki resort.

Now, the couple unveil The Lore Of The LuWOW: ********* Adventures And Tiki Bars A GoGo, a 240-page technicolour “pictorial frolic” through 20 years of cocktails, kitsch and ***** good times.

Published by Suffolk and Watt ***, the book features ********* recipes, stories and general reflections on their wild brand of hospitality.

These venues have hosted a who’s who of retro trash culture and underground rock’n’roll, but it was Lady Gaga who famously didn’t turn up to Devilles Pad because there wasn’t a VIP room. Her loss.

Skipper Josh and Babz swing by Perth for a book signing at Planet Books, Mt Lawley on August 28 from 6.30pm and a launch party at Hula Bula Bar in the city on August 29 from 7pm.

Much-loved ********* restaurant Nine Fine Food, also known as Nine ********* Bistro, will fall short of getting the key to the door.

Owner and chef Muneki Song opened his diner on Bulwer Street, Perth in November 2003.

After more than 20 years of excellent inventive sushi and sashimi dishes, Nine will close short of its 21st birthday.

“It was not an easy decision for us,” Song told B&B. “We’re incredibly grateful to have been a part of this community and to have had the privilege of providing happiness through our dining experience.”

He added that “increasingly challenging” economic conditions, including an imminent lease renewal and rising costs, forced his hand.

Song will offer a six-course omakase until Nine closes on August 24.

CROWEATERS’ FEASTS

South *********** icons Penfolds and Mayura Station join forces for two exclusive dinners at Toma, the meat and flame-loving establishment at Pirate Life Perth in the city.

Scott de Bruin from Mayura and Toma chef Charlie Vargas will collaborate on six courses paired with Penfolds wine during long table feasts — a lunch from 12.30pm, and dinner starting at 6pm on August 22.

While Penfolds needs no introduction, Mayura Station is an award-winning boutique beef producer specialising in full-blood Wagyu that started in 1845.
