Alastair Clarkson would ‘jump at West Coast job’ as he’s left surprised by candidates pulling out

As more prospective West Coast coaching candidates pull themselves out of the race, four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson says he is surprised by the lack of interest in the Eagles’ top job.

Since Adam Simpson was moved on as coach in July the list of potential replacements has been shrinking as several high-profile options drop out of the race.

Another two top contenders have rejected the Eagles’ interest, with West Coast premiership player Ash Hansen and Essendon assistant Daniel Giansiracusa both opting to stay in Melbourne for family reasons.

Their rejections follow that of Dean Cox, former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley, Port Adelaide assistant Josh Carr and Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham.

It leaves interim coach Jarrad Schofield as the current front-runner for the job with Clarkson bemused as to why there isn’t more competition.

“If I was an assistant coach, I would be jumping at that job. They’re the best-resourced club in the comp,” he said on SEN.

“I am surprised they’re not going for it because there are only 18 jobs in the land, there may be some ***** of being knocked back but that’s life, you have to put your hand up otherwise you’ll never get the job.

“That’s the plum job of the competition how could you want anything better, a really historical success and are really, really well financed and supported, I’d be grabbing that as quickly as I could.”

A third straight victory for Schofield over Carlton this weekend could seal his move to the full-time role but the Eagles are still seeking other options despite their growing list of rejections.

Andrew McQualter has emerged as the latest candidate to be approached by the Eagles.

McQualter was assistant to Damien Hardwick for several years before taking over as Richmond’s caretaker coach after Hardwick stepped down coaching the Tigers to a 7-6 record in his 13 games in charge but ultimately missed out on the full-time role to Adam Yze.

GWS assistant Brett Montgomery is also still in the race, having been approached back in July and received a ringing endorsement from Giants coach Adam Kinglsey.

“I think they’d be **** not to talk to him and interview him. I think he’d be a fantastic coach,” Kingsley said.

“He’s really well-rounded, he’s been in the game a long time. I think he’d do a wonderful job irrespective of the club he’s coaching at but I’d see him having a significant impact at that footy club (West Coast).”

Western Bulldogs assistant coach Brendon Lade, who was a senior assistant at St Kilda is also believed to be among the candidates.
