  2. Local battler Jacob Willcox hopes ‘reality check’ can lead to redemption while teenage gun powers to trial win Local battler Jacob Willcox hopes ‘reality check’ can lead to redemption while teenage gun powers to trial win A year after missing the mid-season cut and losing his place on surfing’s elite world tour, Jacob Willcox is dreaming of redemption in his own backyard. The local favourite will compete in his eighth Margaret River Pro when the competition window opens on Saturday, having this year done it the hard way by winning through the trials. The 27-year-old had been a full-time member of the World Surf League’s championship tour to start 2024, having won qualification via the challenge series the previous year. That was a watershed moment for the one-time teen prodigy following several heartbreaking near-misses after he initially announced himself to the world surfing by beating legend Kelly Slater in Portugal as a 16-year-old wildcard in 2013. But the ecstasy of that qualification breakthrough was soon ripped away after only five events that saw him make it past the round-of-32 once, before being cut. Willcox said getting another chance to compete in front of his home crowd at Margaret River was why he still loved surfing. “Last year was a bit of a reality check, and it feels amazing to be competing again,” he said after edging out Yallingup’s Jack Thomas in a high-stakes trials finale that brought the beach to its feet. “All the feelings I had today were epic, and I can’t wait to surf with no pressure in front of my home crowd.” Camera IconWA Trials winners Jacob Willcox and Willow Hardy. Supplied Credit: Supplied/Surfing WA Willcox posted the highest individual score of the day at Surfers Point, a near-perfect 9.00, on his opening wave of the final and backed it up with a 7.73, finishing with a combined 16.73 (out of a possible 20). Thomas, a past qualifier at the event, rallied with some brilliant surfing of his own, finishing with a two-wave total of 15.58. Goofy-footer Willcox will face stiff competition in his opening heat of the Pro, having been drawn against current world No.1 Italo Ferreira of Brazil and fellow Aussie George Pittar, who made a sparkling run to last year’s semifinals in Margaret River as a wildcard. Seven other Aussie’s are in the men’s draw, including another local favourite Jack Robinson, a two-time winner in Margaret River, who has drawn Marco Mignot of France and Ian Gentil of Hawaii in the opening round. On the women’s side, rising star Willow Hardy delivered a composed and powerful performance to claim a trials victory over close friend and fellow Margaret River charger Kaleisha Launders. Set to compete on the challenger series later this year, Hardy looked every bit the future champion, finishing with a two-wave total of 14.51, including two scores in the seven point plus range. Launders, who showed incredible endurance and spirit by surfing four heats to reach the final, finished on a 10.06 combined total. “I can’t believe it, I’m so stoked,” Hardy, 18, said. “It’s amazing. We all grew up watching the world’s best surf here, and the fact that we now get to join them is incredible. Surfing WA does such an amazing job with this event, it’s one we all look forward to and love.” Hardy will also face a current women’s world No.1, defending Maragret River champion Gabriela Bryan of Hawaii, along with Vahine Fierro of France/Tahiti. She joins five other Aussie’s in the field, including another local hope, Bronte Macaulay, who has come out of retirement after being granted a wildcard by organisers. 3. Indian travel firms report drop in Turkey bookings over Pakistan support Indian travel firms report drop in Turkey bookings over Pakistan support By Hritam Mukherjee BENGALURU (Reuters) – Indians are cancelling holidays in popular resorts in Turkey and Azerbaijan after the countries supported Pakistan during its recent conflict with New Delhi, two booking firms said. Ties between India and Pakistan nosedived after a deadly attack in Indian Kashmir last month that New Delhi said was backed by Islamabad. Pakistan denied involvement, but intense fighting broke out when India struck what it said were “terrorist camps” in Pakistan last week. They agreed a ceasefire on Saturday which has largely held. Turkey and Azerbaijan, popular budget holiday destinations for Indians, issued statements backing Islamabad after India’s strikes. “Bookings for Azerbaijan and Turkey decreasing by 60% (over the last week) while cancellations have surged by 250% during the same *******,” a spokesperson for MakeMyTrip said. EaseMyTrip’s Chief Executive Officer, Rikant Pittie, said the platform had seen a 22% rise in cancellations for Turkey and 30% for Azerbaijan “due to recent geopolitical tensions”. Travellers had switched to Georgia, Serbia, Greece, Thailand and Vietnam, he added. Another ticketing platform, ixigo, earlier said in a post on X that it would be suspending flight and hotel bookings for Turkey, Azerbaijan and China. EaseMyTrip’s founder and chairman Nishant Pitti said in a post on X that 287,000 Indians visited Turkey last year and 243,000 visited Azerbaijan. “When these nations openly support Pakistan, should we fuel their tourism and their economies?” Pitti said. 4. Nvidia recoups its losses for the year Nvidia recoups its losses for the year Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at the Hill & Valley Forum 2025 on April 30 in Washington, D.C. Jemal Countess | Getty Images Entertainment | Getty Images The “Magnificent Seven” group of stocks — comprising Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla — drove much of the S&P 500’s sterling 23.31% gain in 2024. They have also been some of the hardest stocks hit by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Those that rely heavily on global supply chains and export markets, such as Apple and Nvidia, suffered the most. By contrast, Meta and Microsoft, which derive more of their revenue from digital services, such as ad sales or enterprise software, actually saw their shares head upward this year. On Wednesday, Nvidia joined Meta and Microsoft to become the third member of the Magnificent Seven to trade in the green year to date. It’s a significant move because the chipmaker — as the word suggests — doesn’t deal in intangible products that can slip through trade barriers. Nvidia’s recovery suggests that deal-making under Trump — in terms of tariff agreements and broad bilateral ties, such as those he is forging with Saudi Arabia on his state visit — is providing businesses with a better environment. But it also emphasizes how volatile the market can be this year, when the engine behind 2024’s blistering rally can sputter out within the weeks surrounding Trump’s “Liberation Day.” What you need to know today Three-day winning streak for S&P 500U.S. markets traded mixed Wednesday. The S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.72%. The tech-heavy index was lifted by a 4.7% rise in AMD shares after the chip company announced a $6 billion share buyback as well as a jump in Nvidia shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.21%. Asia-Pacific stocks fell Thursday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined around 0.9% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped nearly 1%. Nvidia is back in the greenNvidia on Wednesday climbed more than 4% on the back of news that it would sell more than 18,000 of its top artificial intelligence chips to Saudi Arabia. The share move puts Nvidia into positive territory for the year, becoming the latest “Magnificent 7” member stock to return to the green amid the for broader market’s recovery. Amazon, Alphabet, Tesla and Apple are still facing year-to-date losses in their share prices. Largest deal for Boeing and Qatar AirwaysBoeing and Qatar Airways on Wednesday announced a deal for the Middle Eastern airline to buy up to 210 jets during Trump’s state visit with the emir of Qatar. The order, which is the biggest in Qatar Airways’ history — and for Boeing, according to Trump — is a boost to the beleaguered planemaker, which hasn’t posted a profit since 2018. ‘I like you too much’: Trump to Saudi crown princeAt the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum on Tuesday that was attended by CEOs such as Tesla’s Elon Musk, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and BlackRock’s Larry Fink, Trump gave a speech in which he praised Saudi Arabia and told the country’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — who was in the audience — “I like you too much.” Trump also met with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia the same day. [PRO] Stocks could retest April lows: Steve CohenSteve Cohen, founder of investment firm Point72, said he thinks stocks could “go back toward the lows” in April and that there’s a 45% chance of a recession. Cohen, however, said a decline in the stock market would not necessarily be a “calamity.” And finally… Critical minerals such as cobalt, nickel, copper and manganese can be found in potato-sized nodules at the bottom of the seafloor. Pallava Bagla | Corbis News | Getty Images Trump’s critical minerals drive paves the way for a deep-sea gold rush Seeking to counter China’s mineral dominance, the Trump administration in April signed a sweeping executive order to fast-track deep-sea mining within U.S. and international waters. The move is designed to help private companies access billions of tons of potato-sized rocks known as polymetallic nodules, which are rich in strategically important minerals. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a government agency, appeared to welcome Trump’s announcement, saying the executive order heralds “the next gold rush” and lays the ground for “a thriving domestic manufacturing industry.” Source link #Nvidia #recoups #losses #year Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  6. Westfield Booragoon: WA Planning Commission approves four-year extension on renovation commencement Westfield Booragoon: WA Planning Commission approves four-year extension on renovation commencement The WA Planning Commission has approved Scentre Group’s request for a four-year extension on Westfield Booragoon shopping centre’s mammoth renovation. The $792 million plan to redevelop the shopping centre was approved in 2023 on the condition that substantial commencement be made by February 2025. On Thursday, the substantial commencement deadline was officially extended to February 2029. Scentre Group claimed the extension was needed due to labour shortages and supply chain issues. “Builders and key trades continue to confront labour shortages and supply chain issues, which are generating significant cost and delivery uncertainty,” the application prepared by consultant planner Urbis states. “Due to these extenuating circumstances, the proponent is unable to achieve substantial commencement within the currently specified *******.” Speaking on behalf of the developer, Farida Farrag said the four-year extension is a “realistic estimate” in today’s climate. We are excited about our vision for Westfield Booragoon and our plans to create a contemporary retail, dining and entertainment destination for the community. “Scentre Group have demonstrated a strong commitment to proceed with the development, but for the reasons outlined in our application substantial commencement hasn’t been achieved within the two year approval *******,” she said. “The proposal can achieve substantial commencement within the requested timeframe extension to February 2029. “The requested extension will enable Scentre Group to continue collaborating with the City of Melville, creating a true town centre as envisioned by the Melville City Centre Structure Plan. “We’re seeking no other variations to the balance of approval conditions, approved uses or the approved design which have been proposed within the initial application.” A Scentre Group spokesperson told PerthNow they still intended to turn Westfield Booragoon into a destination shopping centre akin to Karrinyup Shopping Centre and Westfield Carousel. “We have lodged a request to extend the ******* of substantial commencement to enable further planning. The development opportunity remains part of our investment pipeline,” the spokesperson said. “We are excited about our vision for Westfield Booragoon and our plans to create a contemporary retail, dining and entertainment destination for the community.” The existing shopping centre was built more than 50 years ago and was last expanded and refurbished in 1999. An additional 72,500 sqm of shopping space is planned, which if completed would boost Westfield Booragoon to 114,620sqm and give it the bragging rights of WA’s largest shopping centre. That title currently belongs to Karrinyup, which has 114,000sqm floor space. 7. Nvidia, Super Micro Computer, Sony: Trending Tickers Nvidia, Super Micro Computer, Sony: Trending Tickers 00:00 Speaker A First up, chip stocks climbing, Nvidia extending its rally after announcing a deal to sell chips to Saudi Arabia. Super Micro Computer also higher after entering a partnership with Data Vault, a data center operator based in Saudi Arabia. You’re taking a look at shares of both of those tickers here. Uh they are moving higher pre-market here. Super Micro jumping, jumping as Destiny’s Child would say, by about 20% right now. And of course, this wave of deals still adding a question back onto the table of will these chips actually stay in Saudi Arabia? Will they make their way into other countries? That was one of the larger risks that was of concern, especially given how the kind of chip flow internationally has been also deemed a national security threat as well. That aside, you think about some of the opportunities that Nvidia is looking for in other countries if there continues to be a roadblock for them to sell into the Asia-Pacific region, specifically in China, and where they could potentially see some of these dollars and commitments flow into their business as well. Saudi Arabia this week, of course, is the du jour for all of these businesses. 02:14 Speaker B Right. Yeah. Security, security, I guess is is the theme coming out of all of these talks in the Middle East, right? With all of this following of the money and following of the big deals. And we keep talking about this morning the Bank of America commentary around this, calling this a multi-billion dollar opportunity for these chip companies. Um and Bank of America talks about sovereign AI. That’s sort of the buzzword name for these um countries investing in their own sort of governmental AI and data center build out. And BVA says quote this that that sovereign AI nicely complements commercial cloud investments with the focus on training and inference of LLMs in local culture, language and needs, could be 15, 10 to 15% or $50 billion dollars plus annually in the longer term in terms of the AI infrastructure opportunity. And Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia has talked a lot about sovereign AI in the past and working with these countries on this stuff. 04:22 Speaker A Absolutely. 04:24 Speaker B Yeah. Well, next, Sony warning of a $680 million hit to profits this year due to President Trump’s tariffs. Company also announcing a $1.7 billion share buyback and provided details on the partial spin-off of its financial unit here. Um so the company’s forecast not definitely not necessarily pleasing investors here. Um but the company is pushing ahead with this buyback and also gave a forecast for how many PlayStation 5s it plans to sell, um or it hopes to sell, 15 million in the year ending March 2026, its fiscal year, but that is a um a decrease from the 18 and a half million units that it sold uh in the last fiscal year. 05:45 Speaker A Which is interesting. I mean, they’re raising prices too in several key regions here, in some of the international markets, Australia, New Zealand, Europe. Uh and still citing a challenging economic environment here, including high inflation, uh fluctuating exchange rates as well here. So PS5 prices still on the rise there in those strategic markets here. Also, one of the other things that I kind of noted off here, um looking at the half a percent drop in the previous year uh versus the previous year in revenue in this most recent most recent release for Sony here. Uh and then looking at some of the other categories, we’ve talked about how difficult, or at least it’s come to the president’s attention, how difficult the the media and specifically in some of the motion picture and the box office production, how difficult that environment is right now with within that larger division for Sony here. Uh we’re taking a look at some of the sales within uh pictures coming in at 1.493 um in in sales at least, uh billion. Uh and thinking about what that means more broadly here, I think all of them are in a massive kind of investment phase for some of those motion pictures, and we’ll see be interesting to see what Sony continues to say on that front as well. 10. Final warning: Cowboys coach cautioned for ref comments Final warning: Cowboys coach cautioned for ref comments Todd Payten has been handed a final warning to stop criticising match officials after the North Queensland coach struggled to contain himself during a post-match tirade. Payten took aim at a handful of refereeing decisions in his side’s 30-30 draw with Penrith last Saturday, saying he would not accept similar “howlers” from his players. The coach felt the referees missed a forward pass ahead of a Penrith try and were incorrect to penalise Murray Taulagi for a high tackle that allowed the Panthers to move upfield and score. “One of the (Panthers’) tries was off a forward pass so I tell you how to fix that. Make the right call … Get it right. Get it right,” Payten said. “I’ll talk to the NRL through the week, go through the right channels, but it’s just white noise. ‘Yeah, we got that wrong’. But no one’s held accountable for it. “If it’s my player making error after error, or a couple of howlers, then there’s a fair chance he’s not in the team.” On Thursday, the NRL released a statement firing back at Payten for his “repeated and consistent criticism”, which the league said dated back five years. While serving as interim Warriors coach in 2020, Payten said he had given referees boss Bernard Sutton a “piece of (my) mind” over calls that had “infuriated” him in a loss to Gold Coast. In 2022, he questioned whether in-form teams were given “the benefit of the doubt” by referees more than their struggling rivals, and said later that season the bunker was “too inconsistent” in officiating sin bins. The NRL has pledged a harsher stance on negative post-match commentary towards referees. “Mr Payten has been reminded of his obligations under the NRL Rules and Code of Conduct as well as his general responsibility as a sporting leader to set an appropriate example to grassroots and junior participants across the broader rugby league community,” the NRL said in a statement. The depot, described as one of Russia’s largest, suffered severe damage from huge blasts in April. The MOD said on Wednesday that Moscow has a history of “ineptitude” with munition safety. A combination of poor weapons handling and bad storage practices likely led to the blasts that rocked Russia’s 51st GRAU arsenal in late April, the *** Defense Ministry said on Wednesday. In an intelligence update, the ministry estimated that the explosions likely resulted in the Kremlin’s largest loss of its own munitions due to its own troops’ actions since the full-scale war in Ukraine began. “It is highly likely that poor weapons handling procedures alongside negligent storage of munitions resulted in this loss,” the ministry wrote. “This is in keeping with a long-standing trend of regularly evidenced Russian ineptitude with regards the safe and proper handling of its own munitions,” it added. The ammunition depot, about 50 miles northeast of Moscow and in the Vladimir region, suffered multiple explosions after it caught fire on April 22. Though it didn’t name the facility, the Kremlin had said on the same day that a fire at a depot in the Vladimir region caused munitions to detonate. This April 24 image shows extensive damage.Planet Labs The *** defense ministry said satellite images showed that more than one square kilometer of the depot had been damaged by the detonations, which suggested “massive losses at a key strategic depot supplying Russia’s war in Ukraine.” Footage circulating on social media of the blast also appeared to show secondary explosions in the civilian areas around the ammo depot, which is one of Russia’s largest. The ***’s defense ministry cited Ukrainian figures that said the 51st GRAU depot held about 105,000 tons of munitions, including ballistic, air-launched, and air defense missiles. APEC, group of 21 economies, warns of growth slowdown over trade tensions APEC, group of 21 economies, warns of growth slowdown over trade tensions SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – 2025/04/16: An APEC 2025 large-scale promotional video and a statue of King Sejong the Great are seen at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul. Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images An intergovernmental grouping of 21 economies including the United States and China warned Thursday that their collective growth risks a sharp slowdown, as tariff tensions and policy uncertainty weigh on investment and trade. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forecasts growth to drop to 2.6% in 2025, from 3.6% in the prior year. “From tariff hikes and retaliatory measures to the suspension of trade facilitation procedures and the proliferation of non-tariff barriers, we are witnessing an environment that is not conducive to trade,” said Carlos Kuriyama, Director of the APEC Policy Support Unit, at a meeting in South Korea. Kuriyama also said that the uncertainty was weighing on business confidence, leading many firms to delay investments and new product launches until the situation turned “more predictable.” The gathering comes at time when U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade stance and massive “reciprocal” tariffs have invited retaliatory measures from partners. While the “reciprocal” tariffs have been suspended, the environment remains fraught with uncertainty. Kuriyama noted that restoring confidence in trade requires not only easing tensions, but also actions such as strengthening supply chain resilience and improving transparency of trade rules and procedures. Comments from former and current trade officials to CNBC also echoed this view, emphasizing the importance of predictability in global trade. Former ********* trade minister Mary Ng told “Squawk Box Asia” that what companies, entrepreneurs, and countries are looking for trade agreements that offer trading partners a certain predictability for doing business with each other. Ng was trade minister when Trump imposed 25% levies on steel and aluminum — U.S. is Canada’s largest market for steel — and had sought a formal consultation with the U.S. to address tariff-related issues. “I think that all of us owe it to our economies, to our people, to our businesses, to do our level best, to create the right conditions environments, so that predictability is there, so that the rules are there, so that business can count on that and they can plan on that. That’s what they look to governments to do.” Malaysian Trade and Investment Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who welcomed the recent de-escalation of trade tensions between the U.S. and China, emphasized on the importance of dialogue between countries. Malaysia and other ASEAN countries believe in a “rules-based multilateral trading system, he told CNBC. World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also attended the event and urged that “there should be dialogue with the U.S. to find out why did we get where we are and what can we do about it” She cautioned about U.S.-China tensions, saying that “if the world breaks up into two global trading blocks, we could lose 7% in global GDP in the longer term.” Source link #APEC #group #economies #warns #growth #slowdown #trade #tensions Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

These post-installation issues appear to be quite widespread and affect mostly Nvidia users thus far. Other affected sections include general progression and trophies. Thankfully, developer id Software has released a day one patch for everyone. Some issues are still persistent, though, which can be found discussed below (along with their fixes). id Software drops a massive list of known PC-specific bugs for Doom: The Dark Ages As detailed within the official Steam page for Doom: The Dark Ages, id Software has already identified a list of several, persistent issues across the game. Doom: The Dark Ages has a ton of bugs | Image Credits: id Software These issues are due to be patched out very soon, and include both performance and progression-related bugs, many of which can be attributed to driver issues (and the fact that the game is yet to receive this Day 1 patch). More on these targeted bug fixes below: 1) Nvidia-specific bugs Nvidia’s latest RTX 5000 series has not been well received by the public, and Doom: The Dark Ages’ problems make things a whole lot worse this time around. RTX GPUs are having a bad time in Doom: The Dark Ages | Image Credits: Nvidia In particular, the newest drivers for Nvidia (576.40, as of the time of writing this article) are known to be quite unstable and may result in crashes and strange glitches. The known issues thus far (specific to Nvidia hardware) are as follows: Enabling G-Sync and/or V-Sync Multi Frame Generation with an Nvidia RTX 5000 series card will ****** the game. Playing the game with an RTX 4000 or RTX 5000 class GPU will show V-Sync as enabled, once you have Frame Generation toggled on – even when V-Sync is disabled. This is a minor bug and does not affect gameplay or performance in any way. Alt-Tabbing while launching the game might make it launch in background, and remain completely inaccessible. Avoid Alt-Tabbing during launch for now. Starting a gameplay recording using Shadowplay (with Multi-Frame Generation set to 3x or 4x) will ****** or even lock up the entire system. Avoid using Shadowplay for now on RTX 5000 GPUs. Older generation GPUs are unaffected. Swapping to fullscreen (using Alt-Tab) while recording with OBS may result in the game locking up and freezing. Players will likely have to wait for a fix from either OBS, or switch to Fullscreen or Borderless Fullscreen mode for now. 2) AMD-specific bugs AMD’s FSR implementation hasn’t really been the greatest (especially when compared to DLSS), and The Dark Ages’ usage of Frame Generation has some rather odd behaviour: The game can lock up while resizing its window when AMD’s FSR Frame Generation is left enabled. Avoid resizing windows manually with FSR frame gen on. 3) Intel CPU specific bugs Intel’s issues with its 13th and 14th generation of CPUs strike again for Doom: The Dark Ages, and there seems to be no other solution than to have the CPU entirely replaced for now. There is exactly one issue pertaining to Intel hardware at the moment: Running the game on Intel CPUs of the 13th or 14th generation might result in persistent crashing. This is likely a hardware issue, and cannot be resolved with bug fixes. 4) Other miscellaneous bugs These bugs are likely to be fixed short-term and are not vendor-specific. More on these two issues below: Unplugging your secondary monitor while playing the game might cause it to freeze. Those without multi-monitor setups should be unaffected. The game may run into stability-related issues while using either the MSI Afterburner and/or Rivatuner overlays. Consider using alternative overlays for the time being (the built-in Windows Xbox Game Bar is a decent substitute). Most of these issues seem to be driver-specific, and readers might have to wait until AMD and Nvidia release patches that target the same. Updated drivers should be made available soon, and are recommended to be installed as soon as possible. Those with Nvidia GPUs might find it better not to update drivers for the time being. Alternatively, consider rolling back your drivers to the prior stable version using software such as DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). 15. In Israel’s Demolition Path, West Bank Residents Pack Up Their Lives In Israel’s Demolition Path, West Bank Residents Pack Up Their Lives When Israel informed the ************ Authority that it planned to demolish dozens of buildings in crowded parts of a border city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, the notification set off a panic. Hundreds of Palestinians in the border city, Tulkarm, learned that they would likely not be returning to their homes at the end of a sweeping Israeli offensive in the northern West Bank. “They’re causing a disaster,” said Nihad al-Shawish, the head of the services committee in the Nur Shams camp in Tulkarm. Since January, the Israeli military has conducted a large-scale military operation in three camps in the northern West Bank, displacing tens of thousands of people and causing widespread destruction. Israeli officials, who say the purpose of the campaign is to target militants and their weapons, have said the military should be prepared to remain in the camps for a year. The military has said the latest demolition of homes in Tulkarm was meant to make the city’s two camps, Tulkarm and Nur Shams, more accessible to Israeli forces and to prevent militants from regrouping there. Many Palestinians believe Israel is seeking to transform the camps, which have housed refugees and their descendants, into neighborhoods like the rest of Tulkarm. In recent days, Israel has allowed some residents of the camps to return to their homes to gather their belongings. Nasr al-Jundi, 45, a resident of Nur Shams, said he only had time to grab only some of his belongings on Tuesday, including clothing, a television, a fan, a microwave and a sauté pan. “They’re taking away my dreams,” he said. Later, residents of the camp assembled on a nearby hill, watching a bulldozer knock down homes. Melbourne Storm football boss Frank Ponissi says not picking his team to go to Las Vegas was a missed opportunity and a “kick in the guts” Melbourne Storm football boss Frank Ponissi says not picking his team to go to Las Vegas was a missed opportunity and a “kick in the guts” Melbourne Storm football boss Frank Ponissi has lashed the NRL after his team was overlooked for the season-opener in Las Vegas in 2026 describing the decision as a “kick in the guts” for the club and rugby league in Victoria. The Storm were one of the frontrunners to participate in this year’s season-opening excursion to America but withdrew their application last June so they could focus their preparations closer to home. They were again one of the favourites to be involved in 2026, but they’ve missed out with the Bulldogs, Dragons, Cowboys and Knights chosen to compete, with a Super League clash to round out the triple treat of action which won’t feature a women’s match this time around. The Storm are one of the most successful sporting clubs in the country and have attracted a couple of sellout crowds at home already this season, with the competition heavyweights coming off a thumping 64-0 win over the Wests Tigers. The Vegas trip is a chance to grow the game on the global stage, and Ponissi and the club are disappointed the Storm haven’t been given the chance to do it in what will be the third year of taking games to Allegiant Stadium. “I can’t sugar-coat it, it was a kick in the guts for the club and the game down here in Victoria,” Ponissi said on SEN. “Given the profile of the game and the media surrounding it and the way it’s started, it would have been fantastic (to be heading over there). “To miss out again is disappointing for the club and the game in Victoria. “We’ve just got to ******** our pride and not feel sorry for ourselves because we’ve got more important things to worry about this year. 18. UnitedHealth under criminal probe for possible Medicare fraud, WSJ reports UnitedHealth under criminal probe for possible Medicare fraud, WSJ reports (Reuters) -The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is carrying out a criminal investigation into UnitedHealth Group for possible Medicare fraud, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The company’s stock slipped 8% in after-hours trade following the report, which follows a series of problems at the insurer. On Tuesday, UnitedHealth Group’s CEO, Andrew Witty, stepped down unexpectedly, and the company simultaneously suspended its 2025 financial forecast due to rising medical costs. The announcement sent shares plunging nearly 18% to a four-year low. While the exact nature of the criminal allegations is unclear, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter, the probe by the healthcare-fraud unit of the DOJ’s criminal division has been active since at least last summer. In February, the Journal reported a civil fraud investigation into UnitedHealth’s Medicare practices. The company had then said that it was unaware of any new probe. In the same month, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley launched an inquiry into UnitedHealth’s Medicare billing practices, requesting detailed records of their compliance programme and other related documents. A DOJ spokesperson declined to comment to the Journal about the fresh criminal probe. The UnitedHealth Group and the DOJ did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comments. The new investigation follows a broader scrutiny into the Medicare Advantage program. The DOJ, earlier this month, had filed a lawsuit accusing three of the largest U.S. health insurers of paying hundreds of millions of dollars in kickbacks to brokers in exchange for steering patients into the insurers’ Medicare Advantage plans. Nearly half of the 65 million people covered by Medicare, the U.S. programme for people aged 65 and older or with disabilities, are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans run by private insurers. The insurers are paid a set rate for each patient, but can be paid more if patients have multiple health conditions. Standard Medicare coverage is managed by the government. The ONS said first-quarter growth “was driven by an increase of 0.7% in the services sector, production also grew, by 1.1%, while the construction sector showed no growth.” Deutsche Bank Economist Sanjay ***** said this week that any first quarter jump is likely to be short-lived. “By all accounts, a surprisingly stronger end to 2024 combined with some strength in domestic spending and front-running of trade ahead of Liberation Day, will have led to a ******* jump to start the year,” he said in a research note. Deutsche Bank believes “risks are skewed higher,” however. “The bump higher in activity will likely be short lived, however. 21. Amid Blockade, Trump and Israel Mull Divisive Aid Plan For Gaza Amid Blockade, Trump and Israel Mull Divisive Aid Plan For Gaza The Trump administration is working with the Israeli government on a plan to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and end Israel’s two-month blockade on food and fuel deliveries, according to the State Department. Aid workers have raised serious doubts about the approach. The mechanism has yet to be finalized, but the general idea is to establish a handful of distribution zones that would each serve food to several hundred thousand Palestinians, according to two Israeli officials and a U.N. diplomat. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the proposal, and The New York Times also reviewed briefing papers that detail the proposal and confirmed their authenticity with diplomats and officials. The Israeli military would be stationed beyond the sites’ perimeters, allowing aid workers to distribute the food without the direct involvement of the soldiers, the officials and the briefing papers said. The plan marks the first time that the Trump administration has been drawn into such detailed discussions about aid delivery in the Gaza Strip. Mr. Trump is considering announcing the plan in the coming days, before a trip to the Middle East, an Israeli and a U.S. official said. Israel and the United States say a new system is needed to prevent ****** from stealing food supplies and profiting from them. By severing ******’s influence over aid, they hope to undermine the group’s wider influence over the ************ population, perhaps weakening its grip on power. But the plan’s feasibility remains unclear. While any resumption of food deliveries would help address rising hunger in Gaza, the project has been criticized by aid agencies. The United Nations said it had too many reservations to participate. In a briefing paper distributed to partners including U.N. member states and other aid agencies this week, the U.N. office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs said the proposal would force vulnerable civilians to walk longer distances to get to the few distribution hubs, making it harder to get food to those who need it most. Under the current system, the U.N. said, there are 400 distribution points. The new one, it said, “drastically reduces this operational reach, raising the prospects that large segments of the population would be left without food and other essential supplies.” At a media briefing on Friday, Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, said the criticism was “not accurate,” adding that “there will not be that long a distance to get to the distribution points.” The ambassador also said more distribution points would be built in the future, making it easier for civilians to access them. The Israeli prime minister’s office and the White House declined to comment. It is still unclear which aid groups will take part. Mr. Huckabee said several private organizations would be involved. At a media briefing on Thursday, Tammy Bruce, a State Department spokeswoman, said the aid would be distributed by a single private foundation, but declined to elaborate further. According to two Israeli officials and a person involved in the initiative, that foundation is the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a new private group founded for this purpose. A briefing paper issued in the name of the group and seen by The Times said it would provide a “functioning humanitarian lifeline in Gaza that mitigates suffering, upholds international humanitarian law, and demonstrates a scalable model for aid delivery in complex environments.” But the U.N. and others expressed concern at that the plan would force civilians to regularly interact with Israeli soldiers, putting them at greater risk of detention and interrogation. And the U.N. briefing paper said that the project could be a backhanded means of forcibly displacing civilians in northern Gaza; citing Israeli officials, the U.N. said the aid sites would likely be built in southern Gaza, forcing civilians to abandon the north to gain access to food. Aid workers also warned that the new system may make civilians who live far from the distribution points more vulnerable to looters and thieves, since they will be forced to walk long distances with valuable food parcels. The proposal does “not look like a plan for aid distribution so much as a tool for further pressure, to ensure that life is unlivable in Gaza,” said Tania Hary, executive director of Gisha, an Israeli rights organization that advocates for ************ civilians in Gaza. Mr. Huckabee acknowledged the new system would face challenges, at least initially, but said it was better to try a new system than to allow ****** to influence aid distribution. “Let’s be real clear what the danger is,” Mr. Huckabee said. “The danger is not doing anything.” Absent an end to the blockade, the risk of famine is expected to grow. The fuel embargo has made it almost impossible to distribute food to certain parts of Gaza, or to power bakeries, forcing many to close. As a result, hunger has already spiraled and food costs have soared. In late April, the World Food Program said its food supplies had run out, while the U.N. agency that aids ************ refugees, UNRWA, said it had no more flour. Israel says there are enough supplies in Gaza and that it is necessary to freeze aid to prevent it from reaching ******. According to civilians interviewed by The Times, the cost of flour has risen 60-fold since late February, Looting has become rife as civilians become more desperate. Isabel Kershner, Adam Rasgon and Johnatan Reiss contributed reporting. Source link #Blockade #Trump #Israel #Mull #Divisive #Aid #Plan #Gaza Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  24. Hynes embraces Origin silence as boost for Sharks Hynes embraces Origin silence as boost for Sharks Nicho Hynes has admitted he is happy not to be in the State of Origin selection conversation. Not because he doesn’t want to play for NSW, but because he can finally power through the middle of an NRL season without distraction. The Blues’ halfback for Origin I last year, Hynes has not been mentioned in recent debates as Mitch Moses and Jarome Luai battle to partner Nathan Cleary. “I love it,” Hynes said. “It’s just so good not to be spoken about being in contention. “It’s a bittersweet pill because you want to be spoken about … but that’s been too much of a focus for me over the last two years here.” Hynes rates his form this season as a “six-out-of-10”, where 10 is impossible perfection. But his situation reflects that of Cronulla, with the fifth-placed Sharks a genuine chance to have no Origin representatives. “I’m not worrying about external stuff. I’m not worrying about my (representative) goals,” Hynes said. “I couldn’t care less if I didn’t go anywhere near Origin this year. All I want is for the Sharks to be in contention to win a premiership. “The rest will come at a later date. “I don’t want people to think that I’m s***ting on playing for NSW, I would love to, but right now I just don’t care. “All I care about is the (game against the) Melbourne Storm (on Saturday) – or more to the point, training this week and being the best version of myself for the Sharks.” This week’s clash holds extra significance for Hynes, with Cronulla marking it as ‘mental fitness round’. Hynes has become a go-to person for mental health awareness, having repeatedly spoken about his own journey. It is a role that now comes naturally to him. “Without giving myself a rap, I just have a high care factor,” Hynes said. “I really care about things and people in my life. When I went through some struggles, I would’ve loved to have had someone like me in my corner. “I still had a couple of people, but I was too scared to speak about it. “Nine people die every single day from mental health (issues) or suicide (in Australia). Those numbers are just too much. “If I can use my platform and my profile to drive and advocate for speaking your struggles, then why not? “I don’t think I’d be doing people justice if I didn’t.” Hynes says handling the pressure of big moments in football should not be conflated with real-life mental health issues. “If you don’t have your mental space in a good capacity off the field then you won’t be able to perform on the field … You’re not superman,” Hynes said. “But game pressure and life pressure are completely different. “I was in Bali riding a scooter home after getting dinner at midnight and there was a young kid who was asking us for money, she was about 10 years old. “That’s real-life pressure. They don’t even know when they’re going to eat next. “Game pressure and life pressure are so different. 25. Call for pensions reform to help ageing population Call for pensions reform to help ageing population A business consultant has urged the Jersey government to introduce statutory workplace pensions to help improve quality of life for an ageing population. Kevin Keen said the government should introduce measures ensuring staff were automatically enrolled in work pensions unless they opted out. Jersey’s government was criticised last summer for shelving plans for auto-enrolment pensions. It comes ahead of a conference looking at how the island can address the challenges of people living longer. Under the leadership of Deputy Kristina Moore, the previous Council of Ministers had been developing policies to force businesses to offer workplace pensions to their staff. However, the current social security minister, Deputy Lyndsay Feltham, changed course, saying her priority was to “support employers and workers in the transition to a living wage”. Speaking in August last year, she said: “Planning for retirement and planning for pensions into the future is a very good thing. “We know that not all employers are currently offering pension schemes, and I would encourage employers to do that. “But I think it’s a very difficult thing for me… to have said to people that they need to put money aside for the future when they can’t afford to put bread on the table now.” The minister said work to introduce a workplace pension scheme had been paused and her hope was it would restart within the next 12 months. ‘Get a move on’ Mr Keen said auto-enrolment schemes, used by other countries, should be implemented in Jersey. He said: “Guernsey have got that, Australia have had it since 1992, the *** had it since 2012. Jersey is sitting on its hands for some reason… they really should get a move on and get that started. “The earlier you start saving for your retirement the more chance you’ve got of, what’s called, compounding – helping build your savings.” Jersey’s first conference to consider how the island needs to adapt to the population getting older takes place later in May. Joe Dickinson, the co-founder of Island of Longevity, said an ageing population was an important issue [BBC] The Island of Longevity conference has been organised by a group which feels islanders need to work with government to “reimagine ageing” and shape a future “where living beyond 100 becomes the norm”. The island’s latest population report showed the number of people aged 75 and over was expected to increase by around 50% over the next 20-30 years. Co-founder Joe Dickinson said: “More and more people will start to live longer so how does that affect the way we live? Employment, education, health – all these issues need to be addressed.” The conference is on 21 May at Jersey’s Pomme D’or Hotel.
