Trump floats possible new F-55 warplane and F-22 upgrade
Trump floats possible new F-55 warplane and F-22 upgrade
By Andrew Mills, Nayera Abdallah, Tim Hepher and Mike Stone
DOHA (Reuters) -The United States is examining development of a twin-engined warplane to be known as the F-55, as well as an upgrade to its Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor called the F-22 Super, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday.
Trump was speaking at a meeting of business leaders including the heads of Boeing and GE Aerospace in Doha, a day after announcing a string of business deals including an order from Qatar for 160 Boeing commercial jets.
Trump referred to the F-55 both as an upgrade to the Lockheed F-35 and a new development in comments that appeared to echo talk by the U.S. arms giant of a “best value” alternative, after losing out to Boeing to replace the F-22 superfighter.
He also highlighted the role of the new air dominance platform called the F-47, recently awarded to Boeing, and said the United States was simultaneously looking at upgrading the stealth fighter that it is designed to replace, the F-22.
“We’re going to do an F-55 and – I think, if we get the right price, we have to get the right price – that’ll be two engines and a super upgrade on the F-35, and then we’re going to do the F-22,” Trump said.
“I think the most beautiful fighter jet in the world is the F-22 but we’re going to do an F-22 Super and it’ll be a very modern version of the F-22 fighter jet,” he said.
“We’re going to be going with it pretty quickly,” he added.
Trump last month awarded Boeing the contract for the F-47 – a replacement for the Lockheed F-22 stealth fighter featuring a crewed aircraft flanked by a cohort of drones and seen as America’s most advanced or sixth-generation fighter.
Lockheed Martin, which lost out to Boeing in that Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) competition and was dropped from a separate contest for a new U.S. Navy stealth jet, has said it is now looking at plans for a “fifth-generation-plus” fighter.
CEO James Taiclet told analysts last month that Lockheed was looking at ways of applying technology developed for its losing bid for the F-47 contract to the F-35, delivering 80% of the capability for half the cost.
“We’re basically going to take the chassis and turn it into a Ferrari,” he told analysts.
A Lockheed spokeswoman said “We thank President Trump for his support of the F-35 and F-22 and will continue to work closely with the Administration to realize its vision for air dominance.”
‘NEW AIRCRAFT’
Lockheed is separately in the midst of a delayed technology and software upgrade for the existing generation of F-35 strike fighter to boost cockpit displays and processing power.
Analysts said it was not immediately clear how Trump’s list of potential developments fitted into known programmes and spending plans, or the timing of existing programmes.
Agency Partners aerospace analyst Nick Cunningham said the F-55 may alternatively refer to the F/A-XX programme, intended to replace the U.S. Navy’s ageing Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet with the service’s own sixth-generation stealth fighter.
The Navy and Congress are battling with the administration to keep the plans moving forward, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Announcement of a winning bidder had been expected as early as March.
Funding of the radar-evading F-22, which is designed to combat other fighters, has been fiercely debated for years as Congress blocked plans by the Air Force to speed up retirements to focus on the next generation blueprint that became the F-47.
Any significant upgrade to the out-of-production F-22 would be costly, while Trump’s reference to two engines implies the F-55 would not be a straightforward derivative of the single-engined F-35 but imply an ambitious new platform, analysts said.
“Adding an engine to the F-35 makes it a new aircraft,” ***-based defence analyst Francis Tusa said.

U.S. stocks are rallying, but beware headwinds

There’s a lightness in the air on Wall Street. Stocks have been rising throughout the week. The S&P 500 has just ended its fourth straight session in the green, giving it a 4.54% bump so far over the past four days.
Tariffs are looking less thorny, for sure, as the U.S. negotiates agreements with other countries. But that’s not to say it’ll be a perfectly smooth path ahead.
For instance, despite its agreement with the U.S., China is still withholding rare earth metals, crucial for important industries such as defense and energy, from being exported to the U.S.
Similarly, even as India negotiates a deal with America, U.S. President Donald Trump appears to want more than just levies on U.S. imports cut. Trump told Apple CEO Tim Cook he doesn’t want the Cupertino-based company “building in India.” It’s hard to imagine India agreeing to keep Apple’s manufacturing out — or for The Big Apple to actually start producing Apple products.
U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell seemed cognizant of such complications and warned on Thursday that “supply shocks” could be “more frequent, and potentially more persistent” in the future.
The sense of buoyancy in markets, then, could be a head rush — evoked by the U.S.-China trade deal over the weekend — that could dissipate once the gravity of the economic headwinds takes over again.
What you need to know today
Powell warns of potential supply shocksU.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Thursday at a Fed conference that longer-term interest rates are likely to be higher, given that “inflation could be more volatile going forward” because of the possibility of “more frequent, and potentially more persistent, supply shocks” to the economy. Powell didn’t name Trump’s tariffs, but flagged risks around them at the Fed’s May meeting.
S&P clocks fourth day of winsOn Thursday, the S&P 500 gained 0.41%, its fourth positive session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.65% but the Nasdaq Composite underperformed, dropping 0.18%. Asia-Pacific markets were mixed Friday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 hovered around the flatline the country reported that its economy shrank 0.2% during the first quarter, steeper than the 0.1% expected in a Reuters poll of economists — and the first time it’s contracted in a year.
‘A little problem with Tim Cook’: TrumpWhile discussing on Thursday Washington’s trade relations with India, Trump said that he doesn’t want Apple CEO Tim Cook to build factories in India. “I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said. “I said to him, ‘my friend, I treated you very good. You’re coming here with $500 billion, but now I hear you’re building all over India.’ I don’t want you building in India.”
Rare earth exports from China still blockedChina has temporarily paused export restrictions targeting 28 American companies following the trade agreement reached by Beijing and the Trump administration over the weekend. But it is continuing to block exports of seven rare earth metals to the United States. Those metals are essential for the U.S.’ defense, energy and automotive industries.
Putin and Trump skip peace meetingRussia leader Vladimir Putin and his White House counterpart Trump opted to skip Ukraine-Russia peace talks in Turkey. Responding to the diplomatic slight as he arrived in Ankara on Thursday to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the delegation of lower-ranking officials that Russia had sent to Turkey showed Moscow wasn’t serious about talks.
[PRO] U.K.-U.S. deal to benefit European automakerBritish businesses are still hashing out exactly what the recently-unveiled U.K.-U.S. trade deal means for them. The European Union is yet to strike its own deal. Despite this, one automaker from the bloc’s biggest economy is about to see benefits due to its U.K. presence.
And finally…

Japan assets experienced record inflows in April as investors fled U.S. markets — and analysts expect the Asian country to stay attractive
Overseas investors bought 8.21 trillion yen ($56.6 billion) worth of Japanese equities and long-term bonds in April, according to government data. The net inflows were the largest for a calendar month since Japan’s finance ministry started collecting data in 1996, according to Morningstar.
Japanese assets are generally considered a haven, whose appeal rose as the “sell-U.S.” narrative gained ground in April, said Rashmi Garg, senior portfolio manager at Al Dhabi Capital.
Furthermore, Trump’s policy flip-flops could sustain interest in Japanese assets “even if it is not as a strong as the April level,” said Vasu Menon, OCBC’s managing director of the investment strategy team. Japan’s ongoing talks with the U.S. with regard to tariffs have also raised some optimism over cutting the 24% “reciprocal” tariffs on Japan, Menon said.

This Is Not the First Time Bungie Has Been Accused of Stealing Art in Its Game: Marathon Controversy Explained
This Is Not the First Time Bungie Has Been Accused of Stealing Art in Its Game: Marathon Controversy Explained
We’re back with another episode of ‘How Has Bungie Done This Again?’ as the studio behind titles like Destiny and Halo comes under fire once again. This time, Bungie allegedly used artwork without permission in its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, which is set to come out in September 2025.
Visual artist ANTIREAL has accused the developer of using her 2017 designs in the game’s alpha build without credit, pay, or approval. The craziest part about all this is that it isn’t even the first time the studio has been accused of doing something like this. So what is this fourth time’s the charm business?
Bungie has been accused of copying visual content again
The artist behind the accusation, known online as ANTIREAL, posted a series of messages on social media on May 15. She alleged that several visual assets from her work in 2017 appear throughout Marathon’s in-game environments. She claims there was no communication, consultation, or attempt to hire or credit her.
the Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs i made in 2017.@Bungie @josephacross pic.twitter.com/0Csbo48Jgb
— N² (@4nt1r34l) May 15, 2025
Which is weird if we look at the fact that some members of the dev team even follow her account. The artist provided side-by-side comparisons of her designs and in-game screenshots showing nearly identical elements, such as stylized logos, text layouts, and symbols. Her statements are as follows:
Bungie is of course not obligated to hire me when making a game that draws overwhelmingly from the same design language I have refined for the last decade, but clearly my work was good enough to pillage for ideas and plaster all over their game without pay or attribution.
And she didn’t even stop there. “In 10 years, I have never made a consistent income from this work.” She continued, “I am tired of designers from huge companies mood-boarding and parasitising my designs while I struggle to make a living.”
Bungie’s response was swift, albeit familiar. In a statement from the official @MarathonDevTeam account, the company confirmed that a “former Bungie artist” had included Antireal’s designs in a texture sheet used in the alpha build. Bungie claimed the current team was unaware of the issue, stating, “We take matters like this very seriously… and are committed to doing right by the artist.”
It’s not even the first time this has happened
Maybe the studio just has a flair for drama. | Image Credit: Bungie
Weirdly enough, this isn’t even Bungie’s first rodeo with a case like this. In 2023, the company admitted to using fan art in a Destiny 2 cutscene without proper credit. Another artist, Tofu_Rabbit, discovered their 2015 design had been used in a Destiny 2 weapon skin, leading the studio to issue an apology and compensation. In 2021, fan art of the character Xivu Arath was mistakenly used in a trailer for the Witch Queen expansion.
In each of these situations, the studio only acknowledged it after it was brought up by fans, or the artists themself. And it really isn’t something that can be pinned on one person. “This isn’t an oopsie you can blame on a former employee, your current employees follow this small artist,” said a commenter on X.
Bungie has promised stricter internal checks to avoid similar incidents in the future, including detailed documentation of all artist contributions and a more thorough audit of art assets. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s all words for show or if it actually makes a difference. If it doesn’t, then we’ll be the first to know when it happens again.

Cartier owner Richemont on Friday posted better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter sales, as the wealthiest spenders continued to shrug off global macroeconomic uncertainty.
Revenues at the Swiss luxury group rose 7% year-on-year at constant exchange rates to 5.17 billion euros ($5.79 billion) in the three months to the end of March, above the 4.98 billion euros forecast by analysts in an LSEG poll.
Full-year sales rose 4% to 21.4 billion euros, up on the previous year and just ahead of analyst expectations of 21.34 billion euros.
Sales rose annually across all regions, except Asia Pacific (ex. Japan) — the company’s largest market — where declines were led by a 23% drop in China. Japan led annual sales growth, up 25% at actual exchange rates, buoyed by “strong domestic and tourist spend” and a weak Japanese Yen.
Richemont had previously reported its “highest ever” quarterly sales figure in January at 6.2 billion euros, even as China demand weighed.
The earnings had, at the time, been taken as a signal of a wider turnaround in the beleaguered luxury sector. However, the specter of U.S. trade tariffs and subsequent macroeconomic uncertainty have threatened to once again hit consumer confidence and discretionary spending globally.
This is a developing story, please check back for updates.

Taiwan president rallies the troops ahead of possible ******** drills
Taiwan president rallies the troops ahead of possible ******** drills
By Ben Blanchard
KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan (Reuters) – Taiwan President Lai Ching-te offered his support and encouragement to the armed forces on Friday ahead of what the government has warned could be a new round of ******** military exercises near the island from as early as next week.
Taiwan cannot rule out that China will hold more military drills to “stir up trouble” around Tuesday’s one-year anniversary of Lai taking office, a senior government spokesperson said on Thursday in Taipei.
China calls Lai a “separatist” and has rebuffed his multiple offers for talks. Lai rejects China’s sovereignty claims over the democratic and entirely separately governed island, saying only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.
Lai visited army engineers and anti-submarine helicopter crews at bases in the southern city of Kaohsiung to thank them for their efforts before the traditional Dragon Boat festival at the end of the month.
Both the army engineers and the navy’s anti-submarine aviation command are the “cornerstones of the nation’s armed forces’ military strength, and also indispensable to the overall national defence strategy”, he told a group of helicopter crew at a lunch at Kaohsiung’s Zuoying navy base.
“It is only because of your hard work and dedication that the military continues to thrive and the nation’s people can live and work in peace and happiness,” he added. “Let’s work together to protect national security.”
Lai, who made no direct mention of China or potential for more drills, was accompanied by Defence Minister Wellington Koo and National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu, two of his most senior defence officials.
China’s Defence Ministry and Taiwan Affairs Office said this week that Lai was a “Taiwan Strait crisis maker” who had increased antagonism and confrontation and undermined peace and stability.
Last month, China held war games code-named “Strait Thunder-2025A” around Taiwan, the “A” at its end suggesting there could be more to come.
China called its May 2024 drills “Joint Sword – 2024A”, held shortly after Lai took office, and in October of that year staged “Joint Sword – 2024B”.

TikTok turns to meditation as it battles lawsuits and criticism
TikTok turns to meditation as it battles lawsuits and criticism

Plagued with allegations and lawsuits of harming users’ mental health, especially that of children, social media sensation TikTok has decided to turn to meditation — or, rather, guide its users to the calming effects of deep breathing.
TikTok said Thursday that it was launching in-app guided meditation exercises and other well-being features aimed at young users.
The company, owned by ******** tech giant ByteDance, said it began testing the new meditation exercises with select teens earlier this year and will now make them available to users of all ages.
TikTok said that the meditation feature, aimed at improving sleep quality, is triggered during “sleep hours” and will be turned on by default for users under the age of 18.
If these young users are on the app after 10 p.m., their “For You” feed will be interrupted by the guided meditation exercise. If a teen continues to use TikTok after the first reminder, the company will show a second full-screen meditation prompt.
The meditation app was teased earlier this week along with other features, such as new educational feeds, online safety tools and enhanced parental controls over screen time.
TikTok’s recent focus on promoting healthier digital habits for young users comes amid public pressure and a slew of lawsuits concerning the platform’s impact on young users.
A bipartisan group of more than a dozen state attorneys general last year filed lawsuits against TikTok related to the app’s effects on young users.
One such suit from Attorney General Brian Schwalb of the District of Columbia alleged that TikTok was intentionally addictive and psychologically damaging to kids, posing profound risks including depression, anxiety, sleep loss and body dysmorphia.
A TikTok spokesperson previously told CNBC that the lawsuit ignored proactive measures that the platform has voluntarily implemented to support community safety and well-being.
Social psychologists have also advocated banning the app, warning that TikTok and other social platforms can cause mental health issues for children, adolescents, and young adults.
The social media platform briefly went offline in the U.S. in January, after the Supreme Court upheld a law to ban it unless its ******** parent company ByteDance sold its stake in the app.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump used an executive order to keep the platform running, and again delayed the enforcement of that ban last month. Its long-term status remains undecided, with ByteDance’s new deadline to divest set for mid-June.
While Congress’s ban of TikTok has been focused on the app’s ******** ownership and data and privacy concerns, governments have also begun to target TikTok and other social media over their perceived ill effect on young users.
In November, Australia’s parliament passed a bill banning social media platforms from allowing users under 16 to access their services, threatening fines of up to AU$ $50 million (£22.2 million).
In the U.S., TikTok says that users must be at least 13 years old to create an account, though there is a separate under-13 TikTok experience that offers additional safeguards.
The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission filed a civil lawsuit against TikTok and ByteDance in August, accusing them of collecting personal information from children under the age of 13 and having insufficient policies and processes for identifying and deleting accounts created by children.
TikTok and ByteDance didn’t immediately respond to requests for comments.
On Thursday, TikTok said it was also making a $2.3 million donation in ad credits to 31 mental health organizations in 22 countries around the world as part of its “Mental Health Education Fund.”

********* jailed for 32 years over ambush shooting
********* jailed for 32 years over ambush shooting
A killer who gunned down a career criminal in an ambush has refused to stand for a judge as he was sentenced to 32 years’ jail time.
Jason Milhuisen, 39, remained seated and stared down Supreme Court Justice Jane Dixon on Friday as she sentenced him for the ******* of Daniel O’Shea.
A jury in December found Milhuisen guilty of killing Mr O’Shea, 41, at a South Yarra reserve in Melbourne’s inner southeast.
Witnesses heard gun shots ring out of Fawkner Park about 7.30pm on April 26, 2019, as Mr O’Shea was shot four times, three to his body and one to his head.
Milhuisen claimed he was not the shooter but the jury decided he was the one to fire the bullets, Justice Dixon said.
“This was a grave offence demonstrating a callous disregard for the precious value of human life,” she said in sentencing.
Justice Dixon noted Mr O’Shea had convictions for drug trafficking and was described by prosecutors as a “career criminal”.
She accepted Milhuisen did not have any personal grievances towards Mr O’Shea and the 39-year-old instead acted as a “gun-for-hire” at the behest of another person or group.
“I accept it had all the hallmarks of a planned hit,” Justice Dixon said.
The judge found the attack was brazen as it took place in a public place, although no community members were close at the time of the shooting.
It was also aggravating that Milhuisen discarded two guns in Fawkner Park as he fled the scene, Justice Dixon said.
The firearms were found the day after the ******* about 50m from Mr O’Shea’s body, including by a child doing an Easter egg hunt.
Justice Dixon accepted Milhuisen had experienced difficult conditions in custody and his continued isolation from his family would make his time in prison more difficult.
But she found he had no remorse for his crimes and his moral culpability was high as she sentenced him to 32 years behind bars.
He will be eligible for parole after 21 years, having already served just over four years of his 25-year non-parole *******.
Milhuisen refused to stand as the sentence was handed down and again when the judge left the bench, as is customary in the courtroom.
His barrister Peter Morrissey SC told reporters his client maintained his innocence and was planning to appeal his conviction.

STORY: :: A massive dark patch appears off the Rio de Janeiro coast near Barra da Tijuca Beach
:: May 15, 2025
:: Reuters drone shots show brownish water standing out against the ocean’s blue
:: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
:: A biologist told Reuters the dark patch is linked to urban growth
:: Mario Moscatelli, Biologist
“What is this stain associated with? Urban growth, whether ordered or disordered, doesn’t have universal sanitation throughout the region. In other words, the sewage flows down the rivers, into the lagoon and from the lagoon into the sea.”
“Today you can see that the color is greener. Why? Because it probably has cyanobacteria, which are a type of algae that multiply in very unhealthy conditions when you have a lot of sewage in the lagoons.”
The stain appeared on Wednesday (May 14) off the Barra da Tijuca Beach, in western Rio.
Reuters drone shots show the water as brownish, contrasting with the ocean’s blue.
“The sewage flows down the rivers, into the lagoon, and from the lagoon into the sea,” biologist Mario Moscatelli told Reuters.

Australia Post has issued a warning about fresh scam sweeping the nation
Australia Post has issued an urgent warning to customers as a fresh wave of scam messages and emails sweeps across the country.
Fraudulent messages impersonating Australia Post claim a parcel delivery was unsuccessful due to an invalid postcode, and requests the recipient to click a link to remedy the issue.
The link leads vulnerable customers to a page that appears similar to Australia Post’s website, and prompts them to provide personal details and information.

Credit: SuppliedCamera IconThe fraudulent messages claim a delivery failed due to an invalid postcode, luring recipients into clicking malicious links to hand over personal information. This personal information can then be used by fraudsters to steal credentials, sensitive information or to trick individuals into sending money, Australia Post said.
The warning comes as new research from Australia Post revealed that nine in 10 Australians have received a scam text or call, and nearly three-quarters report being targeted by scams mimicking parcel delivery services.
The victim got into contact with the ‘fake’ through a Facebook page she thought belonged to the actor.
The survey results from Australia Post also found that 58 per cent of respondents believed businesses were not doing enough to protect them and 85 per were more concerned about scams today than they were 12 months ago.
The ‘invalid postcode’ trick is the latest scam part of the ‘Darcula’ phishing-as-a-service operation.
The Darcula platform is described as a ‘cybercrime toolkit’, that allows scammers to spoof trusted brands to steal their customer’s data.
Available for purchase, the toolkit is particularly dangerous as it allows scammers to bypass telecommunications and network filters to send scams over iMessage and Rich Communication Services (RCS).
Australia Post is urging the public to stay vigilant and only trust official communications through the AusPost app.
“Scammers prey on busy lifestyles and the excitement and urgency in waiting for a package. The safest way to track your deliveries is directly through the official AusPost app,” Australia Post’s chief information security officer Adam Cartwright said.

If you’re expecting a parcel, don’t click on suspicious links or respond to unexpected messages – always check the app first.”
The survey findings also revealed that some Australians feel more equipped to deal with scam attempts than others.
Over a third of Gen Z respondents – 36 per cent – said they were “very confident” in identifying scams, compared to just 10 per cent of Australians aged 80 and over, aka the Silent Generation.
Older generations, like Boomers, are more likely to report being only “somewhat confident”.
Australia Post reminds customers that they will never call, text or email asking for personal or financial information including password, credit card details or account information, or to request payment.
They advised that the AusPost app provides a safe alternative, offering a secure place to receive delivery updates, track parcels along their journey, and redirect parcels to alternative addresses including parcel lockers.
The app also provides in-app notifications for missed deliveries and parcel collection.

If you’re looking to save some serious money, rain or shine, solar panels could be the way to go.
Perhaps you are unsure about solar panels if you don’t live in a blazing hot part of the country, but a homeowner in Ohio has made massive savings on their energy bills, even in a cool winter month.
Switching to solar power is one of the best ways to save money on home energy while also reducing the pollution created by non-green energy sources, including coal and oil. If you’re keen to make the change, EnergySage’s free tools are useful resources to find quick solar installation estimates and compare quotes.
According to Chagrin Valley Today, local homeowner Tom Jackson reduced his bills after installing 35 solar panels around his property in Solon.
“So far today, 78% of my electric use has been produced passively by the (solar panel) system — not bad for February in Northeast Ohio,” he said.
He also busted the myth that solar panels are only effective in the height of summer by explaining that the only time the panels didn’t generate electricity was when it was completely dark. Even though cloud coverage lessens the amount of electricity generated, the impact is not as drastic as you might believe.
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
Alongside the benefits of reducing carbon pollution that comes from using dirty fuels, a switch to renewable energy is also great for people’s wallets. The costs of renewable energy have steeply declined, and more sources result in lower energy costs for individuals. An energy-efficient home is a great way to make a tangible impact on your carbon footprint while saving money.
By using EnergySage, you can find the best deal for solar panels, which will lower your long-term energy costs. According to its website, the average person can receive nearly $10,000 in incentives for a solar purchase and installation.
“I’m able to produce about 115% of my average electric power needs,” Jackson added, saying he wouldn’t have to pay any energy bills over the summer.
He also told Chagrin Valley Today that any surplus energy he created could be sold through a national energy sharing program. “It’s possible that I could get checks for $30 or $60 from sources that used the power I produced,” he said. “… Passive income is always welcome.”

Dovish BOJ policymaker urges pause in rate hikes on US tariff uncertainty
Dovish BOJ policymaker urges pause in rate hikes on US tariff uncertainty
By Leika Kihara and Chang-Ran Kim
TOKYO (Reuters) -The Bank of Japan must hold off raising interest rates for the time being, its board member Toyoaki Nakamura said on Friday, warning of growing downward pressure on the economy from higher U.S. tariffs.
Nakamura, known as the most dovish member of the board, said the central bank must guide monetary policy “cautiously” with due attention to how extremely high uncertainty over U.S. trade policy could affect corporate and household activity.
“Japan’s economy is facing mounting downward pressure,” as steep U.S. tariffs, including on its mainstay automobile sector, could seriously hurt corporate profits, Nakamura said in a speech.
“Rushing to raise interest rates when growth is slowing could curb consumption and investment with a lag,” said Nakamura, a former corporate executive whose five-year term at the board expires at the end of June.
Japan’s economy shrank for the first time in a year and at a faster pace than expected, data for the March quarter showed on Friday, underscoring the fragile nature of its recovery now under threat from U.S. President Donald Trump‘s trade policies.
While capital expenditure remains firm, uncertainty over the U.S. tariff policy is already prodding Japanese firms to put off spending plans or take a wait-and-see approach, Nakamura said.
The U.S. tariffs could also trigger a “vicious cycle of lower demand and prices,” which requires the BOJ to tread carefully in future rate hikes, he added.
The U.S. imposed 10% tariffs on all countries except Canada, Mexico and China, along with higher tariff rates for many big trading partners, including Japan, which faces a 24% tariff rate starting in July unless it can negotiate a deal with Washington.
The U.S. has also imposed 25% levies on cars, steel and aluminium, dealing a huge blow to Japan’s economy that relies heavily on automobile exports to the United States.
The global trade war touched off by U.S. tariffs has also complicated the BOJ’s decision on when and how far it can push up interest rates.
Fears of a Trump-induced global slowdown forced the BOJ to sharply cut its growth forecasts at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting, and cast doubt on its view that sustained wage hikes will underpin consumption and the broader economy.
Most economists now expect the BOJ will hold interest rates steady through September to assess the effects of U.S. tariffs, a Reuters survey showed, although a slight majority still see at least a 25-basis-point hike by year-end.

Proposal to build shopping centre with supermarket and tenancy stores in Denmark open for comment
Proposal to build shopping centre with supermarket and tenancy stores in Denmark open for comment
A plan to build a shopping centre with a supermarket and seven speciality shops in the Shire of Denmark has opened for public comment.
Earmarked for the empty site at 82-90 South Coast Highway, opposite the visitor centre, the centre building would span 3058sqm and offer a 130-bay carpark.
It would create an additional 62 full-time jobs.
The development application, put forward by Dunsborough-based firm LB Planning, is a redo of the proposal approved by Great Southern Joint Development Assessment Panel in 2014 and the shire in 2017, after the original approval lapsed in 2019.
The commercially zoned lot is bounded by Hardy Street and the Amaroo Retirement Village.
The town is serviced by the IGA Fine Food Market and smaller IGA Local Grocer, though many residents travel to Albany for the wider variety of supermarkets.
The application report states that the centre would economically benefit other retailers in Denmark Town Centre.
“It will reduce/retain up to 155 person trips per day (57,000 person trips p.a.) to Albany which will instead now shop in the Denmark Town Centre, creating greater vibrancy and vitality for the Denmark Town Centre,” it reads.
“It represents an economic and social gain to the Denmark community by providing greater choice and convenient access to a wider range of goods and services that some residents currently consider necessary to travel to Albany to access.“
Comments can be made on the My Feedback tab of the shire website, emailing *****@*****.tld or sending a letter to PO Box 183, Denmark WA 6333.
Public comment is open until 5pm on June 6.

The ex porn star who shot up Trump’s hotel and made wild Diddy claims breaks silence
The ex porn star who shot up Trump’s hotel and made wild Diddy claims breaks silence
His tales weren’t so tall, after all.
Jonathan Oddi, who made some wild allegations after being arrested in May 2018 for storming the Trump National Doral hotel and engaging in a shootout with cops, had his day in court Wednesday, even though he wasn’t there.
The former porn star’s name was brought up during the NYC sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs. A picture of him was shown to the rapper’s ex girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who identified him during her testimony, The New York Post reports.
Ventura testified that Oddi was one of the dozen or so male escorts Combs allegedly hired for ******* encounters, including “freak-offs,” aka baby oil-fueled *******.
That’s what Oddi revealed after his 2018 arrest during an interrogation with law enforcement officers, who reportedly did not investigate the claims.
“He would masturbate and tell me what to do to Cassie,” said the South Africa native seven years ago. “I was like a sex slave, OK? For them, that’s what I was.”
Jonathan Oddi
In a new interview with News Nation, Oddi — who is still incarcerated in Miami — revealed more sordid details about the liaisons with Combs and Ventura.
“It was like $800 each time,” Oddi claimed of his payment. “Sometimes he’d call me twice. Even three hours later, he’d call me to come back.”
The 49-year-old recounted that Combs would often request Oddi wear a police officer costume and that the atmosphere included dim lights and candles.
Oddi said he feels badly for Ventura, whom he called “a decent person,” and admitted he had a feeling something was amiss back then.
The R&B singer, who is expecting baby No. 3 with husband Alex Fine, testified she settled with Diddy for $20 million after suing him for years of abuse. Prosecutors played the now infamous surveillance video of Combs kicking her in a hotel hallway in Los Angeles in 2016.
Oddi also claimed to News Nation that he settled with Combs two years before the L.A. incident. As part of the $5 million deal, the ex stripper said he had to turn over videos of their X-rated sessions.
“Now I understand what was going on in her life and what was happening,” he said. “And him beating her up in the hotel shows me the type of individual he is and confirmed that everything happened to me was true and correct and in line with his personality.”
Oddi remains in custody in Miami-Dade County awaiting trial on attempted ******* of law enforcement officers, armed burglary and armed grand theft charges over the showdown at the Trump hotel.
He told News Nation that he “may” have been experiencing a bipolar episode the day of the bullet-riddled chaos, but says he is on medication and “stable” now.
“I had no issues in jail,” he said, “I’m feel I’m ready to come out [and] be a productive member of society.”

Xiaomi XRING 01 Chipset Teased by CEO Lei Jun Ahead of Launch
Xiaomi XRING 01 Chipset Teased by CEO Lei Jun Ahead of Launch
Xiaomi XRING 01 will soon be launched as the company’s first in-house smartphone chipset. The new processor is expected to debut on a new handset later this month, according to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. It is tipped to be a high-performance chip, but is unlikely to outperform the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite or the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 mobile platforms. Xiaomi’s in-house processor could help reduce its reliance on chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek, while helping its electric vehicle (EV) business.
Xiaomi XRING 01 Launch Timeline
According to a post by Xiaomi’s CEO on Weibo, the ******** microblogging website, the Xiaomi XRING 01 will be released in “late May”. The executive also said that Xiaomi’s chipset is independently designed and developed by the company. The post does not include any other details about the smartphone procesor.
Meanwhile, Weibo user Digital Chat Station (translated from ********) claims that Xiaomi’s XRING 01 chip will be built “within 5nm”. The tipster also says that Xiaomi’s efforts to build chips over the past decade will finally let it join the only other handset makers that build their own processors — Apple, Google, Huawei, and Samsung.
Last month, another tipster leaked details of Xiaomi’s in-house chipset, claiming that it would feature a 1+3+4 CPU layout. The chip was said to comprise one Cortex-X925 core (3.2GHz), three Cortex-A725 cores (2.6GHz), and four Cortex-A520 cores (2.0GHz). It is also expected to feature an IMG DXT-72 GPU from Imagination technologies.
The leaker also claimed that the chip would be built using TSMC’s N4P process technology, which would be more affordable for Xiaomi than using TSMC’s latest N3E node which is currently used to build flagship mobile chips.
There’s no word from the company on which phones will be the first to feature the new Xiaomi XRING 01 chip. However, we can expect more details about this process to be unveiled in the coming days, based on the launch timeline revealed by Xiaomi.
