  5. South Koreans eye constitutional change to president’s power after martial law South Koreans eye constitutional change to president’s power after martial law By Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea’s political crisis has ignited bipartisan calls for constitutional amendments to reshape the power of the president, an issue hotly debated ahead of the June 3 snap election. The election was called after former President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached and removed from office over his shock martial law decree in December, and contenders from the major parties have vowed to pursue constitutional reforms. “Chances to succeed in a constitutional amendment are higher than ever,” said Chae Jin-won, a professor at Kyunghee University’s Institute of Public Governance. The constitution was last revised in 1987 to introduce direct presidential elections and a single, five-year term. Changes have long been debated but never implemented. Frontrunner Lee Jae-myung, of the liberal Democratic Party, has proposed four years in office and two consecutive terms for presidents who would take office from 2030 and onwards, a run-off system for presidential elections and parliamentary nomination on the prime minister. “The responsibility of the president should be strengthened and powers should be decentralised,” he said on May 18. Kim Moon-soo, presidential nominee from the conservative People Power Party, has also unveiled a reform proposal including a four-year, two-term presidential system for future presidents. He promised to cut his own term down to three years if he is elected as the next leader so presidential and general elections could happen in the same year from 2028. He also pledged to strike down presidential immunity. Yoon was a member of the PPP until he resigned from the party on May 17. In recent years, presidential candidates from across the political spectrum have supported revisions including giving presidents two four-year terms, but there have been few concrete steps after new leaders were chosen. A Gallup Korea opinion survey last month found 67% of respondents supported revising the constitution to fix the presidential system, with 21% saying it is unnecessary. In April, Lee rejected a proposal by Woo Won-shik, the speaker of the parliament, to hold a referendum on constitutional reform on the June 3 presidential election day. At the time Lee said ending the political turmoil was the top priority. The next president should begin to gather public consensus based on election pledges for the constitutional amendment and move forward with bipartisan support, he told reporters on Sunday. Kim and his party criticised Lee for not pledging to reduce the term for the next presidency, but Lee said stable governance and economic recovery would be more important for the next leader than spending much of the term only on the constitutional revision. Professor Chae said while Lee and Kim shared similar goals, the two contenders were driven by differing motivations. “I think candidate Kim put forward the idea of a transitional government to revise the constitution as a way to apologise for the martial law,” he said. “Candidate Lee initially didn’t want to jump to it, not to divert attention toward him, but now he is saying it to bring in more moderate voters.” (Reporting by Ju-min Park; Editing by Josh Smith and Saad Sayeed) Source link #South #Koreans #eye #constitutional #change #presidents #power #martial #law Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. AEC confirms partial recount in Goldstein after teal’s request AEC confirms partial recount in Goldstein after teal’s request The *********** Election Commission (AEC) will carry out a partial recount in the Melbourne seat of Goldstein after a request from independent Zoe Daniel. The AEC over the weekend declared Liberal moderate Tim Wilson the winner by 260 votes. But Ms Daniel, who unseated Mr Wilson in 2022, said a recount was needed because of the “very tight margin and several errors”. The AEC on Monday confirmed it would comply. Camera IconIndependent Zoe Daniel has requested a recount in Goldstein because of the ‘very tight margin and several errors’. NewsWire / Nadir Kinani Credit: News Corp Australia “The direction to conduct a partial recount has been made on the basis of advice from the national election manager to the electoral commissioner that in order to ensure the greatest level of confidence in the final result and the utmost integrity in the counting process, there should be a re-examination of all first preference ballot papers for Tim Wilson and Zoe Daniel as well as all informal votes,” the AEC said in a statement. “The recount request submitted by independent candidate Zoe Daniel was carefully considered and was instructive but not determinative, and her request for a full recount has not been granted.” The AEC said the recount would start on Wednesday. Ms Daniel welcomed the recount, thanking her “scrutineers and AEC staff for their diligence and dedication to the democratic process”. “I will be making no further comment until the process is complete,” she said in a statement. Camera IconLiberal Tim Wilson has urged Ms Daniel to accept the result. 8. Trump says US will control US Steel as part of Nippon deal Trump says US will control US Steel as part of Nippon deal By Jeff Mason and Steve Holland MORRISTOWN, New Jersey (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States will have control over U.S. Steel as part of the company’s partnership with Japanese firm Nippon Steel. As part of the deal announced on Friday, Nippon Steel plans to invest $14 billion into U.S. Steel’s operations, including up to $4 billion in a new steel mill. Trump said on Friday the merger would create 70,000 jobs. Pressed for more details of the agreement, Trump said on Sunday: “It will be controlled by the United States, otherwise I wouldn’t make the deal.” Speaking to reporters as he left for Washington after a weekend at his New Jersey golf club, Trump said relevant lawmakers had pressed him to make the deal. FILE PHOTO: Nippon Steel logo is displayed at the company’s headquarters in Tokyo “It’s an investment and it’s a partial ownership, but it will be controlled by the USA,” he said. The merger would create the world’s third-largest steel producer by volume, following China’s Baowu Steel Group and Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal, according to World Steel Association data. While no details were released, investors have expressed confidence that terms will be similar to those agreed in 2023. Investors have said that eventually U.S. Steel will no longer be publicly traded and they will receive a cash payout for their shares. The deal has been one of the most highly anticipated on Wall Street after it morphed into the political arena with fears that foreign ownership would mean job losses in Pennsylvania, where U.S. Steel is headquartered. 10. Star unclear on return timeline after giant nerve issue Star unclear on return timeline after giant nerve issue GWS veteran Stephen Coniglio has revealed a nerve issue has been the cause of his indefinite stint on the sidelines. A glute issue originally thought to put Coniglio out for just one week has kept the star onballer missing from action since round three. It is a frustrating setback for the 31-year-old, who had been rediscovering his form after facial surgery and a shoulder reconstruction in the off-season. “It was our West Coast game (in round four) and I just woke up like any other morning, just preparing to come to captain’s run, and I just couldn’t walk,” Coniglio said on Monday. “I felt this pain shooting down my leg … I just pulled out of that game, disappointing, just thinking a couple of days it’ll settle. “As it’s gone on, it’s moved from my glute down my hamstring. “It’s been a bit of trial and error, but it’s a nerve issue that’s bothering me. “I tried a couple of injections that, again, hadn’t seemed to work initially. We’re trying a few other things at the moment.” Coniglio’s return has been pushed back to their round-14 fixture against Brisbane, but he admits the timeline isn’t certain. The time away from the game has at least given Coniglio more confidence in his shoulder and face, the inaugural Giant insisting he still has more to give. “I’m over 30 now, so everyone’s pointing to maybe it could be that, but I’m feeling 24, 25 again after having not played a lot for the last year,” he said. “Last year, dealing with the two operations gave me some really good mental perspective on how lucky I am and how grateful I am to play this game. “I’m very confident in my own ability and that I’ll be back playing my best very soon. I love the game so much.” Coniglio is joined on the sidelines by Finn Callaghan (shoulder), Brent Daniels (abdominal) and Josh Kelly (hip). But their thin midfield stocks haven’t got in the way of the Giants’ flag campaign, with coach Adam Kingsley’s men returning to the winners’ circle with a 28-point win over Carlton. It was milestone man Toby Greene, in his 250th game, who led the way in the midfield to help the Giants make amends for a lacklustre loss to Fremantle the previous week. GWS return home to host Richmond at Engie Stadium in the club’s Cultural Heritage Series fixture, a cultural festival in celebration of the diverse cultures of Western Sydney. “There’s no better place than here in Western Sydney to showcase that,” Coniglio said. “Yes, we’re trying to win games of football, but we’re also trying to build the club. “(We’re) not just trying to get players from a multicultural background, but engage with fans from a multicultural background.” Source link #Star #unclear #return #timeline #giant #nerve #issue Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  11. 7 Google Maps tips to use with Android Auto and CarPlay 7 Google Maps tips to use with Android Auto and CarPlay Google Maps, whether you’re using it on Android or iOS, is an app packed with features—from guides to what to see in your local area to the ability to share your location with friends and family in real time. It’s one of the most comprehensive apps out there, and Google is consistently adding new features. Google Maps is also fully compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so if you have one or both of those services installed on your vehicle’s dashboard, you’ll see the mapping app pop up when your Android phone or iPhone is connected. There are several useful features you can tap into in Google Maps on that second screen. Change the look of your vehicle Change your look of your car on the map. Screenshot: Google You don’t have to settle for the standard blue arrow that represents your vehicle on the map: Look up directions for your trip on your phone, and on the preview card (showing the estimated travel time), tap the icon showing three sliders on the right. Next, choose Driving avatar to pick a new icon and a new color for the map. Find somewhere to stop on the way Find well-placed stops along your route. Screenshot: Google If you want to stop for gas, groceries, or something else during your journey, you’re in luck: You can do this without losing the step-by-step navigation that’s already showing on screen. On the travel card on Android Auto (showing the estimated travel time), tap the magnifying glass icon, then run a search for the type of place you’re looking for. You’ll see some examples, like coffee shops and gas stations, which you can select with a tap. Google Maps shows you the best matches along your current route, together with how much time the detour will take—tap on any of the options to add it to your route. The step-by-step instructions are then updated to include the extra stop you’ve just added. It’s a little different if you’re using Google Maps through Apple CarPlay: You tap on the travel card, then tap Add stop at the top, which brings up a list of suggestions. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay let you type out or speak out a specific type of location you want to stop at. As always, be careful doing any of this while you’re moving. Switch up the perspective of the map There are multiple map views to choose between. Screenshot: Google On Android Auto, you’ll see a compass icon on the right. Tap this switch between three map views: a 3D perspective view, an overhead north up view, and a journey overview. On Apple CarPlay, you only get the 3D and north up views;you can get at them by tapping the travel card showing your journey time, then the gear icon. Help out other road users Use Google Maps to tell other road users what’s happening. Screenshot: Google Google Maps comes with a built-in feature for alerting other users about what’s happening on the road. If you’re using Google Maps in Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you can find it by tapping on the yellow hazard icon (the triangle) on the left or right of the interface. A new box pops up letting you report a range of incidents at your location. The options here vary slightly depending on where you are in the world, but they’ll typically include ******, Congestion, and Lane closure. If enough Google Maps users make the same report in the same place, then Google will update its traffic databases accordingly—so everyone sees the extra information you’ve added. Choose what’s shown on screen Different layers can be shown on the map. Screenshot: Google You’ve got options when it comes to what’s shown on the map. On your vehicle display, tap the gear icon (Android Auto), or the travel card and then the gear icon (Apple CarPlay), and you get options for showing current traffic conditions and a satellite view. On Android Auto, there’s also a 3D buildings view you can use instead of the satellite map. Share your journey with other people Use Google Maps to let other people know when you’re arriving. Screenshot: Google Whether you’re heading to a work conference or a family get-together, the people you’re meeting will appreciate knowing when you’ll actually arrive (and it saves you from having to keep stopping to send messages letting everyone know you’re going to be late). At the time of writing, this is only available in Google Maps on Android Auto, though. Tap the three dots on the travel card (showing your estimated journey time), then pick Share journey. A list of contacts pops up, but you can also search through the list by typing or talking. Your chosen contact can then see where you are as your journey progresses. Change the audio prompts you hear The same app audio alert options are available on the dashboard. Screenshot: Google You don’t necessarily want to have every step of a trip spoken out by Google Maps, especially if you’re trying to listen to a podcast, or you’re on a route you’re pretty familiar with. Tap the speaker icon on the dashboard to mute or unmute audio instructions; on Android Auto, you can also pick Alerts only (so just relevant road incidents). 13. Qantas bulks up New Zealand flights over peak summer holidays Qantas bulks up New Zealand flights over peak summer holidays Qantas will bulk up its trans-Tasman routes by an extra 60,000 seats over the peak summer holiday *******. The 20 per cent boost in capacity throughout December and January will see the Sydney-Christchurch and Melbourne-Auckland routes gain seven additional flights each per week, with Sydney-Auckland getting six more. The Sydney-Wellington route will get five extra flights a week; Melbourne-Christchurch and Brisbane-Queenstown another three each; and Melbourne-Queenstown two more. The Flying Kangaroo said the increase would see it operate more than 3.3 million seats across the Tasman between January 2025 and January 2026, supporting tourism growth in both NZ and Australia. Additionally, Qantas the same day announced it would soon introduce its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flights between Auckland Brisbane, bringing Premium Economy to the route and increasing premium seat choices for customers by up to 80 per cent. The 787 Dreamliner service will initially operate three times a week from August and increase to daily from October. This marked Qantas’ second 787 service between Australia and NZ, in addition to flights between Auckland and Sydney as part of the airline’s direct service to New York. Qantas international chief executive Cam Wallace said the increased capacity meant Qantas would have the most frequency between Australia and NZ in one of the busiest travel periods of the year. “This capacity boost represents almost 60,000 more seats compared to last summer, giving our customers additional choice and more convenience as well as supporting tourism and economic growth in both markets,” he said. Tourism New Zealand regional director Australia Andrew Waddel said the extra flights across all four major ports would mean even more options for travellers to kick start their Aotearoa getaway. “We know Australians are interested in exploring the country’s tranquil coastlines, world-class cycling trails and unique food and wine, and the longer days and warmer weather make it a fantastic time of year to experience it all and more,” he said. It comes just weeks after Qantas revealed it would launch direct flights from Perth to Johannesburg and Auckland from early December. The flights would operate three times a week on an Airbus A330, offering 224 economy and 27 business class seats. Trump asks ‘what the hell happened to Putin’ after Ukraine bombings Trump asks ‘what the hell happened to Putin’ after Ukraine bombings STORY: :: Trump says he’s ‘not happy’ with Putin after Russia bombs Ukraine over the weekend :: May 25, 2025 :: Morristown, New Jersey “Yeah, I’ll give you an update. I’m not happy with what Putin’s doing. He’s killing a lot of people. And I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin. I’ve known him a long time. Always gotten along with him. But he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all. Okay? We’re in the middle of talking, and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don’t like it all. Reporters asks, off camera: “Mr. President, what do you want to do about that?” “And I’m surprised. I’m very surprised. We’ll see what we’re going to do. What am I going to tell you? You’re the fake news, aren’t you? You’re totally fake. Any other questions? I don’t like what Putin is doing. Not even a little bit. He’s killing people. And something happened to this guy, and I don’t like it.” Trump spoke in reaction to a Russian barrage of 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities overnight on Sunday, including the capital Kyiv, in the largest aerial attack of the war so far, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more. Trump has been trying to get both sides to agree to a ceasefire in the three-year-old war in Ukraine and he spoke for more than two hours with Putin last week. He raised the possibility of imposing more sanctions on Russia in response to the ongoing attacks. “Always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all,” Trump said. 16. Adelaide United appoint Brazilian-born head coach Adelaide United appoint Brazilian-born head coach Brazilian-born Airton Andrioli, who is long renowned in youth soccer circles, has been appointed coach of Adelaide United’s A-League Men’s team. Andrioli, the man behind the Reds’ widely acclaimed youth program, has signed a two-year deal to replace Carl Veart. “I’m incredibly honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity,” Andrioli said in a statement on Monday. “This is a very special moment in my life and something I won’t take for granted. “My aim is to continue building on the strong foundations laid through our youth programs, providing young South Australians the opportunity to realise their dreams.” Andrioli’s promotion comes after being an assistant coach to Veart, and also the Reds’ head of youth football since 2020. Before that, he spent a decade as Football South Australia’s technical director and played a pivotal role in the state’s acclaimed talent pathways. Andrioli, who played for West Adelaide in the National Soccer League (NSL) between 1994 and 1996, also had a stint as assistant coach with the Young Socceroos in 2015/16. United’s technical director Ernest Faber said Andrioli was ideally suited to replace Veart, who split with the Reds after a five-year tenure. “Airton knows this club very well,” Faber said. “He’s the architect of our youth program, which is the lifeblood of Adelaide United and he’s already played a significant role in the progress we’ve made over the past few years. “He’ll continue the great work he’s been doing, but in a different capacity – backing young players, playing attacking football, and building a strong team culture. “We believe Airton will help us grow steadily while staying true to the identity of Adelaide United.” The Reds were tipped from this year’s finals with a 3-2 loss to Western United in an elimination final. 17. President Donald Trump says Russian leader Vladimir Putin ‘has gone absolutely CRAZY!’ President Donald Trump says Russian leader Vladimir Putin ‘has gone absolutely CRAZY!’ WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump made it clear he is losing patience with Vladimir Putin, leveling some of his sharpest criticism at the Russian leader as Moscow pounded Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles for a third straight night. “I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote in a social media post on Sunday night. Trump said Putin is “needlessly killing a lot of people,” pointing out that “missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.” The attack was the largest aerial assault since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022, according to Ukrainian officials. At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured. The U.S. president warned that if Putin wants to conquer all of Ukraine, it will “lead to the downfall of Russia!” But Trump expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well, saying that he is “doing his Country no favors by talking the way he does.” “Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop,” Trump wrote on social media. The president has increasingly voiced irritation at Putin and the inability to resolve the now three-year-old war, which Trump promised he would promptly end as he campaigned to return to the White House. He had long boasted of his friendly relationship with Putin and repeatedly stressed that Russia is more willing than Ukraine to reach a peace deal. But last month, Trump urged Putin to “STOP!” assaulting Ukraine after Russia launched another deadly barrage of attacks on Kyiv, and he has repeatedly expressed his frustration that the war in Ukraine is continuing. “I’m not happy with what Putin’s doing. He’s killing a lot of people. And I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin,” Trump told reporters earlier Sunday as he departed northern New Jersey, where he spent most of the weekend. “I’ve known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people and I don’t like it at all. ” A peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine remains elusive. Trump and Putin spoke on the phone this past week, and Trump announced after the call that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin ceasefire talks. That conversation occurred after Russian and Ukrainian officials met in Turkey for the first face-to-face talks since 2022. But on Thursday, the Kremlin said no direct talks were scheduled. The European Union has slapped new sanctions on Russia this month in response to Putin’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire. But while Trump has threatened to step up sanctions and tariffs on Russia, he hasn’t acted so far. 19. Our ratings *****, so we are changing them Our ratings *****, so we are changing them Dear CarExpert readers and friends, A few months ago, many of you sent us a link to this Reddit thread about our review ratings. You can go and have a read of it yourself, but the essence is that our rating system for reviewing cars sucked. The author, who supposedly has a background in data science, observed that most cars reviewed by CarExpert receive scores clustered narrowly between 7.8 and 8.4, regardless of their actual performance or quality, meaning that essentially our ratings were not very useful in helping you buy a new car. Given that our entire company mission is to help make buying the right new car quicker and easier, that was feedback we took seriously. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert There is no denying the facts around the data. Our ratings are indeed clustered in that spectrum because, ultimately, we are allowing each individual CarExpert reviewer to come up with his or her rating for the categories in which we had previously used. This was not by design, but simply because of the human element involved. Our previous rating system was a great idea in theory, but it is limited because one expert’s rating is not always identical to someone else’s. Plus, what really is the difference between 7.5 and 7.6 when it comes to ride and handling, especially from one author to another? So, in the spirit of transparency, we acknowledged internally that the current process was not working (in fact, it sucked) and we started work on our new rating system. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The reality is that no matter what we do, or how we do it, there will be individual bias from our writers around cars, and it is difficult to ask a person to judge a car on a numerical score and then have that score compared to another author judging another car. It will never be apples versus apples. As such, we have come up with two separate rating systems, both of which will evolve over time. The first iteration of our new ratings sees our human subjective rating remove any numerical reference. There is no longer a 7.4 or 8.5. We are now using simple words to convey the author’s overall thoughts on the car. The human rating will be on a scale of excellent, very good, good, average or below average. Simple and effective language to describe how our car experts feel about the vehicle, and probably a little bit more useful than ‘7.5’, which can mean average to some and amazing to others. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The second part of our new rating system is entirely data-driven. We are now going to take certain comparative rating categories using cold, hard data for each vehicle segment to give readers an idea of where the car they are interested in sits among its peers. Look at the data table below for an example of what our reviews will soon include. You will notice there are no numbers on this scale (yet). This is by design because we will first launch the ratings to give a visual indication of where the car sits among its category competitors before then looking to add a numerical score (or percentage) based on your feedback. You will notice that the blue bar can change size. That is due to the example listed, which takes in the full make/model range for our ratings (if there are different engines, variants etc). For individual make/model/variant reviews the blue bar will be far smaller and more representative of where the car actually sits. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert To better understand how this works, say we have a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD that consumes 4.8L/100km. That fuel efficiency number will now be put on a scale that shows the best option in the mid-size SUV segment at one end and the worst option in that category at the other end. Readers can see for themselves what the figures show across many other data points to decide what is important to them and what is not. Again, this is not a perfect rating system because many cars – even in the same category – are different and have different purposes, so it’s not a fair comparison. Another obvious potential issue is that we have to take the claimed data from automakers when it comes to things like fuel economy, towing capacity, ground clearance, etc. In our reviews, we will continue to always mention discrepancies between claimed fuel consumption figures and what our experts experience in the real world, but the data rating will use actual OEM-supplied data, which as we know isn’t always be 100 per cent accurate. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Some things to note here: all our previous reviews will have their numerical rating converted to a word rating. Some of this may cause some initial confusion or misunderstanding. We will fix that as we go. Also, as we launch this new rating system we’re seeking initial feedback for improvement. This improvement and iterative updates will take time. Please note that we do listen and we will get better, but please be realistic about the time it takes for iterative updates. With all that in mind, firstly a big thanks to our avid readers and Reddit users who sparked this change and, secondly, please use this article as a reference for collating all the feedback around our data ratings. And know that even if we don’t respond, we do read everything and take it on board. 20. Former surgeon general says negative impacts from loneliness comparable to smoking, obesity Former surgeon general says negative impacts from loneliness comparable to smoking, obesity Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, in a Sunday interview, warned about the adverse effects of chronic loneliness, which could lead to a shorter lifespan. Murthy, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” told host Kristen Welker that struggling with loneliness and isolation increases the risks of depression, anxiety and suicide, along with the risk of heart disease, stroke and dementia in older adults. “The overall mortality increase that can be related to social disconnection is comparable to the mortality impact of smoking and obesity,” he said. “That’s how powerful and how important loneliness is.” Welker noted that Murthy, in his 2020 book “Together,” found that chronic loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. “Well, it turns out that our connection with one another, this is not just a nice thing to have, it’s biologically an imperative for us,” he said. “It’s something we need for survival, just like we need food and water.” Murthy added that being deprived of social connection can put the human body into a stress state that can cause increased inflammation, which can then increase the risk for heart disease and other conditions that ultimately shorten people’s lives. He also said he was worried about the impact that technology is having on young people’s social connections. “We tend to think, ‘Oh. Kids are on social media. That’s great because they’re connected to one another.’ But, no, we have to recognize there’s a difference between the connections you have online and the connections you have in person,” Murthy said. “And as more relationships are shifted online, we’re realizing that, number one, more kids are struggling with this intense culture of self-comparison online, which is shredding their self-esteem. A lot of them are trying to be somebody that they’re not online. And they actually don’t have as many friendships in person as we all need. So you put this all together and what you see is escalating loneliness and isolation,” he added. Recently, a Gallup study found that young American men are lonelier than their counterparts in other nations. According to the study, 1 in 4 U.S. men under age 35 reported feeling lonely. Overall, 25 percent of men in the U.S. said they experienced bouts of loneliness the day before completing the survey. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 22. Anthony Albanese defends major gas project, says net-zero needs more than ‘warm thoughts’ Anthony Albanese defends major gas project, says net-zero needs more than ‘warm thoughts’ Anthony Albanese has defended the North West Shelf gas project, saying Australia’s renewable energy transition cannot happen with “warm thoughts” alone. Environment Minister Murray Watt is expected to make a call on the project this week after delays under his predecessor, Tanya Plibersek. Mr Watt has stressed he was still working through the details since taking on the portfolio. But the Prime Minister on Monday seemed to already know the answer. Camera IconPrime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended the North West Shelf project. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia “You can’t have renewables unless you have firming capacity, simple as that,” Mr Albanese told reporters in Canberra. “You don’t change a transition through warm thoughts, you do it through a concrete proposal, which is the expansion of renewables, up to 82 per cent of the grid. “But the way that occurs is it needs firming capacity to occur.” Extending the 41-year-old gas project is Senator Watt’s first big-ticket item in his new portfolio. It is one of the world’s largest liquid natural gas (LNG) and the biggest in Australia. Woodside Energy can operate the gas plant in Karratha until 2030 but wants to extend that until 2070. With the Western *********** government having already given the green light, the ball is in Senator Watt’s court. Camera IconEnvironment Minister Murray Watt has pledged to make a decision on the North West Shelf project by May 31. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia He has pledged to make a final call on it by the May 31 deadline. Mr Albanese insisted the extension would be “considered according to the environmental law” and said his government had a “concrete plan” to reach net-zero. “You cannot have a shift to renewables without having a confidence because you will lose community support if people walk into this room here and flick on the switch and the lights don’t go on,” he said. “We have a concrete real plan … and it is the one we took to an election in 2022. “It is the one we legislated after the election. It is the one we’re implementing. “You can go down that road or you can go down the road of 23 different plans, none of them implemented, which is what the former government had, or just pretending that you can have investment changes and a change in the energy mix overnight. “That can’t occur. If it did, that would be great. But what you need is a real plan with real solutions, that is what my government has.” Source link #Anthony #Albanese #defends #major #gas #project #netzero #warm #thoughts Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  23. Shares in China-listed Apple suppliers fall after Trump’s tariff threats Shares in China-listed Apple suppliers fall after Trump’s tariff threats SHANGHAI ((Reuters) -China-listed Apple supplier stocks lost ground on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on imported iPhones. Shares in Luxshare, which assembles iPhones and makes AirPods, fell 2.2% while ******** mobile screen maker Lens Tech lost 1.8%. Airpod maker Goertek declined 1.1%. Trump threatened on Friday to ratchet up his trade war again, warning Apple he may slap a 25% levy on any iPhones sold, but not made, in the U.S. as part of his administration’s goal of re-shoring jobs. His threat, along with a second that pushed for a 50% tariff on European Union goods starting June 1, has raised fears that the trade war that the U.S. is waging could intensify again after weeks of de-escalation. The White House paused most of the punishing tariffs Trump announced in early April against nearly every country in the world after investors furiously sold off U.S. assets including government bonds and the U.S. dollar. Trump left in place a 10% baseline tax on most imports, and later reduced his massive 145% tax on ******** goods to 30%. Apple is speeding up plans to make most iPhones sold in the United States at factories in India by the end of 2026 to navigate potentially higher tariffs in China. But the odds on moving production to the U.S. are slimmer. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CBS last month that the work of “millions and millions of human beings screwing in little, little screws to make iPhones” would come to the United States and be automated, creating jobs for skilled trade workers such as mechanics and electricians. But he later told CNBC that Cook told him that doing so requires technology not yet available.
