  1. REVEALED: AFL and AFLW National Academy squads for 2025 announced REVEALED: AFL and AFLW National Academy squads for 2025 announced Western Australia will be represented by four boys and six ****** in the AFL’s National Academy squads for 2025, announced on Monday. Cody Curtin (Claremont), the younger brother of Adelaide defender and former first-round pick Daniel, is among the 28 players selected for the coveted program ahead of their eligibility for next year’s draft. Wes Walley (Subiaco), Fred Rodriguez (South Fremantle) and Koby Evans (Perth) have also been hand-picked, an early indication the quartet is set to firm as promising draft prospects in 2025. This year’s academy graduates in Bo Allan (Peel Thunder) and Malakai Champion (Subiaco) are two of the state’s strongest chances, with the former a potential top-10 pick and the latter tied to West Coast as an NGA product. Kalani White, the son of former Melbourne and Fremantle ruck Jeff, is also included. He is a member of Gold Coast’s academy. WA will be more heavily represented in the AFLW academy with six players included in the 27-player squad. Evie Cowcher (Peel Thunder) looms as the state’s strongest prospect after being named WA’s MVP and selected in the All-*********** team in each of the past two seasons despite not being draft-eligible until next year. 2. The villagers up in arms over HS2’s £100m bat shed The villagers up in arms over HS2’s £100m bat shed It is a grey, misty morning in Twyford, Buckinghamshire, and the mood is as downcast as the weather. The village’s residents have endured more than a decade of disruption and delays due to the High Speed 2 project. A stretch of the railway is planned to run just north of the village, which has a population of about 550. They are used to tense community meetings and news of spiralling costs. However, last week brought a new low: news that the building of a giant “shed” nearby to protect rare bats from HS2 trains will cost taxpayers £100 million. “I think we’ve all gone batty,” says Joan Sinclair, 69, who runs the village pub. “Spending £100 million on a bat house… It’s a bats— bat house.” “It’s just a waste of money – but anything to do with HS2 is,” she mutters from behind the bar. She suggests that, at this point, the bats are getting a better deal than the residents themselves, some of whom will receive compensation from HS2 if the line reduces the value of their homes. An artist’s impression of the half-mile-long bat shed – HS2 The creature in question is the Bechstein’s bat, one of the ***’s rarest bat species, which thrives in a local patch of mature woodland that the HS2 route will bisect. Last week, Sir Jon Thompson, who took over as HS2 Ltd chairman last year, revealed that in order to protect the bat colony, the government-owned firm is building a just over half-mile-long “bat shed” along a stretch of the route in Sheephouse Wood, at the eye-watering cost of £100 million. Thompson, who was initially parachuted into the troubled project after leading HMRC, said the “bat mitigation project” was just one of 8,276 consents HS2 needed to secure to construct the first phase of the railway between London and Birmingham. The 33ft-high structure – which looks more like an airport terminal than a bat box from the artist’s impression – is designed to protect the bats from the 225mph trains. “All bats are legally protected in the *** and the structure will allow bats to cross the line without being harmed by passing trains,” according to the HS2 website. Villager Joan Sinclair has expressed dismay at the new project – John Lawrence “The design is based around a series of arches. Although not technically classed as a tunnel, this structure has been carefully chosen as being the most effective solution to match our design considerations,” it continues. “The design is durable and requires little maintenance, reducing overall costs and materials.” However, according to Thompson himself, the project, previously set to cost £40 million, is his “favourite example” of “why we can’t build infrastructure in this country”. Rae Sloan, also from Twyford, has been involved in a local campaign against HS2 from the start. “Every meeting it was bats, bats, bats,” she says. “They’ve been working on it solidly for more than a year now… The first thing they suggested was a couple of bridges, to which my facetious comment was, ‘Are you going to signpost it as well, so they can find where these bridges are?’” However, she concedes, “The environmental impact [of HS2] is absolutely horrendous, and my opinion is… [that] the whole thing is a waste of money, so we might as well protect what we can.” Villager Rae Sloan thinks the HS2 project is a waste of money – John Lawrence for The Telegraph Even those in favour of environmental protections strongly criticise the overspending that has dogged the project as a whole, which eventually led to it being dramatically scaled back by the Conservatives. Roger Landells, 79, the chairman of Twyford parish council, has been told that the enormous structure is “world beating” and the “first of its kind”. He will be 400 yards from the HS2 line when it is completed. “The figure of £100 million is about the aggregate value of all the houses in Twyford,” he says. “There are very few people [here] who have a good word to say about HS2, if for no other reason than that it is highly destructive of the land, it’s stopping a lot of people from using the countryside because footpaths are closed, and everything takes at least 50 per cent longer than they say it is going to. “To an extent, we feel they are making it up as they go along. The plans change considerably. At the moment, it’s going to be a railway to nowhere,” he adds. Thompson confessed to an industry conference that there is “no evidence” the bats are at risk from the trains. The bat is “generally pretty available in most of northern Europe, western Europe,” he added. “But nevertheless, under the Wildlife Act 1981, it’s deemed to be a protected species in the ***, this bat, even though there’s lots of them.” He suggested that Buckinghamshire County Council and Natural England disagreed with HS2 about measures to protect bats living on the planned route of the line, resulting in “hundreds of thousands of pounds” being spent on lawyers and consultants. Roger Landells, 79, the chairman of Twyford parish council, will live 400 yards from the HS2 line when it is completed – John Lawrence for The Telegraph However, Natural England said these claims were inaccurate. “Natural England has not required HS2 Ltd to build the reported structure, or any other structure, nor advised on the design or costs,” it said in a statement. Daniel Whitby is an ecologist who specialises in the research and conservation of bats, and argues that the Bechstein is getting a bad press. It is one of the “much rarer bats in Europe and in the ***,” he says, and is rightfully in need of protection. However, “I can’t see how any structure could cost that much,” he says. “This is a half-mile-long tunnel. So that’s, what, £100,000 a yard?” Those who live in its path have just about had enough. “It’s a lot of money,” is the mild assessment from Shirley Whittemore, who lives in a nearby village. Her husband, Jim, puts it less delicately. “It’s disgusting,” he says. “Of all the billions of pounds we need elsewhere… and not one party has the guts to stand up and cancel it.” The construction of HS2 has caused a litany of issues in the village, according to its residents, and to lavish £100 million on a glorified bat box is, perhaps, the final straw. “The Government keeps saying there’s a ****** *****,” says Sinclair. “[And] the people who live here get nothing. When you look at the state of everything – the roads for a start. The roads around here are atrocious. “People stopped buying houses in the villages when HS2 was first mentioned, because they didn’t know what it was going to be,” she continues. “The house prices went stagnant, and even now it takes a long time to sell.” The bats may, indeed, have a better deal. 4. Instagram Gets Rid of ‘Annoying’ Automatic Feed Refreshing When App is Opened Instagram Gets Rid of ‘Annoying’ Automatic Feed Refreshing When App is Opened Instagram is implementing a change for the removal of a feature that has long been considered annoying by users, the company head has confirmed via social media. From now on, the social media platform’s feed will not automatically refresh when the app is opened after a ******* of brief inactivity, enabling the user to see the posts which first appear on their screen. Notably, this development comes after the company confirmed that it deliberately lowers the quality of Instagram stories and Reels which do not fetch a lot of views, reserving the computation resources for videos that are being watched by a large number of users. No More Automatic Feed Refreshing on Instagram During a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) (via @_blunderchief), Instagram head Adam Mosseri was asked about a recent change on the social media platform which people did not know about. The official highlighted that Instagram has stopped doing what is internally known as a “rug pull” — a user interface (UI) feature which resulted in the feed getting automatically refreshed when the user accessed the app. As per Mosseri, this was done because the app was trying to load content and displayed the last downloaded posts and videos in the meantime. While this feature was aimed at improving user engagement, even the company official admitted it was “annoying” as any interesting content which first appeared on the screen moved and disappeared, forcing users to manually scroll down to look for it. Thankfully, this will not be the case anymore as the change has been implemented on the social media platform, Mosseri has confirmed. Instead of automatically refreshing the feed, Instagram will now load content but will not display it until the user scrolls. Then, the newly loaded content will be inserted below the posts which are already displayed. While this decision comes at the cost of an “engagement hit” for the platform, it is providing a “much better experience” for the average user. 6. China’s push for ******* amid demographic crisis lacks real incentives China’s push for ******* amid demographic crisis lacks real incentives A medical worker is taking care of newborns at Dongfang Hospital in Lianyungang, China, on January 1, 2024. Costfoto | Nurphoto | Getty Images China’s efforts to bolster birth rates have yet to address the core reasons for their rapid decline, according to analysts. Even though the country started easing its stringent one-child policy nearly a decade ago, the birth rate has continued to plummet, with a record low of 9.02 million newborns last year. The number of new marriage registrations also plunged by 25% year on year in the third quarter, indicating the total for the year will drop to 6.4 million, the lowest since 1979, according to financial services firm Nomura’s analysis of official data released this month. Rather than trying to induce a sizeable “birth spurt,” China’s policies so far have been more about “supporting families [and] allowing those who do want to have a second or third child to do this with more ease and affordability,” said Lauren Johnston, associate professor of China Studies Center at the University of Sydney. Recent measures are “a small step in a long-run agenda,” she said. ******** authorities last month announced high-level plans for subsidies and tax breaks to households with children under the age of 3. The measures also extended maternity leave to 158 days from 98 days. Last year, the country doubled childcare tax breaks to 2,000 yuan ($280) per month. Births in China have been on a drastic downward trend since the government implemented its “one-child policy” nationwide in 1980. The ******* Nations in July forecast that China, the second most-populous country in the world, will likely lose more than half of its population by 2100 in the greatest drop of any country. The “mental hangover” from the one-child policy has lingered and “fundamentally changed young people’s perception of families,” said Harry Murphy Cruise, economist at Moody’s Analytics. He added that slower economic growth has also led “young people to second-guess or delay plans to start a family.” “It is an incredibly difficult task [and] there is no silver bullet to lifting fertility rates,” said Cruise. World Bank data showed that the fertility rate, defined as births per woman, was 1.2 in China in 2022, below 1.7 in the U.S., which has benefited from a more open immigration policy. China’s share of the world’s live births is expected to drop to around 3% in 2100 from 8% in 2021, according to Austin Schumacher, an assistant professor of health metrics sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington. “Current studies on various pro-natal policies have only shown modest increases which our projections show will not be sufficient to reverse population decline,” Schumacher said. “However, with new innovations and research into improving current endeavors and developing new one, it could be possible.” An increasingly pressing factor for families in China is uncertainty about income for raising a child. After decades of rapid expansion, China’s economy has slowed down, dragged down by a real estate slump. Crackdowns on after-school tutoring, gaming, finance and internet platform companies have also hit hiring in industries that were once popular with recent graduates. China’s youth unemployment rate — measured by those aged 16 to 24 and not in school— rose to a record high of 18.8% in August. It edged lower in September. “The problem really is that people don’t have the confidence to make ends meet for themselves, let alone think about having enough to raise children,” said Sheana Yue, economist at Oxford Economics. Measures that “earnestly” boost income and alleviate households’ living costs would “go a long way” in improving sentiment around childbearing in China, said Yue. National health authorities have this year tried to encourage businesses to support maternity leave by emphasizing the availability of state funds to pay female employees who give birth. Pressure of city life Scholars in general have noted the link between urbanization and falling birth rates. About 83% of Americans lived in cities in 2023, versus 65% in China, according to World Bank figures. That’s up from 19% in 1980 — when the U.S. urbanization rate was 74%. The “hectic and stressful work schedule” in big cities tends to discourage marriage and births, said Darren Tay, head of APAC country risk at BMI. That could “blunt the impact of incentives meant to encourage births.” The share of China’s population aged 20 to 39 has already declined, indicating fewer marriages ahead, Nomura economists said. That’s likely to lead to fewer births over the next few years, the economists said, unless there is a “material change in incentives for married couples.” They expect that at an annual parliamentary meeting in March, Beijing could announce up to 500 billion yuan ($70 billion) in annual spending to boost births. Lack of incentives There appears to be a lack of proper incentives aimed at boosting birth rates, while certain steps may even encroach on information many societies consider private. For instance, a few online posts this year claimed local social workers in China indiscriminately called women asking if they were pregnant, and pressured them to pick up free folic acid. The central government’s latest policy tasks local authorities with setting up a budget for public childcare centers and easing the limits of housing loans for families with more than one child. That leaves implementation up to local authorities, many of which have struggled financially. Tianchen Xu, senior economist at Economic Intelligence Unit, pointed out that prior policies to encourage more births have been “inconsistent and inadequate” depending on local government finances and willingness to prioritize the measures. To turn around the falling birth rates, China needs “a combination of strong direct financial incentives,” Xu said, particularly subsidies and benefits for housing. Strickland onto new Serbian gold strike 350m from existing ******** Strickland onto new Serbian gold strike 350m from existing ******** A decision to put a couple of wildcat holes down about 350m from Strickland Metals Medanovac ******** in Serbia has paid off in spades and has confirmed the third new gold and base metals discovery at the company’s Rogozna project in Serbia in just four years. The new discovery, courtesy of some scout drilling outside of the known resource at Medanovac, hit 40.3m going 2.6 grams per tonne gold from 558m including a higher grade 12m section grading 5.7 g/t gold from 584m. Notably, mineralisation was struck for extended lengths in that same ***** at three different depths with a shallower 47.4m intersection from 462m coming in at 1.2g/t gold equivalent which included a 10m section going 2.7g/t gold equivalent. Closer to surface more mineralisation was encountered in the same ***** from 391.5m with a 15.6m intersection grading 2g/t gold equivalent. A second ***** into the same zone produced two solid mineralised sections including 23m grading 1.3g/t gold equivalent from 661.8m and 17m running 3.5g/t gold equivalent further down from 744m. The 17m intersection included a higher grade 11m hit going 4.6g/t gold equivalent from 750m. Strickland says the new discovery is still open in all directions, which notably, includes towards the surface. Outcropping limestone and old workings have further strengthened Strickland’s case for this working theory. While the new hits are relatively deep, the company says they do not necessarily define the starting point of the ******** which could start closer to surface given the two holes drilled using easy access points from existing tracks at surface rather than an ideal geological location. Once the orientation of the orebody has been confirmed Strickland will then undertake follow up drilling including looking for up-dip extensions to test shallower zones. The Kotlovi discovery is a particularly satisfying one for our team, as to deliver a >100 GxM intercept in the first exploration holes into a large new target is a rare achievement. It also provides the team with a great sense of pride to make this first discovery under the Strickland Metals banner. The company believes while the dataset is still limited, the Kotlovi target currently measures 500m long by 200m wide and 700m deep. Given the discovery’s proximity to the company’s Medanovac ******** just 350 to the east, L’Herpiniere says there is a strong possibility the mineralisation may run between them both, opening up the potential for a much ******* scale ******** in time. Strickland is now gearing up for follow-up drilling to gauge the size of the Kotlovi mineralised zone. Four diamond rigs are also currently busy across its multiple skarn-hosted deposits in the wider Rogozna project area. Two rigs are checking for further up-dip extensions at Gradina, one is on the hunt for porphyry-style mineralisation at Jezerska Reka and the fourth is exploring targets near Medanovac. The company is also waiting on assay results from several holes, including two initial extension holes at Gradina. With so many good results coming from Rogozna recently, including a 50m hit of 5.6g/t gold equivalent within a huge 365.8m intercept grading 2g/t gold equivalent at Medanovac and a massive 545.7m strike grading 1.1g/t at Shanac, Strickland appears to have the makings of a globally significant tier one asset on its hands. Four diamond rigs are working 24/7 with more assay results due, together with an upcoming maiden resource at Medanovac which will no doubt be highly anticipated by the market. Mattel Pulls ‘Wicked’ Dolls After Mistakenly Listing ****** ***** Site on Packaging Mattel Pulls ‘Wicked’ Dolls After Mistakenly Listing ****** ***** Site on Packaging Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande at the “Wicked” Los Angeles Premiere on Nov. 9, 2024 – Credit: Gilbert Flores/Variety via Getty Images Mattel has pulled its Wicked dolls after packaging for the movie merchandise mistakenly listed a website to an ****** ***** site rather than to the Wicked movie website. The film, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is adapted from the popular Broadway musical (and does not require being over 18 as it is firmly rated PG). The toy company apologized on Sunday for the snafu. More from Rolling Stone “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” the statement reads via The Hollywood Reporter. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.” The character dolls with the mislabeled packaging feature fashion and singing ones, along with collectible varieties, and include Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Elphaba dolls. As for the misprint, those who want information on the movie should visit the film’s official site, wickedmovie.com. The erroneous website listed on the errant packaging that’s currently being pulled left out the crucial “movie” part of the URL. Do with that what you will. As of Sunday evening, the Mattel-made dolls were no longer available at Target. Per THR, the company is in the process of yanking them from the shelves of other retailers, such as Walmart, Amazon, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Best Buy, and DSW. Jon M. Chu’s Wicked arrives in theaters on Nov. 22. In addition to Grande and Erivo, the film stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. 15. Haiti’s prime minister ousted after six months Haiti’s prime minister ousted after six months Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has been fired by the country’s ruling council less than six months after he took office. An executive order, signed by eight of the council’s nine members, named businessman and former Haiti Senate candidate Alix Didier Fils-Aime as Conile’s replacement. Conille, a former ******* Nations official, was brought in to lead Haiti through an ongoing, gang-led security crisis and had been expected to help pave the way for the country’s first presidential elections since 2016. He described his ousting as ********, saying in a letter – seen by Reuters news agency – that it raised “serious concerns” about Haiti’s future. Haiti currently has neither a president nor parliament and, according to its constitution, only the latter can sack a sitting prime minister. Conille was sworn in on 3 June. “This resolution, taken outside any legal and constitutional framework, raises serious concerns about its legitimacy,” Conille’s letter was quoted as saying. Haiti’s transitional presidential council (TPC) was created in April after Ariel Henry, Conille’s predecessor, was forced from office by a network of gangs that had taken over parts of the capital Port-au-Prince. Henry left Haiti to attend a summit in Guyana on 25 February 2024 and gang members subsequently seized the city’s international airport, preventing him from returning. The TPC was tasked with restoring democratic order to the Caribbean country, where such ********* is rife. More than 3,600 people have been ******* in Haiti since January and more than 500,000 have had to leave their homes, according to the UN, which describes Haiti as being one of the poorest countries in the world. Two million Haitians currently face emergency levels of hunger, UN data shows, while almost half the population “do not have enough to eat”. One of the country’s most powerful gang leaders, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as Barbecue, previously said he would be prepared to end the ********* if armed groups were allowed to be involved in talks to establish a new government. Presidential elections were last held in Haiti eight years ago, when Jovenel Moïse of the Tèt Kale party was elected. Since his ******* in July 2021, the post of president has been vacant. Gangs in Haiti have capitalised on the power vacuum and expanded their control over swathes of the country, which has effectively been rendered lawless in places. Last month, it was reported that hundreds of police officers had been deployed to Haiti from Kenya, with hundreds more set to join them. 17. Why You Should Never, Ever Make Your Bed as Soon as You Wake Up, According to Doctors Why You Should Never, Ever Make Your Bed as Soon as You Wake Up, According to Doctors Maybe it’s a hot take, but I’m a “why-make-your-bed-if-you’re-just-going-to-lie-back-down” person. However, I admit I understand why some people love making their bed every morning (or, let’s be real: they love having a made bed, but perhaps not actually making it). It’s a great way to quickly feel productive, and cleaning is beneficial for both physical and mental health. But according to a video by Dr. Myro Figura, MD, an anesthesiologist on Instagram, making your bed right when you get up can have some pretty ****** (and unhealthy) consequences. Say what?! Find out why you may want to embrace your inner sloth and forgo making your bed right away—and how to protect yourself from the ****** reason behind it. Related: Waking Up Covered in Sweat Every Night? The Reason Might Not Be As Obvious As You Think Why You Shouldn’t Make Your Bed as Soon as You Wake Up, According to Doctors Basically, Dr. Figura explains that people sweat when they sleep, so when they make their bed, that traps in the moisture released from sweating overnight. That creates a great environment for dust mites—tiny bugs that eat humans’ ***** skin cells—to thrive. According to Dr. Figura, the average mattress has more than 10 million dust mites, and if you have a pillow that two years old or more, 10% of its weight is actually from dust mites and their *****. Are you gagging yet? As such, Dr. Figura says that your best option is waiting at least one to two hours after waking up to make your bed. This gives the moisture in your sheets, pillowcases, blankets and mattress time to dry up so the dust mites can’t, as he says, “have a party” (in the form of eating, procreating and excreting) in your sweat. We have to double check: Is this true? Parade asked another doctor for info. SIGN UP for tips to stay healthy & fit with the top moves, clean eats, health trends & more delivered right to your inbox twice a week Why Dust Mites Love a Made Bed Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, chief medical advisor for Sleepopolis, largely agrees with Dr. Figura. “Dust mites thrive in warm, moist environments, like a freshly made bed,” he says. “By leaving your bed unmade, air can circulate through the sheets, which may reduce moisture, making it ******* for mites to survive.” If you thought that was ******, we have some bad news: This next part only gets grosser, unfortunately. “Dust mites are not harmful in themselves,” Dr. Dasgupta explains, “but their waste products and ***** body parts can trigger allergic reactions, causing respiratory issues and skin irritation.” (Uh, yikes!) Related: This One Symptom Is a Weird Asthma Sign Most People Miss How Concerned Should I Be About Dust Mites in My Bed? As ****** as that is, some people have made their bed for decades and may figure this issue can’t be that big of a deal, if they’re still here. Fair! “[Dust mites] only pose health issues for people sensitive to dust mite allergens, such as those with asthma or allergies,” Dr. Dasgupta says. Still, that’s a lot of people—an estimated 20 million Americans have asthma or are sensitive to dust mite allergens. Those individuals may experience mild to severe allergic reactions. On the mild (but still bothersome) end, you’re looking at sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, itchy eyes and coughing. At worst, however, people could have asthma attacks, chest tightness, difficulty breathing and wheezing. Related: The #1 Unexpected Sign of Allergies Most People Miss, According to Allergists Signs of Dust Mites For better or worse, dust mites are too small to see with the ****** eye. As a result, to know if you have them, you have to rely on those symptoms mentioned above (sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and worsened asthma). Dr. Dasgupta particularly encourages being mindful of symptoms in the morning after you’ve slept for (hopefully) several hours. If you’re still unsure what’s triggering your asthma or allergies, see an allergist, immunologist and/or otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) who can best help you narrow down what’s making you feel so awful. Related: Yep, Allergies Might Be to Blame for Your Upset Stomach—Here’s What to Know How to Reduce Dust Mites in Your Home After that not-so-fun news, let’s move to something more positive: Getting rid of these pests and being proactive to prevent them. Dusting your furniture and floors regularly Covering mattresses and pillows with allergen encasements Reducing clutter and stuffed animals Washing bedding and stuffed animals in hot water weekly Vacuuming regularly Using an air purifier Hopefully, steps like these will help you feel less bogged down by buggers—so you can sleep well and tidy up when you’re done. 18. Eight bits of gossip we uncovered on the night Eight bits of gossip we uncovered on the night Reuters K-Pop band Le Sserafim made their *** debut performing at Manchester’s Co-Op Live Arena The MTV Awards came to Manchester for the first time in their 30-year history on Sunday night, but somehow didn’t feel very Mancunian. There was no sign of Take That or Aitch, or Liam Gallagher – even though he won best rock star. Organisers made a few subtle nods to the city: The stage was framed in the ****** and yellow stripes of Factory Records, and New Order’s Blue Monday pumped through the speakers every time nominees were announced. But the show took a more global perspective, highlighting acts from Mexico, South Korea, South ******* and America – including a predictable victory for Taylor Swift in the night’s two biggest categories, best artist and video of the year. She only appeared by video, choosing instead to spend the night watching her boyfriend, ********* Football player Travis Kelce, lead the Kansas City Chiefs to victory against the Denver Broncos. But there were plenty of other stars at the show and on the red carpet. Here’s some of the gossip we picked up along the way. 1) Raye gave an update on her missing song booksPA Media Two weeks ago, Raye told fans her second album had been delayed by thieves who stole her car and, with it, several notebooks full of lyrics and song ideas. On the red carpet, she confirmed the police hadn’t been able to track them down, saying: “I’ve just had to let it go.” The singer said she couldn’t recreate a lot of the ideas, because the act of writing them down freed her mind to work on other things. “You let it go, because you think you can come back to it – and now there are so many ideas that are just gone. It’s so sad.” But the singer, who won best *** artist, maintained a positive outlook. “Everything happens for a reason. I’ll have to start again and maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.” 2) Busta Rhymes revealed his unlikely comedy heroReuters The decision to bring rap legend Busta Rhymes to Manchester to receive a global icon award wasn’t as random as it sounded. Before he developed his rapid-***** rap delivery, an 11-year-old Rhymes spent two summers living with his Aunt Velma in Morecambe. “I went to karate school, and we illegally went into nightclubs, to make a little money break-dancing,” he told us. “I remember Boy George was cool, Wham was cool,” he continued. “But our favourite was Benny Hill. Benny Hill is still our favourite to this day. I don’t think anybody has as ever been as funny or as charismatic as Benny Hill.” So, during those halcyon days of watching smutty comedy in Morecambe, did he ever think he’d be back, winning a lifetime achievement prize? “You can never foresee something like that,” he said. “When we first got involved with hip-hop, we didn’t do it for none of the accolades. We just did it because we loved it. “But with that being said, tonight is a dream come true.” To honour that moment, he gave a nine-minute acceptance speech thanking everyone from his mother to an art teacher he’d met backstage. “I’ve never got an award from MTV before. Thirty four years of professionally recording [and] this is the first time I’m getting an award from MTV. It feels incredible.” 3) Olly Alexander had advice for next year’s Eurovision contestantReuters Olly Alexander played a pre-show party on Saturday night, and couldn’t quite believe the reception for Dizzy – the song which earned him 18th place at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. “That went down a lot better than it did in Eurovision,” he laughed, shortly before Jedward invaded the stage and caused utter chaos. At the main ceremony, Alexander was there to award song of the year to Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso. But he also had a few words for anyone considering representing the *** at next year’s contest. “I would say to them, whoever it is, ‘Call me, and we will have a serious conversation about it’,” he said with the haunted look of a man who has seen some things. 4) Benson Boone has a new fan: BezReuters In addition to winning best new artist, US singer Benson Boone opened the ceremony with a spectacular performance that saw him suspended mid-air on a grand piano, before pulling off a spectacular front flip from a platform at the side of the stage. “The insurance is always crazy,” he laughed, “but I love to perform.” One person who couldn’t believe his eyes was Happy Mondays star Bez, who accosted Boone during an interview with Rita Ora. “When you came down on that grand piano,” he said, “I thought, ‘Elton John is going to be gutted.'” 5) Le Sserafim escaped to Manchester’s Christmas marketYunjin / Instagram Manchester is home to the ***’s biggest K-Pop shop and, on Sunday morning, the staff couldn’t quite believe one of the genre’s biggest girl bands had landed in their city. “Le Sserafim were posting pictures from the Christmas market,” one of them told me. “That’s only five minutes from here!” The five-piece, who’ve been setting chart records over in the US, jetted in for their first-ever *** performance, a mash-up of Chasing Lightning and the 90s house banger Crazy. But they were more excited to be out on the town without being mobbed. “It was so good, we had baklava!” enthused singer Huh Yun-Jin; while her bandmate Sakura tucked into a portion of fish and chips. “It was my first time,” she said. “I loved it.” On stage at the EMAs, the band got one of the biggest screams of the night, despite being relatively unknown in the ***… for now. “Coming to Europe is something that we’ve always dreamt of, so this is absolutely surreal,” said Yun-Jin. “We just want to make a good impression.” Mission accomplished. 6) Jedward spent two hours on the red carpetReuters For absolutely no reason at all, Jedward went on a massive charm offensive for the international press. “Oasis are back and Jedward are back!” they declared, before racing over to baffled ******* and French journalists, while singing Stop Crying Your Heart Out. This went on for two deliriously brilliant hours, as the twins, who found fame on The X Factor 15 years ago, insisted that “a lot of artists have been inspired by Jedward”. And, to be fair, they have proof. Mercury Prize nominee CMAT recently said the brothers had encouraged her to finish her second album, with a motivational voice message. “You have to think about it, in life,” explained John. “Don’t always think you’re the main character. Reach out to other people. Serve that tennis ball and see what they do. “It’s always about keeping that spark alive.” They were, to be honest, an absolute blast. 7) The Liam Payne tribute was perfectly judged Watch: Rita Ora becomes emotional as she leads the tribute to the star Liam Payne won 12 MTV EMAs during his time in One Direction, and later used the ceremony to launch his solo career, performing his global smash hit Strip That Down at the 2017 ceremony. It was only fitting that the event marked his ****** – but striking the right tone in the middle of a huge showbiz event is never easy. In the end, his friend and collaborator Rita Ora just spoke from the heart. “There were so many ways that we were talking about honouring him,” she said. “But sometimes simply speaking is enough.” Addressing the camera directly, she shared her memories of the 31-year-old, as her voice cracked. “Liam Payne was one of the kindest people that I knew,” she said. “He brought so much joy to every room he walked into. And he left such a mark on this world.” It was sombre and restrained, yet powerfully emotional. Ora wasn’t the only one crying. 8) Tyla paid tribute to AaliyahPA / Getty Images South ******** star Tyla, best known for her viral hit Water, clinched both the best R&B and best Afrobeats awards. The awards marked her continued ascent, after being named one of the BBC’s Sounds of 2024 – but she made sure to honour her inspirations. On the red carpet, she rocked a vintage Roberto Cavalli dress with a turquoise blue zebra print. The exact same dress had previously been worn by US rapper Eve at the 2000 Soul Train Awards. And R&B legend Aaliyah wore a canary yellow version at the 2000 MTV Awards, where she won best female video for Try Again. The ceremony took place in September 2000, less than a year before Aaliyah’s tragic ****** in an plane accident. The singer was just 22 at the time – the same age that Tyla is now. 19. ***** hamper emergency action but no crackdown consensus ***** hamper emergency action but no crackdown consensus The spread of ***** and fake news makes it ******* for emergency responders to do their job and impacts social harmony, but conflict ******** over how to stifle it. A crackdown on misinformation and disinformation would force tech giants to act on falsehoods but free speech proponents are worried federal government legislation goes too far. Misinformation could put people at risk by eroding trust in emergency services and clouding accurate and lifesaving information on social media, National Emergency Management Agency deputy co-ordinator general Joel Buffone said. There needed to be an ability to intervene against posts that actively sought to spread false information and cause harm “ensuring that the accurate information is amplified and is corrected”, he said. “Emergency communications have the potential to make or break a response – those efforts can be undone by relatively small amounts of mis and disinformation,” Mr Buffone said. He said sensationalist posts that did not reflect reality on the ground created ***** and uncertainty. The proposed laws were a lever that could help hold tech giants accountable and provide a method to ****** down on disinformation that would save emergency resources, he said. Spreading misinformation was used to dehumanise minorities and incite hatred in an “extremely visceral and powerful way”, *********** ******* Advocacy Network legal advisor Rita Jabri Markwell said. Muslims were contending with people labelled rapists and murderers because of their ******, which then made ********* against them acceptable and led to extremism, she told the hearing. She pointed to the Christchurch massacre where dozens of Muslims were ******* in a mass ********* at a Mosque by a far-right extremist. “It’s the job of public regulators to act here and treat racism as a public harm for health because it is a harm to our health,” she said. But there was concern the laws overreached as they aimed to capture claims, opinions, commentary and invective. Some content such as scam material could easily be proved false but constitutional law expert Anne Twomey said this became more complicated when talking about opinions, commentary or claims. “You can’t prove someone’s opinion is false – it’s an opinion,” she said, adding that even if you relied on expert analysis, there could be varied perspectives. Trying to arbiter truth in opinions landed you “splat bang into political communication and that’s where the thing will fall over”, she said, referring to the constitution’s political freedom protections. Defining disinformation as an intent to deceive someone was also problematic, Dr Twomey said. Someone being told a fact was false before repeating it did not mean they intended to deceive as they could genuinely have believed it was true, she said. Labor’s legislation faces a jagged path through the Senate, with the coalition arguing it curbs free speech and crossbenchers expressing reservations including having social media platforms decide what constitutes misinformation. 20. After Trump’s win, some women are considering the 4B movement After Trump’s win, some women are considering the 4B movement In the hours and days since it became clear that Donald Trump would be re-elected president of the ******* States, there’s been a surge of interest in the US for 4B. Young ******** women across TikTok and Instagram are discussing and sharing information about the South Korean feminist movement, in which straight women refuse to marry, have children, date or have **** with men. These women say they are enraged and fed up after a majority of their male counterparts voted for a candidate who was found liable for ******* ****** and whose appointment of three ************* Supreme Court justices led to the overturning of national ********* rights protections. In response, they say they’re swearing off men — and they’re encouraging others around the country to join them. “We have pandered and begged for men’s safety and done all the things that we were supposed to, and they still hate us,” Ashli Pollard, a 36-year-old in St. Louis, told CNN. “So if you’re going to hate us, then we’re going to do what we want.” What is the 4B movement? 4B is a shorthand for the four Korean words bihon, bichulsan, biyeonae and bisekseu, which translate to no marriage, no childbirth, no dating and no **** with men. The 4B movement emerged in South Korea around 2015 or 2016, per Ju Hui Judy Han, an assistant professor in gender studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Mostly popular among young women in their 20s, she described it as a fringe offshoot of #MeToo and other feminist movements that arose in response to stark gender inequality in the country. In 2016, a woman was brutally ******* near a Seoul subway station — the perpetrator reportedly said he ******* her because he felt ignored by women. The incident prompted a national reckoning around how women are treated in the country, expanding to include conversations around femicide, revenge ***** and digital **** *******. A woman places a flower for a South Korean woman who was stabbed to ****** at an exit of Gangham subway station in Seoul on May 21, 2016. – Ahn Young-joon/AP Feminism and the gender divide have been hot button issues in South Korea. Women in the country are paid about one-third less than men, according to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development — the highest wage gap among OECD nations. And despite being one of the world’s most advanced economies, women there are scarcely represented in senior and managerial roles. The 4B movement was decentralized and existed in various iterations online and offline, making it difficult to assess its true size and scale. Over the years, the movement has diminished and splintered over disagreements about the role of ****** and trans women, according to Han. But she says 4B and other South Korean feminist movements drew attention to gender inequality in the country and emphasized collective action. “It’s not a very widespread movement, but the sentiments behind it I think a lot of people empathize with,” Han says. “When there is such widespread ********* against women, there is such systemic discrimination and inequality, when there’s so much that make marriage, childbirth and child rearing … difficult, why and how could anyone imagine getting married and giving birth?” Though South Korea’s 4B movement mostly faded from media headlines in recent years, the US election has renewed interest. “A lot of us — straight or not, ****** or not, whether you’re in a marriage or not — are going to be in the same boat, dealing with an oppressive and violent institutions,” Han says. “And we see each other.” The US election is inspiring conversation around 4B It’s far too early to tell whether the 4B movement might seriously catch on in the US. But so far, at least, it’s generated a lot of online discussion among young women. Some women are discovering the movement anew and are vowing to join. Others who are already married or partnered up say they plan to protest in other ways, such as boycotting male-owned businesses or refusing to do emotional labor for men. Pollard says she learned about South Korea’s 4B movement a few years ago, inspiring her to “examine what a life looks like without centering men so deeply.” Since 2022, she says she hasn’t dated or slept with men and has realized that she’s better off on her own. She has the resources to support herself without marriage, and she plans to have a child alone. Her decision to disengage from men wasn’t necessarily an act of vengeance, she says. Rather, it was about putting herself first. Now that other women around the country have taken an interest in 4B, she says she wants them to realize that they have other options. “You push people far enough and they’re done,” she says. “How will that affect politics? We’ll see … but I think that women and their joy is going to be something that can’t really be overlooked anymore. Women are choosing themselves in droves.” Alexa Vargas, a 26-year-old from Boston, says she stopped engaging with men a few years ago after a series of unhealthy relationships that included ****** and ********, and it wasn’t until earlier this year that she realized there was a movement and language that aligned with her actions. Though she says that “men need a wake-up call,” her decision is more about herself and other women. “I don’t know if men are going to change their ways. I don’t know how this is going to pan out,” she says. “My goal in life and in this movement is to protect young women and ******.” Women who have been talking about 4B online say the way some men have responded to their posts are already proving their point. Abby K., a 27-year-old from Florida, recently broke up with her boyfriend over dismissive comments he made about Trump’s history of ******* ******. When she posted a video about that and her decision to join the 4B movement, she says men flooded her DMs with ****** threats and hateful comments about her appearance. “It doesn’t exactly entice you to re-enter the dating pool,” she adds. Some are skeptical 4B will catch on In Han’s view, the 4B movement is unlikely to become mainstream in the US. She says it relies too heavily on the gender binary and that those inspired to join it as a result of the election are overlooking the fact that plenty of women voted for Trump, too. (Though Vice President Kamala Harris maintained an edge with women, exit polls indicate that her lead was smaller than President Joe Biden’s or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s during their respective presidential campaigns.) Hadia Khanani, a 24-year-old from Florida, also has reservations about 4B in the US. Though she hasn’t engaged with men romantically for several years in an effort to prioritize herself, she wants women to dig deeper and examine their own role in upholding patriarchy. She also worries about the consequences of further isolating men. “The conversation online has been centered around sleeping with men and dating men, obviously to protect yourself, but I just feel like misogyny and patriarchy is much deeper than that,” she says. “I think a lot of it is rooted in the way that men are raised in society.” Even if large numbers of women don’t adopt the strict tenets of 4B, those who are taking part for now hope the recent conversations around it lead women to think about themselves and their circumstances differently. “I don’t ever expect everyone in America to hold hands and agree not to date men,” Abby K. says. “I could definitely see it fueling change in some way.” Han predicts that ********* interest in the 4B movement will subside quickly. Still, she hopes that the recent discourse around it will help women understand that they aren’t alone in their struggles and build solidarity with others around the world. “I think a lot of ********* women are … trying to find ways to seek empowerment and find a way to survive,” Han says. “And I hope what they find is not necessarily a particular movement like the 4B movement, but a recognition that struggles for reproductive justice and gender equality are certainly not just ********* concerns.” CNN’s Leda Joy Abkenari contributed to this report. U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said ******* had made some progress by announcing the opening of a new crossing into central Gaza and approving new delivery routes. But he said ******* must do more. “It’s not just sufficient to open new roads if more humanitarian assistance isn’t going through those roads,” he said. A desperate daily struggle ******** forces have been hammering the towns of Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya ******** camp. Witnesses report intense fighting between troops and militants. A trickle of food has reached Gaza City, but as of Thursday, nothing entered the towns farther north for 30 days, even as an estimated 70,000 people remain there, said Louise Wateridge, spokesperson for the U.N. agency for ************ refugees, UNRWA, speaking from Gaza City. The government acknowledged in late October that it hadn’t allowed aid into Jabaliya because of military “operational constraints” in response to a petition by ******** human rights groups. On Saturday, COGAT said it allowed 11 trucks of food and supplies into Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya. But Alia Zaki, a spokeswoman for the WFP, said ******** troops at a checkpoint forced the convoy to unload the food before it could reach shelters in Beit Hanoun. It was not clear what then happened to the supplies. Palestinians in the north described to The Associated Press a desperate daily struggle to find food, water and safety, as strikes level buildings, sometimes ******** whole families. Arqouq said he goes out at night to search bombed-out buildings: “Sometimes you find a half-empty package of flour, canned food and lentils.” His family relies on help from others sheltering at a Jabaliya school, he said — but their food, too, is running low. “We are like dogs and cats searching for their food in the rubble,” said Um Saber, a widow. She said she and her six children had to flee a school-turned-shelter in Beit Lahiya when ******* struck it. Now they live in her father-in-law’s home, stretching meager supplies of lentils and pasta with 40 others, mostly women and children. Ahmed Abu Awda, a 28-year-old father of three living with 25 relatives in a Jabaliya house, said they have a daily meal of lentils with bread, rationing to ensure children eat. “Sometimes we don’t eat at all,” he said. Lubna, a 38-year-old mother of five, left food behind when fleeing as strikes and drone ***** pummeled the street in Jabaliya. “We got out by a miracle,” she said from Beit Lahiya, where they’re staying. She spoke on condition her family name not be used for ***** of her safety. Her husband scavenged flour from destroyed homes after ******** forces withdrew around nearby Kamal Adwan hospital, she said. It’s moldy, she said, so they sift it first. Her young daughter, Selina, is visibly gaunt and bony, Lubna said. Surrender or starve The offensive has raised fears among Palestinians that ******* seeks to empty northern Gaza and hold it long term under a surrender-or-starve plan proposed by former generals. The ******** military has denied receiving such orders, but the government hasn’t denied the plan outright. Witnesses report ******** troops going building-to-building, forcing people to leave toward Gaza City. On Thursday, the ******** military ordered new evacuations from several Gaza City neighborhoods, raising the possibility of a ground ******** there. The U.N. said some 14,000 displaced Palestinians were sheltering there. Food and supplies are stretched for the several hundred thousand people in Gaza City, too. Much of the city has been flattened by months of ******** bombardment and shelling. Dr. Rana Soboh, a nutrition specialist at Gaza City’s Patient Friend Benevolent Hospital, said she sees some 350 cases of moderate to severe acute malnutrition daily, most from the north but also Gaza City. “The bone of their chest is showing, the eyes are protruding,” she said, and many have trouble concentrating. “You repeat something a number of times, so they can understand what we are saying.” She cited a 32-year-old woman shedding weight in her third month of pregnancy — when they put her on the scale, she weighed only 40 kilograms (88 pounds). “We are suffering, facing the ghost of famine that is hovering over Gaza,” Soboh said. A problem long in the making Even before the siege in the north, the Patient Friend hospital saw a flood of children suffering from malnutrition — more than 4,780 in September compared with 1,100 in July, said Dr Ahmad Eskiek, who oversees hospital operations. Soboh said staff get calls from Beit Lahiya and Jabaliya pleading for help: “What can we do? We have nothing.” She had worked at Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north but fled with her family to Gaza City. Now they stay with 22 people in her uncle’s two-bedroom apartment. Thursday, she had had a morsel of bread for breakfast and later a meal of yellow lentils. As winter rains near, new arrivals set up tents wherever they can. Some 1,500 people are in a U.N. school already heavily damaged in strikes that “could collapse at any moment,” UNRWA spokesperson Wateridge said. With toilets destroyed, people try to set aside a corner of a classroom to use, leaving waste “streaming down the walls of the school,” she said. Others in Gaza City move into the rubble of buildings, draping tarps between layers of collapsed concrete, she said. “It’s like the carcass of a city,” she said. ___ Magdy reported from Cairo. 24. Scientists warn of dangerous issue cropping up weeks after hurricane devastation — here’s what you need to know Scientists warn of dangerous issue cropping up weeks after hurricane devastation — here’s what you need to know Weeks after the devastation from Hurricane Milton, Floridians are now facing another challenge from the storm’s aftermath: mold. Homeowners with flood damage may endure mold buildup and mold-related illnesses, according to a recent article published in Wired. What’s happening? Climate experts sound the alarm, warning Floridians are at risk of mold growth as a result of Hurricane Milton. Across the state of Florida, homeowners returned to houses with severe water damage after the category 3 hurricane. Mold can start appearing within 24-48 hours after moisture exposure, per reports by Wired. What’s worse, Florida’s hot and humid October climate only exacerbates the spread of mold. Cases of storm-related mold buildup have been examined in the past. For example, after Hurricane Katrina, the CDC inspected 112 homes impacted by flooding and reported that nearly half had visible mold growth. More severe and powerful storms like Hurricane Milton are a result of rising global temperatures. Experts now warn that mold buildup and mold-related illnesses post-storm will become more common. “Mold is absolutely associated with climate change,” environmental health research scientist at Harvard University Mary Johnson told Wired. “Those extreme weather patterns, including hurricanes, can allow water to come into a home or any type of indoor space. When it’s damp, the likelihood of mold growing indoors increases.” Watch now: NYC just expanded its curbside composting programWhy is climate-related mold growth important? Exposure to mold buildup can result in mold-related illnesses. Symptoms can include itchy eyes, skin rashes, and infections. Immunocompromised individuals, such as people with chronic respiratory problems and asthma, are at a high risk of developing mold-related illnesses. In severe cases, it can also trigger serious asthma attacks. What’s being done about climate-related mold growth? Researchers advise homeowners to seal up any moldy areas of their home with a tarp. They also recommend ventilating the area with open windows or fans until the mold is successfully removed. Low-income homeowners and renters can also receive financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for mold-related damage from hurricanes.
