A new report suggests that Apple could double its iPhone production in India if the US imposes tariffs on ******** imports. The Cupertino-based company is likely to increase its iPhone production in India to over $30 billion annually if the newly elected US President Donald Trump decides to impose heavy tariffs on ******** imports. Trump’s Potential Tariff Hike Likely to Benefit India Economic Times citing officials and industry experts reports that Apple could double iPhone production in India to more than $30 billion annually over the next two years if new US President Donald Trump carries out his threat of imposing hefty tariffs on imports from China. Apple currently manufactures devices worth approximately $15-16 billion (roughly Rs. 1,30,000 crore to Rs. 1,36,000 crore) in India. Trump had threatened to impose tariffs of 60-100 percent on goods imported from China during his election campaigns. This could prompt Apple to shift its predictions to India. In his first term, Trump imposed tariffs on ******** imports and analysts believe that Trump’s return could further affect Indo-US relations. While some areas of India may face challenges, the electronics sector especially iPhone production will reportedly benefit from this move. If Apple expands its iPhone production in India as anticipated, India’s share in global iPhone manufacturing will surge over 26 percent in the coming years, up from the current 12 to 14 percent. The fresh capacity potentially create 2,00,000 jobs, said the report. The report quotes Neil Shah, vice-president at technology researcher Counterpoint Research, as saying that overall iPhone production value in India has the potential to go well beyond $30 billion a year in the coming couple of years. The shift in iPhone manufacturing would depend on whether the Indian government can make deep reforms to address cost inefficiencies and policy uncertainties due to taxes and tariffs to ensure that the additional production does not shift from China to other countries like Vietnam, adds the report. Over the past few years, Apple has notably increased its supplier base in India, partnering with major tech firms and contract manufacturers, including Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron. Analysts said SMIC has been making such advanced chips using equipment supplied by companies like the Netherlands’ ASML and U.S.-based Applied Materials, which it managed to stockpile before U.S. sanctions took effect. However, SMIC has faced difficulties in ramping up production due to U.S. export controls barring it from purchasing equipment necessary for advanced chip manufacturing, while domestic alternatives are not yet ready for the effort. WhatsApp’s official changelog says that message drafts are now indicated with a Draft label in the chat list. It potentially negates the need to check each chat individually for any unsent or incomplete message, helping users immediately identify the conversations with unsent or incomplete messages. The feature was first reported in the WhatsApp for iOS beta app version 24.18.10.72 last month for users registered via Apple’s TestFlight program. With the latest version of WhatsApp, it is said to have been widely rolled out to all WhatsApp for iOS users. Furthermore, the instant messaging platform has also rolled out a new widget for the iPhone which brings new ways to sort out the chats from the iPhone’s home screen. Users can now pick chats from different categories such as Recents, Favourites, Pinned or Frequently Contacted. This feature leverages the iOS widget API for real-time data updates and improved system integration. This feature is also rolling out with the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS. Beijing has long clashed with its Southeast ****** neighbours over territory in the South China Sea, which it claims sovereignty over in almost its entirety via a “nine-dash line” on its maps that cuts into the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of several countries. ****** agreements with China in the strategic waterway have for years been sensitive, with some claimant states wary of entering into deals they ***** could be interpreted as legitimising Beijing’s vast claims. An arbitral tribunal in 2016 said the ******** claim, based on its old maps, has no basis under international law, a decision China refuses to recognise. A ****** statement issued at the weekend during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Beijing mentioned the two countries had “reached important common understanding on ****** development in areas of overlapping claims”. NO LEGAL BASIS Indonesia’s foreign ministry has repeatedly claimed the country is a non-claimant state in the South China Sea and that it has no overlapping jurisdiction with China. On Monday, the ministry said its position was unchanged and the agreement would have no impact on its sovereign rights. “Indonesia reiterates its position that those (********) claims have no international legal basis,” it said. “The partnership does not impact sovereignty, sovereign rights or Indonesia’s jurisdiction in the North Natuna Sea.” China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Indonesia’s statement. China’s U-shaped line, based on its old maps, begins off central Vietnam and runs into waters off Indonesia’s Natuna islands, more than 1,000 km (620 miles) south of China’s Hainan island. It crosses into the EEZs of Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, and is patrolled by an armada of ******** coast guard, which has been accused by its neighbours of aggression and of trying to disrupt energy and fisheries activities. China typically says its vessels are preventing incursions into its territory. Indonesia’s foreign ministry said the economic agreement on maritime issues with China included fisheries and fish conservation, and hoped to be a model to safeguard peace and friendship. Some Indonesian analysts, however, said signing such an agreement could have repercussions and be interpreted as a change in stance. “If we refer to the official ****** statement, that means we recognise overlapping claims,” said maritime analyst Aristyo Rizka Darmawan, adding it could compromise Indonesia’s sovereign rights to exploit resources in its EEZ. He said Indonesia may have signed the agreement with the intention of boosting economic relations. Klaus Heinrich Raditio, a lecturer of ******** politics, said Indonesia never had overlapping claims to begin with and including that clause in the statement was “inappropriate”. “This ****** statement puts our national interests at risk,” he said, adding it could still be renegotiated. Gwent Police and 14 ***** crews were called to the scene on Frogmore Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, at about 20:35 GMT on Sunday. The affected building, at the rear of the Magic Cottage charity shop, remained alight on Monday morning but no injuries were reported. A number of nearby residents were evacuated, with Abergavenny Leisure Centre opened up to accommodate those affected and some still unable to return to their homes. Firefighters are using four water bowsers, two aerial ladder platforms, and a high volume pump (HVP) to tackle the flames. A cordon covering Frogmore Street, Regent Street, Princes Street and Baker Street is expected to remain in place for some time. Police urged residents to ensure all windows and doors were closed due to the smoke. Local resident Joe Pugh, said the “air was thick with smoke” in the town centre on Sunday night. “From what I could see it was widespread damage,” he told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. “It was centred around a lovely old row of shops which are well known to residents. If that’s impressive, consider this: The small-cap Russell 2000 surged 8.57%. The markets have Trump to thank for that. “Equities are eager to price in Trump’s domestic growth policies,” Barclays strategist Venu Krishna said in a note to clients. That’s most evident in the outsized bump in the Russell 2000 compared with other indexes. Smaller companies tend to be more tied to the domestic economy, which is the focus of Trump’s pledges. Getty Images Thirteen species of bat inhabit Sheephouse Woods in Buckinghamshire, which border the high-speed rail line The chairman of the HS2 rail line said it was spending £100m on a shield to protect bats in ancient woodland in Buckinghamshire. Sir John Thompson cited it as one example of 8,276 “consents” required from public bodies, and expressed frustration at the ***’s regulations. How did the price tag reach £100m and why do major infrastructure projects become so complicated? Protecting England’s ‘rarest wildlife’ “We are facing a nature crisis with one in six species in the *** now facing extinction. That is why development must be sustainable,” said Oliver Harmar, chief operating officer at Natural England. The government body is tasked with enforcing laws that protect wildlife and the environment. Its role is not to decide whether big infrastructure projects go ahead, but to consult on the plans and ensure that damage to nature is avoided where possible, or compensated for if not. Many species are legally protected, such as badgers, bats and great crested newts, and Natural England has to issue a licence before any work can take place that could harm them. Natural England chairman Tony Juniper previously pointed out it received “a high number of inquiries” about HS2 by people keen on conservation. “Many concerns quite understandably relate to our rarest wildlife and habitats, such as ancient woodland and bats,” he said. Some of the bats benefitting from the one-kilometre long shield are Bechstein’s bats, one of the world’s rarest bat species. Mr Harmar said: “There is ample evidence – despite claims made to the contrary – that they [the bats] are at risk of colliding with high-speed trains.” PA Media The barrier will allow bats to cross the high speed line without being ********** (artist’s impression) ‘Size doubled’ Railway design engineer and author Gareth Dennis, who worked on the HS2 stretch through Calvert in Buckinghamshire, agreed. “Eighteen trains an hour in each direction is a lot of pressure,” he said. “We must protect our biosphere – it is not a zero-sum game,” he added, pointing to a recent report by the Office for National Statistics that valued *** ecosystems at £1.8 trillion. Natural England did not put forward the bat tunnel idea, but agreed that it would work when consulted. A spokesperson for HS2 Ltd said “multiple options” had been considered, including green bridges and restoring habitats, to “comply with laws protecting vulnerable species”. It said through “extensive engagement” with Natural England, “a covered structure was designed”. “Its size has doubled over time, partly due to the need to accommodate future provision for local rail services,” the spokesperson added. Mr Dennis explained that the structure “originally cost £40m, then some wranglings with East West Rail made it a four-track structure and pushed up the cost”. East West Rail is a different project aiming to link Oxford and Cambridge by train. PA Media Badgers are another species that is legally protected by Natural England Planning tussles Natural England is not the only body giving consent to aspects of HS2’s railway. Big infrastructure projects get a Development Consent Order (DCO) from the government, but local authorities are still granted controls over the design of buildings such as viaducts and tunnels. Planning consent can also be required for lorry routes, storing construction materials, communication masts, fences and lighting. HS2 Ltd said it had gone to the Planning Inspectorate to over-rule local authorities on at least 23 occasions – including when Buckinghamshire Council objected to the plan for the bat shield. It also requires consents from the Environment Agency “for water management, excavation below the water table and similar things”. Gavin Pearson, editor of New Civil Engineer, said: “In recent years, achieving a DCO has been taking longer than many think it should. “Good plans have sat waiting for years, which means things like cost projections will be out of date. “If you multiply that same problem for planning processes at local authorities, the implications can be huge.” He said engineering projects could cope with “complex planning rules”, but there was a “growing inability of planning processes to keep pace with applications”. HS2 Ltd HS2 will see high speed trains running between London and Birmingham ‘Ridiculous’ Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and ************* MP for North Cotswolds, said it was “ridiculous” that HS2 had needed to apply for 8,276 separate consents. “It should be a procedure whereby when the project is granted permission, these consents are automatic,” he said. The Local Government Authority, which represents local councils, declined to comment. Peter Martin, Buckinghamshire Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for HS2, said: “Whilst the council wishes to protect species such as Bechstein’s bats, one of the country’s rarest species, it was never supportive of what seemed like extremely excessive costs for a single structure.” He said the council remained “fundamentally opposed to High Speed 2″. “We will continue to work tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the construction of the project on our local communities, environment, and infrastructure, particularly our roads, which are being severely damaged by HS2 construction traffic,” he added. PA Media The bat protection structure will run for 1km over the railway line, costing £100m ‘Tip of the iceberg’ The Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said the £100m bat shield was a “shocking example” of the “complete lack of efficiency” around the rail project, which could cost £66bn in total. As well as legal and planning costs and delays, the spiralling price has been blamed on inflation – especially a rise in the cost of materials such as concrete and steel – and poor forecasting. Ms Haigh said that while she recognises the “importance of meeting legal obligations” there must be a “sensible balance” when it comes to costs. “I have reinstated direct ministerial oversight of the project and will be looking at what other systemic reforms we can put in place to ensure public money is put to good use and not wasted. “Through this tighter control, we will remove barriers that lead to project delays and eye-watering additional costs to taxpayers,” she said. How does the *** compare?Getty Images High speed trains in France tend to run through fewer tunnels and cuttings, according to HS2 Ltd HS2 Ltd said one reason the project costs more in the *** than say France or Spain, which are renowned for high-speed rail, is due to the landscape. “More than half of the HS2 route is either in tunnels (32 miles) or cuttings (44 miles) which are a lot more expensive than building on the surface. ********* railways are generally on the surface,” said a spokesperson. “We also tend to have more environmental mitigations, like the bat structures or green bridges,” they added. However Mr Pearson said although “the *** has had some very high-profile cases of high-cost projects recently, this isn’t unique to the ***”. “Such challenges are quite common around the world, and although specific regulations will reflect different priorities in different countries, complexity is pretty normal now,” he explained.
