The leaker claims that Samuel Roukin, who plays Ghost’s voice, was asked about the possibility while Modern Warfare 2 was being developed. However, there was no proof that Roukin had signed on. According to the leaker, the spin-off would concentrate on Ghost’s life prior to the events of Modern Warfare 2 and provide some insight into how he came to don his trademark mask. These would challenge even the speediest chef, overcooking in a fraction of a second, but they could have applications in medicine and industry. Adam Clancy at University College London and his colleagues created a mixture of flour and formic acid, a common food preservative. They used electrical forces to push this mixture through a hollow needle, which ejected nanofibres just 372 nanometres in diameter – too small to see with the ****** eye. Such slender fibres have been produced from starch extracted from plants before, but Clancy says that process is environmentally harmful. “It’s just: soak in corrosive materials, dissolve it away in water, rinse it, throw it in the river,” he says. The individual strands can be spun into a pasta net Beatrice Britton/Adam Clancy But with a flour mixture that doesn’t happen – you just grind grains to create flour and mix it with formic acid, he says. The resulting “nanopasta” can then be spun into a tiny mat about 2 centimetres across. While it isn’t intended as food, Clancy says that it should be safe to eat, but is reticent to talk about having tried it. “It’s an ethical quandary to talk about scientific self-experimentation,” he says. “But, hypothetically, one might expect it to be chewier than you’d expect.” Clancy believes that a range of other natural raw materials could be even more useful, with desiccated potato – which has a higher starch and lower fibre content than the flour mix – potentially making even better nanofibres. Such material could be woven into bandages that allow air and moisture to pass freely, but keep bacteria out, says Clancy. This technology is purportedly known for its excellent production efficiency, and “…electrically connects three plugs through an optimized follow-up process after three times of plug processes are finished.” “For the process, SK hynix developed a low-stress material while introducing the technology that automatically corrects alignments among the plugs.” SK hynix also uses the same development platform for its 321-layer NAND as its previous generation 238-layer flash, yielding a purported 59% improvement in 321-layer production. Most of the members of this group need to be confirmed by the Senate in order to serve in the roles chosen for them by the president. Cabinet secretaries run the federal government’s departments, serving as their public faces while overseeing implementation of the president’s policies. In those roles, they provide counsel to the president on matters related to the departments they manage. President-elect Donald Trump has announced who he will nominate for many of these top jobs, including secretary of state, but others who will replace President Biden’s Cabinet appear up for grabs. Attorney general Trump announced on Nov. 13 that he’d nominate former Rep. Matt Gaetz to be attorney general, but now he’ll have to select another candidate. Eight days later, Gaetz withdrew from consideration amid a House Ethics Committee investigation into ******* misconduct and obstruction allegations against him. The role is currently held by Merrick Garland, a former federal judge and prosecutor. He said in the announcement that Noem “will work closely with ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan to secure the border.” The Biden administration’s outgoing homeland security secretary is Alejando Mayorkas, who previously served as a deputy secretary of homeland security, and before that, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. What does the secretary of homeland security do? This department is responsible for a broad range of domestic security concerns, with a mandate that includes anti-terrorism, border security and immigration, as well as disaster prevention and management. Trump made immigration and border issues the central focus of his campaign, and has promised to launch a mass deportation effort aimed at removing millions of people from the ******* States. If confirmed, Noem would be the primary Trump Cabinet member coordinating his nationwide effort to deport millions of immigrants — an endeavor that would involve not only various DHS agencies, but also the Justice Department, state and local law enforcement and potentially the Defense Department. The LTV program has the potentially to be very lucrative: The total potential value of the task orders over the next 13 years is $4.6 billion, though the agency has said that due to budgeting concerns, it is only selecting a single provider. Even if the team led by Lunar Outpost, which also includes Leidos, General Motors, Goodyear, and MDA Space, is not selected by NASA, Cyrus said the company plans on proceeding with rover development. “Lunar Outpost Eagle is our flagship vehicle and will be the backbone of outposts on other planetary bodies,” he said in an emailed statement. “Our company has been focused on mobility since inception and the lunar terrain vehicle has accelerated our truly industry leading capabilities which unlock a sustainable presence on the moon and Mars.” The startup also closed a Series A round for an undisclosed amount last month to support several initiatives, including the rover development. Today, November 21, 2024, marks the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo DS‘ launch in North America. It’s hard for me to believe it’s been that long, because Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld device defined my childhood more than any other device. While I started my gaming journey on the original Xbox and Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo DS is what truly made me fall in love with video games. It was an innovative piece of technology that drew my attention in ways none of my other childhood toys could. These were formative gaming experiences that I’ll always remember. Now almost old enough to vote, the Nintendo DS can be considered a retro gaming handheld. It deserves the same level of reverence that’s usually given to formative systems like the NES or ***** Genesis. With that in mind, let’s look back at what made this system so special to me and millions of others. Innovative hardware When it comes to gaming technology, Nintendo always finds ways to be ahead of the curve — at least in terms of creativity. The Nintendo DS is one of the greatest examples of that strength, as it popularized the idea of a touchscreen (and touchscreen gaming) years before modern smartphones became commonplace. As a child, opening the system up and using its stylus gave the DS a tactile feel that no other system could offer. I remember spending countless hours in PictoChat with my brother and other friends who had DS systems. I also appreciated its Game Boy Advance compatibility, which meant I didn’t have to leave that gaming library of mine behind. Looking at all of the gaming platforms I owned before I started writing about the industry professionally, the Nintendo DS is certainly the one I played the most. Digital Trends The appeal of the DS can also be seen in its longevity. With all the updates and variations this console received, I owned around four different DS systems when all was said and done. It’s a branding Nintendo built on further with the 3DS, another handheld I adore and own multiple versions of. As video game technology gets increasingly homogenized, the DS is a reminder of a creativity-driven era where a gaming device could offer a radically different look and playing experience than any other platform. Amazing games It’s the games that make or break a system, though, and the DS is full of classics. Two series defined my time with the Nintendo DS: Super Mario Bros. and Pokémon. I got my first taste of both on Game Boy Advance, but I genuinely became a fan of both on DS. Super Mario 64 DS, a launch title I remember getting around the same time as the system itself, is the definitive version of Nintendo’s seminal 3D platformer. Even if it lacks full analog control, it’s a technical marvel that Nintendo got this it running better on a DS just eight years after the original’s release. And while the New Super Mario Bros. series gets a lot of flak nowadays, the first game to bear that name is a truly creative platformer full of memorable levels that mesmerized my younger self. I got so good at New Super Mario Bros. that I remember playing through a level without dying when my eyes were dilated at an eye doctor appointment (I also think its multiplayer mode is highly underrated). Nintendo I’ve played no video game series more than Pokémon, though, and the games I’ve played the most were all on Nintendo DS. I remember going to Target with my dad to buy Pokémon Platinum, getting the last copy on the shelf, walking out of the store, and hearing other kids bummed out that they couldn’t pick a copy up. That memory stuck with me, and I’ve spent hundreds of hours in the Sinnoh region since then. To this day, most of my favorite Pokémon can be found in Platinum. In 2011, Pokémon ****** and White brought me back to the series. The DS-era Pokémon titles struck a perfect balance of gameplay depth, memorable monster designs, and strong technical performance. While I believe that the Pokémon games that came after, like X and Y or Sword and Shield, are underrated, there’s no denying that the franchise peaked on DS. I’m happy to have been at the epicenter of that. Undeniable impact Looking at my gaming tastes today, I see how they were all fundamentally shaped by the DS. I will always be interested in picking up a new Mario platformer or Pokémon RPG on day one because of how those series ingrained themselves in me on this Nintendo handheld. I appreciate gaming technology that tries to be innovative or stand out from the competition in distinct ways, likely because I appreciated how the DS did that. The technology exists to emulate DS games, but so many of them utilize the touchscreen in distinct enough ways that they just don’t feel quite right to play on any other platform. Twenty years after its original release, Nintendo has completely left the DS brand behind after shutting down online play on the 3DS. Enough time has passed for us to truly look back and understand the impact the Nintendo DS had not just on the video game industry, but on us individually. As the idea of the DS makes the jump from contemporary to retro, I’m grateful that I can still boot up my DS systems and play Super Mario 64 DS or Pokémon Platinum anytime I want and remember why I adore video games in the first place. Gensler took over the SEC in 2021, and under his leadership the commission has taken an ambitious but controversial approach to several regulatory issues, including cryptocurrencies. Trump has not announced his pick to lead the SEC, but the expectation is that the next chair will be friendlier to Wall Street and crypto. SEC commissioners serve five-year terms, so Gensler could have in theory stayed on until at least 2026. The citadel’s Cyclopean walls—3m thick and spanning nearly 3km in circumference—encompassed a space far larger than any other Mycenaean site in Greece. Even more impressive, Gla oversaw a transformative engineering project that drained Lake Kopais (sometimes spelled Kopaida), the then largest lake in Greece, creating a vast agricultural plain. For modern travelers, Gla offers a rare glimpse into the world Homer referred to as the “Age of Heroes,” immortalized in the Iliad and the Odyssey. A two-hour drive northwest from Athens, the site is an ideal destination for a weekend excursion from the capital, meandering through the rolling Viotian countryside. Today, the citadel of Gla is at the heart of a major revitalization project led by the Greek Ministry of Culture, aimed at preserving the site and enhancing its appeal to visitors. But a new study has refuted this claim and argues that, in fact, there was likely a spike in population size around the second half of the 6th century AD, and thus the plague and climate change had limited impact. Primary Movers of Change: Not Climate and ******** This new study, published in the journal Klio by researchers Haggai Olshanetsky, from the University of Warsaw, and Lev Cosijns, from the University of Oxford carefully analyses available archaeological evidence, data from settlements, shipwrecks, and trade patterns in the Mediterranean. They posit that human and military factors, including Persian invasions and Islamic expansion in the 7th century, were the primary movers of change. Agriculture, the base economy of most empires like this one, was thus not as affected by LLIA as was erroneously thought, relying on selected textual evidence, and archaeological evidence outside of the boundaries of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. In fact, the researchers suggest that agriculture and commercial activity could actually have both been maintained and increased in the eastern Mediterranean area, which a lot of previously considered sources have conveniently not consulted. The researchers write in the paper: “Why do empires fall? This is one of the questions that fascinate many, both in academia and among the general public. In the search for an answer, emotions are high, and imagination can run wild. Human intervention, mostly in the form of war, is commonly attributed to the decline of empires. Up until 40 years ago, historical research was oriented to this line of thinking. However, in recent decades, new suggestions have emerged that attributed the rise and fall of empires to climate and ********”. (Josse Lieferinxe/Public domain) Irrefutable Evidence: Analyzing Genetics, Trade, Pottery, Population In fact, there are minor outbreaks mentioned by reputable sources in this *******; other sources point to how studies conducted on the genetics of the plague show that it arrived in Europe much earlier than previously believed, co-existing with the population. Looking at trade, they analyzed shipwrecks from the Mediterranean at Marseille, Naples, Carthage, eastern Spain, and Alexandria. At some point in the second half of the 7th century, Roman ships, which lined the shores by the hundreds, started disappearing. Roman goods from this ******* across *******, Tunisia, Jordan, Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece point to a prosperity and flow of trade still very much intact. In fact, there seemed to be an increase in prosperity and demography – witnessed with a rise in the number of settlements, after the 550s. The information “led us to conclude that the eastern Roman Empire started to decline … after a [disruption in trade] and military failures,” Cosijns and Olshanetsky told The Daily Mail. The researchers also considered 16,000 pieces of pottery uncovered in Nessana, southwest Negev (Judea), bordering modern-day Egypt. The trade of pottery flourished during the late 6th and early 7th centuries – in fact, there was a ‘stark increase’ after 550 AD, reflective of an ‘increase in the industrial capacity and prosperity of the region.’ The final piece of analysis was one of the in-depth case studies of Elusa, also in the Negev Desert. Previous studies had alleged that an abandonment of municipal dumps here was indicative of social collapse – the dating of trash seems to be limited and not representative of a whole set. There was likely a gradual decline in stability and the socio-economic fabric slowly eroded over the invasions from Persia, and the general expansion of the Islamic sultanates. A slow fragmentation of trade activity and disruption in agricultural practices confirms this. “We think that looking for climate change and plague as the cause for every significant change in history is problematic. This approach can especially harm the current climate change debate when claiming that past climate change caused catastrophic disruptions in society, in cases when there were none or limited effects. Such claims may inadvertently support arguments that state since climate change has always occurred, the current man-made one is not a serious issue”, the researchers conclude. So when we watch some random guy pull up to the nightmare baby and ***** it with a single parry, it feels like a healing balm on a wound long unattended. People Are One-Shotting Bloodborne’s Orphan of Kos Now With Ease The Orphan staring up at the sky mournfully – Image Credit: FromSoftware. Back when Bloodborne was arguably the best and most challenging gaming experience that FromSoftware had created, Orphan of Kos was the one boss to ****** just about every hunter’s brain out there in half. The problem with the guy was that it was designed to punish at the slightest hint of defense or hesitation. It was a fair ******—don’t get us wrong—but ******** if it wasn’t a jump in difficulty the likes of which we just weren’t prepared for. You know, in the first phase, the ****** seems easy enough. The Orphan gives you enough parry windows, and even its plunging ******* leaves him susceptible to backstabs if you can dodge forward in time. But the moment the second phase begins, the difficulty gets cranked up to infinity, with the parentless menace growing faster, stronger, and more unrelenting. It swings its placenta with reckless abandon and summons near-unavoidable lightning AoEs at every chance it gets. As far back as we can remember, this was the first boss in Bloodborne that almost made it mandatory to use every trick and buff that we could gather just to stand a fighting chance, and even then, almost always, it felt as though you barely survived the ******. But why are we talking about this ****** all these years later and in such great detail? Well, just look at the following clip, and you’ll know exactly why: Back when we all first encountered the boss, it felt like a Souls game was truly testing your growth, patience, reflexes, and determination all in one ******. So, when we watch someone one-shot it the way OP did above, even with all sorts of buffs like the Poorman’s Gems, Clawmark Runes, and a good old Trick threaded can, it just feels so liberating, as though some side of us still stuck in the battle all those years ago has finally been given peace. More importantly, though, it reminds us why Orphan of Kos is still one of the best and toughest fights FromSoftware has ever crafted and how we all continue to “git gud” with each new game. Fast-forward nearly a decade, and Elden Ring’s bosses have basically taken the Souls formula’s bosses to unbelievable new heights. Whether it be Maliketh’s Destined ****** attacks and unpredictability, Elden ******’s golden tracers, or Consort Radahn’s pillars of light, all of them push the players to their absolute limits. However, few fights within the series feel as raw, brutal, and yet fair as our ****** with the Orphan of Kos. Not that the new bosses are bad or anything—all of them have things to like about them and are incredible in their own ways—but the way the Orphan just stays in your face the entire time, attacking in this unpredictable and relentless rhythm, it just feels pure, visceral, and simply different. Even after all these years, there aren’t many bosses who can perfectly match Orphan’s storm of aggression, rage, and despair. It never needed any flashy moves or some hail-mary type of *******; its placenta and lore were enough to make us back off and rethink our approach. This was, at the end of the day, an appreciation post of sorts for the sheer nightmarish challenge that Orphan posed to us all those years ago. Though some of the newer bosses may have one-shot moves or some truly cinematic attacks, that child is still one of the best and will forever remain unforgettable.
