Trudeau floats ‘other options’ if Mexico won’t address China trade concerns – National Trudeau floats ‘other options’ if Mexico won’t address China trade concerns – National Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday he would prefer Mexico remain a North ********* free trade partner but “we may have to look at other options” if the country doesn’t address concerns about ******** manufacturers working to wedge into the market. Trudeau said he raised the “real and genuine concerns about ******** investment into Mexico” directly with ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum in a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 leaders’ summit in Brazil on Monday. Those concerns have led some ********* premiers to call for Canada to strike its own bilateral deal with the U.S. under incoming president-elect Donald Trump, cutting Mexico out of the Canada-******* States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The prime minister said his first priority will be to stand up for ********* workers and the ********* economy, and that Ottawa was “leaving all doors open” to secure those interests. “Ideally, we do that as a ******* North ********* market,” he told reporters at an unrelated press conference in Toronto. “But, pending decisions and choices that Mexico has made, we may have to look at other options.” He would not say what those options might be. Story continues below advertisement “But let me just say it again: my ideal situation is we continue to work well together to protect jobs in North America from overcapacity or economic coercion that other countries have been responsible for.” Sheinbaum told reporters in Mexico City on Wednesday that Trudeau “doesn’t agree” with the calls to cut Mexico out of CUSMA, and that during their meeting at the G20 they agreed on maintaining a three-way trade deal. But she also said she told ******** President Xi Jinping at the summit “that we have a trade agreement with North America, but that there was room for a relationship with China, which was very important.” 1:33 ‘We’ve been here before’: Trudeau says Canada is prepared to renegotiate CUSMA Ontario Premier Doug Ford said last week that Mexico is “importing cheap products” from China, then “slapping a made-in-Mexico sticker on and shipping it up” into Canada and the U.S., bypassing both CUSMA rules and ********* and ********* tariffs on ******** vehicles. Ford claimed Wednesday after a call with his fellow premiers that they all backed his demand for separate bilateral trade deals with the U.S. and Mexico. Trump has vowed to reopen CUSMA to address the issue when the trade pact is up for review in 2026. He railed during the campaign about ******** automakers building manufacturing plants in Mexico, which is not currently happening, although China’s top EV maker BYD has plans for a ******** facility. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday that she shares the “legitimate” concerns about ******** investment in Mexico, and the fact Mexico has yet to align with ********* and U.S. tariffs on ******** electric vehicles and materials like steel and aluminum. She said the concerns have been raised to her directly by both members of the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden and the incoming Trump administration. “We are not a ********* to ******** unfair traded goods,” Freeland said Tuesday. “However, the same cannot be said of Mexico.” 2:03 Canada needs to have ‘predictable’ relationship with China, Joly says A report by the ******* States Trade Representative earlier this year warned that U.S. industry stakeholders “expressed concerns that increasing ******** foreign direct investment in the automotive sector in Mexico poses a significant threat to the competitiveness of the North ********* auto industry” and could allow China to skirt tariffs. More on Politics More videos Deputy ******** Foreign Trade Minister Luis Rosendo Gutierrez last month said Mexico would continue to prioritize the U.S. and Canada due to their strategic alliance through CUSMA, but that did not imply Mexico would “break with China” or “deny them investments in Mexico.” CUSMA’s rules of origin clause requires higher levels of North ********* parts in vehicles sold in the three countries compared with NAFTA, which Trump has said China is also trying to exploit by bringing ******** components through Mexico. Trump, who has vowed a blanket 10 per cent tariff on all foreign imports, has said ******** imports could see a 25 per cent levy if the country doesn’t stem the flow of migrants arriving at the U.S. border. 3. 20 years later, the Nintendo DS ******** one of gaming’s best devices 20 years later, the Nintendo DS ******** one of gaming’s best devices It’s a special day. Today, November 21, 2024, marks the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo DS‘ launch in North America. It’s hard for me to believe it’s been that long, because Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld device defined my childhood more than any other device. While I started my gaming journey on the original Xbox and Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo DS is what truly made me fall in love with video games. It was an innovative piece of technology that drew my attention in ways none of my other childhood toys could. These were formative gaming experiences that I’ll always remember. Now almost old enough to vote, the Nintendo DS can be considered a retro gaming handheld. It deserves the same level of reverence that’s usually given to formative systems like the NES or ***** Genesis. With that in mind, let’s look back at what made this system so special to me and millions of others. Innovative hardware When it comes to gaming technology, Nintendo always finds ways to be ahead of the curve — at least in terms of creativity. The Nintendo DS is one of the greatest examples of that strength, as it popularized the idea of a touchscreen (and touchscreen gaming) years before modern smartphones became commonplace. As a child, opening the system up and using its stylus gave the DS a tactile feel that no other system could offer. I remember spending countless hours in PictoChat with my brother and other friends who had DS systems. I also appreciated its Game Boy Advance compatibility, which meant I didn’t have to leave that gaming library of mine behind. Looking at all of the gaming platforms I owned before I started writing about the industry professionally, the Nintendo DS is certainly the one I played the most. Digital Trends The appeal of the DS can also be seen in its longevity. With all the updates and variations this console received, I owned around four different DS systems when all was said and done. It’s a branding Nintendo built on further with the 3DS, another handheld I adore and own multiple versions of. As video game technology gets increasingly homogenized, the DS is a reminder of a creativity-driven era where a gaming device could offer a radically different look and playing experience than any other platform. Amazing games It’s the games that make or break a system, though, and the DS is full of classics. Two series defined my time with the Nintendo DS: Super Mario Bros. and Pokémon. I got my first taste of both on Game Boy Advance, but I genuinely became a fan of both on DS. Super Mario 64 DS, a launch title I remember getting around the same time as the system itself, is the definitive version of Nintendo’s seminal 3D platformer. Even if it lacks full analog control, it’s a technical marvel that Nintendo got this it running better on a DS just eight years after the original’s release. And while the New Super Mario Bros. series gets a lot of flak nowadays, the first game to bear that name is a truly creative platformer full of memorable levels that mesmerized my younger self. I got so good at New Super Mario Bros. that I remember playing through a level without dying when my eyes were dilated at an eye doctor appointment (I also think its multiplayer mode is highly underrated). Nintendo I’ve played no video game series more than Pokémon, though, and the games I’ve played the most were all on Nintendo DS. I remember going to Target with my dad to buy Pokémon Platinum, getting the last copy on the shelf, walking out of the store, and hearing other kids bummed out that they couldn’t pick a copy up. That memory stuck with me, and I’ve spent hundreds of hours in the Sinnoh region since then. To this day, most of my favorite Pokémon can be found in Platinum. In 2011, Pokémon ****** and White brought me back to the series. The DS-era Pokémon titles struck a perfect balance of gameplay depth, memorable monster designs, and strong technical performance. While I believe that the Pokémon games that came after, like X and Y or Sword and Shield, are underrated, there’s no denying that the franchise peaked on DS. I’m happy to have been at the epicenter of that. Undeniable impact Looking at my gaming tastes today, I see how they were all fundamentally shaped by the DS. I will always be interested in picking up a new Mario platformer or Pokémon RPG on day one because of how those series ingrained themselves in me on this Nintendo handheld. I appreciate gaming technology that tries to be innovative or stand out from the competition in distinct ways, likely because I appreciated how the DS did that. Giovanni Colantonio / Digital Trends And it’s an experience that will always be locked closely to my childhood. It’s hard to recreate that experience on a different platform. The technology exists to emulate DS games, but so many of them utilize the touchscreen in distinct enough ways that they just don’t feel quite right to play on any other platform. The Nintendo DS is a system you really had to be there for to understand its heyday. Twenty years after its original release, Nintendo has completely left the DS brand behind after shutting down online play on the 3DS. Enough time has passed for us to truly look back and understand the impact the Nintendo DS had not just on the video game industry, but on us individually. As the idea of the DS makes the jump from contemporary to retro, I’m grateful that I can still boot up my DS systems and play Super Mario 64 DS or Pokémon Platinum anytime I want and remember why I adore video games in the first place. Piper Sandler highlights the stocks most likely to benefit from bullish market sentiment Piper Sandler highlights the stocks most likely to benefit from bullish market sentiment Wall Street’s optimistic tone since Donald Trump secured a return to the White House could have outsized benefits for a handful of stocks that typically gain when sentiment is bullish, according to Piper Sandler. Stocks soared to record highs immediately after Trump’s victory in early November. Investors hoped that his election would lead to ******* regulations, which could trigger a spree of dealmaking on Wall Street, as well as lower corporate taxes. The postelection rally has broadened out in recent days toward stocks outside of the “Magnificent Seven.” “By many metrics, bullish sentiment is at an extreme,” Michael Kantrowitz, Piper Sandler’s chief investment strategist and head of portfolio strategy, wrote in a Tuesday note. “Investors expect the market to climb higher and accordingly, Wall Street expects the data to improve (cooling inflation, rising housing activity, rising industrial production, etc.).” In addition to those factors, Kantrowitz cited data that showed that recession fears have eased, and there is an expectation that oil prices will fall or remain low. Also, interest rates should continue to drift lower. Against this backdrop, Piper Sandler screened for stocks that are most sensitive to bullish sentiment. Their methodology tracks the performance of stocks against various macro variables to find the greatest correlations over a five-year *******. Here’s a look at some of the stocks that made the list. 5. SEC Chair Gary Gensler will step down Jan. 20, making way for Trump replacement SEC Chair Gary Gensler will step down Jan. 20, making way for Trump replacement U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler testifies before a House Financial Services Committee oversight hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. September 27, 2023. Jonathan Ernst | Reuters Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler will resign on Jan. 20, the agency announced Thursday, paving the way for President-elect Donald Trump to select a replacement immediately. Gensler took over the SEC in 2021, and under his leadership the commission has taken an ambitious but controversial approach to several regulatory issues, including cryptocurrencies. Trump has not announced his pick to lead the SEC, but the expectation is that the next chair will be friendlier to Wall Street and crypto. SEC commissioners serve five-year terms, so Gensler could have in theory stayed on until at least 2026. Instead, he is leaving the agency completely, as was widely expected. “The staff and the Commission are deeply mission-driven, focused on protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and ensuring that the markets work for investors and issuers alike. The staff comprises true public servants. It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve with them on behalf of everyday Americans and ensure that our capital markets remain the best in the world,” Gensler said in a press release. Under Gensler, the SEC pushed to require more disclosures from publicly traded companies and financial advisors for investors. Those new areas of disclosure include risk around climate change and cybersecurity. The agency also sped-up settlement times for stock trades to just one day, a change spurred in part by the meme-stock trading in early 2021. Gensler’s SEC has had several high profile disputes with the crypto industry, including a legal ****** with Grayscale to block bitcoin ETFs. Grayscale won in court, and billions of dollars have flowed into those new funds since they launched in January. The SEC sued several large digital asset companies in recent years over how they were handling or selling crypto, including Coinbase, with mixed results. The SEC has also been at odds with Tesla CEO Elon Musk in recent years, including investigating him for potential ****** surrounding his $44 billion purchase of social media company Twitter, now known as X, in 2022. The agency is currently seeking sanctions against Musk after he skipped a court-ordered testimony in that probe. Under Gensler, the SEC has investigated whether Musk is in compliance with an earlier settlement agreement that required the billionaire CEO to have a securities lawyer review some of his social media posts about Tesla before sharing them. Musk, who has been publicly critical of the SEC, campaigned with Trump and is set to work with the new administration as co-head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. Trump could have the opportunity to quickly reshape the SEC. In addition to Gensler’s soon-to-be vacant seat, the terms for two of the other four commissioners expire in either 2024 or 2025. Commissioners can serve up to 18 months beyond the end of their term. Presidential appointments to the SEC are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. — CNBC’s Lora Kolodny contributed reporting. 6. Star Wars Outlaws just fixed those maddening stealth missions Star Wars Outlaws just fixed those maddening stealth missions Happy days. Massive and Ubisoft have listened to the complaints and with Star Wars Outlaws. Players know what I’m talking about. It’s those mind-numbing stealth missions that automatically fail as soon as someone is spotted. A new patch lets the game continue, even after being caught, so players can try to ****** their way out of a situation. The developers say this change was instituted to give players a decision as to whether they prefer stealth or combat in any given scenario. Drew Rechner, Creative Director on Star Wars Outlaws, notes that the dev team has removed “forced stealth from almost all quest objectives.” However, stealth is still an option for any of these objectives. It’s just not required. “Star Wars Outlaws represents to us a true scoundrel experience and as Kay and Nix are street thieves by trade, stealth will always be an option for players that prefer that playstyle,” the devs wrote in a blog post. “We heard your feedback, and we’re implementing changes that allow for greater player freedom and embracing more playstyles.” The update also improves detection mechanics while operating in stealth mode, as the pre-existing ****** AI “could be unpredictable and inconsistent.” Now players will be able to choose stealth, action or, of course, a combination of both. My preferred method will be stealth until I get caught, which should happen approximately five seconds after entering a compound. Today’s build expands player choice in other ways beyond removing forced stealth objectives. Players can now pick up and keep weapons for longer periods of time in the field, and the developers have added “more opportunities to use them in various scenarios.” Combat has also gotten another update, as players will now be able to target additional ****** body parts beyond the head for “exploiting weak points.” Update 1.4 even includes some slight graphical upgrades, thanks to a refined camera system that improves the focus. To accompany today’s update, Ubisoft has dropped some story DLC called Wild Card. Everyone’s favorite villain-turned-hero Lando Calrissian is a major player in this expansion. Star Wars Outlaws , but Massive and Ubisoft have been busy improving the game since launch. The game now features , with a complete overhaul of the stats of various weapons and enemies. 7. Bluesky CEO Jay Graber says X rival is ‘billionaire proof’ Bluesky CEO Jay Graber says X rival is ‘billionaire proof’ Bluesky has surged in popularity since the presidential election earlier this month, suddenly becoming a competitor to Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Threads. But CEO Jay Graber has some cautionary words for potential acquirers: Bluesky is “billionaire proof.” In an interview on Thursday with CNBC’s “Money Movers,” Graber said Bluesky’s open design is intended to give users the option of leaving the service with all of their followers, which could thwart potential acquisition efforts. “The billionaire proof is in the way everything is designed, and so if someone bought or if the Bluesky company went down, everything is open source,” Graber said. “What happened to Twitter couldn’t happen to us in the same ways, because you would always have the option to immediately move without having to start over.” Graber was referring to the way millions of users left Twitter, now X, after Musk purchased the company in 2022. Bluesky now has over 21 million users, still dwarfed by X and Threads, which Facebook’s parent debuted in July 2023. X and Meta didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Threads has roughly 275 million monthly users, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in October. Although Musk said in May that X has 600 million monthly users, market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates 318 million monthly users as of October. Bluesky was created in 2019 as an internal Twitter project during Jack Dorsey’s second stint as CEO, and became an independent public benefit corporation in 2022. In May of this year, Dorsey said he is no longer a member of Bluesky’s board. “In 2019, Jack had a vision for something better for social media, and so that’s why he chose me to build this, and we’re really thankful for him for setting this up, and we’ve continued to carry this out,” said Graber, who previously founded Happening, a social network focused on events. “We’re building an open-source social network that anyone can take into their own hands and build on, and it’s something that is radically different from anything that’s been done in social media before. Nobody’s been this open, this transparent and put this much control in the users hands.” Part of Bluesky’s business plan involves offering subscriptions that would let users access special features, Graber noted. She also said that Bluesky will add more services for third-party coders as part of the startup’s “developer ecosystem.” Graber said Bluesky has ruled out the possibility of letting advertisers send algorithmically recommended ads to users. “There’s a lot on the road map, and I’ll tell you what we’re not going to do for monetization,” Graber said. “We’re not going to build an algorithm that just shoves ads at you, locking users in. That’s not our model.” Bluesky has previously experienced major growth spurts. In September, it added 2 million users following X’s suspension in Brazil over content moderation policy violations in the country and related legal matters. In October, Bluesky announced that it raised $15 million in a funding round led by Blockchain Capital. The company has raised a total of $36 million, according to Pitchbook. 9. Elon Musk’s Neuralink Cleared to Start Brain Chip Trial in Canada Elon Musk’s Neuralink Cleared to Start Brain Chip Trial in Canada Canada’s University Health Network said its Toronto Western Hospital would be the first non-US site of a trial for a device created by Neuralink Corp., Elon Musk’s brain-implant company. “We are incredibly proud to be at the forefront of this research advancement in neurosurgery,” UHN Chief Executive Officer Kevin Smith said in an announcement. He also said UHN would be the “first and exclusive” site for the trial in Canada, but did not say when it would begin. On Wednesday, Neuralink said that it had received approval from regulators in Canada to launch clinical trials for its device in that country. “Health Canada has approved the launch of our first clinical trial in Canada!” the company posted on X, the social media service also owned by Musk. “Recruitment is now open.” Neuralink added that it was seeking patients with Quadriplegia due to ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s ********, or spinal cord injury. Health Canada didn’t immediately provide a comment. For months, Neuralink has been recruiting patients in the US, *** and Canada, with links to a registry on its website. Other companies in the field, such as Synchron Inc., are recruiting for their own future trials. Neuralink’s first product aims to allow patients to control external devices, such as computers, through their thoughts. Neuralink is also working on treating other conditions such as blindness, but that project is further away. In the distant future, Musk has said Neuralink could work with healthy patients on functions such as augmenting memory. 10. Essex Police taking no further action against Allison Pearson Essex Police taking no further action against Allison Pearson Essex Police says it is not taking any further action against Allison Pearson after an investigation into a social media post by the Daily Telegraph columnist. The investigation has been closed, but there will be an independent review of the force’s handling of the matter, a police statement said. The force previously defended its actions after Pearson said she was left “dumbstruck” by a visit to her home on Remembrance Sunday. The visit was to arrange a time to do an interview as part of an investigation into alleged incitement to ******* hatred, following a complaint from a member of the public, the force said. Essex Police said in a statement that the force “has reviewed this case, having sought advice from the Crown Prosecution Service. They have advised that no charges should be brought. We have concluded therefore that there will be no further action.” The force said Chief Constable BJ Harrington asked the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s Hate ****** Lead Chief Constable Mark Hobrough “to conduct an independent review of the force’s handling of this matter and he has agreed”. “We investigate ******* reported to us without ***** or favour,” an Essex Police spokesperson said. “We’re sometimes faced with allegations of ****** where people have strong opposing views. That’s why we work so hard to remain impartial and to investigate allegations, regardless of where they might lead.” Pearson publicised the visit from police after she penned an article in which she claimed she was told by the police who came to her home it was over a “non-****** hate incident”, but not told which post it was about. The force said body cam footage of the incident showed that “at no stage” did its officers tell her the report being investigated was being treated as a “non-****** hate incident”. A non-****** hate incident is where no ********* offence has been committed but the person reporting it believes the incident to be motivated by hostility. The BBC has seen the now-deleted post the police complaint related to. It dates from 16 November 2023 and shows an image of two police officers standing next to two men holding what appears to be a flag of the Pakistani political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The post tags the Metropolitan Police alongside the words “how dare they”. It adds: “Invited to pose for a photo with lovely peaceful British Friends of ******* on Saturday police refused. Look at this lot smiling with the **** haters.” X added a notice to the post stating that the image was taken in Manchester, not London, and that it is “not related to Palestine”. A number of political figures came out in support of Pearson, including shadow home secretary Chris Philp and former prime minister Boris Johnson – sparking a debate around free speech. Responding to the debate, Essex Police previously said it supports free speech but “it does not support inaccuracy”. “If an alleged ****** is reported, it is investigated. There is no public interest in falsehood.” Source link #Essex #Police #action #Allison #Pearson Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  12. Solar Orbiter Sends High-Resolution Images of Sun’s Surface, Unveiling New Details Solar Orbiter Sends High-Resolution Images of Sun’s Surface, Unveiling New Details The ********* Space Agency’s (ESA) Solar Orbiter spacecraft has delivered the most detailed images of the sun’s surface to date. These images, taken in March 2023 from a distance of approximately 74 million kilometres, were released on November 20. They provide unprecedented insights into the photosphere, the layer of the sun responsible for emitting visible light. The photos reveal the intricate and dynamic patterns of granules—plasma cells roughly 1,000 kilometres wide—formed by convection as hot plasma rises and cooler plasma sinks. Sunspot Activity and Magnetic Fields Analysed The images highlight sunspots as cooler, darker regions on the photosphere, where intense magnetic fields disrupt the movement of plasma. The Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on board the Solar Orbiter produced detailed maps of these magnetic fields, identifying their significant concentration in sunspot regions. According to Daniel Müller, ESA Project Scientist for Solar Orbiter, these observations are essential for understanding the sun’s dynamic processes. The sunspots appear colder because magnetic forces restrict normal convection, causing a decrease in surface temperature. New Data on Solar Rotation and Winds A velocity map, known as a tachogram, has also been shared, illustrating the speed and direction of material movement on the sun’s surface. Blue regions represent plasma moving towards the spacecraft, while red areas show plasma moving away, revealing the sun’s rotational dynamics. Additionally, magnetic fields in sunspot regions were seen to disrupt the surface material further. The sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, was imaged by the spacecraft’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager. Plasma loops protruding from the sun, visible in these images, are connected to sunspots and contribute to the solar wind. This solar wind, when reaching Earth, often results in auroral displays. Future Missions to Study Solar Poles The Solar Orbiter, launched in 2020 as a ****** mission with NASA, aims to capture unprecedented views of the sun’s poles. These observations are scheduled for 2025, when the spacecraft’s orbit will align for a direct perspective. The recent imaging involved the assembly of 25 smaller images, a complex process now expected to accelerate for future releases. 13. Gla: The Forgotten Fortress of Mycenaean Greece Gla: The Forgotten Fortress of Mycenaean Greece Nestled in the fertile plains of Viotia (Boeotia) in central Greece ***** a colossal fortress that, despite its impressive size, ******** largely unknown to the wider public. The Mycenaean-era citadel of Gla, perched atop a limestone outcrop in what was once Lake Kopais, is a marvel of Late Bronze Age engineering, boasting fortifications ten times larger than those of contemporary Athens or Tiryns. And yet, beyond the niche circles of archaeologists and prehistorians, precious few people have heard of it. Visiting this extraordinary site is well worth the journey. Referred to by locals as Palaiokastro, meaning “ancient fortress,” Gla’s story is one of ambition, ingenuity, and mystery, embodying the innovative spirit of the Bronze Age Mycenaean culture that flourished in Greece and across the southern Aegean over 3,000 years ago. The citadel’s Cyclopean walls—3m thick and spanning nearly 3km in circumference—encompassed a space far larger than any other Mycenaean site in Greece. Even more impressive, Gla oversaw a transformative engineering project that drained Lake Kopais (sometimes spelled Kopaida), the then largest lake in Greece, creating a vast agricultural plain. For modern travelers, Gla offers a rare glimpse into the world Homer referred to as the “Age of Heroes,” immortalized in the Iliad and the Odyssey. A two-hour drive northwest from Athens, the site is an ideal destination for a weekend excursion from the capital, meandering through the rolling Viotian countryside. Combine a visit to Gla with a stop at Thebes, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, where the recently refurbished Archaeological Museum showcases remarkable finds from the region, including artifacts from Gla itself. Nearby, the picturesque towns of Livadia and Arachova, famed for their charm and proximity to Mount Parnassos, offer additional opportunities to explore and unwind. Sideview of one of the towers of the SE gate. Sideview of one of the towers of the SE gate. The Breadbasket of Mycenaean Greece Rising 38 meters above the plain, Gla occupies a triangular limestone plateau, commanding the surrounding landscape. Its size is astonishing: the citadel spans 23.5 hectares (235,000 square meters), dwarfing the 3.1 hectares enclosed by the walls of Mycenae. Built around 1300 BC during the Late Helladic III B *******, Gla was central to a grand Mycenaean project to reclaim the lakebed of Lake Copais, a natural body of water with fertile soils ideal for agriculture. The Mycenaeans achieved this feat through a sophisticated hydraulic system, including over 50 kilometers of canals and dams that diverted water from the Cephissus and Melas rivers into natural sinkholes and then on to the Evian Gulf. This ambitious endeavor turned the lakebed into a vast fertile plain, capable of supporting extensive farming and herding. Scholars believe Gla’s strategic position at the eastern edge of the reclaimed plain made it an administrative hub for managing the cultivation and storage of wheat, barley, and olives—staples that would have sustained the wider Mycenaean economy. The system’s ingenuity, however, could not withstand the collapse of the Mycenaean palace-centered civilization around 1200 BC. As the hydraulic works fell into disrepair, Lake Copais gradually returned, swallowing the once dry plain by Classical antiquity (c. 500 BC). After two ******* attempts in the Roman *******, the lake was eventually drained again in the late 19th century by the British Lake Copais Company, echoing the Mycenaean innovation over 3,000 years earlier. An aerial view of the L-shaped building, often described as a “palace.” © Millerium / An aerial view of the L-shaped building, often described as a “palace.” © Millerium / Mighty Walls, Empty Spaces Gla’s imposing Cyclopean masonry shields a vast interior that is strikingly sparse compared to the densely constructed palace complexes of Mycenae or Tiryns. Uniquely, Gla features four gates—north, west, south, and southeast—suggesting a need for both defense and accessibility. Within its walls, archaeologists have identified only a handful of permanent structures, including an L-shaped building in the north of the site, often referred to as a “palace,” though its exact function is debated. Rows of rooms in the so-called “agora” may have served as workshops, barracks, or storage facilities. The discovery of large quantities of carbonized grain in one building, likely burned during the site’s destruction, sometime around 1200 BC, supports the theory that Gla functioned as a storage center for agricultural surplus generated by the reclaimed Copais plain. One of the best-known finds from the site is the preserved ******** of a wall frieze known as the “Dolphins of Gla,” unearthed in the agora and now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Thebes. Other discoveries, including storage jars and figurines, hint at a complex and organized settlement, though much about Gla’s purpose ******** shrouded in mystery. Was it primarily a military garrison, a regional administrative center, or an agricultural stronghold? The evidence suggests it may have served multiple roles in the region’s economy and defense. The famous frieze depicting the “Dolphins of Gla”, found in the Gla Agora and currently on display in the Archaeological Museum of Thebes. The famous frieze depicting the “Dolphins of Gla”, found in the Gla Agora and currently on display in the Archaeological Museum of Thebes. Conspicuously Absent Despite its immense size and strategic location in the heart of mainland Greece, Gla is conspicuously absent from Homer’s Catalogue of Ships in Book II of the “Iliad,” which lists the Achaean Greek forces that sailed to Troy in exhaustive detail. Conversely, nearby fortified sites such as Orchomenos and Thebes are prominently featured, in addition to 27 other contingents from the historical territory of Boeotia, leading scholars to speculate on Gla’s omission. Why such a massive citadel, enclosing an area over seven times larger than Mycenae itself, was excluded from this epic ******** one of its enduring mysteries. Over the years, scholars have come up with a number of theories. Some have suggested Gla’s role as an agricultural and administrative hub, rather than a seat of royal power, may have made it less appealing for Homer’s epic narrative, which favored mythic grandeur over practical utility. Another longstanding theory is that Gla is in fact Homer’s Arne, “rich in vines,” mentioned among the Boeotian contingents in the Catalogue of Ships. Adding to its intrigue, Gla offers archaeological evidence of advanced construction techniques, including the use of fired pan and cover tiles, a technology more commonly associated with later periods. These findings challenge long-held assumptions about technological progress in the Late Bronze Age, suggesting that Mycenaean builders were experimenting with innovations that anticipated developments of the Classical era. The south gate, external view (note ashlar masonry) © Millerium / The south gate, external view (note ashlar masonry) © Millerium / Rediscovery and Preservation Since the 19th century, the enigmatic ruins of Gla and the wider region of the Copais Basin have fascinated archaeologists, with early studies by Michalis A. Kambanis, André de Ridder, and Ferdinand Noack paving the way for more systematic excavations by Greek scholar Ioannis Threpsiadis in the mid- to late-1950s. Professor Spyros Iakovidis continued the work from 1978-1991, updating previous research and carrying out surveys of hitherto unexplored sections of the site. A more recent 5-year project (2018-2022), led by Greek Ministry of Culture archaeologist Elena Kountouri and a multidisciplinary team, have uncovered new building complexes, and a large number of portable finds, including Mycenaean pottery, fragments of wall paintings and anthropomorphic figurines. Despite evidence of earlier Neolithic and later Byzantine activity at the site, archaeologists believe that Gla was abruptly abandoned at the end of the 13th century BC, during a time that witnessed the collapse of Bronze Age palatial culture across Greece and much of the eastern Mediterranean, and remained uninhabited during the Archaic-Classical and Roman periods. This gap adds yet another layer of mystery to its story, underscoring its unique place in the history of the region. Today, the citadel of Gla is at the heart of a major revitalization project led by the Greek Ministry of Culture, aimed at preserving the site and enhancing its appeal to visitors. Planned improvements include walking routes around the Cyclopean walls and across the top of the acropolis, detailed signage, lighting, and connections to nearby archaeological sites like Orchomenos. By positioning Gla as both a historical landmark and a hub for hiking and heritage tourism, the project seeks to celebrate its engineering achievements and highlight its significance within the Mycenaean world. For those seeking to step away from the crowded paths of Greece’s better-known archaeological sites, Gla offers a journey into a world of monumental ambition and innovation. The Viotian region of central Greece, rich in history and archaeological treasures, invites deeper exploration, whether as part of a weekend trip from Athens or a dedicated journey into its ancient past. Gla’s story of resilience and ingenuity resonates across millennia, connecting us to the enduring legacy of the land it once ruled. 15. Study Concludes Fall of Eastern Rome is Falsely Linked to Climate and Plague Study Concludes Fall of Eastern Rome is Falsely Linked to Climate and Plague It has widely been accepted that climate (in the form of the Late Little Ice Age or LLIA and the Justinianic Plague were the primary culprits of empirical change, causing a massive dwindling of the population, driving Rome to its knees in the 6th century AD. But a new study has refuted this claim and argues that, in fact, there was likely a spike in population size around the second half of the 6th century AD, and thus the plague and climate change had limited impact. Primary Movers of Change: Not Climate and ******** This new study, published in the journal Klio by researchers Haggai Olshanetsky, from the University of Warsaw, and Lev Cosijns, from the University of Oxford carefully analyses available archaeological evidence, data from settlements, shipwrecks, and trade patterns in the Mediterranean. They posit that human and military factors, including Persian invasions and Islamic expansion in the 7th century, were the primary movers of change. Agriculture, the base economy of most empires like this one, was thus not as affected by LLIA as was erroneously thought, relying on selected textual evidence, and archaeological evidence outside of the boundaries of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. In fact, the researchers suggest that agriculture and commercial activity could actually have both been maintained and increased in the eastern Mediterranean area, which a lot of previously considered sources have conveniently not consulted. The researchers write in the paper: “Why do empires fall? This is one of the questions that fascinate many, both in academia and among the general public. In the search for an answer, emotions are high, and imagination can run wild. Human intervention, mostly in the form of war, is commonly attributed to the decline of empires. Up until 40 years ago, historical research was oriented to this line of thinking. However, in recent decades, new suggestions have emerged that attributed the rise and fall of empires to climate and ********”. Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (now Istanbul) was built by Emperor Justinian. (blackdiamond67/Adobe Stock) In any case, it seems that LILA’s impact has been grossly overstated, and was definitely less severe in the Eastern Roman empire, reports LBV Magazine. In the higher latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, annual average temperatures fell by as much as 1.6°C, the effects in the south, like Egypt and Judea, was only about 0.25°C! “So, it seems that 536 AD was not the worst year to be alive. At least, not for most people who lived during that time. It was a terrible ******* for people living in Scandinavia, but for people who lived in the eastern Roman Empire, there were limited effects, and so life went on as usual”, said Cosjins. Even the Plague of Justinian, often described as one of the deadliest pandemics in history, is blown out of proportion. Archaeological evidence does not support such a rapid population collapse, or an ensuing economic crisis that was irreversible. St Sebastian pleading for the life of a gravedigger afflicted with plague during the 7th-century Plague of Pavia. (Josse Lieferinxe/Public domain) Irrefutable Evidence: Analyzing Genetics, Trade, Pottery, Population In fact, there are minor outbreaks mentioned by reputable sources in this *******; other sources point to how studies conducted on the genetics of the plague show that it arrived in Europe much earlier than previously believed, co-existing with the population. Looking at trade, they analyzed shipwrecks from the Mediterranean at Marseille, Naples, Carthage, eastern Spain, and Alexandria. At some point in the second half of the 7th century, Roman ships, which lined the shores by the hundreds, started disappearing. Roman goods from this ******* across *******, Tunisia, Jordan, Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece point to a prosperity and flow of trade still very much intact. In fact, there seemed to be an increase in prosperity and demography – witnessed with a rise in the number of settlements, after the 550s. The information “led us to conclude that the eastern Roman Empire started to decline … after a [disruption in trade] and military failures,” Cosijns and Olshanetsky told The Daily Mail. The researchers also considered 16,000 pieces of pottery uncovered in Nessana, southwest Negev (Judea), bordering modern-day Egypt. The trade of pottery flourished during the late 6th and early 7th centuries – in fact, there was a ‘stark increase’ after 550 AD, reflective of an ‘increase in the industrial capacity and prosperity of the region.’ The final piece of analysis was one of the in-depth case studies of Elusa, also in the Negev Desert. Previous studies had alleged that an abandonment of municipal dumps here was indicative of social collapse – the dating of trash seems to be limited and not representative of a whole set. There was likely a gradual decline in stability and the socio-economic fabric slowly eroded over the invasions from Persia, and the general expansion of the Islamic sultanates. A slow fragmentation of trade activity and disruption in agricultural practices confirms this. “We think that looking for climate change and plague as the cause for every significant change in history is problematic. This approach can especially harm the current climate change debate when claiming that past climate change caused catastrophic disruptions in society, in cases when there were none or limited effects. Such claims may inadvertently support arguments that state since climate change has always occurred, the current man-made one is not a serious issue”, the researchers conclude. The Orphan crawling out of Kos’ body – Image Credit: FromSoftware. Since then, however, we as a community have grown a lot more, to the point that one-shotting bosses has almost become routine. So when we watch some random guy pull up to the nightmare baby and ***** it with a single parry, it feels like a healing balm on a wound long unattended. People Are One-Shotting Bloodborne’s Orphan of Kos Now With Ease The Orphan staring up at the sky mournfully – Image Credit: FromSoftware. Back when Bloodborne was arguably the best and most challenging gaming experience that FromSoftware had created, Orphan of Kos was the one boss to ****** just about every hunter’s brain out there in half. The problem with the guy was that it was designed to punish at the slightest hint of defense or hesitation. It was a fair ******—don’t get us wrong—but ******** if it wasn’t a jump in difficulty the likes of which we just weren’t prepared for. You know, in the first phase, the ****** seems easy enough. The Orphan gives you enough parry windows, and even its plunging ******* leaves him susceptible to backstabs if you can dodge forward in time. But the moment the second phase begins, the difficulty gets cranked up to infinity, with the parentless menace growing faster, stronger, and more unrelenting. It swings its placenta with reckless abandon and summons near-unavoidable lightning AoEs at every chance it gets. As far back as we can remember, this was the first boss in Bloodborne that almost made it mandatory to use every trick and buff that we could gather just to stand a fighting chance, and even then, almost always, it felt as though you barely survived the ******. But why are we talking about this ****** all these years later and in such great detail? Well, just look at the following clip, and you’ll know exactly why: Back when we all first encountered the boss, it felt like a Souls game was truly testing your growth, patience, reflexes, and determination all in one ******. So, when we watch someone one-shot it the way OP did above, even with all sorts of buffs like the Poorman’s Gems, Clawmark Runes, and a good old Trick threaded can, it just feels so liberating, as though some side of us still stuck in the battle all those years ago has finally been given peace. More importantly, though, it reminds us why Orphan of Kos is still one of the best and toughest fights FromSoftware has ever crafted and how we all continue to “git gud” with each new game. Orphan of Kos Is Still One of the Best Bosses Fromsoftware Has Ever Designed The Orphan wielding his Placenta – Image Credit: FromSoftware. However, few fights within the series feel as raw, brutal, and yet fair as our ****** with the Orphan of Kos. Not that the new bosses are bad or anything—all of them have things to like about them and are incredible in their own ways—but the way the Orphan just stays in your face the entire time, attacking in this unpredictable and relentless rhythm, it just feels pure, visceral, and simply different. Even after all these years, there aren’t many bosses who can perfectly match Orphan’s storm of aggression, rage, and despair. It never needed any flashy moves or some hail-mary type of *******; its placenta and lore were enough to make us back off and rethink our approach. This was, at the end of the day, an appreciation post of sorts for the sheer nightmarish challenge that Orphan posed to us all those years ago. 17. Irminger Sea’s Crucial Role in Atlantic Ocean Current Collapse Identified Irminger Sea’s Crucial Role in Atlantic Ocean Current Collapse Identified A new study highlights the critical role of the Irminger Sea, located off southeastern Greenland, in maintaining the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The AMOC, a global ocean conveyor belt, is crucial for regulating Earth’s climate, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. According to research led by Dr Qiyun Ma, a postdoctoral researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany, disruptions in this region could have far-reaching climate impacts. Dr Ma emphasised that freshwater input into the Irminger Sea directly inhibits deep-water formation, a key process for sustaining the AMOC. This reduction in deep-water currents, caused by increasing Arctic meltwater, significantly alters atmospheric circulation and disrupts the broader ocean current system. The study underscores the urgent need for targeted monitoring of the Irminger Sea, as findings suggest its influence on the AMOC surpasses that of neighbouring regions, including the Labrador Sea and Nordic Seas. Freshwater Flow Weakens Ocean Currents The research simulated scenarios of increased freshwater in four regions of the North Atlantic and assessed the AMOC’s sensitivity. It was discovered that the Irminger Sea plays a unique role in regulating deep-water formation across adjacent seas, including the Labrador Sea. Freshwater input in this area also exacerbates climate extremes, such as altered precipitation patterns in North America and the Amazon Basin. Wider Climate Implications Findings from this study align with earlier predictions of Northern Hemisphere cooling and Arctic sea ice expansion due to a weakening AMOC. Additionally, slight warming in the Southern Hemisphere and disruptions to tropical monsoon systems were observed. Dr Ma pointed out that the location of freshwater input heavily influences these outcomes, making precise predictions more challenging. The study, published in Science Advances on November 20, highlights the growing need for climate experts and policymakers to address AMOC vulnerabilities. Enhanced monitoring of sensitive areas like the Irminger Sea could aid in developing adaptive strategies to mitigate future climate disruptions. The only downsides to the Charge 6 are that Fitbit doesn’t offer Apple Health integration and that some data and features are locked behind the company’s premium subscription. However, if you’re looking for a fitness tracker that can basically do it all, the Charge 6 is one of the best options right now. For those looking to spend less on a fitness tracker, I’ll mention that Amazon has also discounted the Inspire 3. It’s currently $70, down from $100. Fitbit’s entry-level fitness tracker is a good option for those who don’t mind bringing their phone to their bike rides and runs as the device lacks built-in GPS tracking. 22. Elon Musk to ‘summon MPs to US to explain threats to ********* citizens’ | Elon Musk Elon Musk to ‘summon MPs to US to explain threats to ********* citizens’ | Elon Musk Elon Musk has said *** MPs “will be summoned to the ******* States of America to explain their censorship and threats to ********* citizens” in a fresh escalation of tensions between the world’s richest man and Labour. Musk, who has been a fixture at the side of Donald Trump since his re-election as US president, was responding to a Guardian report on Wednesday that the Commons’ science and technology select committee would call him to give evidence in the new year in its inquiry into the spread of harmful content on social media after the August riots. Committee chair Chi Onwurah said she wanted Musk to answer how he ‘reconciles his promotion of freedom of expression with his promotion of pure disinformation’. Photograph: Richard Gardner/Rex/Shutterstock The committee’s chair, Chi Onwurah, a Labour MP, said she wanted to see how Musk, who owns the X social media platform, “reconciles his promotion of freedom of expression with his promotion of pure disinformation”. X hosts accounts by figures including Tommy Robinson and Andrew Tate, who were accused of inciting people to join Islamophobic protests. Musk, who has more than 205 million followers on X, responded by saying the MPs would be summoned to the US. He has previously complained that prison sentences handed down to people who stoked the riots on X are a breach of free speech rights and said: “I don’t think anyone should go to the *** when they’re releasing convicted paedophiles in order to imprison people for social media posts.” He has labelled the British prime minister “two-tier Kier”, alleging that not all communities were equally protected by police in the ***, while Jess Philips, a government minister, has labelled X “a place of misery”. Musk weighed in on changes to inheritance tax on farms by saying on Monday that “Britain is going full Stalin”. Peter Mandelson, who is tipped to become the next *** ambassador to Washington, then called for an end to the “feud” between Musk and the *** government, calling him “a sort of technological, industrial, commercial phenomenon” with whom the *** must build bridges. In an interview with the Guardian on Thursday, Peter Kyle, the secretary of state for science and technology, denied there was a feud and called Musk “an innovator of extraordinary proportions, the like of which our globe, our humanity, very rarely sees”. He said he was ready to have “a frank conversation where we disagree, but also strive to find common ground”. However, Kyle added: “The way that he has characterised British society is wrong. I would love to have a conversation with him about how, with his view of free speech, we can keep people safe. Free speech, in my view, doesn’t include the right to sow either misinformation or hatred to a degree that damages either people or communities … as happened in August and that led to arrests because that was ********* activity.” skip past newsletter promotion Our morning email breaks down the key stories of the day, telling you what’s happening and why it matters Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. He also said he had “no plans to go off X, simply because I respect so much of the audience that’s there and I do want to communicate with”. It was not immediately clear to what “threats to ********* citizens” Musk was referring in his call for British MPs to be summoned to Washington, but one of his US-based online followers claimed, without providing evidence, he was called by British police and threatened with charges if he did not take down certain posts during the riots. Another follower described the MPs’ wish to call Musk to give evidence as a trap, saying: “They’ll detain him at the border, demand to see the contents of his phone, and charge him under counter-terrorism laws when he refuses.” Asked about Musk’s response, Onwurah said: “X is one of the most relevant social media platforms to our inquiry. We want to hear from senior figures at the company so that we can gather the best evidence possible. And Mr Musk is the most senior representative of X, with strong views on misinformation as well as freedom of expression, an important subject in its own right.” Musk has started calling himself “first buddy” in relation to the president-elect and has been given the job of reforming US government efficiency. It appears he will have considerable influence on the regulation of artificial intelligence, especially considering he owns an AI startup, xAI, which has attracted billions of dollars in investment from the Qatar sovereign wealth fund and Silicon Valley private equity giants. 24. This Batman Collection Of 4K Movies Has Gotten A Massive ****** Friday Discount This Batman Collection Of 4K Movies Has Gotten A Massive ****** Friday Discount Early ****** Friday deals are here, but if you’re a resident of the DC Universe, then prepare yourself for some Bat Friday specials instead. For many Batman fans, there was the first golden age of films starring the Caped Crusader that began in 1989 and ended in 1997. This particular era is on ***** right now, and you can watch all of them in 4K for $40. Normally $90, this box set includes Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin. Each film has a new cover, as well as enough extra content to fill up the Batcave. The Batman film directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight got the ball rolling on a new era of superhero movies when it was first released in 1989, and 35 years later, it’s still highly regarded as one of the best Batman movies of all time. Burton and Keaton would be back for a sequel in 1992, and while it wasn’t as big at the box office as the first film, it still made a ******** at the time when it came to ticket sales. Batman Returns also had an ensemble cast that included Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken, and it’s a way better Christmas movie than **** Hard. By 1995, things were changing for the Batman movie franchise, and with an aim to appeal to younger audiences, Warner Bros. hired Joel Schumacher to direct Batman Forever, with Val Kilmer stepping up to replace Keaton as Gotham’s protector. The movie also introduced Robin–played by Chris O’Donnell–and while it was a massive tonal shift from Burton’s Batman movies, the film still has plenty of charm, a cool neon design, and numerous moments where Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey chewed up all the scenery as the villains Two-Face and the Riddler, respectively. While it was critically–and commercially slammed–when it came out in 1997, time has been kinder to Batman & Robin. It’s a goofy movie that feels like a toy commercial, but it’s a ***** of a great advert to watch. George Clooney delivered an underrated performance as Batman, and there’s a lot of groovy inspiration here from the 1966 Batman TV series that starred Adam West as the unflappable vigilante. It’s also the only movie where you can see Arnold Schwarzenegger ham it up and drop ice-related puns. ****** Friday Batman Films and TV Blu-ray deals For a few more bat-related deals, Amazon has several early ****** Friday deals on Batman movies and TV series. The classic Batman TV series is still delightful and on ***** for $30 (was $90), the full run of Batman Beyond episodes is available for $26.50 (was $31.40) on Blu-ray, and Batman: The Animated Series is a steal at $30 (was $80) for the entire award-winning series. Just don’t let Batman catch you pilfering it. Source link #Batman #Collection #Movies #Massive #****** #Friday #Discount Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  25. AMD is allegedly readying budget hexa-core Krackan Point APUs — Hybrid 3+3 core “Zen 5 + Zen 5c” offering surfaces at Geekbench AMD is allegedly readying budget hexa-core Krackan Point APUs — Hybrid 3+3 core “Zen 5 + Zen 5c” offering surfaces at Geekbench A new hexa-core processor under AMD’s Krackan Point (KRK) lineup of APUs has emerged at Geekbench – thanks to Olrak at X. The CPU wields a rather unconventional 3+3 hybrid configuration – taking a different approach than AMD did with its Phoenix 2 APUs. Krackan Point is AMD’s cheaper alternative to Strix Point – packing upwards of eight cores and an eight Compute Unit (CU) RDNA 3.5-based iGPU (Integrated GPU). Krackan Point utilizes a hybrid-core design to save valuable **** space, featuring up to four Zen 5 and four Zen 5c cores. The six-core offering has an OPN code of “100-000001600-40_Y,” corresponding to a Ryzen 5 APU per previously leaked shipping manifests. The benchmark, being an AI test, isn’t that exciting once you consider that Krackan employs the same 50 TOPS XDNA 2 NPU as Strix Point. Going over the listed specs, the budget Ryzen 5 300 APU packs three Zen 5 and three Zen 5c cores alongside 12 threads – quite different from the Phoenix 2-based Ryzen 5 7545U – which had two Zen 4 and four Zen 4c cores. Moreover, the APU was being tested in an Asus validation platform and had a relatively low base frequency of 2 GHz – but that’s likely a result of early silicon. (Image credit: Geekbench) AMD reintroduced a dual-CCX design with Strix Point – splitting up the Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores across different rings – with separate L3 caches for both core types. Interestingly, for the Krackan Point APU in question, Geekbench divides the core count into two clusters. However, Olrak suggests that AMD might package all six cores together – connected through a unified ring bus – sharing a coherent L3 cache. To chip in, the Ryzen 5 7545U (Phoenix 2) also employed a single CCX, but the final decision rests on AMD. Rest assured, laptops powered by AMD’s Krackan Point offerings are set to arrive in early 2025 – starting at $799 if we go by leaks. Overall, CES 2025 will be jampacked with next-gen launches from all major players. Expect to see AMD unveil Krackan Point alongside Strix Halo APUs, ***** Range CPUs, and Radeon RX 8000 “RDNA 4” GPUs. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.
