Tyson vs Paul: Katie Taylor narrowly defeats Amanda Serrano on points in epic rematch Tyson vs Paul: Katie Taylor narrowly defeats Amanda Serrano on points in epic rematch The super-****** was deserving of topping the bill, yet the striking dome-shaped stadium was almost full when the boxers made their ring walks. A smiling Serrano lapped up the applause, dancing her way through a line of Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Taylor, in ****** with gold trim, was more understated in her ring walk but still soaking up the atmosphere as she sauntered down the runway without any real urgency. Serrano began strongly, whipping in a left ***** in the closing seconds of round one to buckle Taylor’s legs. Bray native Taylor knew all about her opponent’s power, having somehow stayed on her feet in a memorable fifth round of the first ******. She once again weathered the storm and landed combinations in the second as the bout began to heat up. Promoter Eddie Hearn, who was not sure whether he would be given accreditation for the ****** after criticising the Tyson-Paul bout, watched on at ringside. The challenger complained to the referee about Taylor’s excessive holding as both women trading punches in a terrific fifth, Serrano with the accurate blows. The ringside doctor took a look at Serrano after another clash of heads in the fifth, as the crowd gasped at the close-up on the big screen. Serrano valiantly continued, her eyesight hindered as she wiped blood every few seconds. Taylor targeted the damage with left hooks as both boxers threw caution to the wind. Taylor was hurt by an uppercut in the seventh before replying with a two-punch combination. The ****** was living up to all the hype, with Serrano’s warrior spirit winning over those fans who may not have already been invested in the chief support. After the point deduction, Taylor continued with her punches but so did Serrano. Just like they did at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Taylor and Serrano continued to throw hands until the final seconds of round 10. Serrano outlanded Taylor and was more accurate in her punching. She also landed 324 punches over 10 rounds. More than they landed combined in their first ******. Perth Wildcats star Bryce Cotton’s love for basketball rose even higher when recovering from injury Perth Wildcats star Bryce Cotton’s love for basketball rose even higher when recovering from injury Perth Wildcats superstar Bryce Cotton has declared his gratitude for playing basketball is at an all-time high after he made a stunning return from a rib injury during Friday night’s win over South East Melbourne Phoenix. Cotton had been forced to watch from the sidelines after injuring his rib against New Zealand on October 19 but exploded with 33 points in a stunning return to the court during the 97-84 win. The 32-year-old has been remarkably durable throughout his NBL career despite being constantly targeted by the opposition every week, and Cotton said being forced to watch from the sidelines had made him realise what he was missing. “It just felt so good to be out there on the floor,” Cotton said. Camera IconBryce Cotton had a huge game in his return from injury. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images “For me I live, breathe, sleep basketball and being out for those four weeks, all I had was just my thoughts, especially in those first couple of weeks when I was basically bed-ridden. My gratitude is at an all-time high being out there on the floor. Playing well is a bonus. I’m super happy to just be back out there.” Youngsters Ben Henshall and Elijah Pepper seized their opportunities when Cotton was injured, spending more time on the court and having ******* roles. Cotton said he’d made an effort to help with their development during his time out and saw the injury as a chance to teach them what was needed to become elite NBL players. Camera IconBryce Cotton in action. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images “I”m not a talkative guy by nature but any time they had questions or things like that, I gave them whatever advice I felt they needed. It was good to be able to see the game from a different perspective. and also watching what’s going through other players’ minds,” he said. “When you’re playing with them, you’re not focusing on other people too much. I think I was able to get into the younger guys’ heads and see what they’re thinking because I’ve been there before. So when they did have some questions, I think I was pretty useful for them.” The Wildcats will now attempt to beat the Brisbane Bullets in Queensland on Sunday, knowing they have lost the second game of a double-header in all three of their matches this season. The Bullets also played on Friday night, having lost to Tasmania JackJumpers by three points. Wildcats coach John Rillie said his team could not afford to drop away from the way they perform at home. “Our approach has to be the same,” Rillie said. “I think it’s about our dedication once we get to the game and we throw up the ball. Our mindset to start the game – we need to have a nice edge to ourselves so we’re not playing catch up.” Source link #Perth #Wildcats #star #Bryce #Cottons #love #basketball #rose #higher #recovering #injury Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The hills of northern Scotland will see regular snow showers with 5-10cm (2-4in) building up over hills and a few centimetres in some lower areas by Monday, with the potential for some localised disruption where it settles. The ground in November is not as cold as it would be in midwinter so some of the snow hitting the roads will probably melt, though larger accumulations could gather on colder grassy surfaces. Company announces nearly $712 million project in Kentucky to make batteries used to store energy Company announces nearly $712 million project in Kentucky to make batteries used to store energy FRANKFORT, ***. (AP) — A battery manufacturer has selected Kentucky for a nearly $712 million project to produce industrial-sized batteries used to store and distribute energy, a process seen as increasingly important to help secure a reliable electric grid for the country, officials said Friday. The Shelbyville Battery Manufacturing plant will employ 1,572 workers once the project reaches full capacity, deepening Kentucky’s ties to emerging battery technologies. Companies wanting to make batteries to power vehicles have announced projects expected to total nearly $12 billion in new investments and create more than 10,280 fulltime jobs in Kentucky. “With this investment, we’re putting our stamp on working to become just the battery capital of the ******* States,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in announcing the new project to be located in Shelbyville. Production at the Shelbyville battery plant is expected to begin in late 2025. The plant, a part of ********* Solar Inc., will produce batteries used by utilities and other customers to store energy at large scale. The batteries are about 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and nearly 9 feet tall, the company said. They can be paired with solar, wind or other forms of electricity generation and are seen as playing a crucial role for both a green energy future and a secure power grid as demand for electricity continues to grow in the U.S. The batteries can keep a steady flow of power when sources like wind and solar are not producing. For example, when people are sleeping and thus using less electricity, the energy produced from wind blowing through the night can be stored in batteries — and used when demand is high during the day. “Energy storage is a crucial part of the new and evolving electricity grid,” said Shawn Qu, chairman and CEO of ********* Solar. “Battery cells are the heart of a utility-scale energy storage system. This project will put Kentucky at the center of the effort to build a robust and secure electricity grid for this country.” ********* Solar has a global presence in the design and production of battery energy storage systems for utility-scale applications. Kentucky’s ties to the company will only strengthen the Bluegrass State’s role in the energy sector, Beshear said. For centuries, Kentucky coal helped power the nation. Now, the Shelbyville plant will produce batteries used across the country to help ensure a reliable flow of electricity for consumers, Beshear said. “This is energy security for the ******* States,” the governor said. “It’s in our national security. And this company choosing to do it in Kentucky means we’re going to be a part of providing that security for the entire country’s infrastructure and in the grid.” Story Continues The battery factory will be the largest economic development project in Shelby County’s history and ranks as the third-largest jobs project announced during Beshear’s nearly five-year tenure as governor. Shelbyville Mayor Troy Ethington called the project a milestone for his community, located just east Louisville. It will become Shelby County’s largest employer, creating new opportunities for residents, he said. The company said it is committed to hiring locally to fill the jobs. The Shelbyville facility also will include a research and development lab to help advance battery technology, the company said. “This investment ensures more Kentucky families will thrive, and that the commonwealth’s incredible economic momentum continues,” Beshear said. State officials offered a package of performance-based tax incentives for the battery project, tied to the company’s investment, job creation and employee wages, the state said. Aaron Morris, 31, ***** about six hours after his motorbike collided with a car on 1 July 2022 in Esh Winning, near Durham. Coroner Crispin Oliver was told it took 54 minutes for an ambulance to get to the ****** due to high demand. He heard evidence from one expert who suggested Mr Morris’s chance of survival had been as high as 95% had he been treated in a timely manner. The North East Ambulance Service’s (NEAS) target for arrival at a scene was 18 minutes. During the inquest, at Crook in County Durham, the coroner heard an air ambulance could have been sent to the scene earlier, but this did not happen. He said a specialist paramedic, known as a clinical team leader (CTL), was not deployed to the ******. Mr Oliver said: “It is highly likely that Aaron Morris would have survived had available specialist medical treatment been applied in a timely manner.” He added such treatment had not occurred speedily due to “overstretched resources” and the ******** to deploy a CTL to the ******. ‘Would have survived’ The inquest also heard that Mr Morris’s pregnant wife, Samantha, came across the scene of the ****** while returning from a hospital appointment. It was also told the father-of-five experienced a cardiac arrest in the ambulance, which Mrs Morris directed to the hospital because the driver did not know the way. Mr Oliver concluded: “It is highly likely that Aaron Morris would have survived had available specialist medical treatment been applied in a timely manner. “Aaron Morris ***** from injuries sustained in a road traffic collision and ******** of the response of the ambulance service, contributed to by neglect.” PA Samantha Morris said she appreciated the ambulance service’s transparency NEAS medical director Dr Kat Noble said the service “unreservedly apologise” for not providing the right care. “We accept that opportunities were missed to deploy a clinical team leader to this incident,” she said, adding the service fully accepts the coroner’s findings and has taken a number of actions as a result of its investigations into Mr Morris’s ******. Mrs Morris said the transparency shown by bodies such as NEAS was “appreciated”. “After hearing the evidence from Dr Noble… I would now feel confident dialling 999 and requesting a North East ambulance which I never thought I would say. “I want to now focus on my children and moving forwards.” Additional reporting by PA Media. 4 Financial Goals Suze Orman Says You Should Have Achieved By Age 50 4 Financial Goals Suze Orman Says You Should Have Achieved By Age 50 Mediapunch / Shutterstock.com As the old saying goes, age is just a number. There’s a lot you can do, regardless of how many candles you’ve blown out on your birthday cake. However, there is value — in more ways than one — in hitting certain financial milestones by key ages. By the time you’ve reached the big 5-0, odds are, you have your eye on how to grow your wealth and security in the here and now while also looking to the horizon toward retirement. Average Americans are quietly becoming millionaires. Copy their strategies and start building wealth. Earn up to $1K a month from your couch with these 5 easy side hustles — no experience required. If there’s one person who knows a thing or two about hitting personal finance goals, it’s Suze Orman. From saving to investing to, of course, planning your retirement, she has advice that serves everyone well — especially if you’re at an age where you’re flattered to be carded at the wine store. Trending Now: Suze Orman’s Secret to a Wealthy Retirement–Have You Made This Money Move? Planning for retirement can feel like spinning plates: You’ve got to balance the income you need to sustain your current lifestyle with the income you think you’ll need to sustain the kind of life you want in retirement (are you a big traveler or more of a homebody?), your longevity and the return on your retirement investment portfolio. It’s a lot to consider. While acknowledging these factors are “hard to pin down,” Orman points to a “cheat sheet” compiled by Fidelity that estimates how much you should have saved for retirement by certain ages. According to that ranking, by the time you reach 50, you should have saved around six times your current income. Does that feel daunting? It doesn’t have to be. “The good news is that now you have a sense that you really should up your savings game,” said Orman. “Your goal, for the rest of this year, and for 2024 and beyond is to just save more. If you are contributing 6% to your workplace retirement plan, raise that to 7% or 8%.” While it’s tempting to think of overspending as a young person’s issue, people of all ages can be seduced by the siren song of simply buying too much stuff — and not putting enough money away for your retirement. Fortunately, Orman offered a simple yet effective tip: Scour your spending habits to find extra cash you can redirect to retirement savings. For instance, if you’ve already saved $4,000 in a Roth IRA, look to add another $1,000 or $2,000. Story Continues “Don’t automatically tell yourself no. Increasing your Roth IRA savings by $2,000 a year works out to less than $40 a week, or $5.50 a day. Saving $5,000 more a year works out to $100 a week, or less than $14 a day,” she said. Orman suggests you consider increasing your contributions to your retirement accounts as a gift — and it’s certainly the gift that keeps on giving. Pondering the inevitable isn’t exactly what anyone would call fun. But since the inevitable is, well, inevitable, it’s vital to have an estate plan in place to protect your loved ones. You’ll need a will, a revocable trust, a financial power of attorney, as well as an advanced directive with a durable power of attorney for your health care. Orman suggests a tool to make this heavy lift of preparation feel much lighter. She recommends using the Must Have Documents online program, which helps you create these documents while guiding you through the process of notarization. Investing can be so much more than picking a few random stocks and calling it a day. You should create a real investment strategy, which can mean partnering with a financial advisor or turning to experts like Orman for advice. But even when you have that plan in place, you shouldn’t get complacent. “When was the last time you carefully reviewed how much you have invested in stocks? Five years? Ten years? That puts you that much closer to retirement,” Orman said. She suggests evaluating the percentage of your portfolio you have invested in stocks, especially as you get older. “For many people, as they near retirement, it can make sense to reduce their reliance on stocks if they want a smoother ride,” she said. Financial advisors aren’t just for the wealthy. Find out why it’s never too early to hire an expert to help you grow your wealth. Orman reminded readers that these decisions are personal and should align with your needs. Just because you heavily invested in stocks as a fortysomething doesn’t mean you should maintain that level as you approach retirement. You may want to consider diversifying into low-risk assets like high-quality bonds or reallocating within your retirement accounts to adjust your risk profile. California will rename places to remove ******* term for a Native ********* woman California will rename places to remove ******* term for a Native ********* woman SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A ******* term for a Native ********* woman will be removed from nearly three dozen geographic features and place names on California lands, the state Natural Resources Agency announced Friday. California Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2022 signed a bill into law that bans use of the word “******” in future place names and ordered the agency rename all places that used the slur, including on streets, bridges, public buildings and cemeteries, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. New names have been selected in consultation with California’s Native ********* tribes for over 30 locations in 15 counties. The California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names will work to implement approved replacement names by Jan. 1. One example is in the city of West Sacramento, where local officials worked with the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation to develop two new street names to replace the slur. The name recommended by the Tribal Council of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation is “tebti,” which is a word and blessing that translates to streams that flow together. “With continued consultation, tribes can lead initiatives to eliminate such words from California’s public places,” said Anthony Roberts, tribal chairman. A full list of new California names was not available Friday but will be made public shortly, the natural resources agency told The Associated Press in an email. Assemblymember James C. Ramos, a Democrat from San Bernardino who became California’s first Native ********* state lawmaker in 2018, authored the bill. He is a resident of the San Manuel Indian Reservation and member of the Serrano/Cahuilla tribe. In 2021, a popular Northern California ski resort changed its name to Palisades Tahoe as part of efforts nationally to address a history of colonialism and oppression against Native Americans and other people of ******. Wrexham residents plagued by problems Wrexham residents plagued by problems Shelby Brown Five-year-old Riley and his mum, Shelby Brown, were crossing the road with a group near their house when he bruised his leg in a broken drain Buying a home on a brand new estate is meant to offer peace of mind, free from the potential pitfalls of older homes. But people living on Fern Meadow in Wrexham have been plagued by issues including unfinished roads and pavements, flooding, and loose sockets and holes in their ceilings. Shelby Brown’s five-year-old son Riley was injured when he fell down a broken drain cover while trick or treating. Anwyl Homes said health and safety advice was given to home buyers while and Bellway Homes – ****** developer of the estate in Llay – added that it was in “regular communication with affected residents”. The 360-home development was built in 2020, but most of the estate’s roads and pavements are yet to be surfaced. While out on Halloween, Riley’s foot went through a gap in a drain cover, leaving him with bruises up his leg. Anwyl sent its best wishes to the family and said the gully cover had immediately been replaced. But Ms Brown said she felt “shrugged off” after being told the company “did not believe” it was responsible as it told home buyers to “take extra precautions” on unfinished roads and use the “footpaths provided”. Ms Brown said the response was “absolutely shocking”. Melissa Brimer and James Evans said the condition of the new estate gives a “bad impression” This incident brought into sharp focus the problems that have plagued Fern Meadow residents since they started moving in four years ago. Drainage system problems, flooding, and construction issues inside and outside their homes are chief among the complaints. One resident, who did not want to be named, said what happened to Riley was “not a surprise” and there were other safety hazards, including loose manhole covers. Shelby Brown Riley suffered bruising to his leg when his foot slipped through this ***** He paid £250,000 for his Bellway home two years ago and said, when he moved in, the list of unfinished work included kitchen sockets hanging out of walls, holes in the ceiling and flooding in his back garden. He added that he discovered one issue that could have been fatal when he was trying to install some lights. “The fuses were the wrong way around,” he said. “The wires were live. I had a tester, so I realised. I’d be ***** if not.” Fern Meadow resident Residents have complained about many issues, including flooded gardens For James Evans and Melissa Brimer, who moved in just over 18 months ago, it is the look of the estate that is a big concern, with unfinished roads and makeshift ramps. Mr Evans said the “lack of communication” and “poor after-***** care” was frustrating. “No-one from the developers comes here to explain the timescales,” he said. Another resident, who did not want to give their name, said he and his partner commissioned their own independent engineering report after persistent flooding in their garage, driveway, and garden. They also notified the National House Building Council (NHBC) about issues inside including a sinking kitchen floor and a gas ***** which left them with no heating, but said developers seem “not to be answerable to anyone”. “You are left in a wilderness. You would have better consumer protection if you were buying a pair of shoes,” they added. Developers say work to get the roads and pavements finished is getting underway Both developers have apologised for the delays in completing work on the roads and pavements, but said progress was being made. Bellway homes said it would continue to work with residents, but in some cases, access to properties had prevented them from carrying out work. Regarding concerns about manhole covers, Bellway said keys were needed to lift them and any loose covers had been “remedied” when spotted by the onsite team. Another Wrexham Bellway development, Gatewen Village in New Broughton, has also been suffered flooding while waiting for drainage works to start. The house builder is also dealing with complaints about flooding and outstanding snagging issues on other developments including in one in Cambridgeshire. Swansea-based snagging expert John Cooper said the issues at Fern Meadow were common on new-build estates across the ***, with too few quality tradespeople to cope with the demand. One resident said he had easily lifted a number of manhole covers near his house Fern Meadow was controversial before it was even built – plans were rejected by Wrexham council, only to be given the green light by the Welsh government’s planning inspector. Llay councillor Rob Walsh said objections included fears about flooding. He believes people who moved in had been “let down”, saying residents who complained were told “it’s a private matter, sort it out between yourselves”. Fellow councillor Bryan Apsley said “it seems like it’s been a disaster from day one”. The Welsh government said its permission included land drainage works to be submitted to the council, and it was the authority’s job to enforce planning conditions. The council told the BBC developers were responsible until it was happy that “drainage, roads and footways are completed to a satisfactory standard for adoption”. NHBC said its 10-year warranty “protects homeowners in the event of serious structural defect” but said snagging issues were the builder’s responsibility. Mr Cooper added: “Developers are just management companies who sub-contract the work out,” he said. He added that buyers were at the mercy of who was doing the work, saying: “You might have the best tradesman working on your build or the worst. “Developers are selling the perfect dream. But they are not construction companies, they are just sales companies.” Source link #Wrexham #residents #plagued #problems Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Scotland 1-0 Croatia: How Ben Doak left Modric & Gvardiol in shade Scotland 1-0 Croatia: How Ben Doak left Modric & Gvardiol in shade Before Doak started to motor, this was shaping up to be a paean to Luka Modric and his delicious array of passes, his uncanny ability to make everything look so effortless and his other-worldly ability to find space in crowded places. Scotland sent one man after another to get close to him and he counted them in and counted them back out again. Not one Scot ruffled his feathers. That job fell instead to an ********. And what a job referee Orel Grinfeeld made of it. World-class whistling, from a Scottish perspective at least. Grinfeeld sounds like a character from the Fantastic Beasts movies and, in sending off Petar Sucic just before the break, he became a beautiful creature to a previously angst-ridden home crowd. The Tartan Army were living off their nerves to that point. Scotland were blessed to be level. Frankly, they were all over the place. Hustled and harried and looking to all the world like they were preparing to plunge ever deeper into the bottomless pit of poor results. Croatia should have been a goal or two to the good, but weren’t. If they were frustrated, it was nothing compared to the state they were about to get themselves. Sucic, on a booking, was adjudged to have barrelled into John Souttar and out came the red. It was unjust and, suddenly, Modric lost his shape. He shouted, he laughed sarcastically, he waved his arms in disbelief. And then he was booked. He’ll miss Portugal on Monday. At the break, one of his coaches stared out Grinfeeld in a slightly comedic scene. When the Croatian advanced, out came a yellow card. Pantomime stuff. Wonderful. Aussie Daniels stars again, equals Jordan’s NBA streak Aussie Daniels stars again, equals Jordan’s NBA streak Dyson Daniels has continued his scoring surge with 25 points, equalling an impressive Michael Jordan streak as he helped Atlanta beat Washington 129-117 in the NBA Cup. Coming off a career-high 28 points in Tuesday night’s 117-116 win at defending NBA champions Boston, Daniels made 10 of 14 shots from the field and paced the Wizards’ defence with six steals. The ***********, recruited by New Orleans with pick No.8 in the 2022 draft, has gone from strength to strength in his first season with the Hawks. Daniels is averaging a league-best 3.8 steals per game, with Washington’s Jordan Poole next on that table. The Bendigo product has now tallied 15-plus points and five-plus steals in four consecutive NBA games. No other NBA player has achieved that feat since Jordan in the 1989-90 season. Kyle Kuzma led Washington with 24 points, Poole had 22 and rookie Alex Sarr added a career-high 20 points. Despite the trio’s scoring leadership, the Wizards’ NBA Cup opener was their seventh consecutive loss. Meanwhile, Australians Josh Giddey and Ben Simmons both had quiet games while their sides suffered contrasting defeats on Saturday (AEDT). Brooklyn lost 124-122 to the New York Knicks despite scoring 40 points in a dramatic final-quarter comeback. Simmons had seven rebounds, five assists and four points for the Nets. Jalen Brunson made a go-ahead three-pointer for the Knicks with 6.2 seconds left after his team had blown a 21-point lead. Chicago were outclassed 144-126 by Cleveland, who are now 14-0 for the season. The Cavs are the sixth team to go 14-0 and first since the Golden State Warriors opened 24-0 in 2015-16. Cleveland’s 14-game winning streak is the longest in the club’s 55-year existence. Giddey scored five points and spent 15 minutes on court during the lopsided match. In San Antonio, Anthony Davis had 40 points and 12 rebounds and LeBron James had 15 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists as the LA Lakers opened the defence of their Emirates NBA Cup title with a 120-115 victory over the Spurs. James had his career-high fourth straight triple-double for Los Angeles. Davis shot 14 for 26, making two of four three-pointers, in his highest-scoring game of the season. Austin Reaves added 19 points, Dalton Knecht had 14 and D’Angelo Russell 13. Victor Wembanyama had 28 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and two blocks for San Antonio. On Wednesday night, he had a career-high 50 points in a 139-130 home victory over Washington. Mom, 30, was ‘clinically *****’ for 45 minutes. When she woke, she found out she gave birth to triplets Mom, 30, was ‘clinically *****’ for 45 minutes. When she woke, she found out she gave birth to triplets When Marisa Christie arrived at the hospital for a planned cesarean section to deliver her triplets, everything seemed to be going smoothly. But soon after giving birth, something unusual happened. “The doctors had pulled all three (*******) out. Actually, they were resting them on my stomach to do a delayed cord clamping,” Christie, 30, of Tomball, Texas, tells TODAY.com. “My arms flew up, and that was when my heart stopped.” Christie had experienced an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a rare, but often deadly birth complication. Luckily, doctors immediately realized what was happening, and they started stabilizing Christie. Still, she spent a week unconscious. When she woke, she learned some shocking news. “My husband was like, ‘Hey, so we had the *******. They’re healthy and great,’” Christie recalls. “I was absolutely terrified. … How could I not remember having my *******?” Unexpected triplets and pregnancy complication Marisa and Dillon Christie have a 4-year-old son and had been trying to have another baby for about two years. Eventually, Christie spoke with her doctors and started an ovulation trigger shot, which encourages egg maturation to assist pregnancy. She was thrilled when she became pregnant, but she received some unexpected news after her first ultrasound. “They were like, ‘We’re pretty sure it’s twins. There might be a third one hiding,’” she says. “I was in complete shock.” She “cried most of that month” as the couple considered life with four children. “I was like, ‘There’s no way we could physically do this,’” she says. Soon, their worry turned to excitement, even though being pregnant with multiples was tough at times. Christie felt exhausted all the time and she felt “very *****” for the first five months. By the end of her pregnancy, it was tiring to stand for too long. Then, they learned one of the three ******* had its own separate twin that never developed, and needed to undergo a procedure while in the womb. “Our baby C was sharing a sack with a twin but that twin never got a heartbeat,” Christie explains. “That (twin) was still getting blood flow.” Marisa Christie’s second pregnancy felt slightly ******* than her first. Carrying triplets made her feel ill for the first five months and she recalls being very tired. Doctors had to remove the ******** because the lessened blood flow “was putting too much stress on baby C’s heart.” “That was a little scary,” Christie says. On Aug. 21, at 33 weeks pregnant, Marisa and Dillion Christie arrived at Memorial Hermann Medical Center in Houston for a planned C-section. Her OB-GYN, Dr. Amber Samuel, delivered the three ******* successfully. As they rested on Christie, though, Dr. Ricardo Mora, the anesthesiologist, noticed she was seizing. “She (was) essentially gray,” Mora, an anesthesiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann the Woodlands Medical Center, tells TODAY.com. “I knew something terrible just occurred.” About 15 years ago, Mora was the anesthesiologist during a delivery where a mom experienced an amniotic fluid embolism, basically an intense allergic reaction to amniotic fluid after delivery. Immediately, he knew Christie was experiencing that same emergency. “It’s pretty catastrophic. When it occurs, it’s about 80%, 85% fatal,” Mora says. “I asked Dr. Samuel what she had done. She related to me that she had just started pulling the placenta out and that’s usually the time when this occurs — the separation of the placenta and *******.” Mora called a code blue because he knew they needed help and medical staff flooded into the room. The situation was dire. “She wasn’t breathing,” Mora says. “We started CPR because she had no pulse.” Mora and his colleagues performed CPR while she hemorrhaged. Doctors kept replacing her blood, while Samuel tried to stop the bleeding by closing the *******. Meanwhile, Dr. Stephen Maniscalco, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, prepared to place Christie on ECMO, a machine that works for the heart and lungs to help the body recover. Almost an hour after her heart stopped, ECMO was pumping blood for Christie. “She essentially lost what we consider her whole blood volume,” Mora says. “We replaced her blood volume. So, for 45 minutes, she was clinically *****.” While Christie was in the intensive care unit after she stabilized on ECMO, she began bleeding again, and Samuel brought Christie back to the operating room. “Anything that can bleed will because you don’t have the normal clotting factors,” Samuel, who’s also a maternal fetal medicine physician at Memorial Hermann the Woodlands Medical Center, tells TODAY.com. Samuel tried medications and devices to encourage the ******* to “clamp down” and stop bleeding. But nothing worked and Christie experienced uncontrolled hemorrhaging from her *******. “We tried to resuscitate her and prevent her from having a hysterectomy,” Samuel says. “Cutting into (her) was very very dangerous.” Still, they eventually needed to remove the *******. To help her heal, doctors left the incision open so they wouldn’t have to perform subsequent surgeries. “There are lots of little, tiny blood vessels that in normal circumstances will just clot up and stop bleeding on their own,” Samuel says. But in patients with an amniotic fluid embolism, “if you close that up, what happens inevitably is that (blood vessels) dump a bunch of blood in that space, and it causes it to re-open.” Amniotic fluid embolisms Amniotic fluid embolisms are “very rare occurrences.” “The likelihood of it happening to any individual mom who might be reading this is incredibly low,” Samuel says. Still, doctors remain uncertain what causes it, though being pregnant with multiples is a risk factor. “It’s a little bit like getting struck by lightning,” Samuel. “Unfortunately, it happens sometimes to some people. Almost never again to the same people if they survive.” Despite how uncommon they are, doctors know they’re a potentially fatal medical emergency and many hospitals prepare to address them if they should occur, she adds. An amniotic fluid embolism occurs when some fetal substance crosses from the baby’s circulation to the mom’s circulation, Samuel says. In the past, doctors once thought that tissue moved into the mother’s lungs, causing an embolism or a blockage that impacts normal heart and lung function by blocking circulation. “More recent studies show that actually what’s happening is some sort of anaphylactoid — which means like an allergic reaction but not — to some protein that moms are exposed to which basically causes a bunch of different problems,” Samuel says. The body reacts by shutting down blood flow. “It’s something called DIC, or disseminated intravascular coagulation,” Samuel says. “You immediately make a bunch of blood clots, but you also start bleeding from everywhere.” This makes treating it challenging for doctors. Clots can cause more blockages, making it hard for the organs to work properly, and blood loss means patients constantly need to undergo transfusions. “Every organ system is failing immediately, so you need people to take care of every organ system,” Samuel says. “Having access to blood products, having access to ECMO, which is what Marisa went on, those things are vital to surviving.” ‘Stronger and stronger’ For a week, Christie remained unconscious while she was sedated and on ECMO. Mora visited her often, hoping to see signs of improvement. “You can do the best CPR in the world, but if you don’t get enough blood to the brain, essentially they are alive but with brain damage,” he says. “I needed her to live to raise her kids. So, it was a personal thing for me.” While Marisa Christie was sedated on ECMO, staff placed her newborn triplet daughters on her so they could have skin-to-skin contact. She remembers this but at the time she believed it was a dream. After a few days, Mora noticed Christie fluttered her eyes and seemed as if she heard people talking around her. These signs gave him hope. After she was weaned off the breathing machine and ECMO, he talked to her, relieved by how she was doing. “Essentially, she got stronger and stronger,” he says. Christie felt confused and thought she was experiencing the vivid dreams she had throughout pregnancy when she first woke. After realizing she delivered her triplets, she felt the pain from the open wound, which made her realize that being in the hospital was real. “The pain that I felt, I’m like there’s no way this is not real,” she says. “That’s the first very coherent thought I remember having.” The triplet ****** were “completely healthy” but stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit to gain weight and learn how to eat. When Christine first met the ******* Charlotte, Kendall and Collins, it felt “very surreal.” “I remember thinking, ‘I don’t know these *******. This is very strange. They feel like they’re not real. They feel like they’re not mine,’” she says. “They were already over a week old by the time I had met them. … It took a little bit to get that connection with them.” But the ******* knew her. Staff placed baby blankets on Christie while she was in the ICU, and they swaddled the ******* in them so they knew how their mom smelled. Christie also did skin-to-skin with them while she was unconscious. “They could tell that I was their mom,” she says. “They respond to me when I talk to them as opposed to other people.” When Christie returned home, she still had an open wound. Fortunately, she was able to rest at home for a week before the oldest baby, Charlotte, came home — the first of the three. “I basically lived in a recliner in our living room because I couldn’t really get up and move. I was attached to a wound vac,” she says. “My core is completely obliterated. So, it was really really hard for me to move.” Kendall and Collins followed Charlotte, who already exhibits big -oldest-daughter energy and is the “ringleader” at home. Having the ******* leave the hospital in staggered order helped Christie adjust to life with a toddler and multiple infants. “That was a blessing in disguise,” she says. Nine weeks after her delivery, her wound finally healed. Grappling with a health crisis has been tough. “I feel very disconnected to whoever (I) was before,” Christie says. “I’ve gotten stronger, but I’ve also changed so much because going through a traumatic experience like that changes the way you view things.” Christie is sharing her story to raise awareness of amniotic fluid embolism and offer others hope. “It’s rare, but it does happen,” she says. “There were so many miracles that led up to me living instead of dying and we’re grateful.” This article was originally published on TODAY.com Source link #Mom #clinically #***** #minutes #woke #gave #birth #triplets Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
