  1. Google Chrome for iOS Is Getting a ‘Search Screen with Google Lens’ Feature Google Chrome for iOS Is Getting a ‘Search Screen with Google Lens’ Feature Google Chrome and the Google app for iOS are getting a new visual lookup feature. Announced on Wednesday, the new feature uses Google Lens to let users run visual queries on whatever is visible on the screen. The new search feature works similarly to Circle to Search which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to let users perform several actions such as looking up elements on the screen, translating text, and even identifying a song playing on the device. The Mountain View-based tech giant highlighted that the new feature will also support AI Overviews. Google Chrome Will Now Support Visual Lookup via Lens In a blog post, the tech giant claimed that Google Lens is used for more than 20 billion visual searches every month. Now the company is expanding its functionality and offering iPhone users new ways to use the tool. Google Chrome for iOS is now being upgraded with the Google Lens-powered visual search feature. This is being called “Search Screen with Google Lens”. The feature works across the app and supports all web pages. The tech giant said users can draw, highlight, or tap on an object to instantly run a visual lookup. This will eliminate the need to screenshot pages and open the Lens app separately to search. To use the feature, users will need to tap the three-dot menu at the bottom right corner of the browser. There, they will be able to see the new option in the listed items. By selecting “Search Screen with Google Lens”, users can highlight any part of the screen and a bottom sheet of Google Search will pop up showing the information. The same feature is also being added to the Google app for iOS. After entering a web page via Search, users can tap the three-dot menu on the top right to find the “Search this Screen” option and quickly run a visual search. Notably, the company highlighted that AI Overviews will be automatically activated whenever a relevant query is made via Lens. This will allow users to quickly find the information without the need to scroll or tap on a link. 3. Walmart (WMT) Q4 2025 earnings Walmart (WMT) Q4 2025 earnings Walmart on Thursday said holiday-quarter revenue rose about 4% and e-commerce sales shot up 20% in the U.S., as growth in store pickup and home deliveries and gains with upper-income shoppers boosted results. In the fiscal year ahead, the discounter said it expects net sales to grow 3% to 4% and adjusted operating income to grow between 3.5% to 5.5% on a constant currency basis. The company said that includes a 150 basis point, or 1.5 percentage point, headwind from acquiring smart TV company Vizio and following a leap year in 2024. In an interview with CNBC, Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey described consumer spending patterns as “steady” and said “there’s not any sharp changes that we’ve seen.” Yet he acknowledged “there’s far from certainty in the geopolitical landscape.” About two-thirds of what Walmart sells is made, grown or assembled in the U.S. Yet if tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada take effect, he said Walmart is “not going to be completely immune.” “We’ve lived in a tariff environment for the last seven or eight years, and we’ll do what we know how to do,” he said. “We’ll work with suppliers. We’ll lean into our private brand. We’ll shift supply where necessary to try to take advantage of lower costs that we can then pass on to consumers.” Since Walmart is not sure if the tariffs will take effect next month, the company did not factor them into its guidance, Rainey said. Here is what the big-box retailer reported for the fiscal fourth quarter compared with Wall Street’s estimates, according to a survey of analysts by LSEG: Earnings per share: 66 cents adjusted vs 64 cents expectedRevenue: $180.55 billion vs. $180.01 billion expected In the three-month ******* that ended Jan. 31, Walmart’s net income fell to $5.25 billion, or 65 cents per share, compared with $5.49 billion or 68 cents per share in the year-ago *******. Revenue rose from $173.39 billion in the year-ago quarter. Comparable sales, an industry metric also known as same-store sales, increased 4.6% for Walmart’s U.S. business and 6.8% for Sam’s Club, excluding fuel. Walmart’s e-commerce sales in the U.S. soared 20% compared with the year-ago *******. That marked the 11th straight quarter of double-digit gains. Global e-commerce sales rose 16%. In the Walmart U.S. segment, customers’ store visits and purchases climbed, as transactions rose 2.8% and average ticket increased 1.8% year over year. As Walmart is the top grocer in the U.S., investors often view it as a barometer of consumer health. Investors have tried to parse whether softer U.S. retail sales in January were a blip or warning sign. Wall Street also is trying to understand the potential impact of policy decisions, such as tariffs, on consumer spending. Walmart’s e-commerce growth and newer initiatives worked in its favor in the fourth quarter. Its advertising business and third-party marketplace are small compared to Amazon’s, but have posted gains and driven higher margins than Walmart’s retail business. Rainey pointed to double-digit gains in the fourth quarter in global advertising, membership income and Walmart’s fulfillment services segment, which packs and ships orders to third-party sellers. “These are all higher margin, faster growing parts of our business where the math is just suggesting that our margins are going up over time,” he said. “And frankly, I don’t see any end to this.” Walmart also hiked its dividend by 13% to 94 cents per share, the largest increase in over a decade. As of Wednesday’s close, shares of Walmart are up about 83% over the past year. Shares closed on Wednesday at $104.00, up about 15% so far this year and outpacing the approximately 4% gains of the S&P 500 during the same *******. 5. What is a Tensor Core? The Nvidia GPU technology explained What is a Tensor Core? The Nvidia GPU technology explained If you’ve ever wondered what a Tensor Core is then you’re not alone. Whether you’re in the market for a new graphics card or want to understand your Nvidia graphics card better, the tech is essential in powering today’s demanding games. Tensor Cores can be found inside all of the best graphics cards and the best 4K graphics cards, as this is the technology that utilizes what’s known as mixed computing, a combination of algorithmically driven (or AI-powered) and native hardware to produce results that far exceed standard rasterization, allowing for higher framerates in higher resolutions. In short, Tensor Cores are the hardware that power Nvidia’s AI upscaling tech known as DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). But how do they work? Furthermore, how important are they for PC gaming and intensive productivity tasks? That’s what TechRadar is here to answer. What is a Tensor Core? (Image credit: Nvidia) Tensor Cores are specially developed hardware units inside of an Nvidia graphics card that enable mixed-precision computing by accelerating deep-learning AI workloads, and are trained across a vast neural network. They are far more power efficient than the CUDA cores of your graphics card and able to handle mixed-precision operations which would otherwise take considerably longer to complete. History of Tensor Cores (Image credit: Konstantin Savusia / Shutterstock) Nvidia first used Tensor Cores on its Volta lineup of data centres in 2017, which were later expanded into graphics cards. The first GPUs to use Tensor Cores were the Nvidia Titan V, Nvidia Quadro GB100, and the Nvidia Titan V CEO Edition, all of which utilized 640 first-generation Tensor Cores to accelerate their AI workloads limited to FP16 (or a 16-bit floating point). Second-generation Tensor cores were launched inside Turing (RTX 20 series) graphics cards, which greatly expanded the precisions up to Int1, Int4, and Int8 as well as FP16. Turing GPUs were also the first to utilize Ray Tracing cores (RT cores) which made the real-time lightning technique possible in video games (the combination of the technology would later come to be known as having “RTX on”). Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. For productivity use, these faster and more versatile Tensor Cores were found inside RTX Quadro video cards, primarily used in workstations for CAD, content creation, scientific calculations, and machine learning. Third-generation Tensor Cores were built inside Ampere (RTX 30 series) graphics cards. As well as Int1, Int4, Int8, and F16, the computational capabilities were expanded to include TF32, FP64, and bfloat16 precisions, too. These new formats greatly improved the types of machine learning (and deep learning), with the TF32 format being up to 20x faster than previous mixed-learning models. These Tensor Cores were also essential in driving Nvidia DLSS 2.0 as the AI-accelerated temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) became far cleaner and more widely adopted. While the first version of DLSS, launched in February 2019, could be blurry and imprecise, the wider amount of precisions possible through this generation of the Tensor Cores meant far higher framerates with hardware-intensive software, such as ray-traced games, particularly in higher resolutions such as 1440p and 4K. As Nvidia transitioned from primarily a computing/hardware company to an AI software developer, a similar trend could be seen with the fourth-generation Tensor Cores. A primary use of accelerated AI technologies is generative AI, large language models, chatbots, and Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, In gaming terms, the fourth-generation Tensor Cores also made DLSS 3’s Frame Generation a possibility, something that became exclusive to Ada (RTX 40 series) graphics cards and was not supported on previous RTX GPU generations. Provided developers worked with Nvidia to hand-tune a specific hardware-based algorithm for their games, this tech analyzes and then generates additional frames alongside traditional rasterization happening naturally. This results in higher framerates, even though it is hotly debated whether these are “real frames” or not. Tensor Core utilization for gaming (Image credit: Nvidia/CD Projekt Red) That leads us to 2025, with the recent introduction of Blackwell architecture graphics cards featuring fifth-generation Tensor Cores. Nvidia has stated its latest architectural technology “delivers 30X speedup” when compared to its previous generation due to the new precision formats supported. For gaming, this advancement makes Multi Frame Generation a possibility, which is a feature exclusive to RTX 50 series graphics cards (such as the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080). We’ve been consistently impressed by what MFG can do for 8K gaming. Tensor Cores work alongside CUDA cores in gaming (AI software in tandem with hardware) to render video games at a lower native resolution and then upscale into a higher one. This is how RTX graphics cards can produce playable framerates of 60 and beyond in resolutions like 4K and 8K while utilizing hardware-intensive rendering techniques such as ray tracing. As DLSS (and other RTX technologies) have been continually improved over the years, things now look as close to native performance as possible, something that has been favored by many gamers. How do Tensor Cores work? (Image credit: Nvidia) Tensor Cores are specifically-designed hardware units found inside Nvidia graphics cards primarily to accelerate AI workloads, such as matrix multiplication, that make machine/deep learning possible. As the technology has become more sophisticated from 2017 through to 2025, with the launch from the first-generation to the current fifth-generation offerings, they now facilitate significantly faster performance when compared to what’s possible from regular GPU cores. The main feature of Tensor Cores is mixed precision computing to perform calculations with lower precision data with greater accuracy than before. As the technology has matured, the types of high-precision output have deepened significantly. Additionally, Tensor Cores are optimized for Matrix Multiply-Accumulate operations (solving complicated math equations) through their tile-based processing. These tiles are stacked, meaning parallel (instead of linear) computations can happen per core, resulting in faster overall workloads. The operations of Tensor Cores can be broken down into three distinct steps: data loading, mixed-precision calculations, and then the output through accumulation. All of this comes together to fulfil what is known as AI acceleration, which has a myriad of uses in gaming (DLSS, Frame Generation, MFG, and Ray Reconstruction) to the training of neural networks, machine learning, deep learning, and large language models. 6. ‘Old Guy’ Review: The Veteran and the Rookie ‘Old Guy’ Review: The Veteran and the Rookie “Old Guy” is billed as an action movie but it is actually more of a fantasy film. It imagines a world in which an aging hit man kills his targets without consequence before retreating to nightclubs where scads of beautiful young women compete to accompany him home. Presumably Danny Dolinski (Christoph Waltz) has been enjoying such a lifestyle for decades. But when the movie begins, his bosses consider his contract killing career to be approaching its natural conclusion because of the joint pain afflicting his trigger finger. Dolinski would prefer to stay in the game, but Opal, the director of The Company (Ann Akinjirin) insists that he serve as a mentor to Wihlborg (Cooper Hoffman), a promising, and youthful, assassin. So begins a familiar story of the veteran and the rookie, updated to include snide observations about Gen-Z style trends. Between this odd couple, Wihlborg is designed as sympathetic — he is given an arbitrary back story in foster care — but Dolinski is clearly meant as our hero, joined by a damsel in a low-cut dress (Lucy Liu). The director Simon West strains to frame Dolinski as a witty cad whose embittered demeanor (and murderous vocation) belie a sturdy moral code. Beyond the stale plot and groaners that make up the dialogue, “Old Guy” suffers from haphazard pacing, as if every third scene was cut out in postproduction. Watching, one wonders who this movie is for — even within the target demographic stated in the title. Old Guy Rated R for guys shooting guns. Running time: 1 hour 44 minutes. 10. ‘We don’t tolerate … acts of animal cruelty like this’ ‘We don’t tolerate … acts of animal cruelty like this’ An unlawful hook and snare line found in an *********** riverbed in Queensland has been interpreted by wildlife authorities as an individual’s attempt to deliberately “capture and kill” a large crocodile, Yahoo News reported. Senior wildlife officer Tony Frisby for Queensland’s Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation (DETSI) said the department “strongly believes that someone set the baited hook” to catch and kill a crocodile. After investigating, officers reported an estimated “3.8-metre crocodile on the bank of the river.” The Nature Conservation Act 1992 protects crocodiles in Australia from harm and death with a maximum penalty of $36,293. If caught in possession of a deceased crocodile or parts of a deceased crocodile, this could also be grounds for a fine. In the past, crocodiles were hunted to near extinction in the region, per Australia Zoo. Thanks to the Nature Conservation Act, their population has increased dramatically to safe numbers. The possible extinction or population decline of crocodiles has dire implications for the ecosystem of the country. They play a vital role in regulating populations of other animals like fish, per the Croc Bus and World Animal Protection. Damaging the ecosystem by removing keystone species does more than just harm wildlife. It can also disrupt food chains, ultimately culminating in a decline of food resources for humans. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? In searching the river for more hooks, authorities luckily did not find any. “We don’t tolerate poaching or acts of animal cruelty like this, and anyone with information about the setting of this baited hook and line is urged to contact the department,” Frisby said. Respecting wildlife authorities and laws is crucial when it comes to mitigating instances like these. If wildlife is a threat to you, there are ways to deal with it safely, such as contacting the local or national animal rescue and protection services. 16. Republican Latinos are rising in California. Now there’s a caucus for them Republican Latinos are rising in California. Now there’s a caucus for them On election day last year, a conversation with family members confirmed Suzette Martinez Valladares’ hunch that Latino Republicans were about to shock California. “I swear they were socialists when they were, like, 20,” the Acton-based state senator said of her relatives while we ate lunch at a restaurant in Santa Ana. “But then [one of them] sent me a photo of voting for [Donald] Trump. I was like, ‘What is going on here? I never thought I would see this day.’” To Valladares’ right was fellow GOP Latina Kate Sanchez, an Assembly member whose district stretches from Mission Viejo to Temecula. “He can’t afford to buy a house and is frustrated,” Valladares continued about her family member, whom she declined to identify because he’s not publicly out as a Trump voter. “And I think a lot of Latino voters felt the same way. So I think it’s a huge opening for Republicans in the state, and I think it’s the beginning of a shift that I want to make sure we’re jumping on.” Read more: Opinion: Why California’s Latino voters are shifting toward Trump and Republicans The two are founders and co-chairs of the new California Hispanic Legislative Caucus, the latest attempt at an official group for Latino Republicans in the statehouse. It formed as a response to the 51-year-old Latino Legislative Caucus, a Sacramento powerhouse that has never admitted GOP members. “When you’re not welcome at the table, you learn to build your own,” said Sanchez, 36. She’s quieter than Valladares and reels off political cliches that nevertheless land with conviction. “So I think it was a blessing. When we were reelected [last year], we were like, ‘The timing is now, and we’re doing it.’” Although Kamala Harris handily won the state, some of Trump’s biggest gains over his 2020 run were in Latino-heavy counties in the Central Valley and L.A. County cities like Downey and Huntington Park. Valladares, who previously served as an Assembly member, won an open Senate seat. Meanwhile, Jeff Gonzalez and Leticia Castillo scored upsets in their Inland Empire Assembly races against Latino Democrats backed by the area’s long-standing political machine. Those wins pushed the number of Latino GOP legislators in Sacramento to nine, more than doubling the previous high of four, set two years ago. Latinos now make up nearly a third of Sacramento GOP legislators — a once-unthinkable scenario in a state where the party turned off Latino voters for a generation by pursuing a slew of xenophobic measures in the 1990s. It’s a legacy that Sanchez and Valladares freely acknowledge that opponents will throw at them. “I think the Republican Party has probably missed a lot of those opportunities” in the past, said Sanchez, as Valladares nodded in agreement. “But we’re going to be doing a great job.” “I think we’ve done a lot of work in the last decade,” added Valladares, 44, who is more plainspoken and sharper-tongued than her co-chair. “And those seeds that we planted have now grown.” The Hispanic GOP caucus is forming at a time when Democrats still hold a supermajority in both of the state’s legislative chambers, while the Republican Party nationally has soured on anything with even a hint of multiculturalism. Nevertheless, the two are confident they’re onto something. “Sacramento doesn’t know how to read the room,” Valladares said. “My race was supposed to have been super close. I was preparing to win by five votes, not five points.” “I want to say the elephant in the room,” Sanchez added. Trump had been a “tough issue” with Latino voters — but “not so much anymore.” Then-Assemblymember Suzette Martinez Valladares during a legislative session at the Capitol in 2022. (Rich Pedroncelli / Associated Press) Of the two, Sanchez had the more conventional conservative upbringing, growing up in Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo before attending a small Catholic college in Rhode Island. After working at a conservative think tank and as a staffer for Republican U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, Sanchez ran for an Assembly seat in 2022 against then-Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn. He finished first in the primary as the establishment favorite and had a sizeable cash advantage going into the general election. “I didn’t quite fit the mold of what the party expected me to be like and look like,” Sanchez, who is of Italian and ******** descent, said before smiling. “It’s the worst thing to tell a Latina.” She wore out three pairs of walking shoes to win a wealthy district where Latinos make up 22% of the population, calling her victory a “testament to a need, a momentum and openness to have a Hispanic female” in the seat. In the 2024 election, she crushed her Democratic opponent by 23 percentage points. Valladares grew up in Sylmar, “the most conservative” member in a working-class family where her father’s ******** American side leaned to the right while her maternal Puerto Rican relatives were “very progressive.” Morning drives to Sylmar High with an uncle introduced her to Rush Limbaugh. She didn’t appreciate when a counselor insisted she should register as a Democrat because she was Latina. Read more: Barred from joining Democratic-led Latino Caucus, California Republican lawmakers create their own “I was represented by Democrats at every level, from city council to county supervisor,” Valladares said. “On Sundays, my park would be closed because of the gangs. I remember a bunch of my friends having kids when I was in 11th grade. So I’m like, ‘If we’re represented by Democrats who are in total power, why is my community still suffering?’” In an alternative universe, Valladares nevertheless could have been a part of the fabled San Fernando Valley political machine that has placed Latinos from the region at every level of political office for the past 30 years, from school boards to the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Alex Padilla. Pioneering Valley politician Cindy Montañez helped Valladares with her college entrance essay, starting a friendship that lasted until Montañez’s death in 2023. Valladares also volunteered on the unsuccessful 2001 L.A. City Council race of then-Assemblymember Tony Cárdenas, who later won election to the council and went on to represent the Pacoima area in Congress for 12 years. She described Cárdenas as a “great person” and felt the 2001 race was a “sad loss.” But her experience on the Democrat’s campaign only solidified her choice to register as a Republican. “I didn’t feel like they were addressing the economic issues of small-business owners like my dad,” Valladares said. “I feel like I gave in my younger life the Democrat Party every opportunity to convince me that they were supporting me. And they didn’t.” I asked the two what Latino Democratic lawmakers in California don’t get about the political moment for Latinos right now. “There’s a hyper-focus on immigration,” said Sanchez, whose first husband was once undocumented. “Hispanics are so much more of the fabric of California than that one issue. And I think it’s a disservice to everybody if all we focus on is that one issue.” Orange County Assemblymember Kate Sanchez was releected for a second term in November. (Gustavo Arellano / Los Angeles Times) Latino Legislative Caucus members would argue that they’ve worked on behalf of all working-class Californians, I pointed out. Valladares again brought up her Trumper relative. Last summer, Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed an Assembly bill that would have made California residents without papers eligible for a state program that allows first-time home buyers to apply for up for $150,000 in no-interest loans. “[The relative] was so infuriated” with the bill, the senator said. “He so wants to buy a house. Then this? That is probably what got him to vote for Trump.” Sanchez and Valladares support Trump’s call to deport whom the latter described as “the worst of the worst” but not a full-scale deportation of all unauthorized immigrants. They want to see immigration reform but argue it’s a federal issue. Besides, they point out, the Latinos they talk to care more about “kitchen table” issues. It’s a claim supported by years of polls revealing that immigration is of lower importance to Latinos than Democratic lawmakers and immigrant advocacy groups would have the public believe. And enmity against ******** immigration among Latinos in California is higher than it has been in decades. “It’s their wedge issue. It’s their emotional issue,” Valladares said of Democrats. “And when you don’t have voices that look like us giving an alternate perspective or opinion or policy fix, they dominate it.” She let a beat pass. “They’re used to owning that space. No more.” “You said it well!” Sanchez said. Read more: Column: Amid Trump Latino gains, is it time to let Republicans into California Latino Legislative Caucus? The Hispanic Legislative Caucus has yet to meet, but the two are already planning. Valladares is inviting Latino GOP pioneers to become emeritus members — people like former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado and Rod Pacheco, who became the first Latino Republican elected to Sacramento in over a century when he won his Inland Empire Assembly seat in the 1990s. Sanchez is outlining a legislative package focusing on what she describes as the “mandate on affordability, security and good education” that she said Latinos voted for in 2024. The two say they want to allow anyone to join the caucus, regardless of political affiliation. But they also want to help Latino Republicans win local elections and create a bench to ensure that politicians like them remain a presence in Sacramento for years to come, instead of a ridiculed anomaly. “We are going to champion issues that we know that California Hispanics care about,” Sanchez said when I asked for her concluding message to Latino voters. Valladares directed her closing thoughts to their frenemies over at the Latino Legislative Caucus. “Our caucus is here to work on these critical issues on behalf of Californians,” she said. “We’re going to do it with or without you.” Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. 19. Killing Floor 3 Release Date—Platforms, Editions, and Price Killing Floor 3 Release Date—Platforms, Editions, and Price Tripwire Interactive has finally blessed us with Killing Floor 3 and a release date nine years after KF2. The second title delighted in the decimation and deliberate dissection of Zeds. Now, they’re back, and we’re back too to deliver unto them a three-course meal of bravado, bullets, and brain splatters. Killing Floor has always been no-nonsense in what it’s trying to accomplish. Waves of Zombies (Zeds) trying to kill you, and us trying to repel their unsubtle advances with extreme violence and explosions. I spent many hours in Killing Floor 2 eliminating Zeds, earning cash, upgrading my gear, and having a tense showdown with the final boss. It would appear Killing Floor 3 is more of the same, and that’s a good thing. So let’s dive into the latest entry in the series and check out its launch date, platforms, and much more. Killing Floor 3 Release Date Take that! Credit to Tripwire Interactive March 25 is Killing Floor 3’s scheduled release date—unless something changes at the last minute. Yes, March 2025 is a busy month. But, if there’s one thing we need, it’s a ferocious first-person shooter in the mix. Killing Floor 3 looks to distance itself from the pack with an affordable entry point and unique selling attributes. Killing Floor 3 Platforms PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC are the listed platforms for Killing Floor 3. I find most games releasing in 2025 are doing the same thing: Releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It’s rare to see old-gen ports, and even rarer for a third-party title to get Nintendo Switch attention. The eventual Nintendo Switch 2 could change things of course, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Killing Floor 3 Editions & Price Killing Floor 3 has three different editions to consider: Standard Edition ($39.99/£34.99), Deluxe Edition ($59.99/£51.99), and Elite Nightfall Edition ($79.99/£69.99). There’s no ultra-deluxe-premium edition for Killing Floor 3. But there are physical copies if you want to go that route—although not all editions are available in physical form. Check out each edition and its price here. Killing Floor 3 Edition Price Standard Edition $39.99 or £34.99 Deluxe Edition $59.99 or £51.99 Elite Nightfall Edition $79.99 or £69.99 March 2025 is shaping up to be a chaotic month for video game releases. Alongside Killing Floor 3, brace yourselves for the release of Atomfall, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Split Fiction, Tales of the Shire A Lord of the Rings Game, and WWE 2K25. What are you hoping to get from Killing Floor 3? Can it surpass the second entry in terms of unprecedented levels of gratuitous gore and gunplay? Leave a comment below. 22. I’ve become a ChatGPT expert by levelling up my AI prompts – here are my 8 top tips for success I’ve become a ChatGPT expert by levelling up my AI prompts – here are my 8 top tips for success Does the way you write a prompt really make a difference when you’re interacting with an AI tool, like ChatGPT? The short answer is, yes. A lot of factors contribute to the response you get from an AI tool or chatbot, including the way it was initially created and the data it’s been “trained” on. But one of the most important factors is how you communicate with it – this is where prompting comes in. A prompt is essentially a question or an instruction that you give an AI tool to generate a response. It can be a short and simple query, a longer, more structured request, or even a series of guidelines, all with the aim of shaping the output and, ultimately, getting what you want. Which means the way you write these prompts directly impacts how clear, relevant, and useful the AI’s response is. When I first tried using ChatGPT, I spoke to it like a friend, firing off casual and frantic questions and expecting intuitive responses. While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with this approach, I soon realized that being more intentional about how I wrote my prompts gave me much better answers. This is what’s called ‘prompt engineering’, a growing field that’s become so important, people are building careers out of it. (Image credit: Future) The science of prompts Everyone has a slightly different approach when it comes to what makes a great prompt – and this can vary depending on what you need and what tool you’re using. But, generally, the effectiveness of AI responses has three core elements to consider. The first is context, so an AI tool will perform at its best when it knows enough background to understand what you’re asking it. The more relevant information included, the more accurate and useful the response is likely to be. Then there’s specificity, so the more clear and precise your prompt is, the better your result will be. Vague prompts tend to produce generic or less relevant answers Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Finally, consider structure. If you put time into thinking how you’re wording the prompt, what order you’re shaping it, whether you’re using bullet points or numbers to divide up text, etc, you’re likely to get a more relevant response. It’s also worth understanding how the AI tool you’re using actually works. For example, chatbots that use Large Language Models (LLMs), which includes ChatGPT, Claude and Google Gemini, generate their responses largely based on probability. Which means they predict the likely sequence of words based on the input you’ve provided. So any changes you make to the way you write a prompt, even if you think it’s generally asking the same sort of thing, could deliver really different results. Of course, some people have exaggerated the complexity of prompt engineering to sell courses or consultancy services. However, research shows that a well-constructed prompt does yield better AI-generated results. For example, one study found that a well considered prompt can increase the quality of an LLM response by 57.7% and the accuracy by 67.3%. But you don’t need a research paper to see this for yourself. Try using your preferred AI chatbot to answer a question using a short, vague prompt –– then refine it with more details and instructions. I bet you’ll be surprised by how much the response improves. How do you write better AI prompts? People have conducted research, created courses and made lots of video content to help you demystify the perfect prompt. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some key lessons beyond context, specificity and structure to consider. Here’s some of the most popular advice: Give examples: In prompt engineering, this is called few-shot prompting. It involves providing the AI with examples before asking it to generate a response. For instance, if you want a well-structured list of travel tips, you might first present two or three sample tips and then ask the AI to generate more in the same style. Specify the audience: Define who the content is for. For example, if you’re asking for skincare advice, specify whether it’s for dermatologists, beauty enthusiasts, or time-poor individuals with acne. This helps the AI tailor its response. Explain who you are: As well as specifying who the output is for, tell the AI tool who you are can make the output more relevant. For example, saying “I’m a teacher creating a quiz for my students” will lead to a more structured, educational response than a generic request for quiz questions. Tell it the format you want: Make it clear whether you want the output to be presented as an article, script, bullet point list or guide. You can also specify the word count limit to fine-tune the response. Define the tone: If you’re writing for a specific purpose, give details about the tone you want. Defining the style upfront helps refine the AI’s output. You can also provide examples or links to reference materials for better accuracy. Use natural language: While structured prompts are important, over-complicating them can backfire. AI models are designed to interpret natural language, so keeping prompts clear, direct, and conversational will give you the best results. Ask the AI tool to show its working out: If you need AI to provide reasoning or logical steps, ask it to show its thought process. This technique, known as chain-of-thought prompting, is useful for tasks like explaining how it’s worked our a problem or outlining an argument. Refine as you go: Even with well-crafted prompts, the first output may not be perfect. AI works best if you refine – if a response is too vague or off-track, rethink your prompt by specifying the tone, level of detail, or word choice. Small adjustments can make a big difference. AI tools can be incredibly useful, but they’re far from perfect. Regardless of which AI model you use, the quality of its output depends on the clarity and structure of your input. Whether you’re using AI for brainstorming, automating tasks, creating a workout plan, or proofreading an article, thoughtful prompting leads to better, more accurate results. 23. Exoplanet WASP-121 b’s Atmosphere Features Iron Rains, Jet Streams, and More Exoplanet WASP-121 b’s Atmosphere Features Iron Rains, Jet Streams, and More An exoplanet with extreme weather conditions, including iron rain and violent winds, has been identified around 900 light-years away. The planet, WASP-121 b, has been found to experience intense atmospheric activity, with wind speeds surpassing those of the strongest hurricanes known in the solar system. Astronomers studying this ultra-hot Jupiter have detected powerful jet streams that transport vaporised metals across different layers of its atmosphere, contributing to unique and complex weather patterns. Atmospheric Phenomena Observed According to a study published in Nature, observations were conducted using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The findings reveal that elements such as iron and titanium are carried across the planet by strong atmospheric currents, leading to complex weather patterns. Dr Julia Victoria Seidel, a researcher at Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, said in an official press release that the planet’s climate challenges existing meteorological understanding. As reported, WASP-121 b belongs to a category of planets known as ultra-hot Jupiters. With a mass approximately 1.2 times that of Jupiter, it orbits its star in just 30 Earth hours. Due to its close proximity, the planet is tidally locked, meaning one side is exposed to continuous daylight while the other remains in perpetual darkness. On the dayside, extreme temperatures cause metals such as iron to vaporise. These elements are then transported by high-speed winds to the nightside, where they condense and fall as liquid metal rain. A jet stream spanning half of the planet has also been detected, moving atmospheric material between the two hemispheres. Dr Seidel explained to [news source] that a separate flow in the lower atmosphere moves gas from the hotter to the cooler side, an unprecedented meteorological phenomenon. Advanced Observations Using VLT The ESPRESSO instrument on the VLT was used to study the atmosphere in detail, allowing scientists to map different atmospheric layers. Light from multiple telescopes was combined to analyse fainter details of the planet’s atmospheric composition. Tracking the movement of hydrogen, sodium, and iron provided insights into wind patterns at varying altitudes. Dr Leonardo A. dos Santos, a researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute, told [news source] that such detailed observations would be challenging with space telescopes, highlighting the importance of ground-based research. A surprising discovery was the presence of titanium in the planet’s atmosphere, which had not been detected in previous studies. Researchers believe that the element was hidden in deeper atmospheric layers. Dr Bibiana Prinoth, a researcher at Lund University, told [news source] that studying such distant planets in this level of detail is remarkable. These findings contribute to the growing understanding of exoplanetary atmospheres, demonstrating the extreme and diverse conditions beyond the solar system. 24. After 88 years, Lafayette staple Kenny’s Shoe Repair to close its doors After 88 years, Lafayette staple Kenny’s Shoe Repair to close its doors LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The tips of Rick Roswarski’s hands are ****** with shoe grease, the darkness from a shoe sole seeping into the deep lines in his fingers and his hands gently shaking as he picked up a boot. The familiar, high-pitched scraping sound of a cobbling machine rings loud in the background as his son-in-law begins work on another repair. The boots he grabbed aren’t just any ordinary pair. It’s a Thoroughgood boot, or, as he described it, the only boot his combat-injured Uncle Bob would wear. He examines the boot more, giving notice to the right arch on its sole. “He got out of the Army, his right arch was crushed (when) something came down on it,” he said. “This sold back, oh goodness, ‘55? 1956? … And since it was filled, it held his arch. It’s the only boot that would ever do that. He never changed boots.” Corey Guthrie and Rick Roswarski smile while talking about the age of a sole being used for a project Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at Kenny’s Shoe Repair in Lafayette, Ind. Guthrie said the soles are most likely from the ‘40s or ‘50s. For the last six decades, Roswarski has been repairing shoes for the Lafayette area and beyond. But at the end of this month, Rick will turn 70. And as he enters into the new decade, he looks to leave the last five behind him. Kenny’s Shoe Repair and Orthopedic rests beside Loeb Stadium. Dated red brick lines its exterior and a wooden shingle roof that hangs past the brick foundation sits like a hat atop its head. After 88 years in business, Kenny’s will close for good on March 31. The family business Cobbling has been in the Roswarski family since Rick was a boy, who learned it from his father, Ken. But the store did more than just repair shoes. They repaired just about anything, a motivation that’s continued to this day. In addition to the shoe repair side of the job was dying clothes. But this was long before the days of tie dye. Rick’s dad used a liquid dye and compressed it into a spray, but what he didn’t know was that the spray was carcinogenic. “Dad was an old-time cobbler. The way he was taught, you could throw them in your mouth and take them out of your mouth one at a time and just nail them. He was really, really good at it. You learned a lot of this in the Navy, but,” he stops a second, his voice becoming quieter. “(The spray) transferred from the nails to the inside of his mouth. So when he ate food, he took it straight in, and he had cirrhosis of the liver from that. He died from that.” Ken died at 42. Rick was just 14 years old. After school, Rick and his 19-year-old brother, Ken, helped manage the store, and the day’s earnings went to support the family. Rick would end up throwing all those dyes away. Years later, Rick left the business to go work for the federal government as a grain inspector for four and a half years, leaving Ken to run the store. But being a grain inspector didn’t sit right with Rick, he said, and maybe some familiar scenery is what he needed most. He found his way coming back to the shoe repair shop, only to see his brother putting shoes into cardboard boxes the minute he stepped through. Ken wanted to be a carpenter and was looking to sell the business. What he didn’t know was that he was talking to a potential buyer. “I went down to the bank, borrowed what was necessary, came back and I said, ‘You’re good to go.’” Rick bought the store and became its owner in 1977. He was 22 years old. ‘We can fix anything’ Shoe repair may be what the business markets itself for, but it’s not where the repairs stop. “We can fix anything,” Jenny Roswarski, Rick’s wife, said. “From Jeep tops, boat tops, trampolines, suitcases, purses.” Jenny and Rick Roswarski look over the sole on a pair of boots they are working on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at Kenny’s Shoe Repair in Lafayette, Ind. It seemed as if she could go on, but there is a line. “If we look at something and know, even if we fix that part, the other parts are going to break … you don’t want to fix (it),” she said. “I could fix this little part, but the rest of it’s going to break.” In the back of the business and pushing past several dozens of clothing designs ranging from professional attire to a purple, starry purple blouse hanging on the racks above a doorway, is its clothing operation, where employees like Laura Killian work on anything from stitching up deteriorated leather jackets to creating new creations from the tatters of other clothes. Among the strangest things Killian said she’s repaired was a 100-year-old leather rhino. “Corey, did you remember the leather rhinoceros that I worked on?” Killian asked Rick’s son-in-law, Corey Guthrie. “Nope,” he said. “It didn’t stab me in the butt or anything.” Killian found her way to Kenny’s after being a nail technician for almost 15 years. They met through a ballroom dance instructor. She said she was trying to get out of the profession already and the opportunity allowed her to make the shift. But ballroom dance was responsible for more than one relationship at the company. After his divorce, Rick found his way into ballroom dance because he “always wanted to learn to waltz.” Six months later, Jenny, a then-widow, joined. “It was interesting, because even from across the room, it was kind of like, ‘Hm,’” she said, laughing. Jenny and Rick started dating in 2009 and married in 2013. After about a year of dating, Jenny quit her job and began working at Kenny’s full time, something she described as a trial by fire. “I knew about colors and things,” she said. “One of my parents had been an art major, so when I made backdrops and things, he taught me a lot, yeah, about color. And then some of it was just pure trial and error.” The future With retirement on the horizon, Rick has his sights on a vacation in his near future but also wants to start a new hobby. “Maybe kendo,” he said. “It’ll be good for my shoulders, because my shoulders are a wreck, yeah? And so it’ll be a good thing for my shoulder. I just have to start slow, yeah.” Rick and Jenny share 14 grandkids across the country who will “keep them busy.” And though Kenny’s may not remain anymore, the teachings of his father now live in Rick’s son-in-law. Kenny said he fired 14 people before he found Guthrie. “Corey’s the only one who’s been through the fire with me.” Corey Guthrie removes the heel of a boot Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at Kenny’s Shoe Repair in Lafayette, Ind. Guthrie, who Jenny called the “future shoe repair person in Lafayette,” now looks to start his own shoe repair business and is venue shopping for a new location. He said he’s playing around with different names right now, but “sole healer” has a certain ring to it.
