Six Nations: Ex-teacher Matt Sherratt asked to improve Wales’ grades
Six Nations: Ex-teacher Matt Sherratt asked to improve Wales’ grades
Sherratt’s background is very different from his predecessor. Gatland was a former All ******* hooker who has been one of world rugby’s super-coaches of the 21st century, having been involved in the international game for more than 25 years.
The New Zealander even had those gates named after him after his first successful stint in charge of Wales.
Sherratt’s route to his current role has been more modest. He was born in Gloucester with a Welsh mother but never played the game at the top level.
Nicknamed “Jockey” because of his short stature, Sherratt worked as a primary school teacher before becoming a development officer for the Rugby Football Union (RFU).
He worked in the Worcester Warriors academy before graduating to an attack coach for Bristol Bears, where he says he learned a lot from former England and Scotland boss Andy Robinson.
Stints at Cardiff and Ospreys followed before being appointed as a permanent head coach for the first time in his career at the Arms Park for the 2023-24 season.
It was a baptism of fire, where Sherratt started his first pre-season with just eight players as the financial issues of Welsh rugby bit. So he is used to adversity and dealing with crisis situations.
“I’m a teacher and my subject is rugby,” said Sherratt.
“I don’t see it any differently whether it’s international or club.
“I’ve been on a long journey from primary school teaching, community rugby coach going around schools delivering tag rugby sessions, from academy to senior and then international.
“I’m proud of that. When you first start, you worry you’re not a name or an ex-player.
“I’ve been in it long enough to see what professional rugby is about, but I’ve also got that teaching background to fall back on especially where you’ve got to read the room.”

Despite Being Shooters, Mastering Spray and Pray in Valorant Is Extremely Difficult Compared to ****** Ops 6
Despite Being Shooters, Mastering Spray and Pray in Valorant Is Extremely Difficult Compared to ****** Ops 6
When talking about competitive games, two of the most popular games that come to mind are Valorant and Call of Duty, for completely different reasons. While both games share the genre of tactical shooters, they differ heavily in one department: shooting mechanics.
Both the games have very different shooting mechanics. | Image Credit: Riot Games
In Valorant, where precision and controlled bursts are the name of the game, attempting a spray is not only ineffective but also often leads to frustration. On the other hand, in ****** Ops 6 players can embrace the spray-and-pray mentality, giving players more freedom and predictability with their weapons.
The core difference in shooting mechanics between Valorant and ****** Ops 6
Players are often discouraged from spraying, due to RNG recoil. | Image Credit: Riot Games
To understand why spray and pray don’t work in Valorant, players need to know that the game is all about precision aiming and tactical planning. Whether players are using a vandal or phantom, they need to typically focus on bursts sprays of 2-3 bullets at a time and strafe.
The idea behind this is to not rely on recoil at all, it is all about firing in small, controlled bursts. While players often spray, it’s not effective because weapons in the game have inherent random RNG, which kicks in after the first few shots.
So while your first few shots might hit the target, the rest are up to the RNG gods to decide if they connect. This often leads to frustration from players who are switching from other games like Counter-Strike, CoD, Fortnite, etc.
On the flip side, ****** Ops 6 presents a completely different scenario. Spray control is much more forgiving and is not complete RNG. This is primarily due to two reasons: customization of guns and a predictable recoil pattern.
Both of these factors make spraying much more predictable and manageable in the game. Attachments make the most difference, as most weapons can be tuned to keep their recoil in check.
Spray and Pray often leads to frustration in Valorant
Spraying often leads to frustration. | Image Credit: Riot Games
In Valorant, spray and pray is a common tactic players find themselves in, not because it’s a reliable way to win, but because the situation can get so chaotic. Every agent has unique abilities and matches often become intense, even pushing most seasoned players into spraying, hoping to land a lucky shot.
The real problem occurs when players from other games, especially those used to spray and pray mechanics in titles like Call of Duty, try their hand here. They often find that the moment they start spraying and getting frustrated after their bullets go haywire after just a few shots.

Comment byu/_ZioMark_ from discussion inVALORANT
Comment byu/_ZioMark_ from discussion inVALORANT
While some players, particularly those with good timing or a bit of RNG on their side, spraying through smokes or blindly into a crowd of enemies might occasionally result in a multi-kill. Even that requires a keen sense of timing, map knowledge, and the ability to predict enemy movement.
For newcomers, this inconsistency of bullets (after the first few) often leads to frustration and confusion, as they struggle to adapt to the game’s more deliberate and calculated shooting style.
If players want to succeed, it is recommended to slowly get rid of old habits of spraying as the game has a learning curve. Otherwise, the matches will feel long and the game might not feel worth playing.
In the end, unlike the predictable nature of Vandal after a few bullets, one thing is certain: Valorant is an entirely different kind of tactical shooter compared to the latest installment in Call of Duty.

Nothing Phone 3a vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Company Responds After Viewers Flag Error in Camera Comparison Video
Nothing Phone 3a vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Company Responds After Viewers Flag Error in Camera Comparison Video
Nothing Phone 3a series is set to launch in global markets on March 4, and the company has already begun to tease the design and specifications of its upcoming smartphones. Both the Nothing Phone 3a and Phone 3a Pro will be equipped with telephoto cameras, and Nothing recently uploaded a video comparing the phone’s camera performance with the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The company has now addressed an error in the video that incorrectly compared footage recorded using the primary camera on Nothing’s handset with video from the ultrawide camera on the iPhone.
Nothing Phone 3a vs iPhone 16 Pro Max Comparison Video Used Footage From Different Cameras
In a video posted earlier this week, Nothing compared the video performance of the upcoming Nothing Phone 3a with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is Apple’s most expensive smartphone. The video showcased the camera performance of the unreleased smartphone, which offers support for video stabilisation.
The video comparing the camera performance of both smartphones suggested that the Nothing Phone 3a offered better video stabilisation than the iPhone 16 Pro Max when recording videos while moving. The stabilisation on the midrange phone appeared to be more consistent than the flagship iPhone model.
However, some users were quick to spot some issues with the comparison and commented that the footage from the iPhone 16 Pro (around the 5:54 mark) seemed to be recorded using the ultrawide camera, while the Phone 3a video was shot using the primary camera.
Nothing’s response on YouTube Photo Credit: Screenshot/ YouTube
The company acknowledged its error in a comment that has now been pinned under the video. The Carl Pei-led firm said that it accidentally used a clip shot using the ultrawide lens on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, comparing it with footage from the standard camera on the Nothing Phone 3a. The firm also said that it didn’t intend to mislead users with the video comparing the performance of both phones.
“Hey everyone, we shot across all lenses throughout the day (sometimes cycling one-handed on a bumpy road), and in editing, a clip shot using the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s ultrawide lens was mistakenly used in the video stabilisation comparison instead of one shot using its standard lens. There was no intent to mislead, and we’ll be more careful to ensure even greater scrutiny in future comparisons. Appreciate you all keeping us accountable!” the company said in the pinned comment.

Snow Storm Causes More Than 1,000 Crashes In North Carolina Just On Wednesday Alone
Snow Storm Causes More Than 1,000 Crashes In North Carolina Just On Wednesday Alone
53 car pileup North Carolina 1,000 crashes winter storm – WRAL
Winter storms swept through much of the South yesterday, and while the amount of snow dropped on North Carolina likely wouldn’t have bothered areas of the U.S. that regularly see more snow, it was enough to cause more than 1,000 crashes throughout the state. One particularly bad wreck even caused a series of other collisions behind it, resulting in at least 53 cars being involved in “dozens of crashes,” WRAL reports. While car wrecks are pretty common in the U.S., that figure is far higher than you’d expect on any given day. For comparison, the state reportedly only saw 185 wrecks the day before.
The 53-car pileup took place in Orange County on I-40 near the I-85 connector. A ****** at 3:02 P.M. close to Exit 261 was followed 22 minutes later by another ****** in the same location. According to local authorities, after the second wreck took place, a chain reaction of further collisions occurred. To make matters worse, two tractor-trailers jack-knifed on I-85 close to the same connector, backing up traffic even further. Then two other tractor-trailers crashed.
“I’m thankful to not be out there,” Orange County resident Melissa Perry told WRAL. “My daughter was playing in the snow earlier and heard three really loud booms.”

At Least One Fatality So Far
Icy roads in Orange County, North Carolina – Orange County Sheriff’s Office
Sadly, while most injuries from the pileup appear to be relatively minor, 10 people had to be taken to a warming center, six were taken to the hospital for treatment, and one victim has died. William Crowell Kellam allegedly crashed into 78-year-old Jerolyn Day Wilson’s car, killing him. Kellam has since been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and exceeding safe speed for conditions. I-40 appears to have since reopened, but only after being closed for hours as emergency responders worked to rescue people and clear the crashed cars out of the road.
Not all collisions in the state were contained to the roads, either. One driver reportedly lost control of their Ford F-150 and crashed into a house in Johnson County. No one was inside the house at the time of the ******, but the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment, and the structural damage to the house was significant enough for the county inspector to declare it unsafe. Thankfully, though, that appears to be the only house that was hit as a result of these storms.
Story continues
If You Don’t Need To Be On The Roads, Stay Home
There were simply too many crashes to cover every single one, but Raleigh also saw a two-car ****** that hospitalized both drivers with serious injuries after one of the drivers crossed into the oncoming lane. Additionally, an out-of-control driver hit Person County Sheriff Jason Wilborn, likely totaling their car, but Sheriff Wilborn was reportedly able to return to work without issue. Other notable crashes took place on I-40 in Cary, Dimmocks Mill Road in Orange County, along U.S. 64 near Zebulon, I-85 near Durham, I-85 in Granville County and I-95 near Benson. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear that anyone else was seriously injured in any of those wrecks.
With luck, insurance should cover most of these losses, but it’s a great reminder that unless you absolutely need to go out while there’s snow on the ground, just stay home. Especially if you live in the South where states don’t have the salt trucks and snow plows needed to keep the roads clear: the fact that there’s only a couple inches of accumulated snow is no guarantee the roads aren’t iced over. Driving in snow can certainly be fun if you have the right tires, but it really isn’t worth the risk of being hit by other drivers.

The United States Space Force just offered a rare glimpse of its shadowy X-37B space plane in orbit.
The photo, released on Thursday (Feb. 20), was taken by a camera onboard the X-37B while the secretive space plane orbited high above the African continent. One of the plane’s solar panels is visible on the left side of the photo, while what appears to be its open payload bay is visible along the top edge. The vehicle has been in orbit for well over a year now, having launched on its seventh mission on Dec. 28, 2023 atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
And now, the X-37B has notched another milestone with the Space Force’s release of this photo, the first-ever image of this space plane in orbit that has been shown to the public. While the photo contains scant details about the vehicle and what it’s currently testing, it offers a look at Earth far in the background, revealing just how high the vehicle is flying on its seventh mission.
We’ve gotten only one other glimpse at the X-37B in orbit prior to this. During the livestream of its most recent launch, a brief shot of the spacecraft deploying from Falcon Heavy’s upper stage was seen while its service module was still attached:
When the X-37B was preparing to launch on its current mission, the U.S. Space Force revealed the flight would “include operating the reusable spaceplane in new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies, and investigating the radiation effects on materials provided by NASA,” according to a Space Force statement.
Previous X-37B missions were flown in low Earth orbit, but as this photo reveals, the space plane is currently operating much farther from Earth. SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy is capable of launching payloads into geosynchronous orbit, over 22,000 miles (35,000 km) above our planet.

The X-37B recently made headlines when Space Force and Boeing, who built the vehicle, revealed that it would be testing a new “aerobraking maneuver” that uses the drag, or friction, generated by Earth’s atmosphere to change orbit more efficiently.
According to a brief U.S. Space Force statement released alongside the photo, the image was taken while the X-37B was conducting experiments some time last year. It’s unclear if those experiments were related to the aerobraking maneuvers, although the statement does reference them.
“An X-37B onboard camera, used to ensure the health and safety of the vehicle, captures an image of Earth while conducting experiments in a highly elliptical orbit in 2024,” the Space Force’s statement reads. “As part of the X-37B’s seventh mission, the vehicle executed a series of first-of-its-kind maneuvers, called aerobraking, to safely change its orbit using minimal fuel.”

While the U.S. Space Force, and its previous operator the U.S. Air Force, have been tightlipped about what the space plane does on its lengthy missions, what is known is that the X-37B serves as a test platform for new space technologies.
So far, it has hosted payloads to test solar power beaming from space, thermal protection systems and autonomous flight capabilities. According to the Space Force, the X-37B is the “most advanced re-entry spacecraft that performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies.”

The X-37B flew for a record 908 days on its sixth mission, which ended when the landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Nov. 12, 2022.
Space Force does not typically publish mission timelines, so it’s unknown when the space plane might return to Earth and mark the conclusion of its seventh flight.
China is also testing its own reusable space plane. The vehicle launched on its third mission just two weeks prior to the X-37B’s most recent launch.

Fidelity launches two all-ETF model portfolios for wealth managers
Fidelity launches two all-ETF model portfolios for wealth managers
By Suzanne McGee
(Reuters) – Fidelity Investments said on Thursday that it has launched two all-ETF model portfolios for use by wealth management firms looking for help winnowing through the rapidly growing array of funds to construct client portfolios.
The new models will offer both active and passive exchange-traded funds employing an array of investment strategies, and will include not only Fidelity ETFs but those of other providers.
The Fidelity Target Allocation ETF Model Portfolios will offer a core, multi-asset class model, while the Fidelity Target Risk ETF Model Portfolios will include liquid alternative investments and function as a complementary addition to that kind of core model.
These model portfolios have largely displaced products like fund of funds in recent years, and an estimated 85% of all models now offer open architecture, said Matt Apakarian, an analyst at Cerulli Research who tracks the space.
“Asset managers want to build something that attracts advisors to their firm, its platform and its products,” Apakarian said.
At the same time, Apakarian added, ETF issuers are more aware of the need, when building new products, to make them appealing to those constructing those models. As of the end of 2024, the U.S. market alone featured nearly 4,000 separate ETFs.
Fidelity said that the number of ETFs being selected for use in its customizable model portfolios more than doubled in the two years ended in December 2024.
According to a survey of 200 financial planners managing a total of more than $5 billion published by State Street Global Advisors in December, those wealth managers reported investing an average of 39% of those assets via models, up from 32% three years ago.
Customizeable model portfolios have been growing even more rapidly, according to a report from Morningstar published this month that estimated assets invested in these products soared 50% in a 15-month ******* ended September 30, 2024 to reach $125 billion.

Hurricanes take try-scoring frenzy over Fijian Drua
Hurricanes take try-scoring frenzy over Fijian Drua
All ******* scrumhalf Cam Roigard has helped the Hurricanes to their first Super Rugby Pacific victory, taking a thrilling win over a wasteful Fijian Drua outfit.
Roigard failed to stamp his authority on their first-round match, with the Hurricanes falling to the Crusaders.
But the No.9 set up three tries and scored one of his own among 11 for the day to bank an important 38-34 result at McLean Park in Napier on Saturday.
Roigard helped open the scoring after 38 seconds when he darted 20 metres from the back of the ruck before off-loading to flanker Du’Plessis Kirifi.
But in a sign of things to come the Drua, who were pipped by the ACT Brumbies in round one, hit back in the sixth minute, with Iliesa Junior Ratuva catching the Hurricanes defence short out wide.
The scoreboard continued to tick over with the Fijians ahead 22-19 at halftime, helped by some poor discipline by the home side with both Kirifi and Will Tucker yellow-carded.
The Drua could have been further in front but flanker Meli Derenalagi threw a wild pass that went metres forward with the tryline beckoning.
Minutes later flyhalf Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula then launched an unnecessarily long cut-out pass to Taniela Rakuro, with the winger ruled to have put his hand on the dead-ball line as he grounded the ball.
The islanders pushed the lead out to 27-19 with lock Isoa Nasilasila at the end of some quick hands but then Roigard played his hand in the 58th minute, sniping through a hole for a one-point ball game.
The Hurricanes hit the lead after 67 minutes with centre Bailyn Sullivan running onto a long Roigard pass but it was short-lived with the bold Drua scoring off a long five metre line-out to regain the lead 34-31.
With five minutes remaining, the visitors spilt the restart and the Hurricanes pounced, with Riley Hohepa bursting through the defence before finding Godfrey for the match-winner.
Co-captain Kirifi praised his team’s defence, holding the Drua out for 18 phases after fulltime to secure the victory, but 12 penalties let his team down.
“It was probably a pretty fair summary of the game,” the flanker said.
“Not gonna lie, quite disappointing, in the early parts of that game.
“We played our best rugby in the last 10 minutes, and we challenged ourselves to show a little bit of maturity once we got a lead there.
“Our biggest setback today was our discipline, and that’s myself included – that was really putting us on the back foot and giving them more opportunities than we needed to.”
After falling to a four-point loss to Brumbies in Suva last round, Drua skipper Frank Lomani was left disappointed again.
“We brought physicality but it was disappointing that we couldn’t finish the game,” he said.
“We had them in the last minute but just our execution … the Hurricanes have been a quality side for a number of years and small moments like that, they take the opportunity so we’ve got to be better.”

An asteroid big enough to destroy a city is now much less likely to collide with Earth in 2032, according to the latest NASA data.
In recent weeks, NASA had been steadily increasing the likelihood of a strike from asteroid 2024 YR4, with the odds peaking on Tuesday (Feb. 18) at 1 in 32, or a 3.1% chance. However, on Wednesday (Feb. 19), the space agency more than halved the chances to 1.5%.
The odds are likely to change again as astronomers learn more about YR4’s trajectory, but they expect the likelihood to end up at 0% once the space rock’s trajectory is confirmed.
YR4 has an estimated diameter of around 180 feet (55 meters) — that estimate has been fluctuating a bit, but the asteroid is about as wide as the leaning tower of Pisa is tall. YR4 has the potential to release around 8 megatons of energy in the event of a strike — upwards of 500 times more energy than the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in Japan. This means it’s big enough to wipe out a major city but too small to end human civilization.
There’s a tiny chance that YR4 will hit the moon instead of Earth, but it will almost certainly sail harmlessly past both when it makes its closest approach to Earth in 2032.

The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Chile recorded asteroid 2024 YR4 on Dec. 27, 2024, according to the NASA Center for Near Earth Object Studies. By January, scientists had determined that YR4 had a more than 1% chance of hitting Earth and thus warranted further attention from scientists.
With odds above 1%, YR4 also reached level 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale. The scale enables scientists to categorize the risk posed by space rocks. Level 3 is reserved for asteroids and comets capable of localized destruction, but that are expected to be later reassigned to level 0 — meaning they pose no threat — once astronomers confirm they won’t hit Earth.
An international team of scientists has been granted emergency use of the James Webb Space Telescope, humanity’s most powerful space telescope, to further assess YR4’s risk. As more observations come in over the next few months, astronomers should become more confident that YR4 poses no threat to Earth, and we will see the threat level drop to zero.

The FDA Set This Recalled Pancake And Waffle Mix To Its Highest Risk Level. Here’s What To Know.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has categorized a recalled pancake and waffle mix product from the popular Pearl Milling Company brand as a Class I recall. miodrag ignjatovic via Getty Images
A previously recalled pancake and waffle mix product from Quaker Oats’ popular Pearl Milling Company brand has now been classified at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s highest risk level due to potential allergen exposure.
In an enforcement report for the week of Feb. 19, the agency categorized the Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix as a Class I recall due to an undeclared milk allergen concern.
The FDA classifies recalled products as Class I when there’s “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” its website states.
The agency routinely updates entries in its enforcement reports with a classification once it completes a hazard assessment. It categorizes recalled products as either Class I, Class II, Class III or “not yet classified.”
The Quaker Oats Company announced in a press release last month that it had recalled some of its 2-pound boxes of Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix because the product may contain undeclared milk.
The company said that the mix, packaged in a cardboard box, had been available to purchase since Nov. 18, 2024. It was distributed to retailers in the following 11 states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah and Wisconsin.
The affected products had the Best Before Date (BBD) of Sep. 13, 2025, and the following UPC: 30000 65040.
Quaker Oats said there had been no reports of allergic reactions at the time of the recall, but thatpeople with an allergy or sensitivity to milk should discard the product immediately and not consume it. Customers who have purchased the product can call the company’s consumer relations line at 1-800-407-2247.
If you believe you’ve consumed this recalled product, it’s important to be aware of any signs of a milk allergy.
What You Should Know About Milk Allergies
Milk is one of the most common food allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
ACAAI states that some people who are allergic to milk experience an immediate reaction after consuming milk or milk protein, such as hives, vomiting, bloody stools, stomach upset or in rare cases, anaphylaxis — a severe life-threatening reaction that can impair breathing and cause the body to go into shock.
Symptoms of a milk allergy that may take more time to develop include a runny nose, watery eyes, abdominal cramps and loose stools or diarrhea, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Remember, if you have a food allergy, it’s important to carefully read labels and ask questions to avoid the food you’re allergic to. As the Mayo Clinic states, foods that are labeled “milk-free” or “non-dairy” may still contain milk proteins.
As always, consult your doctor if you believe you have an allergy or sensitivity to milk. Your health care provider may refer you to an allergist to help determine a diagnosis.

Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier review: functional and cost-effective
Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier review: functional and cost-effective
Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier: two-minute review
The Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier – also known as the Meaco 12LE – is a dehumidifier with a sideline in air purification. The 12L model I tested for this review is designed for smaller homes, but it’s also available in a 20L version for larger spaces.
The styling is functional, and it does pretty much everything you’d want a dehumidifier to do. You can adjust target humidity levels between 30% and 80%, or set it to run for a certain number of hours. I found it was a game-changer for drying laundry in my basement flat, collecting an impressive/concerning volume of water and considerably speeding up the drying process. The adjustable vents mean you can direct the airflow at your washing, too.
Rather than being the main focus, the air purification is a handy by-product of dehumidification. Air is flowing through the machine already, so pop in the supplied HEPA filter and – hey, presto! – an air purifier. However, don’t expect the data and intelligent purification you’ll find with today’s best air purifiers.
There is a setting that enables you to use it just as an air purifier – and, likewise, you can remove the filter and use it just as a dehumidifier. That actually may be a good idea in some cases, since the filter makes the dehumidifying less efficient. I like that the Meaco 12LE can be adjusted for seasonal use – I need a dehumidifier in the winter months, while in the summer an air purifier would be ideal to cope with allergies; this can be both, without taking up unnecessary space in my flat.
The USP here is that the Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier is, well, low energy, meaning it should be cheap to run. The quoted running costs of 4p per hour (or 5p for the 20L version) are certainly among the lowest I’ve found, although comparing between manufacturers can be tricky.
On test, I had no issues with the performance – everything worked as advertised, and the design functions well. Having grown used to user-friendly companion apps, I found the old-school controls here fiddly and confusing to start. Everything is set using buttons, and you’re relying on indicator lights and a basic, two-digit display to provide all the information you need. This is one situation in which you’ll definitely need to read the user manual.
My main complaint is that, quite simply, Meaco makes another product that is all-round better and costs the same. The Meaco Arete Two does everything the Low Energy version does but more efficiently (so with lower running costs), and with added functions including optional app control to sweeten the deal further. The 12LE is decent value for its upper mid-range price tag, but it’s worth shopping around in the Meaco range before buying.
That’s the short version; read on for my full Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier review.
Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier review: price & availability
List price: £198.95 for 12L, £289.99 for 20L
Available: ***
At list price, the 12L version of this dehumidifier costs just under £200, putting it at the top end of TechRadar‘s mid-range price bracket for dehumidifiers. The 20L version sits in the premium bracket, which is what I’d expect for a large-capacity model. At full price you’re getting decent value for money here, but at time of writing, the 12LE and 20LE were discounted on the Meaco website to £149 / £204 respectively, making them even better value.
When choosing a dehumidifier, it’s also worth factoring in ongoing running costs. Both LE models are designed to be cheap to run (4p or 5p per hour), which will save you money in the longer term.
However, there are models that offer added functionality for a similar price. Of these, Meaco’s own Arete Two does everything the 12LE does and more, is cheaper to run, and has basically the same list price.
You can purchase these models direct from Meaco, as well as via a selection of third-party retailers such as Amazon, John Lewis and Currys. The ****** Friday sales tend to be an especially good time to shop for appliance deals (although this might be more of a time-sensitive buy, so rest assured that discounts can be found year-round).

Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier review: design
Available in 12L (tested) and 20L versions, for different-sized spaces
Combination dehumidifier and air purifier with HEPA filter
Controlled via fiddly panel on top
The Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier is primarily a dehumidifier, but comes with a HEPA filter that you can add to turn it into an air purifier. It’s available in two size options; the 12L version I tested is designed for smaller homes of up to three bedrooms, while the 20L version is recommended for larger homes with up to five bedrooms. Design-wise, both models are similar; but the 20L version has slightly different specs and a couple of bonus functions compared to the 12L.
At the top of the machine you’ll find the control panel, air outlet with vents that can be manually opened and closed, plus a sturdy plastic handle for moving the dehumidifier around your home. The vents are designed so you can direct the airflow – for example, towards your drying laundry.
The water tank is located on the back of the 12L machine, and the front of the 20L version. This can be pulled in and out. It contains a float that means it will automatically cut off when it’s full, and it has a lid to help prevent spillages – this is useful because getting it in and out is a little fiddly (that has been true of all dehumidifiers I’ve tried).
It’s possible to empty the tank without taking off the lid, via a hole in the corner; but it’s also removable, to enable you to clean the inside of the tank as needed. There’s an outlet, too, if you want to add a water pipe (not provided) for continuous drainage. I did not test this out.
Above the water tank is the air inlet grille, behind which you can slot in your filter if you want the machine to perform as an air purifier. I was a little surprised to learn in the instruction manual that adding the filter will make the dehumidification less efficient – on the 12L version, adding a filter results in 11% less dehumidification and 7% more energy use; on the 20L version, it’s 9% less dehumidification and 5% more energy.
The larger 20L version also features a cable tidy, so you can wrap the 2m power cord out of the way. There’s no space for this on the 12L version I tested.
In terms of looks, the Meaco unit isn’t the most stylish I’ve tested. The white plastic build with green detailing is perfectly functional, and I’d be happy to have it sit in my utility room (if I had one, that is); but perhaps it isn’t for permanent display in my living room.
Controls
On the top side of the appliance you’ll find the control panel. On the 12L version, this compromises an on/off button, up and down arrow buttons, and a timer button. There’s also a basic digital display, and four indicator lights. The 20L version features all of the above, plus a couple more buttons to operate additional modes.
The arrows are used to set the relative humidity level, between 30% and 80% in increments of 5, shown on the digital display. In the instruction manual, Meaco recommends a good humidity level for a home is 50% or 55%. The dehumidifier will automatically go to sleep when the target humidity level is reached. After 30 minutes, it will wake up and begin the dehumidification process again.
When cycling through humidity levels, you’ll also see a couple of different mode options:
CO mode: for continuous dehumidifier, stopping only when tank is full
AP mode: air purification only, no dehumidification
If you want the dehumidifier to run for a set number of hours and then stop, you use the timer button. You can set between one and 24 hours, in one-hour increments.
When the water tank becomes full, the machine will bleep multiple times, the indicator light beneath a wave icon will illuminate, and operation will pause. Once the tank has been emptied and correctly replaced, the dehumidifier will resume operation as per its previous settings.
If the indicator light below the snowflake icon comes on, it means the automatic defrosting system has kicked in. This is to ensure the machine continues to run efficiently even in low temperatures, although it isn’t recommended you use it in temperatures below 5ºC.
If you opt for the 20L version, there’s also a fan speed button (swap between low and high), and a louvre swing button (for an oscillating airflow from the vents). You can also child-lock the dehumidifier by pressing the up and down arrows for three seconds – strangely, this isn’t an option on the 12LE.
When the dehumidifier is on, the digital display will show the current relative humidity level. Pressing the down arrow will show either the target humidity level, AP or CO.
Overall, the controls reminded me a little of trying to set a VCR timer record, or change my car clock – a little too fiddly in this day and age. There’s no button to press to confirm your selection, and because the display is limited to showing just two letters/numbers at a time, I was never quite sure what the machine was doing, and if I’d set it up correctly. At least if you switch the machine on and off using the button on top, it will remember your last-used settings.
While I don’t love to have to download an app with every appliance I test, I wonder if one might have been helpful here. Meaco does have an app – its Arete Two dehumidifier comes with app control.
Design score: 3.5 out of 5
Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier review: performance
Settings all work as promised
Collected an impressive / worrying amount of water
For air purification, not as advanced as a dedicated machine
The beauty of a two-in-one machine such as this is that you can use it for dehumidification in the winter, when the weather is wet and cold, and you don’t want to have all the windows open, and then it can become an air purifier in the summer, when ventilation is easier but allergens are everywhere. I appreciate the fact that it can operate with each function individually – by removing the HEPA filter when you want just dehumidification, or putting it in AP mode for just purification.
Of course, it can do both things all year round if you’d rather, but do bear in mind the dehumidification is less efficient with the HEPA filter installed. I suspect most people won’t realise this, unless they read the handbook thoroughly.
This model comes with a Quiet Mark award, and Meaco says the 12L unit operates at 41dB (from 1m away) while the 20L version is marginally louder at 46dB. Some dehumidifiers come with a quieter “night mode”, but that isn’t an option here.
The design is functional, if not especially beautiful. The range of modes and options offer plenty of control over how it’s used, although in reality, given the fiddly nature of the control panel, I’d probably have preferred something like a single-press “laundry” mode where the machine just runs for four hours at a target humidity of 50%.
Dehumidification
My flat is basement level at the front and ground level at the back, and I do sometimes struggle with damp and condensation inside. I also have the issue of ventilation – it isn’t a massive area, and I need to be able to cook, shower and occasionally dry clothes indoors at a time of year when it’s not always practical to have the windows open.
For that reason, the Meaco dehumidifier has been a bit of a game-changer, in particular for drying clothes. During the winter, clothes take forever to dry, and I’m always concerned about damp getting into the walls. Adding a Meaco dehumidifier made a big difference here – I have been a little shocked by how much water collects, and how quickly, when it’s been left on for this purpose. Plus, if it’s been left running during the day, I haven’t been greeted by a musty smell in my home, even if the windows have been closed.
That’s probably true of most dehumidifiers, but I appreciate in particular the fact that the vents on the Meaco can be angled to direct a breeze towards my clothes horse. The timer function is also useful for this – for example, if I’m going out for the day and just want it to be on for four or five hours.
The USP here is that the Meaco 12LE is designed to operate efficiently in terms of cost. Using a dehumidifier can help lower your heating bills in general, because dry air is easier to heat than damp air, so adding a dehumidifier theoretically means your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard. But it’s no good if you offset those heating savings with higher electricity costs from a machine that uses a ton of power. The 12L model here is meant to cost around 4p per hour to run, while the larger model is around 5p.
Air purification
I also tested this model out as an air purifier on its own, by putting it in AP mode and adding the True HEPA filter. That’s the highest-quality filter used in consumer appliances, and will help remove particles and certain allergens – including mould spores, pollen, dust and **** dander – from the air. (Here’s more on what air purifiers can and can’t help with.)
This machine is primarily a dehumidifier – the air purification here is incidental; there’s air flowing through the machine already, so by adding a filter, you can purify it at the same time as removing the water. So while there are lots of dehumidification settings, the air purifying is either happening or it isn’t.
Today’s most advanced air purifiers can monitor air quality in a space, switch on and off as needed to clear particles, and provide you with plenty of data to browse at your leisure. There’s none of that here. It’s worth noting that the purification itself should be just as good as it is on most other models; it’s just that it isn’t smart enough to be responding intelligently to pollution levels, and it won’t tell you if the air is clear or not. As a result, it’s a little tricky to test out.
Performance score: 4.5 out of 5

How I tested the Meaco Low Energy Dehumidifier
I used the Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier regularly over the course of three weeks in January and February, in my one-bed basement flat. I tried the dedicated dehumidifier mode and combination mode to help with drying clothes and removing moisture from my bedroom (which is prone to condensation on the walls). I also ran tests to see how well it could clear odours from cooking and spraying dry shampoo in air purification-only mode. I tested the various functions, assessed ease of use and build quality, and compared performance to other dehumidifiers I’ve used.

US airlines challenge Biden wheelchair passenger protection rule
US airlines challenge Biden wheelchair passenger protection rule
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Major U.S. airlines and a trade association have challenged a Biden administration rule issued in December requiring new consumer protections for disabled passengers using wheelchairs.
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways and airline trade group Airlines for America challenge the rule in the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals that set stricter standards for accommodating passengers with wheelchairs and requires carriers to reimburse passengers for damage to wheelchairs.
Then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said last year the rule was the biggest expansion of rights for wheelchair users since 2008 and makes it easier for USDOT to hold airlines accountable for damage to wheelchairs or any delay in their return.
Airlines for America said carriers have been making meaningful progress enhancing services for passengers with disabilities since signing a commitment in 2022.
The airline group said it was not challenging all aspects of the regulation but said “certain provisions of the final rule go beyond the USDOT’s statutory authority, violate the Administrative Procedure Act and represent regulatory overreach by the Biden Administration.”
The USDOT rule says airlines must return checked wheelchairs in the same condition or face the presumption they are responsible, but carriers can challenge it.
Under the final rule, airlines must notify passengers whose wheelchairs have been mishandled of their rights, provide loaners and quickly repair or replace broken wheelchairs as well as reimburse passengers for transportation costs incurred as a result of a passenger’s wheelchair being delayed by the airline.
In October, USDOT fined American Airlines a record $50 million for its treatment of disabled passengers, including failing to provide some with adequate assistance and mishandling wheelchairs.
USDOT says an estimated 5.5 million Americans use a wheelchair and data shows that for every 100 wheelchairs or scooters transported on domestic flights at least one is damaged, delayed, or lost.
