In one sweep, an entire department in North America was laid off, despite the rampant and ongoing success of Marvel Rivals. Now, a fresh report published by Game File’s Stephen Totilo has expanded on NetEase’s current situation. The gaming titan has been in a sticky spot of late, and studios it has opened or invested in have started to experience layoffs and closures, such as Liquid Swords, which this week also announced redundancies. Per Totilo’s report, the devastation is yet to unfold in full, and ‘more than a dozen studios’ could be facing closure. ‘Constant Review and Evaluation’ In Game File’s most recent report, it was stressed that NetEase’s cuts aren’t ending with Liquid Swords and the Marvel Rivals team. It was stressed by Stephen Totilo: NetEase is actively shopping around more of its non-******** studios—many of the very same ones it announced over the last three years—two people familiar with the company’s efforts tell Game File. Neither individual was authorized to speak about NetEase’s plans publicly. Those sources have claimed that NetEase wants to divest ‘overseas teams’, an action that could lead to the closure of more than a dozen game studios around the world. The situation would be exacerbated if these studios can’t secure funding once ‘dropped’ by NetEase. As you can imagine, NetEase neglected to comment on these insider reports, but it was mentioned that the company and its studios are ‘in constant review and evaluation, and NetEase will determine changes needed to be made.’ In a one-year window, Embracer Group laid off more than 4,500 employees and brought about the closure of 80 projects, as well as shutting down some prolific studios. This NetEase situation could mirror that to some extent. The ******** company is the fifth largest game firm by revenue, sitting just behind Nintendo and a step ahead of Electronic Arts. It collectively employs around 30,000 people, which represents a concerning amount of ‘fodder’. I’m most concerned about Rebel Wolves, which NetEase invested in back in 2022. Recently, the Polish studio revealed Blood of Dawnwalker, an intriguing title pieced together by former Witcher developers. That could be one of the studios impacted by these changes. Aurora Phelps, 43, has been charged with one count each of kidnapping resulting in death and kidnapping, as well as seven counts of wire fraud, three counts each of mail fraud and identity theft, and six counts of bank fraud, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada. It wasn’t clear if Phelps has an attorney for the case. The federal public defender’s office in Nevada did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Aurora Phelps. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada and the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas office announced the charges from a 21-count superseding indictment at a news conference Friday. Phelps is alleged to have met mainly older men via dating apps before arranging dates, drugging them, and accessing financial holdings online while they were not fully conscious, the federal officials said. They allege Phelps, who has residences in Las Vegas and Guadalajara, did so on both sides of the border. Spencer Evans, the special agent in charge, alleged one victim was drugged, taken across the border in his wheelchair, and ultimately discovered dead in a Mexico City hotel room. He said the Mexico City victim as well as two others died shortly after their meetings with Phelps. A fourth victim was sedated to the point of becoming comatose but survived, he said. “We believe Aurora Phelps deliberately and methodically targeted older men to drug them and steal from them,” Evans said. Evans said she took cars and accessed social security accounts and retirement plans as part of her alleged crimes from 2019 to late 2022. The total value of her scheme, officials said at the news conference, was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and could be more if additional victims are found. Phelps used the money to purchase luxury goods, among other things, Evans alleged. “This is a romance scam on steroids,” he said. Officials said there are 11 total victims, with four composing the basis of the federal indictment. Two of the four are from Nevada, they said. The FBI said in a bulletin that officials believe there may be more victims and encouraged anyone who believes they may have been victimized to come forward. Phelps is alleged to have targeted a wide range of people that also included women and younger men, the bulletin said. The FBI said she has also gone by the names Aurora Flores, Aurora Velasco, and Aurora Alvarez. Phelps also once lived in Arkansas and, though she was born in the United States, she is a dual citizenship with Mexico, officials said. Federal officials said ******** authorities are investigating Phelps in cooperation with the FBI, which was working to extradite her from Mexico. She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, if convicted, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. The Thing’s abilities are game-changer in Marvel Rivals The recent additions to the roster have been great. | Image Credit: NetEase Games The Thing is known in the comics books and movies as the beefy, brawling tank that can take hits and return them with an even ******* impact. And he is doing the same in Marvel Rivals as well. Not only he is a great tank, but he also provides defensive abilities to teammates as well. His abilities offer a mix of damage reduction (to teammates as well), stuns, and a bit of crowd control, which are all crucial in the strategic battles of the game. However, it’s his passive, correctly named: Unyielding Will that steals the show. What this passive provides is immunity to launch-up, knock-back, and other displacement effects. This is a massive advantage, especially when facing off against enemies that specialize in throwing your team around like ragdolls. The best thing about this passive is that it counters some of the most annoying and frustrating mechanics in the game: Peni Parker’s webs. By now, everyone must have encountered an annoying one Peni Parker who can’t let you play the game it was intended. In simple words, she has been a menace. Between slowing and stunning enemies with her webs and her ability to even cancel enemy ultimates, she has made it difficult for many characters to maintain momentum. But now that players can counter her webs with The Thing, she has had less impact on the battle. Beyond his other abilities like damage reduction for teammates and his stunning ultimate, very few heroes can stop him. While he can be stunned, it’s only by a select few abilities, such as Wolverine’s slam. Players have been raving about the new mix he’s brought to the battlefield. But he isn’t just about defense, his gameplay is incredibly satisfying, too. These details gel nicely with what we already know about the ‘Sebile’ controller that was leaked in the FTC vs. Microsoft documents almost two years ago. If nothing else, this new update is a testament to the controller still existing. Per the update posted by eXtas1s, dataminers have uncovered references to the ‘Sebile’ controller in new XCloud files. It was originally thought that the upgraded, next-generation controller would be released alongside whatever console comes next, but these latest details suggest it could arrive sooner. What is Sebile? In September 2023, the FTC vs. Microsoft court case led to many documents being publicly revealed, with some outlining the future of Xbox hardware and peripherals. One such peripheral that was fully unveiled was ‘Sebile’, otherwise dubbed ‘the new Xbox controller’ by Microsoft. Back then, the documents suggested it would have a ‘lift to wake’ feature, precision haptic feedback, better ergonomics, and a rechargeable battery as standard. It was also stressed it would have seamless connectivity mechanics, better accessibility for repair and disassembly, and an accelerometer. In a recent post published on social media by eXtas1s, those very same features are discussed again. In recent XCloud files uncovered by dataminers, references to the following were found: Codenames: Sebile_Delgado, Sebile_EV1B, Actium_Duet, Actium_EVO EXtas1s expands on the codenames by reiterating the proposed technical specification: Modular with improved haptics, similar to the DualSense. Goodbye to batteries, now with a rechargeable battery. Gesture to ‘wake up’ the controller. Part of the console renewal. While the tech specs seem to be nothing more than a look back at what we already know, the modern references to the codenames in the XCloud files are new and are more or less confirmation that Microsoft is still working on Sebile.     ‘I would be extraordinarily happy if it just completely missed us’ ‘I would be extraordinarily happy if it just completely missed us’ The world’s largest iceberg is on a collision course for the island of South Georgia, raising concerns for the British Overseas Territory’s wildlife populations. According to the BBC, iceberg A23a is 173 miles from the island. It broke off Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986 and initially got stuck on the seafloor before breaking off again in December of 2024. What’s happening? The iceberg’s sides are 1,312 feet tall, and its surface area is currently a whopping 1,350 square miles, which is greater than that of the island nation of Samoa (around 1,100 square miles). Warm water is melting it, and large slabs are still breaking off. The BBC reported, “A23a could break into vast segments any day, which may then hang around for years, like floating cities of ice cruising uncontrollably around South Georgia.” Simon Wallace, captain of the South Georgia government vessel Pharos, told the BBC, “Icebergs are inherently dangerous. I would be extraordinarily happy if it just completely missed us.” Why is a floating iceberg concerning? South Georgia is home to a large number of king penguins as well as fur and elephant seals. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? In 2004, iceberg A38 submerged on the continental shelf of South Georgia, which cut off sea pups and penguin chicks from their food. Many of the animals died. Unfortunately, floating icebergs are an increasing problem. In 2023, iceberg A76 gave South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands a scare. The pieces were described in various sizes, from as big as London’s Wembley Stadium to the size of a desk. And fragments from A76 are still floating around. Sailors around the islands have to stay alert. Captain Wallace said, “We have searchlights on all night to try to see ice — it can come from nowhere.” While A23a isn’t causing havoc directly because of rising global temperatures, icebergs breaking off will continue because of warmer air and ocean temperatures, making Antarctica unstable. And when icebergs melt, it changes the chemistry of the surrounding water. Laura Taylor, a Ph.D. researcher, explained to the BBC that these icebergs contain “nutrients and chemicals, as well as tiny animals like phytoplankton frozen inside.” According to the World Wildlife Fund, melting icebergs lower the pH level of water, making it more acidic. This is a concern for food security, food webs, and the ecosystem. What’s being done about melting icebergs? Research is ongoing to find a solution to limit the damage melting icebergs pose. For instance, the Guardian reported that scientists are working on “giant underwater curtains in front of ice sheets to protect them from being eroded by warm sea water.” But perhaps the best way to combat the impacts of melting icebergs is to fight against the overheating of our planet in the first place.
