Broncos install familiar face in key off-field role
Broncos install familiar face in key off-field role
Brisbane have made a major appointment for the 2025 season with Troy Thomson confirmed as the club’s new NRL general manager of football operations.
Thomson, who last October was appointed as football operations manager, was given the promotion tick for the key role at the Broncos’ board meeting on Tuesday.
Last year the Broncos went to market for an overarching general manager of football after Thomson had joined the club.
The Broncos used a recruitment agency to search far and wide for the right fit but came back to a candidate who was already in the building.
They were initially seeking an omnipresent figure who could give new coach Michael Maguire elite support, in much the same way as Frank Ponissi does for Melbourne mentor Craig Bellamy.
The size of the Brisbane operation has led to roles being shared.
Founding NRLW head coach Paul Dyer will lead the NRLW program, Thomson will helm the NRL operation, while Simon Scanlan has oversight of recruitment and retention.
Such has been Thomson’s positive influence and smarts since his arrival that it was decided to elevate him to the new high tensile task.
Thomson knows how clubland works, but also how the NRL operates.
He was most recently employed by the NRL as the elite performance manager for the Kangaroos and has a long association with Maguire.
He linked with South Sydney in 2012, when he was the high performance manager and an integral mover and shaker behind the club’s 2014 title win.
He was responsible for overseeing training, medical staff and practices of the club.
Prior to that he was head trainer at the Storm during a dream run for the NRL powerhouse, while he was also high performance manager of the Melbourne Rebels in their inaugural Super Rugby season.
Last October, club chief executive Dave Donaghy highlighted the importance of finding the right person for the role of football general manager.
Donaghy spoke of the investment the club was making to drive cultural and performance improvements after finishing 12th last year, standards Thomson will now enhance in partnership with Maguire.
He also gave a telling insight at the time about why a single person could not oversee all the Broncos’ on-field operations.
“You’re talking about NRL, NRLW and we’ve got two academy programs and three affiliate clubs,” Donaghy said.
“We want to have really strong relationships with both NRL game development, the Queensland Rugby League and our game development programs.
“Just given the focus and scrutiny on the NRL program, we felt it was too much to have one person really attached to that when we’ve got such a wide, vast football program.
“That’s not including our salary caps across both teams and football department caps. It’s a big, core part of our business and we make no apologies for wanting to invest in it.”

Injuries to Broncos big guns sour win over Bulldogs
Injuries to Broncos big guns sour win over Bulldogs
Brisbane confirmed their early NRL premiership credentials with a 30-14 trial win over Canterbury that was soured by injuries to Kotoni Staggs, Reece Walsh and Payne Haas.
Fullback Walsh was on the bench with ice on his right knee after halftime, but the early word from the Broncos was that it was not serious.
The Broncos were steely in defence early to repel the Bulldogs, and strong with the ball, with lock Kobe Hetherington, prop Pat Carrigan and hooker Cory Paix standouts.
Star recruit Ben Hunt had a hand in all three first-half tries before coach Michael Maguire rested his big guns after the break in a performance that had them on track to win the NRL Pre-Season Challenge.
Bulldogs fullback Connor Tracey had an unhappy afternoon at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe on Saturday, with two spilled bombs leading to tries.
Half Toby Sexton and second-rower Jacob Preston were strong, but Canterbury were sloppy with and without the ball.
Staggs left the field in the 13th minute with a leg complaint. He has had calf and hamstring issues in the pre-season. The Broncos took no chances and he did not return to the paddock.
Prop forward Haas was off five minutes later with an ankle twinge. There was initial concern from the Broncos bench considering he’d had an ankle clean-out in the pre-season. Haas sat on the bench for the rest of the match, but did not return.
The influence of Hunt was on show early with a deft kick that was bobbled by winger Jesse Arthars over the tryline.
Brisbane opened the scoring with a try to skipper Adam Reynolds, who picked up the scraps after a precision bomb by Hunt was dropped by Tracey.
Hunt was influential in the second try, holding up a pass that was burst on to by Walsh, who showed composure to send Arthars over.
Hunt sent half Jock Madden into space for winger Selwyn Cobbo to finish and give the Broncos a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Another Tracey error gifted Broncos centre Delouise Hoeter a try after the break.
A 60m burst from ******-half by Preston for a cracking try lifted the Bulldogs, who added a second to winger Ratu Rinakama after slick work from five-eighth Matt Burton.
Bulldogs winger Blake Wilson reduced the lead to four, before Brisbane centre Deine Mariner and giant prop Ben Te Kura scored to ice the win.
Canterbury forward Josh Curran was put on report and sin-binned for a high shot on Jack Gosiewski.

Hackers steal $1.5 billion from exchange Bybit, biggest crypto heist
Hackers steal $1.5 billion from exchange Bybit, biggest crypto heist

Bybit, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has been hacked to the tune of $1.5 billion in digital assets, in what’s estimated to be the largest crypto heist in history.
The attack compromised Bybit’s cold wallet, an offline storage system designed for security. The stolen funds, primarily in ether, were quickly transferred across multiple wallets and liquidated through various platforms.
“Please rest assured that all other cold wallets are secure,” Ben Zhou, CEO of Bybit, posted on X. “All withdrawals are NORMAL.”
Blockchain analysis firms, including Elliptic and Arkham Intelligence, traced the stolen crypto as it was moved to various accounts and swiftly offloaded. The hack far surpasses previous thefts in the sector, according to Elliptic. That includes the $611 million stolen from Poly Network in 2021 and the $570 million drained from Binance in 2022.
Analysts at Elliptic later linked the attack to North Korea’s Lazarus Group, a state-sponsored hacking collective notorious for siphoning billions of dollars from the cryptocurrency industry. The group is known for exploiting security vulnerabilities to finance North Korea’s regime, often using sophisticated laundering methods to obscure the flow of funds.
“We’ve labelled the thief’s addresses in our software, to help to prevent these funds from being cashed-out through any other exchanges,” said Tom Robinson, chief scientist at Elliptic, in an email.
The breach immediately triggered a rush of withdrawals from Bybit as users feared potential insolvency. Zhou said outflows had stabilized. To reassure customers, he announced that Bybit had secured a bridge loan from undisclosed partners to cover any unrecoverable losses and maintain operations.
The Lazarus Group’s history of targeting crypto platforms dates back to 2017, when the group infiltrated four South Korean exchanges and stole $200 million worth of bitcoin. As law enforcement agencies and crypto tracking firms work to trace the stolen assets, industry experts warn that large-scale thefts remain a fundamental risk.
“The more difficult we make it to benefit from crimes such as this, the less frequently they will take place,” Elliptic’s Robinson wrote in a post.

Wanderers cruise past Mariners, into ALM top six
Wanderers cruise past Mariners, into ALM top six
Western Sydney have cruised to a 4-0 win over struggling reigning champions Central Coast to charge into the A-League Men top six.
The Wanderers extended their unbeaten run to four games, scoring twice in the opening 13 minutes, then taking a 3-0 lead by halftime.
Alen Stajcic’s charges added a fourth via a Marcus Antonsson penalty in the 72nd minute to rise to third, at least temporarily, on the table.
The 10th-placed Mariners (21 points) are winless in five ALM games, five points behind sixth-placed Western United and seven points back from the Wanderers, with their finals hopes in danger.
The Wanderers took the lead in almost comical fashion in the sixth minute.
Anthony Pantazopoulos launched a goal-kick deep into the Mariners’ half and Central Coast keeper Adam Pavlesic tried to head the ball to safety.
But he miscued it and instead sent the ball back over his own head, with Wanderers striker Zac Sapsford running on to it to tap home.
Seven minutes later, the Wanderers stylishly doubled their lead.
Jack Clisby won the ball and worked it to Sapsford, who back-heeled it to Clisby to fire home.
Mariner Lucas Mauragus hit the woodwork in the 23rd minute, and a minute later Alou Kuol had a shot cleared off the line.
Wanderers arguably could have had a penalty on the half-hour mark when Brian Kaltak clipped Bozhidar Kraev, but their pleas were waved away.
Kuol headed home in the 39th minute but was ruled to have fouled Lawrence Thomas.
The Wanderers took the ball up the other end a minute later and scored, with Dean Pelekanos’ shot deflecting home off teammate Nicolas Milanovic.
Western Sydney sealed victory when Pavlesic caught Antonsson in the area.
He saved Antonsson’s penalty but was ruled to have come off his line.
The Swede made no mistake with his second spot-kick.
Next up, Mark Jackson’s Mariners host Western United on Friday, then the Wanderers face Perth Glory at home next Sunday.

Postal Service braces for potential takeover by Trump’s Commerce Department
Postal Service braces for potential takeover by Trump’s Commerce Department
WASHINGTON — The Board of Governors of the U.S. Postal Service is bracing for an attempted takeover by the Trump administration and has retained outside counsel to fight any executive order to that effect, according to two sources with knowledge of the board’s plans.
The board’s nine members, who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, held an emergency meeting after the Senate confirmed Howard Lutnick for commerce secretary on Wednesday, the sources said. In December, Lutnick first discussed his plans with President Donald Trump to dissolve USPS leadership and fold the agency into the Department of Commerce, according to one of the sources.
No executive orders targeting the Postal Service are in the works, according to two White House officials, though they acknowledged there have been talks about ways to make it more efficient along with the rest of the federal government.
The Washington Post first reported a potential takeover of USPS.
U.S. President Donald Trump speaks, as he signs an executive order in the Oval Office, at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S. Feb. 14, 2025.
Nathan Howard | Reuters
In the Oval Office, during Lutnick’s swearing in ceremony Friday, Trump revealed that his new commerce secretary “will be looking” at USPS.
“He’s going to look at it, he’s got a great business instinct, which is what we need, and he’ll be looking at it. And we think we can turn it around, but it’s — it’s the Postal Service,” Trump said in response to questions from reporters. “We’re losing so much money with the Postal Service, and we don’t want to lose that kind of money. So the Secretary and some others that have talent, that kind of talent, we’ll be looking at it.”
USPS reported a net profit of $144 million for the first quarter of this fiscal year, the first time the agency posted a profit since 2006, according to the Pew Research Center.
The postal board believes any executive order would be unconstitutional, given that the Postal Service is authorized by the Constitution and was created by an act of Congress. It’s also unlikely that Trump would be able to privatize the agency without congressional approval.
Mark Dimondstein, the president of the American Postal Workers Union, said in a statement any takeover attempt would be an “attack on the postal service.”
“The takeover would reduce service, especially to rural America, raise rates, close post offices and profit from what is property owned by the American people,” said Dimondstein. “We ask all our customers to join us in the fight to maintain our vibrant, independent, and public United States Postal Service and to oppose these ******** acts.”
During his first administration, Trump eyed doing away with what’s known as the universal service obligation, a federal requirement that directs the Postal Service to provide mail services to all U.S. residents daily, regardless of where they live. If the Trump administration seeks to do away with USPS, it could impact millions of people rely on the Postal Service for critical mail, including medications, particularly in rural areas.
The discussions on USPS come as the recently established Department of Government Efficiency, led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, has slashed dozens of federal programs and cut thousands of government jobs during the first month of Trump’s second term. The cuts are part of an effort by Trump and Musk to overhaul the federal government.
Any efforts to dismantle the Postal Service would not be an anomaly under the Trump administration, which has sought to fold aspects of USAID and the Department of Education into other agencies. At the same time, many of Trump’s moves to implement swift changes have encountered legal roadblocks in the courts.
Republican Louis DeJoy, head of the USPS for the last five years, announced plans to step down as postmaster general this week. During the transition, DeJoy met with members of the incoming Trump administration and it didn’t go well, according to one source with knowledge of the meeting, who said DeJoy and Lutnick have also had a contentious relationship.
After 2020, when millions of Americans, mostly Democrats, voted by mail during the coronavirus pandemic, DeJoy’s relationship with Trump never thawed, according to a source familiar with the president’s thinking on the USPS and mail-in voting. Trump criticized the practice in 2020 and blamed his loss to Joe Biden on it.
“Trump doesn’t view the USPS as a service,” the source said, even though the word is in its name. “He still has issues with mail-in voting.”

Mangione receives large donation after Trump death penalty order
Mangione receives large donation after Trump death penalty order
An anonymous donor has given $11,000 to Luigi Mangione‘s defense fund, citing President Trump’s executive order on the death penalty as their reason for giving.
The donor said the death penalty should not be politicized but said they are concerned, given Trump’s executive order, that it will continue to be.
“I am also concerned about the severe infringement on the defendant’s right to a fair trial and due process, since his juries are effectively pre-tainted,” they added.
As of Thursday evening, the legal defense fund for Mangione has raised more than $500,000.
Mangione released a statement to the public on a website managed by his attorney, thanking people who have written him letters for their support.
The suspect has been accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as he was on his way to a conference in Manhattan on Dec. 4.
He was arrested in Pennsylvania after a five-day search and extradited to New York City.
Mangione faces federal charges on two counts of stalking, one count of ******* through use of a firearm and a firearms offense. He also faces state charges in Pennsylvania and New York.
His next court appearance is Friday at a New York state court.
He is also expected to appear in Pennsylvania state court on Feb. 24, and in federal court on March 19.

Avowed Could Have Been ‘Multiplayer Skyrim’ Before a Reboot Happened
Avowed Could Have Been ‘Multiplayer Skyrim’ Before a Reboot Happened
Avowed hit the market just a few days ago, and players worldwide have been getting to grips with Obsidian’s latest ambitious RPG. This semi-open-world title boasts sumptuous visuals and an innovative story, plus all the trappings of a fantasy RPG that we’ve come to expect over the years.
The single-player marvel could have been something entirely different, though. In a recent report published by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it was revealed by Carrie Patel, the game’s director, that Avowed started life as an MMO that was dubbed ‘multiplayer Skyrim’.
What Might Have Been
Given that the industry’s MMO category is well and truly oversaturated these days, I’m rather thankful that Avowed took on a fresh form following a dramatic reboot.
In a recent report published by Bloomberg, Obsidian’s Carrie Patel explained that a 2021 pivot led to a total reboot of Avowed, which had until then been designed as a multiplayer title. The game was preparing to enter production in earnest, but Microsoft’s acquisition of Obsidian took a drastic turn, and a relatively large team was ordered to shake things up.
Patel expanded:
Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team.
We did not have a very small team at that point.
A lot of lessons we learned as we were building this game, ideally we would’ve learned on a small scale with a true preproduction.
In a further twist, Avowed’s open-world model was switched out for a ‘zone-based’ structure akin to 2019’s The Outer Worlds. This has since been reviewed by Avowed’s development team, which has been pretty public on the reasons for that creative and logistical decision.
Patel wrapped the interview with Schreier by signing off with a nod to the future of the Avowed label:
Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it.
Are you happy that Avowed is a single-player RPG, or would you have preferred an MMO? Let us know in the comments or on the Insider Gaming forum.

I’m in a financial bind and my nephew should cosign my car loan
I’m in a financial bind and my nephew should cosign my car loan
DEAR ABBY: Eight years ago, my wife’s nephew needed a car. His parents had poor credit at that time. I took him to a car dealer, where he found a car, and I didn’t hesitate to cosign the loan. He paid the loan off on time.
I am now in financial difficulty, and one possibility for me would be to refinance my car loan. When I suggested the nephew could cosign for me, there was an instant and emphatic “NO!” from his parents.
Abby, this nephew is an adult and can make his own financial decisions. I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart. Was I wrong to suggest that idea? — REFUSED IN PENNSYLVANIA
Dear Abby advises a man who is in a financial crisis and believes his nephew should cosign for his car loan after he did it for him years prior. Nattakorn – stock.adobe.com
DEAR REFUSED: Considering that you had cosigned on a car loan to help this nephew, I can understand why you thought he would return the favor. That your wife’s family stepped in and nixed it is peculiar. Since your nephew is now an adult, he should have been the one who told you he wasn’t comfortable cosigning with you. I don’t blame you for feeling hurt.
DEAR ABBY: I’ve been married a long time. My in-laws have been a problem during my entire marriage. I’ve had serious health issues and a lot of surgeries over the past 10 years. My ******* came back, and I had to have colon surgery just to name one.
Most recently, I had hand surgery. When my in-laws found out, they couldn’t stop laughing at me. When one of them saw me again, she laughed and asked, “Any more planned?” I didn’t answer; I just walked away. I want to cut them out of my life. My husband is not supportive. Am I wrong? — RECOVERING IN INDIANA
DEAR RECOVERING: Your in-laws have a sarcastic sense of humor and no empathy. I can’t blame you for wanting to protect yourself, especially since your husband is unwilling to protect you from his family’s hurtful reaction. Avoiding people who hurt you is healthy, and you would not be wrong to do it. If you want to take a step back, do so.
DEAR ABBY: I was recently let go from my job at a Christian school. It was heartbreaking, and I’m still crying because of it. The problem is, we attend the church the Christian school is associated with. I’m struggling with going back to church. I don’t think I can bring myself to walk through those doors again. I know if I see the school administrators at church, I will cry. I’m not sure how to stop the sadness. How can I move past this? — CAN’T MOVE ON IN IDAHO
DEAR CAN’T MOVE: Were you told why you were being terminated from your job? I’m sorry you didn’t share it. Your reason for not wanting to return to that church is understandable. You don’t have to see those administrators again. Contact the school online or by phone and ask for a letter of recommendation to help you find a job elsewhere. Then move past this by joining another congregation.
