It’s been snowing nearly non-stop in Gaylord since November. Here’s how much has fallen It’s been snowing nearly non-stop in Gaylord since November. Here’s how much has fallen There’s no doubt it’s been a snowy winter for many places in Michigan, but the Gaylord National Weather Service office is making an argument for the snowiest place in the state. Since Nov. 20, the NWS office reported on X Thursday morning, the area has seen observable snow 86 of 93 days. “Our first measurable snow of the winter was on Nov. 20th, and kicked off quite the run of snow here!,” the NWS said. “The season total stands at 180.9″ as of 7am (Thursday)!” Gaylord sits in the heart of the northern Michigan lake effect snow band. Snowfall data for Thursday through Saturday shows the area received 1.4 inches on Thursday, and a trace of Friday and Saturday, increasing the streak to 88 of 95 days and 182.4 inches of snow. How much snow is the Gaylord weather service reporting? The weather service said that from Nov. 20-30, there was observable snow on 10 of 11 days. The Gaylord area received 36.4 inches of snow for the month. The total is well above the “normal” total of 16.5 inches for the month. For December, from the 1st to 31st, there was observable snow on 26 of 31 days totaling 57.9 inches. The normal total is 38.5 inches. January saw snow on 30 of 31 days totaling 46.7 inches. The NWS said 36.9 inches is normal. February saw observable snowfall, through the 20th, on every day totaling 39.9 inches. As of Saturday, the total stood at 40.6 inches — well above the normal total of 20.6 inches. The NWS reported that snow on the ground was 22 inches deep as of Feb. 22. The depth had reached as high as 29 inches this month. Intel and Samsung Display cooperate to advance next-gen AI PCs into ‘unchartered territory’ Intel and Samsung Display cooperate to advance next-gen AI PCs into ‘unchartered territory’ Intel and Samsung Display have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop displays tailored for AI devices, such as AI PCs, reports ZDNet Korea. With this collaboration, Intel might enhance its mobile platforms with better displays tailored for capabilities of its GPUs. Samsung, on the other hand, might secure additional presence on the market of premium laptops. Through this collaboration, Samsung Display aims to refine screens that work seamlessly with Intel’s processors with AI capabilities, such as Core 200-series ‘Lunar Lake’ and the upcoming Core 300-series ‘Panther Lake’ and Core 400-series ‘Nova Lake’ CPUs that will hit the market in 2025 and 2026, respectively. The goal is to ‘enhance computing experience,’ though this is a rather vague description of the mutual work. In fact, Intel and Samsung Display have been working with each other for years already. For example, Samsung’s latest Galaxy Book 5 laptop uses Intel’s Core 200-series processors as well as the company’s own OLED displays. “With the partnership with Intel, which keeps advancing the future of personal computing, we will be able to accelerate innovating next-generation display technologies,” said Lee Ho-jung, Samsung Display’s vice president for small and medium-sized product planning, in a statement published by Korea Times. “The partnership will usher in an unchartered territory of laptop computer user experiences and allow the two companies to lead the global AI PC market.” Intel is by any means not new to collaborating with developers of displays. Back in the day, it worked together with Innolux and Sharp to develop low-power display technology to enhance the battery life of Intel-based notebooks. Before that, the company worked with LG to enable its WiDi wireless display technology on LG’s TVs and displays. Intel and Samsung now believe that their collaborative work will push innovation forward and improve user experience with AI-integrated devices, though again, this is a very unclear description of what is to come. Samsung Display competes fiercely against companies like BOE and LG Electronics over the premium laptop market. The collaboration with Intel will secure Samsung Display a place inside next-generation Intel Core-based laptops. Perhaps, the joint marketing campaigns will further draw attention to technologies developed by both companies and will certainly help with additional brand recognition. Sudan RSF, allies sign to form alternative government Sudan RSF, allies sign to form alternative government Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and allies have signed a charter that paved the way for the establishment of a parallel government, as Sudan’s army made advances recently against the rival groups. The signing ceremony was held behind closed doors in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi on Sunday, after a highly publicised meeting last week in a building owned by the Kenyan government was condemned by the Foreign Ministry in Khartoum. The signatories said they would establish a government of “peace and unity” despite concerns from human rights groups and the international community, which have accused RSF of committing atrocities and genocide since it started battling Sudan’s army in April 2023. The war in Sudan has killed more than 24,000 people and driven over 14 million people — about 30 per cent of the population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. An estimated 3.2 million Sudanese have escaped to neighbouring countries. The UN last week said that throughout 2024, its human rights office documented more than 4200 civilian killings, adding that the total number is likely much higher. Sudan’s military has gained the upper hand in the conflict as the RSF suffered multiple blows, including losing control of the city of Wad Medani, the capital of Gezira province, and other areas in the province. The Sudanese military also regained control of the country’s largest oil refinery. The RSF appears to have lost control of the Greater Khartoum area and the cities of Omdurman and Khartoum Bahri. Murphy defends Sinn Féin’s White House boycott Murphy defends Sinn Féin’s White House boycott Sinn Féin Senator Conor Murphy has said his party’s boycott of St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the US “wasn’t a decision that was taken lightly”, but was “necessary”. On Friday, the party announced it will not travel to Washington DC for the annual festivities next month over US President Donald Trump’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict. First Minister Michelle O’Neill said she is “taking a stand against injustice” and can not attend events “in good conscience” following the US president’s remarks on Gaza earlier this month. However, no invites have been officially issued yet. The US president previously suggested the US could “take over” and “own” Gaza while resettling its population in the process. ‘Necessary to take a stand’ “The core purpose [of visiting Washington DC] is a celebration of our national day in the United States and I don’t think it’s possible for us to [do that],” Murphy told the BBC’s Sunday Politics programme. Former Economy Minister Murphy was elected to the Seanad (Irish parliament’s upper chamber) earlier this month, resigning from his ministerial role and ending a long career at Stormont. DUP assembly member Diane Dodds described Sinn Féin’s position as “rank hypocrisy”. Also speaking on Sunday Politics, she said that the party attended the White House last year “when bombs were falling in Gaza, to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a more nationalist president”. Dodds described the US as Northern Ireland’s “most important foreign direct investment partner”. She accused Sinn Féin of “positioning themselves with left-wing politics in the Republic ahead of the presidential election”. Earlier, DUP leader Gavin Robinson criticised the decision as “short-sighted and counterproductive”, and confirmed his party would attend the St Patrick’s Day events. When power-sharing is functioning, it is custom for the first and deputy first ministers to make the trip. O’Neill said she had informed Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly of her decision this morning, and will not “stand in her way” if she wishes to go. ‘Cannot be business as usual’ There had been growing calls for Sinn Féin to make its position clear, after the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) clarified it will not take part in celebrations if invited. On Friday, SDLP leader Claire Hanna said she was glad there was a “realisation things cannot be business as usual” with the current US administration. On social media, former SDLP leader and MP Colum Eastwood questioned why the party did not boycott last year’s event. “We used last year to push for a permanent ceasefire,” Conor Murphy told the BBC. “The American administration at that time was in the space of advocating for a viable two-state solution… that has changed. “Colum Eastwood, I think, needs to look at his own position, on the one hand he boycotts the White House, on the other he sits on the government benches in London.” Micheál Martin accused Sinn Féin of “engaging in politics” [PA Media] Eight Irish ministers are travelling to the US next month including Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Micheál Martin. On Friday, O’Neill said it was “the right thing” for Martin to still attend the US celebrations, noting the “unique” opportunity for “one-on-one time” with the US President. She said that the taoiseach should “never miss” the chance to express the “depth of feeling” of the Irish people. Following Friday’s announcement, the taoiseach said Sinn Féin were “engaging in politics” and said he has a “responsibility to the country” to attend the celebrations. Earlier, Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald said she had followed the president’s comments on Gaza with “growing concern”. She said her decision not to attend events this year is a “principled stance” against “the call for a mass expulsion of the ************ people from Gaza”. At a press conference, McDonald acknowledged the US as a “valued friend” of Ireland, citing strong peace ties and its role in the Irish economy. However, she criticised the current US administration as “catastrophically wrong” on Palestine, and called for a permanent ceasefire and a negotiated two-state solution “which guarantees peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis”. Why do politicians travel to Washington? In 2019, then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar presented US President Donald Trump with a bowl of shamrocks at the White House [Getty Images] Traditionally politicians from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland take part in engagements in the US around St Patrick’s Day. This usually culminates in the taoiseach (Irish prime minister) presenting a bowl of shamrock to the US president in the Oval Office. The plant first made its way into the White House in 1952 with the Irish Ambassador to the US John Hearne delivering a box for President Harry Truman. The tradition has continued in one form or another ever since, giving the Republic of Ireland enviable access to the US president every March. Last year, O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly made the first joint St Patrick’s Day visit by Executive Office ministers since 2016. U.S. stocks tumbled on Friday to suffer their worst week of 2025 as a negative mix of news related to tariffs, inflation and the economy worried traders. For the week, the fell about 1.7%, while the and tech-heavy both lost 2.5%. Source: Investing.com The week ahead is expected to be another busy one as investors continue to assess the outlook for the economy, inflation, interest rates and corporate earnings. Most important on the economic calendar will be Friday’s core PCE price index, which is the Fed’s favorite inflation gauge. That will be accompanied by a heavy slate of Fed speakers, including district governors Tom Barkin, Raphael Bostic, Patrick Harker, and Michelle Bowman all set to make public appearances. Source: Investing.com Elsewhere, in corporate earnings, Nvidia (NASDAQ:)’s results will be the key update of the week as the Q4 reporting season quiets down. Other notable names lined up to report earnings include Salesforce (NYSE:), Snowflake (NYSE:), C3.AI (NYSE:), Tempus AI (NASDAQ:), Dell Technologies (NYSE:), Home Depot (NYSE:), Lowe’s Companies (NYSE:), TJX Companies (NYSE:), Macy’s (NYSE:), and Hims Hers Health (NYSE:). Regardless of which direction the market goes, below I highlight one stock likely to be in demand and another which could see fresh downside. Remember though, my timeframe is just for the week ahead, Monday, February 24 – Friday, February 28. Stock to Buy: Nvidia Nvidia stands out as a compelling buy this week, as the undisputed leader in artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors is poised to deliver another blockbuster earnings report after Wednesday’s market close at 4:20PM ET. A call with CEO Jensen Huang is set for 5:00PM ET. Market participants expect a sizable swing in NVDA shares following the print, as per the options market, with a possible implied move of 9.2% in either direction. Analyst sentiment is overwhelmingly bullish, as evidenced by 33 upward earnings revisions in the past 90 days, according to InvestingPro. Source: InvestingPro Wall Street sees Nvidia earning $0.85 per share, rising 67% from EPS of $0.51 in the year-ago *******. Meanwhile, revenue is forecast to surge 72% annually to $38.1 billion, underscoring the company’s unmatched dominance in the AI chip market. A key focus will be the demand for Nvidia’s Blackwell processors, particularly among hyperscale cloud computing providers, which continues to drive growth in its AI segment. Despite concerns that major customers might develop their own AI chips and the emergence of China’s low-cost DeepSeek AI computing system, the recent announcement from DeepSeek regarding its latest AI product has actually spurred demand for Nvidia’s H20 GPUs in China. Looking ahead, Nvidia is expected to guide conservatively yet moderately above consensus, reinforcing confidence in its long-term growth trajectory. Source: Investing.com NVDA stock ended Friday’s session at $134.43, about 12% below its record high of $153.13 reached on January 7. At current levels, Nvidia has a market cap of $3.31 trillion, making it the second most valuable company trading on the U.S. stock exchange after Apple (NASDAQ:). Shares are up 0.1% in 2025. InvestingPro’s AI-powered quantitative model rates Nvidia with a ‘GREAT’ Financial Health Score of 3.62, reflecting its robust operational performance and market leadership. Stock to Sell: Lowe’s In contrast, Lowe’s is set for a challenging week ahead as the home improvement retailer prepares to release its Q4 update before the market opens on Tuesday at 6:00 AM ET. According to the options market, traders are pricing in a swing of 5.4% in either direction for LOW stock following the print. Market expectations are muted, with Wall Street forecasting earnings of $1.84 per share—a modest 4% increase from $1.77 per share in the prior year—amid higher cost pressures and declining operating margins. Revenue is expected to decline by 1.7% annually to approximately $18.3 billion, reflecting soft consumer demand and operational challenges. Given these headwinds, it is anticipated that Lowe’s executives will deliver a cautious outlook for the current quarter, likely dampening investor sentiment further. Source: Investing.com LOW stock closed at $239.17 on Friday, the lowest level since August 20, 2024. At its current valuation, the Mooresville, North Carolina-based company has a market cap of $135 billion. Shares, which are trading below their key moving averages, are down 3.1% to start the new year. It is worth mentioning that the current InvestingPro Fair Value analysis suggests the stock may be overvalued, with a -20.0% downside from its current price to a calculated fair value of $191.30. Additionally, Lowe’s maintains a below-average InvestingPro Financial Health Score of 2.4 out of 5.0, reflecting concerns about weak revenue performance and slowing growth prospects. Source: InvestingPro The second-largest U.S. home improvement retailer has struggled with weakening consumer demand trends and an uncertain fundamental outlook. Budget-conscious shoppers are spending less on do-it-yourself (DIY) projects as households prioritize essentials over big-ticket projects. Margin pressures and rising supply chain costs compound the pain as aggressive promotions by competitors like Home Depot are squeezing profitability. One ridiculous chart on Nvidia ahead of earnings One ridiculous chart on Nvidia ahead of earnings This is The Takeaway from today’s Morning Brief, which you can sign up to receive in your inbox every morning along with: I have asked around my circles and can’t seem to get a straight answer on why Nvidia’s (NVDA) stock looks so cheaply valued on a price-to-earnings multiple basis. So, I am coming to you for answers — drop them to me on X @BrianSozzi. What am I missing with Nvidia? Let’s discuss! I caution this is not me suggesting a Nvidia buying spree heading into earnings on Feb. 26. Yahoo Finance isn’t a stock trading platform or investment bank. We are in the context game as it pertains to investing. This is just a general callout that the market may have a flaw in how it’s valuing Nvidia. Nvidia is among the most cheaply valued AI stocks at the moment, if you can wrap your head around that one! On a forward price-to-earnings multiple basis, Yahoo Finance data shows Nvidia trading at 31 times. Broadcom (AVGO) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) are valued at 35 times and 41 times, respectively. Arm Holdings (ARM) clocks in at 76 times. Listen: What Bill Gates thinks of Nvidia’s CEO NasdaqGS – Delayed Quote • USD At close: February 21 at 4:00:01 PM EST Zoom out further, and Nvidia’s stock is trading at a discount to several other “Magnificent Seven” members. Tesla’s (TSLA) stock is trading at 121 times forward earnings. Amazon (AMZN) trades at 36 times. There are two reasons for this odd valuation level on Nvidia, the former analyst in me posits. One, the Street is underbaking its forward estimates on Nvidia’s earnings power. Yahoo Finance data shows Nvidia’s first quarter earnings per share (EPS) trend has drifted modestly lower over the past 30 days. The Street has also not pushed up its 2025 EPS estimates on Nvidia for more than 60 days. I find this bizarre. Despite China-based DeepSeek rocking the super-bullish AI thesis earlier this year, Wall Street still sees Nvidia profiting from the global buildout of AI infrastructure. Aggressive 2025 capital expenditures assumptions by hyperscalers such as Amazon (AMZN) and Meta (META) shared during this earnings season underscore the point. “Over the coming decades, the investment [in artificial intelligence] is happening,” Russell Investments chief investment officer Kate El-Hillow told me on Yahoo Finance’s Opening Bid podcast (video above). Then the other possible explanation is with EPS estimates not rising, Nvidia’s stock price is in wait-and-see mode. While the stock has rallied hard off the February DeepSeek lows, it has still underperformed the S&P 500 (^GSPC) this year. Shares are down from early November 2024 highs. Story Continues Given the DeepSeek and China trade war worries, I get it. But I come right back to the impressive structural drivers powering Nvidia’s business. Notes KeyBanc analyst John Vinh, “Nvidia remains uniquely positioned to benefit from AI/ML secular data center growth within the industry. With significant barriers to entry created by its CUDA software stack, we see limited competitive risks and expect Nvidia to continue to dominate one of the fastest-growing workloads in cloud and enterprise.” I suspect seconds after earnings hit on Feb. 26 after the close, this valuation disparity may be more easily explained. The Yahoo Finance team will do just that. We are having a live Nvidia earnings special on Feb. 26 starting at 4 p.m. ET running right through 6 p.m. ET. The next day, I will have a live episode of my Opening Bid podcast at 8:30 a.m. ET with a great roundtable of Nvidia pros. Intel launches new 18A website, highlights milestones and specifications Intel launches new 18A website, highlights milestones and specifications Intel has launched a special website dedicated to its Intel 18A (1.8nm-class) process technology. Launching such a website is uncommon for Intel, especially given that it merely covers the previously-announced milestones, but considering the fact that the company is under severe pressure from investors, market observers, clients, rivals, and even politicians, launching a new website may not be a bad idea after all. Intel’s 18A fabrication technology is the company’s first commercial manufacturing process to rely on gate-all-around RibbonFET transistors as well as a backside power delivery network called PowerVia (something that its closest rival TSMC N2 misses). The new production node will also be the company’s first leading-edge process technology that is compatible with industry-standard electronic design automation (EDA) tools as well as IPs from third-party providers and will be available for Intel Foundry external customers. The company pins a lot of hope on this process as it is meant to show that Intel can deliver a leading-edge manufacturing process. The Intel 18A website indeed points out that the company’s 1.8nm-class fabrication technology is not only an Intel development, but a platform that spans across the industry involving EDA tools and IP developers, contract chip designers and design-on-the-cloud providers. The company also reminds that its 18A manufacturing process has been selected by U.S. military and U.S. government for their applications. Considering the fact that Intel only plans to produce its first 18A product — the Panther Lake processor for client PCs — in the middle of the year and expects first tape-ins of third-party 18A products around mid-2025, this is so much the company can do in terms of showing endorsement of the new technology by third parties. When Intel’s fabrication technologies were years ahead of the industry — which was just about a decade ago — Intel would always release details about its next-generation manufacturing technologies together with actual product launches. Just like today, Intel discussed innovative materials and transistor structures in detail, always a source of delight for a technological geek. Times have changed though, and many believe that Intel will forever remain behind TSMC with no chance to retake pole position. Intel certainly wants to prove naysayers wrong, which is one of the reasons why it launched its website. Another reason is of course to attract more attention to the fabrication process and therefore products that it will power. Substack boosts video capabilities amid potential TikTok ban Substack boosts video capabilities amid potential TikTok ban Rafael Henrique | SOPA Images | AP After posting almost 200 videos, amassing hundreds of thousands of followers and racking up millions of views, Carla Lalli Music is quitting YouTube. Substack is her new focus. Music is a cookbook author and food content creator, and she is shifting her focus to Substack, a subscription platform that lets creators charge users subscriptions for access to their content. Music told CNBC she came to that decision after earning more in one year of using Substack, nearly $200,000 in revenue, than she did by posting videos on YouTube since 2021. Music is the exact kind of content creator that Substack is trying to lure to its platform as TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains in limbo. San Francisco-based Substack launched in 2017 as a tool for newsletter writers to charge readers a monthly fee to read their content. The platform allows creators to connect to their followers directly without having to navigate algorithmic models that control when their content is shown, as is the case on TikTok, Google’s YouTube and other social platforms. Substack has raised about $100 million, most recently at a post-money valuation of more than $650 million, the company told CNBC. This year, Substack has broadened its focus beyond newsletters, and on Thursday, it announced that creators can now post video content directly through the Substack app and monetize these videos. “There’s going to be a world of people who are much more focused on videos,” Substack Co-founder Hamish McKenzie told CNBC. “That is a huge world that Substack is only starting to penetrate.” Substack began this push after the social media landscape was thrown into flux as a result of the effective ban of TikTok in January that caused the popular ********-owned service to go offline for a few hours. TikTok was also removed from Apple and Google’s app stores for nearly a month. The disruption to TikTok in January happened as a result of a law signed by former President Joe Biden to force a ***** of the ********-owned app or have it effectively banned in the U.S. On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending TikTok’s ability to operate in the U.S., but that order expires on April 5. Days after TikTok went offline, Substack launched a $20 million fund to court creators to its platform. “If TikTok gets banned for political reasons, there’s nothing to do with the work you’ve done, but it really affects your life,” McKenzie said. “The only and surefire guard against that is if you don’t place your audience in the hands of some other volatile system who doesn’t care about what happens to your livelihood.” Moving beyond newsletters McKenzie says that they are going after creators on competing social media platforms to start sharing their video content on Substack. “Video-first creators, people who are mobile oriented, there’s a whole lot of new possibility waiting to be unlocked once they meet this model in the right place,” McKenzie said. Already, Substack has more than 4 million paid subscriptions with over 50,000 creators who make money on the platform, the company said. Substack says that 82% of its top 250 revenue-generating creators have already integrated audio or video into their content, reflecting a growing emphasis on multimedia content. Prior to the video announcements, Substack allowed creators to post videos on the app to Notes, which is the platform’s front-facing feed format. But the feature did not allow creators to publish video content behind Substack’s paywalls. The update enables creators to put video content behind a paywall and it provides data on estimated revenue impact. It also allows them to track viewership and new subscribers. Carla Lalli Music is a cookbook writer and food creator. Carla Lalli Music The push by Substack into video is a welcomed development for creators like Music, who was losing money from making videos for YouTube. Music said each video costs her $3,500 to produce despite filming at home. If she published four videos a month on YouTube, she’d earn about $4,000 in revenue. Music was losing about $10,000 a month, she said. “It’s really depressing to operate at a loss,” said Music. Even with brand deals, which is an agreement where brands pay creators to post content that promotes their products, the earnings were barely enough to recoup the costs of posting on YouTube, Music said. More than half of the $290 billion creator economy comes from direct-to-fan value. That includes ticket sales, courses, livestreams and paid memberships, according to a survey conducted by Patreon, a Substack competitor. With her shift to Substack, Music said she’s now focused on writing another book, posting recipes behind the platform’s paywall and sprinkling in occasional videos. “I have a lot more to benefit from focused attention on a smaller group of people than I ever did on throwing stuff and seeing what was going to stick with billions of potential audience members,” Music said. “It’s more sustainable.” WATCH: Our base case for TikTok is that it gets banned in the U.S.: Lead Edge Capital’s Mitchell Green Source link #Substack #boosts #video #capabilities #potential #TikTok #ban Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Are we heading toward a constitutional crisis? Are we heading toward a constitutional crisis? More than a half-century ago, during Watergate, President Richard Nixon had a stand-off with the Justice Department, and the courts. On October 20, 1973, the president demanded that attorney general Elliot Richardson fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox. Richardson refused, and resigned. His deputy, William Ruckelshaus, also refused, and resigned. The tensions brought a certain phrase to the ***** of the American conversation: “Constitutional crisis.” Now, that term is back. CBS News Many Democrats are sounding the alarm about President Trump’s use of executive power. Rep. Sean Casten (D-Ill.) said, “The actions that Musk and his IT goons have taken, they’re ********.” And some fear that Trump, who has shattered norms and who worked relentlessly to overturn the 2020 election, cannot be counted on to follow the courts. Most Republicans are shrugging off talk of a “crisis.” Speaker Mike Johnson said, “I’ve been asked so many times, ‘Aren’t you uncomfortable with this?’ No, I’m not.” In fact, many are cheering as Trump overhauls the Justice Department and FBI; works with Elon Musk to fire thousands of federal employees; and signs piles of executive orders. Making sense of this moment is tricky, but looking to history can be a good place to start. Asked What is a constitutional crisis?, Jeffrey Rosen, who runs the non-partisan National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, replied, “A constitutional crisis is if a president refuses to carry out an authoritative opinion of the Supreme Court. It’s never happened before in American history. Andrew Jackson threatened to ignore the court, but he didn’t. And no president has ever defied the court. So far, President Trump hasn’t, either.” “The Supreme Court has never been defied?” I asked. “You haven’t had an authoritative order that a president’s refused to carry out,” Rosen said. These days, Trump’s attorneys are busy appealing lower-court decisions that have tried to rein him in. Those cases could soon reach the Supreme Court. Gillian Metzger, a constitutional law professor at New York’s Columbia University, who worked at the Justice Department in the Biden administration and clerked for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, thinks Trump is deliberately testing the bounds of executive power. I asked, “Where are the guardrails around President Trump and his use of power?” “There are some guardrails; there’s the courts,” Metzger replied. “So far, the courts are holding. This is early days. I mean, we’ve had a whole lot of legal action.” “It’s hard to keep track of everything.” “It’s very hard to keep track of everything!” Metzger said. “But we’ve had a lot of interventions early on by courts. There’s only so much the courts ultimately can do. If you really have an administration that is intent on violating the law, it’s gonna take not just the courts, it’s gonna take Congress, it’s gonna take the states, it’s gonna take the people standing up and making it clear they’re not gonna stand for that, for our constitutional order to be preserved.” For the time being, the Republican-controlled Congress is doing little, if anything, to contest Trump. Democrats have expressed outrage; most Republicans range from muted, to thrilled. Trump has also unsettled his critics by leaning into the idea that he has immense power, even posting a fake magazine cover where he donned a crown, with the caption, “Long Live the King.” On social media, he has quoted this line from a film about the French emperor Napoleon: “He who saves a nation violates no law.” Two-hundred-and-forty-nine years after America rejected a monarch, President Trump posted on social media an image of himself as king. CBS News I asked Metzger, “What does it say to you when a president puts that out there?” “Truthfully, I really don’t know what to make of some of the stuff on social media from Trump or from Musk or from others,” she replied. “It seems to be aiming for some kind of shock value.” Don McGahn, who was White House counsel in Trump’s first term, says he sees a president who is generating headlines, not a crisis. I asked, “Do you believe he’s testing the bounds of executive power, or not?” “I think you can make that argument,” said McGahn. “He certainly is doing it in a way that is very open, very transparent, very in-your-face. Doesn’t seem to be a lotta secret memos telling people what to do. It seems that he is certainly doing it wide open in a way that lets people see. I think he certainly is pushing the envelope, and I think he’s doing it in a way where I think he has much more solid legal authority to do so than I think a lotta people realize.” “What’s your message to Americans who are feeling whiplash with everything that’s happened?” “Calm down; that’s my message. Calm down,” McGahn said. “It’s a process, it’s a lot of paper, it’s a lot of executive orders, it’s a lot of hype. There’s a process in place. People are gonna go to court. Courts will sort it out. Congress can help sort it out. We’ll see what comes out at the end. But this is how our system works.” This crossroads on presidential power has been years in the making, with conservatives long calling for an empowered executive. “You do have courts now, which have a very heavy Trump stamp on them,” said McGahn, who was a key attorney behind Trump’s nominations to the high court, which last year ruled presidents have broad immunity. I asked, “What is the significance of the presidential Immunity ruling when it comes to President Trump today?” McGahn said, “Well, I think it reflects what really had already been the law. Now, there’s some scholars and law professors and things that disagree with that, but I think really the president gets to be president. And when he makes decisions within his constitutional or statutory authority, that’s it.” But what if the courts tell Trump to hold up – and he doesn’t? “If the President starts ignoring court orders, that gets into some ‘odd situations,'” McGahn said. “Hasn’t done that; he says he’s not gonna do that.” “Do you believe him?” I asked. “I do.” In a statement, the White House said Trump is following the Constitution “to a T.” “The continued successes in the courts in favor of the Trump administration shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has ever read our great Constitution, which clearly lays out the role of the Executive Branch, and which President Trump and his entire administration are following to a T,” White House spokesman Harrison Fields told “CBS Sunday Morning.” “The resistance campaign can try, but they will continue to fail in their pursuit to rewrite the Constitution and deny the people the legal authority of the President to run the Executive Branch.” In the end, for Jeffrey Rosen, history and the Constitution remain the guidebooks for our turbulent times, especially as this president is on the brink of making history of his own. “President Trump is asserting a robust form of presidential power that’s as strong as any president in history,” Rosen said. “It’s called the unitary executive theory, and the basic idea is that Congress can’t constrain the president’s power. Now, the Supreme Court hasn’t weighed in on the extent of this unitary executive theory. But if the court agrees with President Trump – as it could – then he will in fact wage executive power more robust than any president in history.” For more info: Story produced by Jon Carras. BBC bosses to demand answers over Gaza film’s ****** link BBC bosses to demand answers over Gaza film’s ****** link Tim Davie and other BBC executives have demanded a meeting over the airing of a Gaza documentary fronted by a ****** minister’s son. Mr Davie will chair crisis talks with other executives to discuss why the corporation decided to broadcast the controversial documentary, which has been branded ****** propaganda by critics. On Friday, the broadcaster removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone from BBC iPlayer, having already issued an apology over its failure to disclose the links of the child narrators to the ******-run government. Mr Davie and Samir Shah, the BBC chairman, are both said to have demanded an explanation for the fiasco amid mounting accusations of BBC bias. A source close to the board told The Sunday Times: “The BBC is currently doing additional diligence on the documentary and the board will want to see the outcome of that work once complete.” They continued: “The board has a scheduled meeting later this week where this matter is on the agenda.” The documentary, which originally aired on Monday evening and was scheduled to show again two days later, provided an account of the conflict through the eyes of three ordinary ************ children. The corporation subsequently issued an apology on Wednesday night, after it emerged the central figure and narrator, the then 13-year-old Abdullah al-Yazouri, was the son of Ayman al-Yazouri, the deputy minister of agriculture in the ******-run government. The corporation issued an apology on Wednesday night after it emerged Abdullah al-Yazouri’s father is a ****** minister – BBC/Amjad Al Fayoumi It then emerged that another of the three children who are the central protagonists of the film was the daughter of a former captain in the ******-run police force, while the third had been photographed posing with ****** fighters. The BBC said it “had not been informed” of the connection by the documentary’s producers before it was broadcast. Following growing criticism, the corporation added a disclaimer to the film, admitting Abdullah’s family link to ****** but continuing to insist the documentary makers had “full editorial control”. As further revelations emerged about the other children, critics demanded it be pulled entirely from the BBC’s schedules. Dozens of prominent media and broadcasting figures signed an open letter to the BBC’s director-general urging him to withdraw the documentary. On Thursday, Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, said she would hold urgent discussions with the broadcaster over the documentary to emphasise the importance of “getting it right”. The BBC eventually pulled the programme and said it was “conducting further due diligence with the production company”. Parents with 2 toxic habits raise kids who are bad with money: CEO Parents with 2 toxic habits raise kids who are bad with money: CEO Mellody Hobson, 54, grew up in a single-parent, low-income household. Her mother’s money habits made her financially anxious at a young age. “There was just a shortage at all times. We would get evicted, our phone would get disconnected. … There was one time we were living in an abandoned building,” Hobson said on an episode of “The Oprah Podcast” that aired in January. “My mom would buy Easter dresses instead of paying the light bill.” Mismanaging your family’s money, and not appropriately demonstrating the value of money to your kids, are two toxic habits, says Hobson, who is now a co-CEO of the asset management firm Ariel Investments and published the bestselling kids’ book “Priceless Facts About Money” in 2024. Those habits can cause your children become chronically stressed about their finances in adulthood Children can grow up to repeat their parents’ poor choices, she added. “If you pay the minimum payment, your child’s going to do that,” said Hobson. “If you overspend, your child will overspend.” If you pay the minimum payment, your child’s going to do that. If you overspend, your child will overspend. Mellody Hobson co-CEO of Ariel Investments In Hobson’s case, her mother’s excessive spending was confusing and stress-inducing, and made her feel hopeless, she said: “[It] created, quite frankly, a great deal of trauma for me. When you’re a child, you have no control. You can’t go get a job. There’s nothing you can do.” Hobson’s upbringing motivated her to pursue a career in finance, she said. How to teach kids healthy financial habits early on Good habits to teach your children early on include discussing the value of cash and the importance of saving — and putting your money where your mouth is, Hobson said. She once gave her kids $3 in cash and took them shopping at a dollar store, where they had to decide between buying candy — a consumable good — and an item with repeat value, like a toy. The outing gave her kids some impactful perspective when they visited The Lego Store afterward and saw a playset on ***** for $189, she noted. This kind of approach is practical and easy for kids to understand, Alexa von Tobel, a Harvard University-trained investor and managing partner of venture fund Inspired Capital, told CNBC Make It in 2024. It’s important to use a “matter of fact” tone when having money discussions, as that helps your kids understand that cash is “a tool to help you live the life you want to,” she added, rather than something that’s either worshipped or ignored. Using physical cash in front of your children can help, too, said Hobson, since kids may struggle to fully understand the value of a dollar when it only appears as a number on a screen. “For children, it’s on a credit card, a phone, or it spits out of a machine, so trying to explain that you work for it [is] super hard,” Hobson said, adding: “Use cash so they can see that it’s finite … and you don’t have an endless amount of it.” Want to earn some extra money on the side? The 35 Best James Webb Space Telescope Images So Far The 35 Best James Webb Space Telescope Images So Far The James Webb Space Telescope was late to launch, but the observatory is making up for lost time. After several years of operation, Webb has captured some truly stunning cosmic vistas, complete with a raft of scientific data that has helped scientists advance their understanding of the universe. The telescope may operate for 20 years, and it’s off to a good start. Let’s take a look at the best of Webb so far. Here, in no particular order, are the 35 best Webb images we’ve seen to date. 1. Webb Deep Field Webb Deep Field Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Among the very first things NASA did with the operational Webb telescope was recreate one of the most iconic Hubble photos of all time. The Webb Deep Field is the deepest infrared view of the universe ever produced, revealing thousands of galaxies in an area of the sky the size of a grain of rice held at arm’s length. Some of the galaxies in this image are 13.1 billion years old, captured as they appeared when the universe had only just cooled enough to allow star formation. 2. Jupiter Webb Jupiter annotated Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Did you know Jupiter had rings? They’re not as prominent as Saturn’s, but Jupiter’s massive gravity has pulled in enough material to give it a few. Most telescopes can’t resolve the planet’s faint rings, but Webb can. In the summer of 2022, scientists imaged Jupiter with Webb, complete with rings and glowing auroras at both poles. 3. Neptune Webb Neptune annotated Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Speaking of rings, Neptune has them, too, but they’re even harder to spot. The JWST operates in the near-infrared range from 0.6 to 5 microns with its NIRCam, so the planet doesn’t look deep blue as it does in most photos, but the rings are very clear. No space probes have visited Neptune since Voyager-2 in the late 1980s. So, this was the first time in 30 years that anyone had seen a hint of Neptune’s rings 4. Saturn Saturn webb Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Saturn did not escape Webb’s notice. NASA is still working to clean up the observations, but it has released a preliminary view of the ringed planet. This image features Saturn as seen in the NIRCam filter F323N (3.23 microns). NASA processed this monochrome image and color-mapped it to a dark orange hue. Saturn is darker than the rings because the methane in its atmosphere absorbs most of the light that hits it. 5. Uranus Uranus Webb Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI The planet Uranus was the last gas giant to get the Webb treatment. In late 2023, NASA released this NIRCam mage of the ice giant, showing the planet’s faint rings, as well as several of its moons, including Ariel, Miranda, Titania, Umbriel, Belinda, Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Perdita, Portia, Puck, and Rosalind. NASA believes studying Uranus can help us better understand ice giant exoplanets in other solar systems. 6. Exoplanet HIP 65426 b Webb exoplanet HIP 65426 b Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Webb’s planet peeping is not limited to our own solar system. Webb captured its first image of an exoplanet in 2022 when it turned to the star HIP 65426. There, Webb detected the exoplanet HIP 65426 b. Webb did have a few things going for it. The exoplanet is about nine times the size of Jupiter, and its orbit takes it three times as far from its star as Neptune is from the sun. That helped scientists pick out the planet in the star’s haze, but it’s still an impressive feat for Webb. 7. Phantom Galaxy Phantom Galaxy Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Some 32 million light-years away, a galaxy known as M74 or the “Phantom Galaxy” is aligned so we can look down on the full glory of its spiral structure. This swirl of stars may be similar to our own Milky Way galaxy, with a diameter of 100,000 light years and an estimated 100 billion stars. Webb’s Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) allowed scientists to look through the dust and gas to see the ghostly structure of the galaxy. Webb was even able to image the nuclear star cluster at the galaxy’s center. 8. Pillars of Creation Pillars of creation NIRCam Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Naturally, the Webb Telescope team wasted no time revisiting probably the most well-known Hubble subject, the Pillars of Creation. These structures, the largest of which is five light-years tall, are part of the Eagle Nebula, an active star-forming region about 6,000 light-years away. The enormous pillars of gas are studded with luminous points of light from newly formed stars. Webb’s NIRCam instrument can see many more stars than Hubble, as well as an eerie red glow in areas where bright young stars are energizing hydrogen atoms. 9. Pillars of Creation (MIRI) Webb Pillars MIRI Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Webb doesn’t see the universe as we do—it operates outside of the visual spectrum in the infrared, and it can image the same object in different spectra to gather more data. The previous image shows the Pillars in near-infrared, but Webb also took a look in mid-infrared with its MIRI instrument. The darker regions indicate denser and cooler gas. Stars don’t shine as brightly in mid-infrared, so most of the hot, young stars are not visible. However, we do see several blue and white stars shining through. 10. The Crab Nebula The Crab Nebula Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, T. Temim (Princeton University) The Crab Nebula is about as famous as a space cloud can get—it’s been imaged by most telescopes, including Webb. This image shows the supernova remnant 6,500 light-years away in incredible detail. The red-orange sections indicate the presence of ionized sulfur, the blue is ionized iron, the yellow and green areas are dust, and the white parts indicate synchrotron emission from electrons interacting with the cloud’s magnetic field. Near the center of the image, you can even make out the pulsar that was once a full-fledged star before exploding to create the cloud we see today. 11. Stephan’s Quintet Stephan’s Quintet webb Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA This collection of five galaxies, discovered in 1877, was the first known compact galaxy group. Four of these galaxies are in close physical association, and astronomers believe they will one day merge. One of the objects, NGC 7318, is already giving us a preview. This object is actually two galaxies in the midst of merging. The image was captured with Webb’s MIRI instrument, which reveals the contours of dust within the galaxies. 12. Cosmic Penguin Penguin and the Egg Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI NASA celebrated two years of Webb operations by releasing a rather whimsical image, the so-called “Penguin and Egg.” The spiral galaxy that makes up the penguin (NGC 2936) has been gravitationally disrupted, causing it to fly apart in a vaguely penguin shape. The “egg” is another galaxy (NGC 2937) with a compact elliptical shape and a large number of very old stars. The image uses data from Webb’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments. 13. Protostar L1527 Protostar hourglass nebula webb Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA In late 2022, researchers released an image of a young protostar known as L1527. The image, captured with Webb’s NIRCam, shows an hourglass-shaped cloud extending from the star in the middle. The turbulent protostar periodically ejects material as it grows, and the glowing hourglass shape shows the outlines of cavities created by these bursts. The blue areas are where dust is thinner, and the orange indicates thicker layers. You can also see a protoplanetary disk as a dark band right across the middle of the star. 14. Wolf-Rayet Star WR 124 Wolf–Rayet WR 124 Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Wolf–Rayet stars are of great interest to astronomers, who believe they might hold the key to understanding why there’s so much dust in the universe. These stars don’t live long, but they spend their short lives belching out a nebula of dust and gas. The nebula around WR 124 is known as M1–67, and Webb’s infrared eyes (NIRCam and MIRI) revealed never-before-seen details of the clouds. 15. Einstein Ring Organics Einstein Ring Webb Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The Webb telescope can see objects at an incredible distance, but sometimes it needs a little help. Gravitational lensing can magnify distant objects, sometimes distorting the light to produce so-called Einstein Rings. That’s what Webb spotted earlier this year—a galaxy 12 billion light-years away lensed by one just 3 billion light-years away. The more distant galaxy appears as a ring around the closer one due to the lensing effect. The upshot is that Webb was able to analyze the spectra from the background galaxy, finding evidence of organic materials. 16. Extreme Outer Galaxy Extreme Outer Galaxy Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, M. Ressler The Extreme Outer Galaxy is a dense star-forming region that gets its name from its position 58,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. Earth, by comparison, is only 26,000 light-years from the center. Webb imaged a part of the Extreme Outer Galaxy known as the Digel Clouds, seen here with numerous young stars blasting out jets of material. These clouds are almost all hydrogen, with low levels of heavy elements. That makes the clouds similar to the Milky Way billions of years ago. 17. DART Observation Webb DART series Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA In October 2022, Webb turned its attention to a target of opportunity. That’s when NASA conducted the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test), slamming a spacecraft into the smaller or two self-orbiting asteroids. Webb captured the moment of impact, as did the Hubble Telescope. Webb’s images show a tight point of light with ejecta expanding outward. The observations retained more data than Hubble’s. 18. Orion Nebula Carbon Detection Webb Orion Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The Orion Nebula sits 1,300 light-years away, but it’s among the brightest nebulae in the night sky—you can even see it with the naked eye. Webb can see it much better, though. One of the young stars in Orion revealed a protoplanetary disk, and scientists found an interesting surprise in the star’s spectra. It is around this star where Webb detected evidence of methyl cation (CH3+), a vital carbon molecule that combines to form more complex organics. 19. Cartwheel Galaxy Cartwheel Galaxy Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Early in Webb’s life, it took a peek at a commonly observed object known as The Cartwheel Galaxy. In the distant past, this galaxy survived a collision with another, leaving it with its distinctive wheel-like shape. Webb revealed the smoother arrangement of older stars in the core versus the young stars in the galaxy’s expanding ring. 20. GLASS-JWST Ancient Galaxies redshifted galaxies webb Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA We already talked about the Webb Deep Field, but some special things are hiding in that image that deserve attention. Two of the many galaxies visible in that frame caught the eye of researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center. The galaxies (above) were found to have extreme redshifts of 10.5 and 12.5, meaning they appear as they did just 450 million and 350 million years after the Big Bang. That makes them among the most distant and, therefore, oldest galaxies ever seen. 21. Southern Ring Nebula Southern Ring Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The Southern Ring is a planetary nebula, a cloud of dust and gas produced as an aging star swells and ejects mass. These dense nebulae can last for tens of thousands of years as stars reach the end of their lives, and the Southern Ring is an especially striking example with its multi-layered shape. Webb observed this object last year, revealing the source of the nebula for the first time. It’s the dimmer of the two stars in the right image above, which was captured with Webb’s MIRI instrument. The other image came from NIRCam with its shorter wavelength that cannot detect the second star. Hubble was unable to see the star through all that dust, either, but Webb picked it up with no problem. 22. Carina Nebula Carina Nebula Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Among the first Webb images released by NASA was this striking vision of the Carina Nebula. The images show a star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. The empty area above the roiling clouds comes from the intense ultraviolet radiation from a cluster of hot young stars in the middle of the bubble. 23. The Sparkler The Sparkler Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Did you think we were done zooming into the Webb Deep Field? Well, think again. There’s another fascinating object hiding in there, which astronomers have dubbed The Sparkler. Like everything in the image, the Sparkler appears as it did in the distant past. The Sparkler is young and not very large, but it’s studded with globular clusters that have a lot in common with the clusters still present in the Milky Way. Scientists speculate that The Sparkler might look very much like the Milky Way did in its infancy. 24. Chameleon I Nebula Chameleon I Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Webb is often looking at swirling currents of newly formed stars, exploded solar systems, and other toasty places. But it’s also gazed into the depths of the Chamaeleon I nebula, which features the lowest temperatures in the known universe. While Chamaeleon I, about 500 light-years from Earth, is a star-forming region, part of the nebula is isolated from current formation activity. There, temperatures measured by Webb are an incredible -263 degrees Celsius (-441 degrees Fahrenheit). That’s a mere 10 degrees Celsius from absolute zero. 25. Enceladus Plume Webb Enceladus plume Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Saturn’s moon Enceladus is of great interest to planetary scientists thanks to the prominent plumes of water that erupt from its surface. This clear evidence of a sub-surface ocean has made Enceladus a possible target of future robotic exploration. Webb imaged Enceladus recently, and while it can’t see details of the tiny moon itself, it was able to see the 6,000-mile plume of water leaking from its surface. 26. Titan Clouds and Surface Webb Titan Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Enceladus is too small to see clearly, but Webb has no trouble seeing the surface of Saturn’s largest moon. Titan is the only moon known to have a dense atmosphere—a lot of nitrogen with traces of methane and hydrogen. There are also lakes of hydrocarbons on the surface, and Webb was able to spot some of them. The image above shows the moon with a few different filter options. The left image of the clouds used F212N (2.21 microns), and the right version with surface features is a combination of Blue=F140M (1.40 microns), Green=F150W (1.50 microns), Red=F200W (1.99 microns), and Brightness=F210M (2.09 microns). 27. NGC 604 NGC 604 Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA In early 2024, NASA released a stunning NIRCam image of NGC 604, an enormous star-forming region outside our own galaxy. It’s more than 2.7 million light-years away in the galaxy Triangulum. The image looks like something that could be in our own celestial backyard, but it’s only visible in such great detail because of its size. NGC 604 is 1,300 light-years in diameter, 40 times larger than the Orion Nebula. The red and orange regions denote the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which play a key role in star formation. Webb’s sensitive infrared eyes can also see the cavernous spaces inside the nebula where the radiation from young stars pushes clouds away. 28. Fomalhaut Asteroid Belt Fomalhaut asteroid belt Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Webb is so powerful, it’s seeing features of other solar systems for the first time. For example, the telescope recently detected an alien asteroid belt. It’s in the Fomalhaut system about 25 light-years away. That’s close in astronomical terms, and it is a rather beefy asteroid belt. Our main asteroid belt is about 1 AU thick (the distance between Earth and the sun), but Fomalhaut’s is a staggering 80 AU thick. Still, Webb is the first to see it. Other powerful observatories like ALMA and Hubble can only see the outline of the disk. 29. Tarantula Nebula Tarantula Nebula Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Last year, Webb spotted a spider. Well, a nebula that NASA has characterized as a “cosmic tarantula.” The Tarantula Nebula is 161,000 light-years away in a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way known as the Large Magellanic Cloud. It apparently looks like a tarantula’s next lined with silk. The blue stars in the center have carved a bubble with their intense ultraviolet radiation and solar wind, but the wispy “silk” around the edges are dense pillars that can withstand the force from the star cluster. 30. Mirror Selfie Webb mirror selfie Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The James Webb Space Telescope can see all over the universe with its enormous mirror, but it can’t see itself. There are no external cameras, and instead of being in low-Earth orbit, it’s all the way out at L2, where no spacecraft is expected to venture. We may never see the whole telescope again, but we can see one part: the mirror. The team included a pinhole-style lens in the NIRCam that can see an image of the 6.5-meter primary mirror reflected via the secondary mirror. NASA used this to complete the mirror segment alignment during the commissioning process. Regardless, it’s a very neat selfie. 31. Little Red Dot ****** Holes Webb LRD Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA / STScI / Dale Kocevski The Webb telescope has spotted numerous objects known as little red dots (LRDs) in distant parts of the universe. Astronomers have been puzzling over these ancient star clusters since Webb came online, but an analysis culled from multiple surveys suggests LRDs may be a new population of ****** holes. We don’t yet know why these ancient ****** holes grew so rapidly, but their presence explains the high brightness of LRD, which previously had astronomers worried about flaws in our models of galaxy formation. 32. Sombrero Galaxy MIRI Sombrero Galaxy Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The Sombrero Galaxy is one of the most iconic objects in the sky, and Webb allows us to see it in a new light. This image of the Sombrero Galaxy (also known as Messier 104) was captured with Webb’s MIRI instrument. In the mid-infrared, the core glows much less intensely, revealing distinct inner and outer disks. For the first time, astronomers can study the galaxy’s scant globular clusters and waves of carbon-containing molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. 33. NGC 602 (Small Magellanic Cloud) NGC 602 Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The unrivaled power of the Webb telescope allowed astronomers to identify the first brown dwarfs outside our galaxy, and this is where they are—NGC 602 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This satellite galaxy of the Milky Way is small and not very active, but it does have some star-forming regions like NGC 602. It was here that astronomers identified a population of brown dwarfs, a type of sub-stellar object sometimes called a failed star. They lack the mass to sustain a fusion reaction, making them very difficult to spot even in our galaxy. 34. HH 30 Protoplanetary Disc HH 30 Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA The Taurus Molecular Cloud sits some 430 light-years away from Earth, and inside are many young stars like HH 30. HH 30, however, happens to be oriented so that is is seen edge-on from Earth—the star itself is obscured by the protoplanetary disc across the middle of the image. HH 30 is a rare type of Herbig-Haro object in which the outflowing of gas forms a narrow jet. The jet is surrounded by a wider, cone-shaped envelope of dust and gas. Below that, a wide nebular haze is illuminated by light from the star. 35. The Carbon-Rich Dust of Wolf-Rayet 140 WR 140 waves Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA Webb has been keeping an eye on Wolf-Rayet 140 since the earliest days of its mission. Like all Wolf-Rayet stars, this one has high levels of heavy elements, and strong solar wind. WR 140 is actually a pair of stars, which orbit each other closely. The strong stellar winds collide, releasing waves of carbon-rich dust. The objects have released more than 17 “shells” of dust over a 130-year *******. Here, Webb observations from 2022 and 2023 are compared to show how far the dust has traveled in 14 months. AOC Agon Pro AG346UCD Ultra-wide OLED gaming monitor review: Maximum color and solid value AOC Agon Pro AG346UCD Ultra-wide OLED gaming monitor review: Maximum color and solid value With so many of the best OLED gaming monitors appearing regularly from every major and minor manufacturer, my review opportunities have been prolific. And with no significant exception, their imaging and gaming performance differs by mere minutia. As long as the refresh rate is over 150 Hz, you can expect to see no motion blur and experience low input lag. Perfect ****** levels and large color gamuts mean a stunning image that outguns the best LCD can offer. Buying choice comes down to size, shape, and price. In the 34-inch curved ultra-wide 21:9 category, prices hover around $800 for the speediest models running at 240 Hz. But for $650 at this writing, you can have the AOC Agon AG346UCD. It runs at 175 Hz with Adaptive-Sync at WQHD 3440×1440 resolution. It also delivers HDR and a wide color gamut courtesy of Quantum Dot technology. Let’s take a look. AOC Agon Pro AG346UCD Specs Swipe to scroll horizontally Panel Type / Backlight Quantum Dot Organic Light Emitting Diode (QD-OLED) Screen Size / Aspect Ratio 34 inches / 21:9 Row 2 – Cell 0 Curve radius: 1800mm Max Resolution and Refresh Rate 3440×1440 @ 175 Hz Row 4 – Cell 0 FreeSync and G-Sync Compatible Native Color Depth and Gamut 10-bit / DCI-P3+ Row 6 – Cell 0 HDR10 Response Time (GTG) 0.03ms Brightness (mfr) 250 nits Contrast Unmeasurable Speakers 2x 8w Video Inputs 1x DisplayPort 1.4 Row 12 – Cell 0 2x HDMI 2.0 Audio 3.5mm headphone output USB 3.2 1x up, 3x down Power Consumption 39.5w, brightness @ 200 nits Panel Dimensions WxHxD w/base 31.9 x 16.6-21.7 x 11.6 inches (811 x 422-551 x 294mm) Panel Thickness 5.1 inches (130mm) Bezel Width Top: 0.3 inch (8mm) Row 19 – Cell 0 Sides: 0.4 inch (10mm) Row 20 – Cell 0 Bottom: 0.7 inch (18mm) Weight 23.8 pounds (10.8kg) Warranty 4 years I won’t build suspense here. The AG346UCD doesn’t offer the 240 Hz and high brightness of Acer’s Predator X34 OLED. But that monitor is $900, and though it is awesome, it won’t perform 28% better. AOC offers a lot of gaming performance and image goodness at a reasonable price compared to other OLEDs. The panel features Quantum Dot tech which expands the color gamut comfortably past 100% of DCI-P3. AOC claims 99%, but I measured over 112%, a new record in my ever-growing test database of which the AG346UCD is the 414th member. Out-of-box accuracy is good enough to skip the calibration step, but a few tweaks take the numbers to reference-level. As a curved 21:9 panel, the AG346UCD creates an immersive feel, but the 1800R radius is gentle. When looking at spreadsheets, there is no image distortion, so it is fit and ready for the workday. But gaming is the focus; to that end, you get aiming points and a sniper mode. There’s also a nice pair of internal speakers with eight watts of power that provide good sound with surprisingly good bass. If you enjoy a light show, there are colored LEDs in the back called Light FX that accentuate the monitor’s angular styling. Gaming is also supported by a 175 Hz refresh rate, which is lower than the 240 Hz OLEDs I’ve regularly seen. Motion blur is almost non-existent but not entirely eliminated. It’s more visible if you’ve seen as many fast screens as I have. But as you’ll see, there is no impact on input lag; it’s extremely low. The AG346UCD supports FreeSync, G-Sync, and VRR for consoles. Where is the sacrifice, you ask? It’s brightness, specificlly HDR brightness. The AG346UCD peaks around 237 nits, which is lower than most. If you’re familiar with OLEDs, you know that is a typical number for monitors with their variable brightness feature turned off. The AG346UCD does not have that option, so you’ll miss the bright highlights that make HDR content stand out. Are these sacrifices worth getting a 34-inch OLED gaming monitor for $650? Once you see the test results, you’ll agree they are. The AG346UCD is an undeniably good value. Assembly and Accessories The AG346UCD’s package contents must be extracted from crumbly foam before assembly. I noted the base which is a seriously thick chunk of metal. It weighs more than some entire monitors. Only a concerted effort will knock it over. After attaching the upright with a captive bolt, the panel attaches to the fulcrum with two included fasteners. If you’d rather use an arm, there’s a substantial bracket in the box with screws provided. The cable bundle contains HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB. Product 360 Image 1 of 4 (Image credit: AOC) (Image credit: AOC) (Image credit: AOC) (Image credit: AOC) The AG346UCD displays its Agon branding on the front bezel and in the back. The distinct design element is a hexagon with five unequal length sides. This shape surrounds the stand fulcrum and is ringed by ventilation and an LED array. Effects and colors can be controlled in the OSD. The upright is also a hexagon with a flip-out headphone hook and a small cable management clip incorporated. The panel is finished in ****** with gray trim while the stand is all gray. Ergonomics include 3/21 degrees tilt and 16 degrees of swivel. The height range is 130mm (5.1 inches) and moves with a slight click so you can easily lock in your preferred position. The single control is a large joystick that manages power and OSD navigation. You can opt for Windows desktop control using AOC’s G-Menu app. You may have noticed something cool in the side profile photo above. Yes, the AG346UCD has side USB ports. This feature used to be more common, but now is a rarity. It’s great to see because it’s very convenient. Fishing underneath to plug in a mouse and keyboard is a pain, if you even get USB ports. There’s no KVM though. The video input panel includes two HDMI 2.0 and one DisplayPort 1.4 along with the USB upstream and one more downstream port. You also get a 3.5mm headphone jack. The internal speakers play nice and loud with no significant distortion and decent bass. They’re driven by eight-watt op-amps. OSD Features The AG346UCD’s OSD has the same look as all Agon monitors. It has a vertical screen trimmed in sci-fi graphics, with red text on a ****** background. The bottom ribbon is organized like the one on AOC’s rank-and-file monitors. Image 1 of 7 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) There are eight menus in total, starting with Game Setting where you’ll find a selection of game modes that operate separately from the picture modes. The best way to avoid confusion is to leave this off. Shadow Control is provided if you have trouble seeing in dark places. The sniper scope occupies a large window at center screen and features three magnifications. If you want to track the fps count, turn on the Frame Counter. There are aiming points available by down-clicking the joystick. Depending on the background, you can have a fixed red cross or one that changes between ****** and red. In the Luminance menu, you’ll find seven Eco modes or picture modes. Standard is the best choice and conforms closely to industry standards. You can enjoy it without adjustment, but I recommend a few tweaks for the best possible image. You also get three gamma presets and three HDR emulation modes. They alter the luminance curve to simulate HDR for SDR content. When HDR10 signals are present, two additional modes are revealed. 21:9 monitors are well suited for PIP and PBP use where you can view two video sources at once. The options here include window size and position and the ability to specify which one outputs audio. Color options include three fixed color temperatures and a user mode with RGB sliders. You can also choose from Native, DCI-P3, or sRGB gamuts. However, picking one of the latter two will gray out all other image options, so I suggest sticking with Native. The Light FX feature plays a show with the LED ring in back. You can enjoy a variety of effects and tweak colors to many different combinations. OLED care options are extensive with pixel orbiting and refresh plus dimming of static logos and screen borders like the HUDs in many first-person games. A screen saver can also be engaged. AOC Agon Pro AG346UCD Calibration Settings The AG346UCD measures well out of the box in its Standard picture mode with D65 grayscale, 2.2 gamma, and around 112% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Calibration is unnecessary, but reference-level accuracy is achieved with a few changes to the RGB sliders in the color menu and a one-click reduction in the contrast slider. I recommend avoiding the HDR emulation modes as they alter the luminance curve to the point where some highlight and shadow detail is obscured. There are two modes available for HDR signals. Display HDR has the best accuracy, and both it and HDR 1000 Max deliver the same peak brightness. My recommended SDR settings are provided below. Swipe to scroll horizontally Picture Mode Standard Game Mode Off Brightness 200 nits 80 Brightness 120 nits 45 Brightness 100 nits 36 Brightness 80 nits 27 Brightness 50 nits 15 (min. 16 nits) Contrast 49 Gamma 1 Color Temp User Red 49, Green 50, Blue 51 Gaming and Hands-on If you’ve hesitated to pull the trigger on a curved monitor because you work more than play, the AG346UCD is a great choice. It has a relatively slight 1800R curve, which means it is “only a little curved.” There is no image distortion, and when you’re crunching numbers in a spreadsheet or writing your next novel in Word, you won’t even notice the curve. It is every bit as useful and functional as a flat panel. Its size is practical as well. It’s wide but not tremendously so. You’ll need 32 inches of space to accommodate the width and 12 inches to sit the large but slender base. The legs are skinny so there’s plenty of room to let papers pile up. The image is bright enough for the workday and when dialed back to a comfortable 200 nits peak, you can stare at the screen for hours without fatigue. Color is beautifully saturated, and contrast is just as wonderful as any OLED. For SDR content, there is almost no difference in image quality between OLEDs. You will notice the extra punch of those Quantum Dots though. The AG346UCD is the most colorful monitor I’ve yet tested. You’ll see later in my tests that it isn’t as bright as other OLEDs. That is because it lacks a variable brightness option. If you were to turn it off on a screen that has it, you would see roughly the same peak as the AG346UCD offers. The problem happens when you switch to HDR mode. Most graphics-driven games today offer HDR, and an OLED is typically the best way to experience it. The AG346UCD let me down a little here. It doesn’t offer any more brightness, meaning the peak is around 236 nits for SDR and HDR. And I noted some undersaturated color in the most vivid parts of the image. You’ll see what I mean on page five when you check out the HDR tests. However, the contrast I expect from an OLED is there, and the AG346UCD maintains an edge over LCD technologies. When it comes to the more essential parts of gaming feel, response, and motion processing, the AG346UCD excels. Though it runs at 175 Hz, it matches many 240 Hz OLED screens with extremely low input lag. When looking very closely, I could see a little motion blur in test patterns. But when gaming, there was no blur. Every detail, near or far, was rendered perfectly. Fast movements showed no breakup or stuttering. My aim was precise, and my movements were exact. Takeaway: The AG346UCD is positioned as a value choice, and it easily meets that goal. It delivers excellent gaming performance with low lag and smooth motion processing. It has beautifully saturated SDR color and is extremely useful for everyday tasks. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have the bright HDR highlights one expects. And there are HDR color anomalies which appear as undersaturation of the most vivid shades. Considering it’s a 34-inch ultra-wide OLED for $650 though, I can’t complain too loudly. Trump officials prepare plans to revive Title 42 policy to expel migrants, documents show Trump officials prepare plans to revive Title 42 policy to expel migrants, documents show Washington — The Trump administration has prepared plans to implement a policy that would allow U.S. immigration officials to swiftly expel migrants on the grounds that they could spread diseases like tuberculosis, according to internal government documents obtained by CBS News. The plans would revive a border measure known as Title 42 that the first Trump administration enacted at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to authorize summary expulsions of migrants. The Biden administration kept that policy in place amid record levels of ******** crossings at the U.S. southern border until letting it expire in 2023. The revival of Title 42 would also add another layer to an unprecedented web of border measures enacted by President Trump since taking office to close down the American asylum system. One of those actions has allowed U.S. border officials to quickly deport migrants from the U.S., without granting them an opportunity to request asylum, a right foreigners have under domestic and international refugee law. The authority underpinning that policy, called 212(f), permits presidents to ban the entry of foreigners whose arrival is deemed to be “detrimental” to the U.S. But the new measure would invoke the Public Health Service Act, found in Title 42 of the U.S. code, to empower officials to expel migrants without any of the processing outlined in federal immigration law, which says those on U.S. soil can request asylum even if they enter the country illegally. The internal documents obtained by CBS News indicate the CDC is planning to issue an order that would label unauthorized migrants trying to enter the U.S. as public health risks, citing concerns that they could spread communicable diseases like tuberculosis. Customs and Border Protection officials would be charged with enforcing the CDC’s order and directed to expeditiously expel migrants to Mexico, their home country or third nations willing to accept them, the documents show. Just like the 212(f) proclamation, the Title 42 order would allow border agents to ignore U.S. immigration law, denying migrants the right to seek asylum. It’s unclear when exactly the administration plans to invoke Title 42, but officials across agencies have been preparing for the policy change. Representatives for the CDC and the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees CBP, did not respond to requests for comment. The renewed invocation of Title 42 would likely be contested by public health experts. In 2020, the Trump administration pressured the CDC to invoke Title 42, despite opposition from subject matter experts at the agency who believed the move was not rooted in public health and was instead a way for officials to further President Trump’s immigration crackdown. While the stated rationale behind the invocation of Title 42 is to reduce overcrowding in immigration detention facilities and the potential spread of diseases, migrant crossings at the southern border have plunged since Mr. Trump’s inauguration. Officials have been recording an average of fewer than 300 ******** border crossings per day recently, a more than 90% drop from February 2024, Border Patrol chief Mike Banks told CBS News in an interview on Thursday. The Trump administration’s plan will also almost certainly trigger legal challenges. Federal judges found that the COVID-era Title 42 order could not override U.S. asylum law or legal protections Congress created for unaccompanied children, whom the Trump administration expelled under the measure. How the Title 42 order would interact with Mr. Trump’s other border policies, including the 212(f) proclamation, is unclear. But the 212(f) order is at risk of being halted by the courts due a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. “It’s clear that they’re just sort of pulling out all the stops, and the goal is literally stopping people from entering the United States, not processing anybody under the immigration law,” said Theresa Cardinal Brown, a former U.S. immigration official during the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. More Camilo Montoya-Galvez Camilo Montoya-Galvez is the immigration reporter at CBS News. Based in Washington, he covers immigration policy and politics. Thaier Al-sudani | Reuters Tens of thousands of people gathered on the outskirts of Beirut on Sunday to pay their respects to Hezbollah’s slain leader Hassan Nasrallah, nearly five months after he was killed in an Israeli airstrike in a stunning blow to the Iran-backed group. The killing of Nasrallah, who led the Shi’ite ******* group through decades of conflict with Israel and oversaw its transformation into a military force with regional sway, was one of the opening salvos in an Israeli escalation that badly weakened Hezbollah. Carrying pictures of Nasrallah and Hezbollah flags, supporters gathered early on Sunday for a mass ******** for Nasrallah and other slain leaders of the group at a stadium in the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut. The 55,000-seat Camille Chamoun Sports City stadium was nearly full hours before the ceremony was set to start. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, an Iraqi delegation including Shi’ite politicians and militia commanders, and a delegation from Yemen’s Houthis were expected to attend. The mass ******** is aimed at showing strength after Hezbollah emerged battered from last year’s war with Israel, which killed most of its leadership and thousands of fighters and wreaked destruction on south Lebanon. The impact on Hezbollah was compounded by the ousting of its ally Bashar al-Assad in Syria, severing a key supply route. “We may have lost a great deal as a man, but we have not lost the value of the resistance because the resistance is clinging on,” said Hassan Nasreddine, a Lebanese man headed to the ceremony from the south. The ******** was also being held for Hashem Safieddine, who led Hezbollah for a week after Nasrallah’s death. He was killed in an Israeli strike before he had been publicly announced as Nasrallah’s successor. After his death, Nasrallah was buried temporarily next to his son, Hadi, who died fighting for Hezbollah in 1997. His official ******** was delayed to allow time for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from south Lebanon under the terms of a U.S.-backed ceasefire which ended last year’s war. Though Israel has largely withdrawn from the south, its troops continue to hold five hilltop positions in the area, and Israel carried out airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Sunday, saying it had identified Hezbollah activity. Matt Dawson column: ‘England want to entertain but winning is all-important’ Matt Dawson column: ‘England want to entertain but winning is all-important’ In his BBC Sport column, World Cup winner Matt Dawson reflects on England’s narrow win over Scotland, and assesses how the battle for British and Irish Lions selection at fly-half is shaping up. I’m always in the camp of winning over entertainment. Of course England want to entertain the fans, but when you’re in that white shirt, you just want to win the game. As a player, I never thought ‘how can I do this to entertain the fans?’ If these two wins over France and Scotland are the start of a 10-game unbeaten run, England can be the ugliest team in the world and the roof will still come off Allianz Stadium. The fans love coming to Twickenham, knowing no-one beats you or messes you around. If you went outside the bars and pubs around the ground after the victory over Scotland, they were absolutely rammed two hours after the game. England have found a little edge over the past couple of games where they have gone behind and it is invaluable experience for these players to bounce back and grind out the win. It will stand them in good stead. They have a solid set-piece, which is going to handle most teams. The line-out looks solid with Ollie Chessum coming in, and at the breakdown they are getting the balance of the back row. For me, the glaring the omission is kicking the ball when it was the wrong option. When there is a five-on-three in attack, let’s isolate that final defender and walk in for the try. I don’t mind kicking when it’s really static. It’s difficult to break down Test defences when you don’t have momentum in the game. But it seems like England are recognising scenarios from training where ‘this is what we are going to do’, regardless of the opposition. I started to feel England were getting away from that in the autumn and previously in last year’s Six Nations where they have been ‘full metal jacket’ ready to attack. The first line break came towards the end of the first half when they had a bit of territory and possession. Marcus Smith went through the middle, but the top teams finish those opportunities off and they are the bits that will frustrate them. England have really talented, skilful individuals and I would like to see them take a bit more calculated risk. I love their openness and honesty after the game. They knew they hadn’t played at their capabilities but they really did dig in, particularly around defence. It was incredibly sound and dominant and it gave them a chance. They have needed a bounce of the ball in the past couple of games, which didn’t go their way in the autumn, but they are showing the same fight and commitment and getting their reward.
